Social and Cultural Anthropology

This thesis analyses the social relationships of a group of northern Hai || om, who also call themselves =j=Akhoe, in the Oshikoto region of Namibia. The Hai ||om are a Khoisan-speaking group, labelled "Bushmen" or "San" by outsiders, who were dispossessed of their land during the colonial period. Today most Hai || om combine hunting, gathering, agriculture, handicrafts, wage labour, and cattle-keeping in a mixed economy. The Hai || om changing economy has elements of an immediate-retum strategy aimed at gaining access to the delayed-retum economies of neighbouring groups, particularly Owambo-speaking agropastoralists, and farmers of European origin. Based on long-term participant observation with the Hai || om, this thesis shows the flexibility and versatility of Hai || om social organization and its institutions. Particular reference is made to the ways in which social categories are established on the basis of material transactions (sharing, giftgiving, bartering and commercial exchange), and are grounded in shared classifications of land and its resources. The thesis documents and analyses how Hai || om construct and maintain social relations, including relations with outsiders, in everyday social interaction. Patterns of Hai || om social practice involving these social relations emerge in language pragmatics, in the usage of space, and in ritual activities. The thesis also includes an analysis of representations of ethnic identity and economic difference in Hai||om folklore. The investigation shows that Hai || om social relationships and social values continue to shape the diversity and overall flexibility that characterize Hai || om life today. Although Hai || om have little power to influence the conditions imposed on them by national and international contexts, Hai || om social strategies across changing conditions can be explained on the basis of a set of instituted social practices centred around open accessibility and informal common ground. The material presented in this thesis was collected during a total of twentythree months of field research in the years 1990-1994 with the Hai||om in Namibia. The core area of my research was the Oshikoto region (formally part of the Tsumeb district and Owamboland) in the central north of Namibia where Hai || om also refer to themselves as 4=Akhoe.

Nestes tempos aziagos, quando os imperialismos voltam a atuar com total desenvoltura e descaramento (Estados Unidos sobre a Groenlândia e o Panamá; Rússia sobre a Ucrânia; Israel sobre a Palestina, o Líbano e a Síria; Marrocos sobre o Saara etc., etc.), falar de geocultura é um ato de pacificação, para afastar intencionalmente a atenção da desmesura do diktat geopolítico. O termo geocultura foi empregado por Immanuel Wallerstein para designar o que significava o Sul dos Estados Unidos, um espaço imaginário impossível de definir, mas, ao mesmo tempo, recorrente como ideia atraente ou repudiável entre os americanos do Norte 1. A geocultura não é um projeto devedor da geopolítica ou da geoestratégia, consiste em pensar a cartografia imaginária como áreas de irradiação linguístico-cultural, sem pretensão alguma de erguer novas fronteiras, mas destacando as similitudes acima das diferenças para lograr cumplicidades em áreas de influência discursiva. Nem sequer se trata de um imperialismo cultural, mas de uma interzona (termo tomado de empréstimo da contracultura), onde manter ativo o diálogo sobre fundamentos de diversidade e pluralidade. Trata-se de uma cartografia cultural, na qual, como queriam Gilles Deleuze e Felix Guattari, sejam traçadas novas "dobras", mais complicadas e mais interessantes, portanto, diante do pretendido cartesianismo dominante do capitalismo 2 .

United States\u27 policy makers have been challenged creating understandable nutrition labels and effective healthy food campaigns for consumers of mixed heritage. Previous studies explored the sociocultural factors that influence Hispanics\u27 abilities to navigate consumer food education programs, but little was known about how Mexican culture impacts those programs. The purpose of this study was to better understand those factors. Research questions focused on the experiences of residents of a west Texas town regarding their food decision-making process about food choices and their understanding of food education information. The purpose of this phenomenological research was to explore how Mexican culture effected navigation through these programs. I used the theory of dietary acculturation, environmental theory, and advocacy coalition framework as the lenses to view this phenomenon. The development of time and social changes have an influence on the social activities of the community. Lifestyle, views, communication, and so on bring new problems in life. This will have an impact on a person's mental health condition. For a Muslim, religion has a big role in overcoming problems in his life. This study aims to explain how the implementation and influence of Islam on the mental health of a Muslim. Purposive sampling technique is the method used in this study. The results of the study show that Islam and mental health have a good correlation in overcoming one's emotional problems. Because, what is contained in the teachings of Islam contained in the Al-Quran and As-Sunnah is in accordance with human nature.

