The purpose of this phenomenological study was to critically analyze the experiences and practices of Inland Empire urban school principals as they work to close the African American achievement gap. The achievement gap begins in elementary school and continues to persist throughout elementary and secondary schools producing differences in high school graduation rates, college and career attainment, and ultimately socio-economic differences in income between various racial and ethnic groups. We know the impact of school principals on student achievement is significant. The literature demonstrates that school principals play a key role in developing the structures and systems necessary to improve the outcomes for urban schools and more specifically African American students. Ten school principals from a large urban Inland Empire school district participated in the study and served to provide their lived experiences while leading diverse schools. Findings indicated three emergent themes: (1) relationship builders, (2) caring environments, and (3) courageous leadership were influential in principals establishing and maintaining a school that was sensitive to the needs of African American students. Another major finding from the study demonstrated the impact that race still plays within the public school setting. Several of the study participants expressed their struggles with providing overt support of African American students.

The potential of biohumanities as a foundation for antiracist critique of the human

The Racial Cage delivers a spirited and polyvocal analysis of how race is materialized through both metaphorical and literal cages. It theorizes the cage, fence, dragnet, and tube as material–semiotic sites for racialization and for iteratively redefining the human–animal boundary. A collaborative conversation across continents, this work examines the racial cage as an important part of the practice of social division and bodily containment. The deeply considered result is an empirical and theoretical approach to biohumanities that productively interrogates its linkages to critical theories of race and racism.

Confidence and related constructs such as self-efficacy have been previously identified as important to college student persistence and performance (e.g., Cox, 2009; Wood & Turner, 2011), but existing research gives little indication of how confidence is shaped by students’ day-to-day interactions in class and on campus. Using data from nearly 100 interviews of community college students attending three colleges, this paper examines students’ descriptions of their confidence upon entering college and the shifts in confidence they experienced in their first few semesters. Findings reveal that student confidence is continually shifting as a result of interactions with peers, faculty, and others. The analysis demonstrates how academic confidence can impact student motivation, commitment to academic pursuits, and behaviors associated with success. No, the original barter theory of the origins of money ("the barter story" for short) has not been rejected. What has been rejected is a narrowly specific, and apparently parentless, version of the barter story based on the standard neoclassical synthesis modelling assumptions of homo oeconomicus and fully-fledged market economies. As in all other myths, the myth of the rejection of the barter story contains a grain of truth, namely, that the actually lived human communities are much more complex and nuanced than assumed by the standard neoclassical synthesis economics rendition of the story. These grains of truth, as valuable and helpful as they can be for the improvement of economics, cannot change the conclusion that the original barter story remains standing.

In this chapter, I explicate the concept of absolute critique in the second
chapter of Tanabe Hajime’s Philosophy as Metanoetics, “Absolute Critique:
The Logic of Metanoetics.” Because Tanabe conceives of his Philosophy
as Metanoetics as a further development of the spirit of Immanuel Kant’s
Critique of Pure Reason, Philosophy as Metanoetics is a post-Kantian
philosophy whose central tenants can be well motivated through a close
analysis of his relationship to Kant’s philosophy.

The emergence of distinct research on flight and forced migration occurred as a differentiation of a research area within the interdisciplinary and application-oriented field of migration research. A characteristic of migration research was and is the objective of influencing politics and the public and, in connection with this, a close connection to questions, premises and information needs of political institutions and actors. In the case of research on flight and forced migration, this is also associated with a high moral impetus in the sense of the expectation of helping to solve the serious humanitarian problems that become visible in the context of flight. This implies a tendency to narrow the focus of the research perspective to issues for which political relevance is assumed. In contrast, this paper develops reflections on the problems and perspectives of research that is not limited to the processing of political problem definitions and the response options preferred by them. The argumentation clarifies problems and perspectives of a research that is selfreflexive and oriented towards distinguishing normative convictions from scientific assertions. Against this background, it is argued that refugee research is confronted with questions that cannot be dealt with sufficiently in the context of a differentiated field of research and therefore a stronger connection to theories of society is proposed.

