The paper provides a commentary on the theme of “Current and Future Trends in Tribological Research: Fundamentals and Applications”, which is a special feature issue commemorating the 10th anniversary of the journal, Lubricants. A historical discourse is provided regarding various aspects of tribology as a multi-disciplinary subject that interacts in an inter-disciplinary manner with many other subjects: multi-body dynamics, thermofluids and heat transfer, contact mechanics, surface science, chemistry, rheology, data science, and biology, to name but a few. Such interactions lead to many important topics including propulsion with different sources of energy, mitigating emissions, palliation of friction, enhancing durability and sustainability, optimization through detailed analysis, and the use of artificial intelligence. Additionally, issues concerning kinetics at various physical scales (from macroscale to microscale onto mesoscale and nanoscale) affecting the kinematics of contacts are discussed. The broad range of considered applications includes vehicular powertrains, rotor bearings, electrical machines, mammalian endo-articular joints, nanobiological attachment/detachment, and locomotion. Current state-of-the-art tribological research is highlighted within a multi-physics, multi-scale framework, an approach not hitherto reported in the open literature.

A comparative analysis of the main types of greases and base oils for their manufacture that are used for lubricating mechanisms operating in space is performed. Their differences in terms of chemical composition , volatility, and operating temperature range are analyzed. The research results on the tribological properties of lubricating greases and on the effect of the base oil and additive types on their life are presented. The main techniques for testing the volatility, the lubricating ability, and the life of greases are reviewed.
Reducing vehicle weight contributes to reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. In practice, this is achieved by application of lightweight materials and through optimization of tribo-systems on the vehicle. The benefit of using aluminium is evident due to the reduced mass of the parts, but in parallel there is a problem due to the low strength of this metal. This is especially evident during overheating when can form cracks. The wear resistance and tribo-properties of aluminium are the problem, too. To achieve the strength and tribo-properties of aluminium alloys similar to grey cast iron, we applied eco-tribological knowledge during construction of reciprocating machines. The result of researches is patented prototype of aluminium piston and cylinder whose contact surfaces are coated or modified with inserts based on the tribo-materials.

Environmental awareness and especially the legislation that requires the reduction of polluting emissions are strong driving forces toward more sustainable engineering and greener solutions in the design, use and overall life span of machinery. However, providing novel concepts that will exclude non-environmentally adapted, but over many years developed and optimized solutions, is not an easy task. It clearly requires time if the same level of technical performance is to be maintained. Green tribology is one of the fields that has been closely involved in these actives in the past two decades. The research and use of tribology science and technology toward green and sustainable engineering include natural material usage, lower energy consumption, reducing natural oil resources, reducing pollution and emissions, fewer maintenance requirements and thus reduced machinery-investment cycles. This report is not an attempt to cover all the existing concepts, attempts or literature availabl...

Most currently used greases for space applications are based on perfluoropolyalkylethers (PFPE) and multiply alkylated cyclopentane (MAC) oils. Evaluation of the greases includes outgassing properties, rheological behavior, and particularly the ability to create EHL films under conditions as close as possible to an actual application. A spiral orbit tribometer (SOT) has been developed to conduct accelerated tests under realistic conditions. The SOT was employed to evaluate two greases used in space mechanisms: a PFPE oil with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) thickener, and a multiply alkylated cyclopentane (MAC) oil with n-octadecylterephthalamate soap. The results from the greases are in agreement with results previously obtained with the base oils.

Many moving mechanical assemblies (MMAs) for space applications rely on a small, initial charge of lubricant for the entire mission lifetime, often in excess of five years. In many cases, the premature failure of a lubricated component can result in mission failure. If lubricant could be re-supplied to the contact in-situ, the life of the MMA could be extended. A

The problem of overweight containers becomes a majo r concern of the maritime community. Huge number of containers are damaged and /or lost overboard every year as a result of stow collapse due to overweigh t containers. Apart from that, this problem affects in a dangerou s way the safety of ships by affecting the ships in tact stability. The maritime industry efforts continue to find a possib le solving problem solution in order to prevent acc idents but the problem still remained open. This paper presents th e risks involved in overweight containers and the i mpact of this problem on the maritime safety and safety of ships.

There are continuous efforts on efficient and compact power transmitting aids and one of them is planetary gearbox find a major role in automotive and industrial applications. Planetary gearboxes are widely used where high power density with reduced dynamic vibrations and quiet operations is expected. Planetary gear transmissions have proved multi-fold advantages in comparison to conventional transmissions. The power gets divided over several planets resulting in a compact arrangement. In this paper, a review on the design, analysis, and optimization of a multistage planetary gearbox for a higher gear reduction ratio used for power transmissions is presented.

The reach of tribology has expanded in diverse fields and tribology related research activities have seen immense growth during the last decade. This review takes stock of the recent advances in research pertaining to different aspects of tribology within the last 2 to 3 years. Different aspects of tribology that have been reviewed including lubrication, wear and surface engineering, biotribology, high temperature tribology, and computational tribology. This review attempts to highlight recent research and also presents future outlook pertaining to these aspects. It may however be noted that there are limitations of this review. One of the most important of these is that tribology being a highly multidisciplinary field, the research results are widely spread across various disciplines and there can be omissions because of this. Secondly, the topics dealt with in the field of tribology include only some of the salient topics (such as lubrication, wear, surface engineering, biotribolo...

The spark-ignited reciprocating internal combustion engine has been the powerplant of choice for automotive and light truck applications for over 100 years. Whether this engine type will remain dominant in the future will depend on automakers' ability to find economically viable solutions to many constraints. Legislative demands continue to mount for better fuel economy, reduced exhaust emissions, increased recycleability and freedom from hazardous substances. Simultaneously, consumers are reluctant to accept any decrease in performance, features, range, quality and reliability. The tribological implications of changes in current engine materials are discussed. While these challenges are formidable, it is considered likely that, through evolution, the reciprocating engine will remain ahead of its more revolutionary competitors (e.g. fuel cells) for many years to come.

Harmonic Drive® gears are used in several space flight mechanisms such as SADM’s or pointing mechanisms. Main reasons for choosing the gears are advantages like zero backlash, high gear stiffness and high transmission accuracy. Nowadays typically grease lubrication is used, whereas this is linked to the risk of outgassing and limits the operational temperature. In order to increase the temperature range, trials to apply solid lubricants to Harmonic Drive® gears, were performed. Based on these trials it was found that the gears can be operated even at -269°C. Anyhow, although being used in various cryogenic applications, the reachable lifetime is comparably short. So as to improve the achievable endurance an essential development was necessary. Hence the EU – funded project HarmLES was executed in order to significantly increase the accessible lifetime. Following an integrated approach covering gear design, materials and coating, the prototype of a new Harmonic Drive® gear type was d...
