In this article, I begin by overviewing Kato’s background and his relevance to the global church. I originally explored Kato in my dissertation A Critical Analysis of Byang Kato’s Demonology and Its Theological Relevance for an Evangelical Demonology, and my intent is to draw from that research and build upon it with recent contributions concerning Kato and from the demonological field. For example, Aiah Foday-Khabenje’s newly published Byang Kato: The Life and Legacy of Africa’s Pioneer Evangelical Theologian is a significant step forward for the academic study of Kato. I also assess and analyze Kato’s theological integration of biblical demonology and soteriology, utilizing a chronological survey of personal soteriology (i.e., how we were saved, how we are being saved, and how we will be saved). In each case, Kato’s contributions include analyzing the demonic, emphasizing deliverance not only from sin but also from demons.

While primarily reflecting on Kato's unique perspective and evaluating the relationship between his demonology and soteriology, I also interact with the wealth of contributions to Evangelical demonology in the past six years (i.e., Graham Cole’s Against the Darkness; John Gilhooly’s 40 Questions about Angels, Demons, and Spiritual Warfare; Michael Heiser’s Demons, Andrew Naselli’s The Serpent and the Serpent Slayer; and Daniel Darko’s Against Principalities and Powers). Ultimately, I argue that Kato integrates demonology and soteriology in a way that is both sensitive to the experience of Global Evangelicalism and the exposition of Scripture. In that light, I propose some suggestions (supported by Kato and recent scholarship) for the continued development of Christian soteriology that it may more accurately reflect the demonological realities of Scripture. In sum, this article outlines Kato’s life, clarifies the relationship between Kato’s demonology and soteriology, offers an evaluation of Kato’s soteriology and demonology based on current scholarship, and poses a few suggestions for the integration of demonology into Evangelical soteriology.

Introduction: though highly fascinating, Revelation is also a difficult book to interpret. It is the end, the culmination of millenniums of time and prophecies. Consequently, every little bit of Bible knowledge one can possibly acquire will help in the proper interpretation and understanding of this book. We may not understand it all, but we will understand much more each time we prayerfully endeavor to learn God’s Word. It appears most discouragement lies in the erroneous human tendency to speculate in details not given. Revelation is understandable as to the general events of the future. Much detail is simply not given.
In preparation for the study of Revelation, it seems appropriate to think first about the magnificent intelligence of God, and the fact that He does every thing in good, perfect order. Mathematics, one of the chief tools of order is seen in every phase of the universe.

A common cause of erroneous interpretation and irrelevant application of some Bible texts is interpreters’ failure to recognize the different circumstances that existed when events the Bible records occurred. If one is not careful, he can impose current circumstances onto Scripture. We today not only have the completed Word of God, but we also have behind us a two-thousand year history of Christianity which impacts our views. Those who lived during Bible times had neither of these things. The world in which we live is, in many respects, vastly different from the world in which people of Bible times lived. The biblical world and, especially the world of the Old Testament (OT), was not Christian.

What was the nature of the message the church was to speak to Archippus? Was it encouragement to continue faithfully in his God-assigned work? Or was the message rather intended to “stir up” to renewed activity a back-slidden preacher who was neglecting at least some element of his work? Though we do not know what Paul and the church knew, the natural implication is that Archippus’s commitment to the work of the ministry of the Word had waned. If he was fulfilling his ministry, Paul would have worded his message differently.

Theologian Robert Masson states that humans employ cognitive tool called metaphoric blending to create a mental space for thinking about God. Without metaphor, the conception of a “saving” God, or the possibility of any God-talk, could not exist at all. Masson provides a nuanced theory of theological language. Following the recent developments of cognitive metaphor theory, Masson bases his claim on a worldview that constitutes reality through metaphoric conceptualisation. Metaphors spring from embodied human experience. His initiative challenges purely secular reductionistic theories, which deny the possibility of any God-talk, as well as fundamentalist theories based on straightforward literal interpretations of biblical language. Ultimately, Masson proposes a change in the semantics of “literal” and “figurative”: while metaphoric truths, such as JESUS IS THE MESSIAH, cannot be understood as literal truths, they are “semantically proper”. There is no theology without metaphor.