This article examines Hannah Arendt’s attitude towards Holocaust survivors’ testimonies, as reflected in her first book The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951). Although Arendt based her analysis of life in the Nazi concentration camps and her theory on “total domination” in large part on Holocaust survivors’ testimonies, her attitude towards first hand accounts was ambivalent and even skeptic. According to Arendt, survivors of the concentration camps are not capable of reflecting on their experience in any meaningful way. Their experiences in and of themselves cannot teach us about the camps because they lack positive content and therefore, they are not unique. In her view, firsthand accounts are inherently unintelligible, since they try to communicate something which remains unimaginable and incredible. Only those who are “free from the bestial, desperate terror … can afford to keep thinking about horrors,” she wrote.
The doubts that Arendt expressedd in The Origins of Totalitarianism regarding the value of eyewitness accounts in explaining the events of the camps are not exceptional in the general attitude of historians, who usually treated them with great mistrust. Such doubts, I argue in this article, should be reflected upon not only in the context of the general perception at the end of the 1940s, beginning of the 1950s, which could not cope with survivors’ testimonies, but mainly in light of Arendt’s broader theoretical stances regarding political judgment and other social mores that focus on suffering, pity and compassion, as reflected in her later writings.

Eurocentric intellectual dominance within the academic study of Islam marginalizes Islamic epistemologies, perpetuating an intellectual hierarchy that undermines Islamic traditions and their attendant educational systems. Such imbalance, both in the West and in Muslim communities, discourages critical heuristic engagement with the rich intellectual heritage of Islam. This is a missed opportunity, as Islamic intellectual traditions, particularly in metaphysics and theology, can be employed to offer vital perspectives for teaching in higher education. Rather than critiquing Islam from a Euro-American perspective, the methodological expertise of Orientalism can be employed to explore the potential of Islamic traditions to provide alternative perspectives regarding contemporary exigencies. Engaging with these traditions provides the foundation for a holistic vision for higher education, teaching and criticality in ways that integrate epistemology, ontology, and ethics. This approach can provide important perspectives for remedying dehumanizing trends in modern higher education, reorienting intellectual efforts toward ethical, holistic engagement.

Theodor W. Adorno was one of the twentieth century's most potent and influential European thinkers, whose impact is felt across the humanities and social sciences. However, Adorno's thought has been almost entirely absent from the business ethics conversation. This chapter explores the relevance of Adorno's thought for business ethics that has emerged in recent scholarship. It does so through an engagement with topics such as positivistic management, consumer culture, social media and political discourse, and the possibility of good work, and by expounding Adorno's critical theory, the critique of the business ethics tradition implied by his work, and the debate regarding whether Adorno can be read as a 'negative Aristotelian'.

From 1972 to 1977 the German painter Marianne Wex undertook an extensive research project aimed at demonstrating the cultural nature of gendered physical postures, published in book form as Let’s Take Back Our Space: “Female” and “Male” Body Language as a Result of Patriarchal Structures, in 1979. Emerging from Wex’s experience with feminist consciousness-raising and collective self-education, the dialectical account of her own political and personal awakening deploys the language of kinesic analysis alongside ethnographic self-study. The dialogue of Let’s Take Back Our Space with pop behavioral psychology and cybernetics is integral to Wex’s systems thinking, while her self-implication as articulated in both text and images represents a radical, even defiant, divergence from those referents in a project of what queer and trans* theorists have come to call “autotheory.”

This chapter discusses and analyzes the phenomenon of pathological
bifurcation among French engineering students. Pathological bifurcation occurs when sustainable development succeeds in inspiring student activism, but that passion expresses itself destructively. The chapter answers two questions. First, we interrogate whether pathological bifurcation is a product of lacunae with current SD education practices. Having answered af!rmatively, we reflect on how to treat this diagnosis. Our suggestion is that if SDG related curricular innovations are desirable, so too is an extensive grounding in the traditional teachings of what we call planetary humanities. These are lessons drawn from around planet inculcating the very traditional moral art of controlling one’s passions in such a way as to best foster collective flourishing.