This study presents the results of an Aanaar Saami pilot project in the Saami Culture Archive, University of Oulu. The project has established a set of conventions to transcribe and annotate Aanaar Saami recordings in the archive's collection and created a mechanism through which grammatically annotated but anonymous versions can be imported to the Korp search interface in the Language Bank of Finland. The practices include wide use of Saami language technology, the use of Finnish computational research infrastructure, and they can be extended later to other Saami languages in the archive.

Global perspective on the archaeology of the African Diaspora will be the main theme of this symposium. Papers will discuss results of ongoing research, analysis, and interpretation of archaeological, bioanthropological and other evidence from the African Diaspora. The Howard University based African Burial Ground Project in New York City, a project that utilises an interdisciplinary and explicitly diasporic and comparative perspective, will serve as the hub and model for the symposium.

Part of the Global Music Series, Music in Portugal and Spain: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture is written by two of the leading scholars in music from Spain and Portugal, two countries that have experienced similar and even at times joint historical trajectories. As ‘the first textbook that deals with the musics of Portugal and Spain comparatively’ (pxii), we are offered a more comprehensive musical and cultural overview than a textbook dealing with either of these geographical areas separately.

« L'ancienne façon de penser la mesure était concrète, comparative et relative, et non abstraite, normative ou absolue 1 . » L'historien de l'économie Harald Witthöft renvoie ainsi à deux approches distinctes de la mesure et, au-delà, à deux véritables cultures des pratiques métriques qui se sont succédé dans le temps : une ancienne, ancrée dans l'environnement matériel qui, avec sa multitude de poids et de mesures, s'adapte aux besoins quotidiens, au négoce des marchands et au pragmatisme des activités économiques à différentes échelles, et une moderne, détachée du monde sensible avec une conception abstraite et scientifique des poids et mesures, érigée en langage universel et gouvernée par des normes garantissant les échanges au niveau mondial. Quelle rupture ou transition dans le temps, de nature épistémologique et sociétale, est à l'origine de cette représentation d'un avant et d'un après ? Les historiens de la mesure considèrent, de façon plus ou moins explicite, qu'il s'agit du ou, plutôt, des moments de l'introduction du système fondé sur le mètre dans les sociétés occidentales 2 . L'historiographie oppose ainsi très souvent le manque de précision et la « trop » grande diversité, voire le « chaos » des systèmes dits « pré-métriques », de l'Antiquité jusqu'à l'Ancien Régime, avec la rigueur, l'uniformité et l'universalité du système fondé sur le mètre 3 . Les anthropologues pointent plutôt du doigt la révolution industrielle du monde occidental qui aurait modifié à la fois la fonction sociale et notre vision de la mesure. Τhe Prepalatial cemetery at Livari in south-eastern Crete (c. 2800–2000 BC) is located in a remote area without any major centres in the vicinity. Despite the geographic isolation, the funerary practices and the material culture suggest interaction with areas across the island. The type of the circular tholos tomb shows affinities with the Mesara and the Asterousia in south-central Crete whereas certain classes of material culture find close typological parallels in other parts of Crete and the Cyclades. Stylistic
similarities are not sufficient to identify the origin of the artefacts and substantiate connectivity between areas. Petrographic analysis of a broad array of pottery samples has demonstrated interesting connections between this remote community in the far east of Crete and the rest of the island. The
results allow us to reconsider issues of identity, regionalism, connectivity and movement of people, goods and ideas at the beginning of the Cretan Bronze Age.