Following Masson’s aspiration to produce a more nuanced theory, this study aims to challenge the secular epistemology of cognitive metaphor theory along with Masson’s rejection of a more direct and literal conception of God. This paper attempts to build on biblical-theological epistemology that affirms a biblical new-creational perspective on language and metaphorical speech. Hence, this study aims to understand the spiritual nature of metaphors by analysing biblical metaphors and suggesting how metaphors could be best explained by the embodied future presence of Christ opening up truly new-creational space. This spiritual new-creational realm precedes the cognitive space and its embodied mind paradigm as the new realm becomes immanently present in the metaphoric discourse. Metaphorical texts are encased in the biblical-theological timeline and received by faith.

Most modern Christians unconsciously inherit a cosmology shaped more by classical Greek dualism than by the biblical narrative. This has led to an assumption that “heaven” is an immaterial, otherworldly realm, disconnected from the physical cosmos. In contrast, this paper argues that heaven is part of the created order—composed of real, albeit non-baryonic, matter—and that spiritual beings such as angels and demons are not immaterial spirits but conscious agents composed of exotic substance embedded within the same universe we inhabit.
Drawing from Scripture, theology, and speculative insights from physics, this study challenges traditional ontological categories and proposes a unified cosmological framework in which the spiritual and physical interact structurally, not symbolically. Just as Job declares that the heavens are corrupt and even the holy ones are not trusted, and as Revelation foretells the renewal of both heaven and earth, so too this paper explores a model in which the divide between the visible and invisible is not eternal but awaiting glorification. In doing so, it offers a theological response to both scientific mystery and metaphysical longing.

This contribution first intends to problematize these questions, theoretically: what kind of ecological perspective can arise from Christological reflection? What can be the specific contribution of Christianity to the emergence of a new ecological cosmology? Such questions as these will be addressed through analysis of the thought of two important authors, Teilhard de Chardin and Matthew Fox. Finally, at the end of this contribution, we will propose a theoretical perspective which, starting from the thought of the two authors, identifies in the idea of incarnation proper to the Cosmic Christ that theoretical dimension capable of reawakening Christianity in its implicit ecological dimensions.

In many parts of contemporary Christian life it is either ignored or made a touchstone of faith (in one or other of the particular versions in which it manifests). Where it is preached, it is often polemical; where it is taught, it is often analytical or philosophical; and it is rarely visible as a constructive or comforting motif in pastoral texts. We have failed in many places to heed Maury's wisdom: "To determine the true link between election and faith, we need to, above all, avoid speaking abstractly of either of these terms" 2 For much of Christian history, election has been at the heart of Christian understanding, has fuelled the missional and pastoral task of the Church, and has informed human self-understanding in the light of the revealed nature of God. As Mark Lindsay has noted (see Lindsay p3 SIMON) the doctrine of election was inextricably linked with the vocation of preacher for Barth as for Calvin, and similarly for Maury. At a merely instrumental level, the preacher wonders why some hearers respond to the call to repentance, the offer of life and the wonder of hope. Preachers also wonder why some do not. Pastorally it is profoundly vexing that many who hear do not come to know the saving gift of God (and perhaps that many who claim to know it seem untransformed by it). Secondly, how can the immutability and atemporal nature of the second Person of the Trinity be reconciled with the mutability and temporal nature of the human Jesus Christ -how can these two differing natures be combined in a single Person? Thirdly and consequent upon the second objection, if there is a single Christ (divine and human), how can the will and nature in the human Jesus Christ be distinct from the will and nature of the second Person of the Trinity? Pawl argues that conciliar Christology can be defended on philosophical grounds against these objections. The council of Chalcedon declared in 451. 'We teach . . . one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, perfect in divinity and perfect in humanity, truly God and truly man, of a rational soul and a body . . . acknowledged in two natures which undergo no confusion, change, division or separation . . . so the property of both natures is preserved and comes together into a single person'. Regarding the key words of person and nature, the definition of Chalcedon represents the most concise and authoritative statement of the first seven councils. However, their Christological teaching was more spacious, or open to development, than is generally assumed. Greek, not Latin, was the language of Chalcedon as it was for all the first seven ecumenical councils. For the key words of person and nature, the Greek words in Chalcedon's definition are 'hupostasis/prosopon' and 'phusis', words that are more spacious than the Latin 'persona' and 'natura' -or at least the meaning these Latin words have acquired. Thus the following variety of meanings for 'hupostasis' are listed in a Greek-English dictionary: support, resistance, lying in ambush, confidence, courage, resolution, wealth or property . . . reality or nature, and many others. Augustine recognized that in Latin 'persona' and 'natura' were the best words to use while acknowledging that they were imprecise translations of the Greek and therefore should be used with caution. Here and in other cases Rawls might have given more attention to the elasticity of the Greek original in the conciliar definitions. rather than relying on the words in English or Latin translation. The argument of the book is sophisticated and complex but clearly set out. The interaction of philosophy and theology is a common theme: the originality of this book is the focus of this interaction upon Christology in the first seven ecumenical councils. It is an original but also very important theme in view of the central role of Christology in Christian teaching and practice as well as the high authority accorded to these seven councils by Catholics, Orthodox and, for the most part, churches of the Reformation. The book is well produced and properly documented with references to the original sources. It concludes with an extensive Bibliography and an Index including topics as well as persons.