Brazil is the largest and most influential country in South America with a population of about 211 million. The reality is a country with a wide gap between rich and poor. Many of its issues of (in)equity are related to a complex mix of factors, such as its large population, ethnic and cultural diversity, class and income disparity, late slavery abolishment, unstable democracy and political governance. At a national level, the former Brazilian government attempted to address the challenges outlined above by passing new legislation in 2007 that expanded the services and scope of the federal universities, particularly in respect to increasing access to tertiary education and providing increased support and infrastructure for people of middle-and low-income families. In this paper we analyse a PETE programme offered at one university in the Brazilian Northeast in response to changes introduced as a result of the 2007 legislation. Drawing on the perspectives of graduates from this programme, we examine how they see the complexity of social justice and equity issues from their experience in the course. Data were generated through focus group and individual interviews with former students. We supplemented this with document analysis of key policy and curriculum artifacts produced by the programme, and consultation with professors from the course to better understand the former students' experiential dynamics. Each participant expressed a strong affinity for and orientation towards social justice as an integral aspect of school physical education. The curricular restructuring enables students to engage with a broad range of content underpinned by ethical, political, aesthetic, epistemological, pedagogical and theoreticalmethodological principles. We consider that this curricular orientation seeks to meet the regional and local needs so that future physical education teachers, in turn, intervene with a more critical socio-cultural perspective in their teaching.

The Arab Spring in Egypt which started at the end of 2011 and led to the fall of the regime of Hosni Mubarak heralded new changes in this country`s domestic and foreign politics. By coming to power of Mohammad Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood who supported the cause of the Palestinian people and was therefore in drastic opposition to the Israeli occupation of Palestine, it was expected that the Egyptian-Israeli relations would be deteriorated if not interrupted. This expectation, however, was not fulfilled. Thus a major question comes to mind as why the relationship, particularly the security arrangements, with Israel of post-Mubarak Egypt under the new Muslim Brotherhood government was not deteriorated or even interrupted? This article seeks to answer this question using a political economy theoretical approach especially the Neo-Gramscian theory. Our main argument is that the Egyptian integration into the global neo-liberal economic order, particularly its dependence on the financial support from International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the United State Treasury, were the main factors shaping the continuity of the Egyptian policy towards Israel.

Chiar și atunci când vorbim despre Isus Cristos, manifestarea supremă a Logosului, vedem că El a venit ca un om real, într-un context istoric precis, folosind un limbaj uman și adresându-Se într-un mod în care oamenii Îl puteau înțelege.

Această realitate ne conduce la o concluzie esențială: revelația lui Dumnezeu, deși este transcendentă, este comunicată într-un mod pe care omul îl poate recepționa și interpreta corect. Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu nu rămâne izolat într-o dimensiune mistică inaccesibilă, ci devine parte integrantă a realității umane. Faptul că Logosul poate fi exprimat verbal și propozițional înseamnă că adevărul divin nu este subiectiv sau ambiguu, ci are o formă clară, care poate fi studiată, înțeleasă și aplicată. Acest lucru ne arată de ce Scriptura joacă un rol fundamental în viața credincioșilor: ea nu este doar o colecție de scrieri sfinte, ci este expresia consemnată a Logosului lui Dumnezeu, prin care El continuă să Se descopere oamenilor.