В рамках изучения миниатюр Радзивиловской летописи (конец XV в.), выявлены и проанализированы сюжеты, связанные с символическими коммуникативными практиками в древнерусской династии Рюриковичей (ХІ–ХІІ вв.), в частности, коммуникация между князьями и рядовым населением, межкняжеские отношения внутри династии, различные формы репрезентации княжеской власти. На основе анализа миниатюр определены ярко выраженные визуальные формы трансляции образа древнерусского правителя. На изображениях представлены знаковые элементы княжеского одеяния, а также предметы, символически связанные с властью княжеского рода: «древнерусская княжеская шапка» и меч. Использование меча как инсигнии господства показано на ряде миниатюр, где данный предмет связан с обретением, обладанием или передачей власти древнерусских князей. В миниатюрах отразилось древнерусское понимание персонализации городского коллектива в образе одного человека, представленного на летописных изображениях. Так, подтверждается вывод о «коллективной личности» древнерусского города, которая могла выступать субъектом политических отношений наряду с князьями. Миниатюры достаточно подробно отражают информацию летописных источников об интронизационных ритуалах Рюриковичей, связанных с занятием княжеских столов в древнерусских городах. Разрешение конфликтов в кня-жеской династии часто иллюстрировалось княжескими пирами. Миниатюры являются ценными свидетельствами по княжескому погребальному обряду.

En 1913, Zacharie Le Rouzic publia une amulette gravée, accompagnée d'une brève description et d'une illustration. L'objet avait été trouvé en 1892 à proximité des trois dolmens de Mané Kerioned (Plouharnel, Carnac, Morbihan). Compte tenu des progrès réalisés depuis environ 25 ans dans l'identification et l'interprétation des gravures néolithiques dans le Morbihan, une nouvelle évaluation de ce petit objet est proposée ici, en tenant également compte des cupulettes qui s'y trouvent. La forme et
l´ensemble des gravures de la petite plaque en schiste, qui pourrait peut-être considérée comme une amulette, présentent des correspondances avec le corpus des gravures et des arrangements récurrents de cupules rencontrés en Bretagne entre la fin du Mésolithique et le Néolithique moyen. Le programme du planétarium "Stellarium" permet d'illustrer facilement l'éventail des résultats. Les conclusions présentées sont une évidence supplémentaire que les superstructures intellectuelles en général et les contextes cartographiques astronomiques en particulier ont peut-être été reléguées un peu trop precipité par certains représentants de l'archéologie préhistorique en Europe dans le domaine de l'inexplorable. Cela peut paraître étonnant au vu de l'importance culturelle incontestable des symboles astraux évidents, du proche Orient pré-métallique (entre autres aussi des constellations de cupulettes sur des sceaux cylindriques) jusqu'en Asie de l'Est.

Section 69 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) criminalizes sexual intercourse obtained through deceitful means, including false promises of marriage without intent to fulfill them, false promises of employment or promotion, and marriage after suppressing identity. However, this section poses significant contradictions to other provisions, including Section 68 of the BNS, and raises concerns regarding its constitutionality. Furthermore, it introduces an ambiguity-if a false promise leading to sexual intercourse is illegal, does that imply a true promise under similar circumstances is legal? This paper critically analyzes Section 69 in relation to other legal provisions and constitutional principles, highlighting its potential misuse, vagueness, and inconsistency with fundamental rights. Literature Review A significant issue raised in the literature concerns the definition of "deceitful means," which Section 69 uses to describe fraudulent conduct leading to sexual intercourse. While the section clearly mentions false promises of marriage, it also expands the scope to include other types of deceit, such as false claims about employment or promotion, as explained in the section's "Explanation" clause.