The Renaissance was replete with original and creative minds, but none perhaps as important today as Nicholas of Cusa (1401-64), as the assortment of essays collected in this timely volume seeks to demonstrate. These essays stem from presentations given at the symposium celebrating the sixth centennial of Cusa's birth, at the Catholic University of America in 2001. Cusa, the German cardinal and polymath, is often considered to be the guardian of the gate that swings from the premodern to modern periods of Western thought, a thesis proffered most famously by Ernst Cassirer in his important study The Individual and the Cosmos in Renaissance Philosophy, who traced a direct line of progress from Cusa to the scientific rationalism of the Enlightenment and beyond. However, as this collection avidly demonstrates, Cusa's relationship to the modern age is much more complex, being, paradoxically, both more fundamental and less direct. The editor of this volume, Peter Casarella, has organized a collection of papers rooted in a panoply of viewpoints, presuppositions and fields of inquiry, which, when gathered together, much like the Tegernsee monks gathered around the icon of Christ in Cusa's classic, De visione Dei, works to supplement, enrich and augment what otherwise would be more impoverished perspectives. In this way, the collection authentically represents the Cusan legacy, demonstrating the importance and enduring relevance of Cusa's conjectures in various fields (most importantly aesthetics, ecumenism, systematics, metaphysics, politics, mathematics, astronomy and homiletics). After a fine introduction by Peter Casarella, the collection begins with the first complete English translation of Cusa's valuable sermon on the Pater Noster by Frank Tobin with an analysis by Nancy Hudson. In both the translation and the commentary, this essay suggests that the most important and potentially instructive dimension of this vernacular sermon is that it presents the core themes of Cusa's thought, in a simple, didactic manner. Hudson's commentary also highlights Cusa's use of Neoplatonic images to communicate and expound Christian theological teaching, which sheds considerable light on dimensions of his metaphysics set in more complex discussion within his philosophical texts. This paper provides an overview of a recent ecumenical dialogue, the one between the Mar Thoma Syrian Church and the Old Catholic Churches of the Union of Utrecht (2011-2014) and analyses the dialogue through the lens of intercultural theology, arguing that the fields of ecumenical dialogue and intercultural theology can be brought into conversation with each other fruitfully, even if this is not currently being done in appertaining scholarship.

This paper is intended to explore the holistic philosophy of al-ʿālamīn in al-Qur'an as the basis for Universal Rights, Hak Asasi Alam Semesta (HAAS), for the lack of comprehensiveness of Human Rights, Hak Asasi Manusia (HAM), which tends to be anthropocentric-materialistic-secularistic. This research is qualitative research relying on the literature review method. The analytical tool used in this research is the Hermeneutical-philosophical paradigm of human rights and international law contained in the al-ʿālamīn concept. Al-ʿālamīn, God Sustainer of Humans, has been, is, will always be translated and interpreted with the embodiment in the form of Human Rights. Not only human rights, it also needs to be conceptualized and implemented in the discourse of Universal Rights where God is the Custodian of the Universe. HAM does not necessitate human religiosity. It is just the fulfillment of human rights to one creature, named human. HAAS, in addition to fulfilling human rights religiously and spiritually, is also primarily a blessing for the universe, including the fulfillment of human rights for all forms of natural resources, such as plants, animals, jinn, earth, planets, galaxies and so on. Therefore, the five main things that make up maqashid al-shari'ah, namely protecting religion, soul, lineage, property and mind, which have an anthropocentric tendency, become more holistic when fulfilled by protecting the universe, hifz al-ʿālamīn.