Esta teoría proporciona una evaluación crítica de las formaciones societales tardomodernas a la luz de la idea de "resonancia", entendida como el criterio normativo de la "vida buena". En términos generales, la resonancia es definida por Rosa como un modo de "relación con el mundo" pasible de ser descrito fenomenológicamente. Se trata, más precisamente, de una manera particular de existencia en la cual el mundo aparece para el sujeto -total o parcialmentecomo un "tú responsivo" (Rosa 2012, 12). La contracara de la resonancia sería la "alienación", una modalidad malograda o patológica de vínculo con el mundo en la que este se contrapone al sujeto como algo "mudo, frío e indiferente -o incluso hostil-" (Rosa 2012, 8). El objetivo de este texto es brindar una visión de conjunto de la concepción de la resonancia como parámetro normativo de la "vida buena". Para ello procederé en tres pasos. En primer lugar (1), daré cuenta de la centralidad que adquiere la pregunta ética por la "vida buena" en la teoría crítica contemporánea. En segundo término (2), reconstruiré sistemáticamente los lineamientos generales del concepto de resonancia en la obra de Rosa. Finalmente (3), haciéndole honor al objetivo del presente libro, emprenderé una breve reflexión acerca de los puntos de contacto entre la Teoría de la Resonancia y los discursos latinoamericanos sobre el Buen Vivir. This article addresses scholarly reflexivity in family research, by studying the use of paradigm from the second half of the twentieth century. In doing so, the present study focuses on countries that have produced remarkably abundant scholarly literatures on family issues, with a special focus on the United States, and with a limited focus on Japan for comparison from a non-Western context. By reviewing several types of family studies, this article throws light upon both the various manifestations of scholarly (self-)reflexivity and the diverse characteristics of the way paradigms are referred to in family science, as well as the connection between them. In doing so, the employment of paradigms is discussed through aspects such as the subject, the addressed field and its covered scale, as well as certain substantive attributes of the employed paradigm. In contrast, reflexivity in this study is referred to as reflexivity upon knowledge production, which is either related to the characteristics of a specific academic community or referred to a concrete research subject. By employing this conceptual tool, the present study, without claiming to be exhaustive, suggests that theoretical studies (especially from a philosophical approach), as well as emancipatory studies with a strong normative approach reveal high scholarly (self-)reflexivity, where the focus is either on the academic community, or on the applied research methodology and underlying assumptions, rather than on a specific family practice or process.

Elizabeth Bishop, Gonçalves Dias e Fernando Pessoa: uma estadunidense, um brasileiro e um português; três poetas em três diferentes contextos, mas que têm algo em comum: marcaram a história da literatura nos séculos XIX e XX. Este capítulo, ao seguir uma metodologia de abordagem qualitativa e de caráter descritivo-interpretativa, objetiva refletir sobre a poética desses autores, com base em três recortes específicos. Num primeiro momento, discorreu-se sobre o poema A Arte de Perder e a necessidade de compreender a perda como algo natural na vida humana. Em seguida, associou-se da Canção do Exílio com XX ? O Tejo é mais belo que o rio que corre pela minha aldeia acompanhada e comparou-se a maneira como tais poetas registram sua terra. Por fim, divagou-se sobre a existência do ser e sua representação no poema Para ser grande, sê inteiro.

Sc.) en travail social Février 2016 © Stéphanie Tourillon-Gingras, 2016 i RÉSUMÉ Ce mémoire porte sur les enfants en domesticité en Haïti, plus précisément sur les organisations qui leur viennent en aide. Il cherche à comprendre les obstacles auxquels elles sont confrontées, en plus de prendre connaissance des initiatives qu'elles mènent dans la lutte contre la domesticité infantile. Cette recherche fut menée en Haïti, auprès de dix acteurs sociaux oeuvrant au sein d'organisations -pour la plupart locales -venant en aide aux enfants en domesticité et leur famille. Les résultats de cette recherche montrent que les obstacles rencontrés par ces organisations sont attribuables aux différentes perceptions de la domesticité infantile en Haïti, à l'État haïtien ainsi qu'à la présence de l'aide internationale au pays. Cette recherche démontre que les solutions envisagées par les organisations pour lutter contre la domesticité infantile se situent à la fois en amont du phénomène (dans les communautés reculées) qu'en aval (auprès des enfants en domesticité et leur famille d'accueil). Les obstacles et les solutions présentés dans ce mémoire sont analysés selon le cadre théorique critique; les conditions de vie des familles d'enfants en domesticité en Haïti étant intrinsèquement liées aux contextes sociohistorique, politique et économique du pays. La conclusion de ce mémoire porte sur la pertinence de l'approche d'organisation communautaire, favorisée par certaines organisations locales en Haïti, pour lutter contre les mécanismes d'oppression subis par les familles d'enfants en domesticité en Haïti.