This paper is concerned with the ways in which a group of Persian women, who have all fled Iran in the last two decades, give meaning to place and memory through the everyday practices of cooking and embroidery. While there are many different localised arts of patterning and flavour, we focus here on the recurring pattern of bota (the Cypress tree). In particular, we examine how the bota motif links both the making of domestic sweets and cloths, and is central in recalling and remaking a sense of place. The Cypress tree symbolises life: the continuation of life in place, and the continuation of place in life. In creating and consuming the bota motif, through eating, laying tablecloths, wrapping towels, sitting on cushions and drawing curtains, embodied experiences of landscape and relationships are reproduced. The embroidery items entail and occasion sensual engagement in and of themselves, and also serve as backgrounds for specific sensual engagements, including, for example, as tablecloths upon which food will be served. Engagement with the bota pattern cannot be characterised along strictly divided sensual dimensions. Rather, we argue that the senses are intertwined in a synaesthetic knot in which memory is embodied and reproduced.

Questo lavoro propone un approccio complesso e interdisciplinare allo studio del territorio della Valle del Sarno, in linea con le indicazioni STEM del MIUR per la formazione dei giovani e la loro preparazione ai cambiamenti culturali. L'analisi si basa sull'esperienza lavorativa dell'autore come Chimico Tecnico in un contesto di Cultura Classica, certificata dal MIBACT. La Valle del Sarno si configura come un territorio culturale particolarmente adatto a un approccio STEM grazie alle sue peculiarità: crocevia di culture migratorie fin dalla preistoria (documentato dalla ricerca archeologica), dinamica attività economica che genera benessere, intensa religiosità espressa dalla Basilica Mariana di Pompei e un patrimonio culturale di inestimabile valore rappresentato dal Parco Archeologico di Pompei.

Psychoanalysis has produced an ensemble of institutions, expertise, procedures, and practices for rendering the psychoanalytic subject legible and, through this, psychic life as an actionable site of intervention, dislocation, and struggle. This article examines how diverse psychoanalytic communities in Buenos Aires have produced unique grammars that influence how individuals articulate ideas about health and well‐being. Descriptive, culturally specific, historically informed, and always provisional, this grammar is empirically grounded in lived experience. Through presenting several case studies, I flesh out how this grammar, as a deictic expression of/for the unconscious is deployed, reworked, and embodied in everyday interactions. I demonstrate how psychic life is enmeshed within social and political experience. El presente artículo pretende analizar los corrimientos de sentido de la categoría "villero" en los años 90. Es decir, como se construyó el sentido y contenido del término a partir de las miradas que tienen sobre ellos los medios de comunicación, distintos actores gubernamentales y los propios villeros. Se parte de una estrecha vinculación entre esta nueva identidad villera y los procesos sociales que se dieron a partir de la crisis estructural de principios de los años 80 y las acciones estatales en tanto propuestas urbanas para este sector en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), sometime referred to as female circumcision is one of the deeply rooted traditional and cultural practices which long existed in Liberia and the African continent. Various forms of the practice are still prevalent amongst a number of ethnic groups in Liberia. FGM is regarded as sensitive topic because of the high degree of secrecy surrounding its performance. In an attempt to study the practice of FGM in the Paynesville community, a standard questionnaire was administered to a sample size of 409 females in eight communities in Paynesville. The communities chosen were ELWA Community, Joe Bar, and 72nd, Jacob Town, Red Light/Gobachop, Pipeline, Soul Clinic, and Cocoa Cola Factory. Out of the 409 female interviewed, result of the study revealed that 43.03% (176) of the female interviewed practiced FGM. Ethnic groups that have the highest positive respondents included the Gbandi, Kpelle, Gio, Lorma, Vai, Mano, Bassa and Kissi. The Americo-Liberians, Kru, Sarpo and Grebo ethnic groups represented the highest negative respondents to the practice of FGM. A large proportion of the respondents was strongly against the practice of FGM for reasons ranging from painfulness of the act, difficulty during deliver, social, religious, physical and psychological trauma including fistula. Notwithstanding, some were supportive of the practice because of strong traditional influence and belief that it is part of their cultural heritage.