The Anglican theologian Sarah Coakley has attempted to think trinitarian doctrine in explicitly experiential terms. Her erotically-charged, pneumatically-centred account of salvific incorporation attempts to articulate, on the one hand, an account of the purgation of desire and the senses through ascetic practice, contemplative prayer and liturgical habituation, while also maintaining, on the other hand, the priority of spiritual appetition as being itself the route through which believers are, gradually, drawn into the trinitarian life.

"Es geht darum, eine phänomenologisch-deskriptive Beschreibung eines christlichen Inder-Welt-Seins zu versuchen", das sich an "ein nicht fachkundiges Publikum" richtet, aber auch Interesse in der philos. und theol. Fachwelt wecken will, "insofern sie eine Sympathie für ein phänomenologisch orientiertes Theologisieren" (13) hat. Der hermeneutische Blickwinkel dieser Reflexionen wird dabei von einem vom Vf. andernorts bereits umfassend untersuchten Adverbs bestimmt: vom "positive(n) Vielleicht" (14). 1 Die "hermeneutische Valenz dieses Adverbs" liegt für D. in der Annahme, "dass jede metaphysische Antwort auf die Gottesfrage letztlich ein ‚interpretatives Vielleicht' voraussetzt." (14f) Das "Vielleicht" verortet sich zwischen einem radikalen Skeptizismus und einem willkürlich interpretativen Entwurf, "seine Ungewissheit ist ähnlich wie die eines quasi, wahrscheinlich, möglicherweise" (16). Gerade diese Zurückhaltung, in der eine positive und eine negative Option, ein "Blick zum Licht" und "zur Dunkelheit" (ebd.) changieren, evoziert eine unaufdringliche Freiheit zur Zustimmung, insbes. wenn es um Überlieferungstraditionen wie der christl. Glaubenstradition geht. Damit rückt der Vf. Assoziationen ins rechte Licht, die der Titel des Buches auslösen könnte: die beliebte Metapher vom Sprung in den Glauben könnte auch irrationalisierende Tendenzen beschwören, man denke an Tertullians Diktum vom "credo quia absurdum" oder an den desaströsen Begriff des "sacrificium intellectus", aber der Vf. stellt klar: "Für die vom Apriori einer Offenbarung ausgehenden Theologinnen und Theologen ist der Glaube weder willkürlich oder unvernünftig noch widervernünftig, sondern übervernünftig." (8) Ob letzteres Adverb das Problem besser erfasst, sei dahingestellt. Zurecht verweist D. aber auf die grundlegende Dialektik von fides qua und fides quae. This paper aims to explore the way the evangelist Matthew illustrates the deficiency of discipleship by sketching three portrayals of deficient discipleship. The section under scrutiny is that of chapter 8:18-27 from Matthew's Gospel. The first portrayal is that of a disciple-to-be, described in terms of much enthusiasm without much understanding of the kind of teacher Jesus is (Matt 8:19-20). He is a proper illustration of the first type of deficient human attempt to follow Jesus, namely, discipleship without costs. The second portrayal, is that of an acknowledged disciple, described in terms of manifest hesitation that comes from an insufficient clarification of his existential priorities and of the kind of master Jesus is (Matt 8:21-22). This portrayal is a helpful illustration of the second type of deficient attempt to follow Jesus, namely, discipleship without commitment. The third portrayal is that of the called disciples, described in terms of fear that comes from the lack of understanding of the kind of Lord Jesus is (Matt 8:23-27). This portrayal is a realistic illustration of the third type of deficient human attempt to follow Jesus, namely, discipleship without hardships. Yet, in his answers in the encounters with the three categories of protagonists in the biblical text, Jesus offers corrections to all three types of deficient discipleship. Dopo una rapida rassegna del suo itinerario intellettuale, l'analisi si concentra sulla sua visione della teologia come intelligenza critica della fede, in cui immaginazione e sensibilità svolgono un ruolo fondamentale. L'enfasi sulla concretezza dell'esperienza di fede spiega anche il secondo elemento che viene preso in esame nell'articolo: la centralità epistemica della collaborazione tra teologia e cultural studies. This essay is a tribute to Davide Zordan ten years after his untimely death. After a brief appraisal of his intellectual path, the focus shifts on his view of theology as a critical intelligence of faith, in which both imagination and affects play a fundamental role. The emphasis on the concreteness of the experience of faith also accounts for the second topic discussed in the article: the epistemic centrality of the collaboration between theology and cultural studies. The essay ends with an attempt to draw from Zordan's latest contributions an ambitious and hopeful image of the theology of the future. The text is under review at "Studia Patavina".