Sezon boyunca da oynamaya devam edecek olan çağdaş komedya, çağdaş dünya yapılarının bir sarmal gibi sürmekte olan ilişkilerini Aristofanes’e, Eugene Ionesco’ya, Samuel Beckett’e şapka çıkarırcasına gözler önüne seriyor ve bunu yaparken seyir yerindekileri oturdukları yere mıhlıyor. İnsanlar, tanrılar, “liminal”[1]olanlar ve sesli komutlar… Oyunun her anını yönlendiren komutlar, yalnızca sahnede ilerleyen bir düzenin değil, aynı zamanda tanrıların, insanların, doğanın, yapıların ve liminal olanların döngü içindeki konumlarının nelere tekabül ettiğine dair güçlü bir okuma sunuyor. Komutların siyasal, toplumsal, ekonomik, kültürel ilişkiler düzeninin kendisi olarak okunması, seyircinin tanrılarla, özellikle Zeus ile kurduğu ilişkiyi yeniden tanımlarken,  düzenin eleştirisine odaklanmasını sağlayan bir etken olarak düşünülebilir. Bir taraftan da “yönetmenin eli” olarak üçüncü karakter olan komutların seyirci için konumlandığı yer, bu alanda oyunun tüm anlamını değiştirebilecek bir potansiyele sahip.

Dans son livre Le droit et son autre, Augustin Simard explore la logique de
la théorie critique du juriste et politologue allemand Otto Kirchheimer (1905- 1965) en se concentrant sur la question de la primauté du droit. Kirchheimer, qui fut doctorant de Carl Schmitt et collaborateur de l’Institut de recherche sociale (IfS), est surtout connu pour ses analyses des relations entre la politique et le droit: de ses travaux de l’entre-deux-guerres sur la juridicisation de la politique à son magnum opus de l’après-guerre, Political Justice (1961). Le livre de Simard suit chronologiquement la pensée de Kirchheimer, ainsi que le débat théorique (juridique et politique) de chaque époque : du Weimar de l’entre-deux-guerres (les deux premiers chapitres) à la prévalence du nazisme (chapitres trois et quatre), pour conclure avec la structure sociopolitique de l’après-guerre (le dernier chapitre). Dans ma lecture, j’essaierai de mettre en évidence les contributions de Simard à l’étude de l’œuvre de Kirchheimer,
que j’estime importantes, en suivant la structure du livre.

In this article, we analyse key policy documents on teacher quality produced by the OECD and the EU during the period 2005 to 2017 using an educational connoisseurship and criticism approach. The purpose of this article is to explore how Eisner’s concepts of educational connoisseurship and educational criticism can be understood and used to analyse educational policy, especially how teacher quality is discursively constructed in transnational authoritative texts on education policy. Eisner’s three aspects of criticism, description, interpretation and evaluation can be utilised in a differentiated critical approach to the analysis of transnational policy documents on education. In this interview with Michael Lazarus, Jay Bernstein reflects on the history of his intellectual friendship with Gillian Rose-until her early death, his dearest friend. It was a friendship rooted in a shared passion for Hegel's philosophy as the ground origin and abiding source of Marxist Critical Theory. In the course of the interview, Bernstein comments on the role of speculative propositions in Rose's reading of Hegel; her modernist understanding of the meaning of style even after her critique of Adorno on style; on her obsession with critiquing post-structuralism; her continuing allegiance to Marxism; his understanding of her turn to political theology; the significance of Marx's "On the Jewish Question" for her and him; the meaning of law in Rose's thought as well as in his; the power and courage of her last book, Love's Work, its work of affirmation. He concludes with a reflection on his sense that she is a thinker whose fate is to be loved, studied, forgotten, and then discovered anew.

In August 2024, the new Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, announced a review, in her words a “Rapid Analytical Sprint,” of Government policy on extremism. She said it would “map and monitor extremist trends” and “understand the evidence about what works” to “underpin a new strategic approach to countering extremism from Government.”

Policy Exchange has been leaked the analysis paper, the capping paper, and the full recommendations of that Sprint, along with documents about a proposed Counter-Extremism Ministerial Board. They are in several respects sensible – but in other ways confused, and potentially damaging.