Among Tibetan Materialities makes an intervention into Tibetan studies by critically engaging with material culture. It opens up new sources, methodologies and frameworks for studying, thinking and writing about material culture, materials and materiality in Tibet and the Himalayas. It highlights novel ways that Tibetan and Himalayan worlds can be made relevant beyond their local contexts. Spanning historical and contemporary contexts this collection of ongoing research disrupts current approaches to Tibetan and Himalayan materiality by considering socially constructed materiality and the materials constituting things, from their conception and production to their end of life and afterlife.

Este artigo analisa os fundamentos filosóficos e antropológicos subjacentes à Teoria do Se-Movimentar com base na filosofia fenomenológica de Merleau-Ponty e na antropologia social de Mauss e Geertz. Considera também implicações para os currículos de Educação Física do Ensino Fundamental e Médio que tenham por mote a formação de sujeitos emancipados, autônomos e críticos, tomando como exemplo o Currículo de Educação Física do Estado de São Paulo. Conclui que o currículo precisa imbricar-se com a vida social dos alunos e levar em conta desafios e temas da sociedade contemporânea.

El presente capítulo es producto de una revisión bibliográfica, cuyo objetivo consistió en mostrar evidencia de los indicios de internacionalización del tejido Wayuú como forma de expresión de la tradición ancestral comercializada a través de productos artesanales en mercados extranjeros. Se aplicó el método de análisis, con un enfoque cualitativo, diseño no experimental, bajo un nivel documental-bibliográfico transversal. Tras la revisión documental se encontró que el tejido Wayuú es una forma transmisión de saberes ancestrales por sus líneas, formas y colores, por lo que han captado la atención de diseñadores que han internacionalizado sus tejidos como una nueva identidad cosmopolita. Se concluye que los pueblos indígenas requieren la defensa de sus derechos fundamentales como el territorio y la preservación de sus valores culturales pese a la comercialización e hibridación cultural a los que se ven expuestos por la mercantilización de sus productos artesanales como los tejidos.

Chinatowns, often considered exotic touristic centers, sites of otherness or global incursions, actually highlight both global social movements and complex urban meanings. The mass migration of millions of Chinese across the world since the mid-19th century has fostered distinctive global heterotopias and transnational populations simultaneously localized in myriad host cities and nations. Hence the meanings of individual Chinatowns, including their roles in urban conflict, must be read ethnographically and comparatively through the wider set of Chinese enclaves worldwide. This essay, building on Saussure, Foucault, Lefebvre, and Turner as well as collaborative fieldwork, argues that Chinatowns constitute key symbols of urban problematic of culture, class and morality legible through paradigmatic and syntagmatic readings in a global dialectic.

Sipekiová, sa zameriava na identifikáciu citovaných literárnych zdrojov z Vedomostí Trenčianskej, Oravskej, Liptovskej, Turčianskej, Zvolenskej, Tekovskej a Nitrianskej stolice. T. Součková v druhej kapitole skúma kontakty M. Bela s ruskými akademikmi v prvej polovici 18. storočia, vrátane presahov a reflexie tejto spolupráce do historiografickej spisby. Tretia kapitola od P. Chrastinu je rozčlenená do dvoch podkapitol. Ich obsahom je analýza a interpretácia Belovej charakteristiky obyčajných podzemných a studených minerálnych vôd na historickom území Nitrianskej stolice, resp. projekt rekonštrukcie úseku cisársko-kráľovskej poštovej cesty medzi Trakovicami a Leopoldovom (leopoldovským mýtom) od S. Mikovíniho. V štvrtej kapitole P. Krajčovič spracoval podľa Belových Vedomostí otázku habánskeho osídlenia na území Bratislavskej a Nitrianskej stolice. Piata kapitola od S. Bönde Gogovej a D. Bešinu odráža aplikačný rozmer témy v kontexte kultúrnej trasy Terra Beliana – Krajina Mateja Bela s informačnými tabuľami v teréne in situ s digitálnym obsahom. /The edited book Terra Beliana: works, texts and contexts brings together selected themes of the subject. Its core consists of five thematic blocks (chapters). The first chapter, authored by E. Juríková and N. Sipekiová, focuses on the identification of cited literary sources from the Matthias Bel's  Notitia of Trenčín, Orava, Liptov, Turiec, Zvolen, Tekov and Nitra County.  T. Součková, in the second chapter, examines Bel's contacts with Russian academics in the first half of the 18th century, including the overlap and reflection of this cooperation in historiographical writings. The third chapter by P. Chrastina is divided into two subchapters. Their content is the analysis and interpretation of Bel's characterization of common underground and cold mineral waters in the historical territory of the Nitra County, resp. the project of the reconstruction of the section of the imperial-royal postal road between Trakovice and Leopoldov by S. Mikovini. In the fourth chapter, P. Krajčovič elaborated the question of the Haban (anabaptist) settlement in the territory of the Bratislava and Nitra County according to Bel's Notitia. The fifth chapter by S. Bönde Gogová and D. Bešina reflects the application dimension of the topic in the context of the cultural route Terra Beliana - Land of Matthias Bel with in situ information boards in the field with digital content.

Este artículo analiza la producción de la diversidad biocultural entre los ayuujk de la Sierra Mixe, a partir del examen de interacciones que tienen lugar entre una dimensión natural y una sociocultural. Se examinan dos categorías espaciales locales —yukjotp (monte) y kämjotp (milpa)— para entender cómo se generan relaciones simbióticas entre humanos, no humanos y el entorno. A partir de dichas categorías, el artículo explora prácticas agrícolas, alimentarias y rituales junto a la figura de los xëmaapyët (especialistas calendáricos), cuyas prácticas articulan relaciones entre el espacio, el tiempo y la biodiversidad.
El texto revela que la visión ayuujk concibe el territorio no como un entorno estático, sino como una red dinámica de comunidades humanas y extrahumanas, donde las prácticas culturales se transforman en la relación socializada con la naturaleza y sus agentes. Se resalta la integración de sistemas de conocimiento tradicional y su relevancia para repensar las relaciones humanas con la naturaleza en contextos contemporáneos. Esta perspectiva, centrada en la multiplicidad y la transformación, aporta una lectura crítica de la diversidad biocultural y sugiere nuevas formas de abordar las interacciones socioambientales, más allá de las dicotomías convencionales entre cultura y naturaleza.

This is not an abstract, but rather an attempt to contextualize the book production as a problematic of modern academia. This is not the entire book either—just the first few pages, like what happens in any book as a manufactured industry product.

I did a doctoral degree like most academics do, back in 2007, from Hiroshima University. Why a doctorate and why Hiroshima is altogether a different question and may bore you easily. To provide a perspective, although most academics need a doctorate to get hired, not in Bangladesh till now. So, Bangladeshi academics pursue a doctorate to get promoted, or to finish the global ritual, whatever. In my case, I was senior enough to not much benefit from a degree. Still, I did it, perhaps for a change (or to perform the ritual). Hiroshima was a consequential choice after many eventful things.

Why did a 2007 thesis take 18 years to get published as a book? This question is related to my ever-growing interest (or often lack of it as an author) in the publishing industry. This is a sweet irony that this book is kind of a byproduct of my almost-formal research on the global academic publishing nexus.

After a few attempts with a few publishers, Vernon decided to publish it. These pages recently were uploaded to their website. It should mean, I can circulate it without any 'legal' obligation and the book is in the printing.

What do the welcome and the refusal mean when the one who arrives is not human? By examining the moral attitude created through the acceptance of European racing pigeons in Pakistan and the capture of Pakistani “spy pigeons” at the India‐Pakistan border, this article unknots multiple meanings of arrival and explores how shared values of hospitality and hostility emerge and interplay when a more‐than‐human Other arrives in a foreign land as an invited guest or an uninvited intruder. Drawing on Jacques Derrida's (2000) construction of hostpitality and Punjabi Sufi poet‐philosopher Waris Shah's discussion of badal (reciprocity), this article contends that in South Asia, reciprocal exchanges produce and sustain cooperative, competitive, or antagonistic bonds and propound an analytical avenue to critically rethink deconstruction of the home as a sovereign space.
