This article examines the intimate relationship between theater and diplomacy through the case of the 3rd Marquises of Los Balbases. Based on a broad approach to theater, the analysis of the theatrical activity of this cross-cultural couple provides an excellent observatory of the diplomatic possibilities that theater offered as a social event, as a language, as a physical space and as the representation of a fictional action that allowed the staging of what could not be otherwise expressed. On the basis of archival and print sources, this essay shows the role of theater in their mission in the ordinary embassy of Vienna (1670–77), the Congress of Nijmegen (1677–78), and the extraordinary embassy of Paris (1679), discovering it as a crucial resource. This work thus contributes to a better understanding of diplomatic practices during the reign of Carlos ii (1661–1700), its resources, and the importance of the means of soft power.

En las últimas décadas; La India ha sido objeto de una creciente migración
mundial que, aunque modesta, incluye una notable hispano hablante que se ha asentado en las grandes ciudades. En este estudio, que combina encuestas y entrevistas a relieves con un enfoque de métodos mixtos, se valoran los conflictos del idioma y los problemas sociales, culturales y laborales en los que estos emigrantes se encuentran, así como las técnicas que utilizan para superarlos, como aprender el idioma, crear redes comunitarias o sociales y otros.  Las conclusiones reclaman, el acento necesita incluir la transculturalización competitiva para una integración efectiva, apreciando los negocios y el intercambio cultural los bloques de construcción la comunidad hispano india, el ingreso entre las dos comunidades enriquecedor.

Actualmente son pocas las facultades de Derecho que imparten docencia sobre derecho franquista y Transición democrática. En la Facultat de Derecho de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona existe una optativa que aborda ambas cuestiones que se oferta en el cuarto curso de los grados Relaciones Laborales y Derecho. En esta asignatura no rechazamos por completo metodologías clásicas como la clase magistral, de la que también hacemos uso para introducir cuestiones sobre Justicia Transicional, pero introducimos otras más actuales como la clase invertida (“flipped classroom”) y aprendizaje por proyectos, que permiten al alumnado apropiarse de la materia que se imparte y, también, responsabilizarse de una parte de la nota final que obtendrán sus compañeros y compañeras. Además de los conocimientos sobre la historia del derecho franquista, memoria democrática y justicia transicional, se fomenta la creatividad y la crítica, guiándoles para que creen derecho aplicando todos los conocimientos jurídicos adquiridos durante el grado.

El primer texto de Aranguren sobre el intelectual (1959) ya lo señala como la conciencia moral de la sociedad. El encargado de reducir la distancia entre lo que es y lo que debe ser. En 1969 apunta la necesidad de que el intelectual se independice de la sociedad a la que pertenece para poder criticarla y ponerla en cuestión. Asimismo propone la democracia como moral. Su labor como intelectual en el franquismo y el post-franquismo resultó fundamental. Entendió el intento de golpe de estado del 23 de febrero de 1981 como el afianzamiento, la mayoría de edad, de la joven democracia española.

This article focuses on the role that early modern printed works played in the preservation and dissemination of two child murder narratives in Spain that have endured to the present day: those of Dominguito de Val and the Holy Child of La Guardia. It seeks to address the following questions: how did the narratives of Dominguito de Val and the Holy Child of La Guardia survive through the early modern period (broadly 1500 to 1800); were such tales transmitted primarily via antisemitic polemics or rather via authoritative sources whose purpose was not primarily antisemitic? To begin, this article examines the presence of these narratives in explicitly antisemitic polemics produced in the early modern Iberian Peninsula. Starting with an analysis of the transmission of the narrative of the Holy Child of La Guardia and then of Dominguito de Val, this article proceeds to analyze the role played by other forms of printed media, particularly hagiographies and local municipal histories, in their circulation and how some printed texts became authoritative sources of knowledge.

The Association for Contemporary Iberian Studies-ACIS holds an international, multidisciplinary conference in early September every year. The conference circulates between host universities in Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Ireland, and papers and panels focus on nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first century socio-cultural, economic, and political issues with a particular focus on the Iberian Peninsula and its relations with the wider Lusophone and Hispanic worlds. The atmosphere is a positive and supportive one and established academics, early career academics and postgraduates are all equally welcome.

A pesar del indudable interés de su extensa trayectoria, Juan Courten es un oficial poco conocido en comparación con otros personajes de su tiempo. Miembro de la destacada saga familiar de los Courten, con varias generaciones al servicio de los Borbones españoles, Juan estuvo presente en algunos de los principales hechos de armas de la Guerra de la Independencia. Durante el asedio de Cádiz dirigió a sus superiores un documento que ofrece cuantiosa información: su solicitud o memorial de ascenso a mariscal de campo fechada el 3 de noviembre de 1810. La misma permite reconstruir su trayectoria y los elementos principales de la de sus antepasados, pero también nos habla de las mentalidades de la época y de la defensa de los derechos personales y familiares en un contexto de resistencia nacional ante una invasión extranjera.

El sustantivo latino HŌRA (‘división temporal del día’, ‘tiempo determinado para hacer algo’) constituye en las lenguas románicas el núcleo de numerosos compuestos adverbiales. En esta comunicación, que representa la segunda parte de un análisis sobre estos compuestos en el aragonés medieval, atendemos a la forma agora (‘en este momento’, ‘en la actualidad’) en la Grant Crónica de Espanya (1385), obra en aragonés patrocinada por Juan Fernández de Heredia. Concretamente, analizamos su empleo en el discurso directo y en la narración, describiendo su posición en el hilo discursivo, así como las funciones que ha desarrollado, sobre todo de adverbio temporal pero también de marcador metatextual o discursivo y de locución conjuntiva. La capacidad de agora de señalar contraste se presenta como un rasgo fundamental para entender su funcionamiento tanto adverbial como discursivo.

La conversión de las milicias medievales y de su evolución en unas fuerzas voluntarias y mercenarias, a un verdadero ejército de leva -formado por todos los ciudadanos del Estado-se produjo, en resumidas cuentas, a partir de la Revolución Francesa y quedó consolidado en el ejército nacional prusiano durante la unificación alemana. Así, la construcción del Estado nacional -como nos señala Hagen SCHULZE ( 35 )-tuvo mucho que ver en la imbricación conocida de los conceptos y realidades de patria, nación y Estado con los ejércitos que las defienden, conforman y, en cierto modo, representan. Este modelo contemporáneo, surgido en el siglo XIX, supuso el control, con mayores o menores dificultades, de la fuerza militar por el Parlamento y, por ello, con la voluntad soberana del pueblo y de sus gobiernos representativos, imitando el modelo británico.

This article analyzes the successful legal struggle of Lope Rodriguez, a Castilian converso who in 1478, following his banishment from his town, petitioned for royal justice. While Rodriguez's case offers new information on conflicts between Old Christians and conversos in pre-inquisitorial Castile, it also sheds light on Castilian legal culture more broadly. Drawing on previously unpublished records from Rodriguez's dossier, the article analyzes how petitions and witness deposition records were deployed as weapons in one local conflict. Since such records were crucial for generating royal interventions in local disputes, effective documentary strategies could sometimes affect power relations on the local level. However, the analysis of Rodriguez's case also demonstrates that the capacity to produce and mobilize records was in itself a highly politicized process, in which local configurations of power often came to play a significant role.

This article recovers a fifteenth-century debate over the meaning of the category "conversos." Departing from the standard account, in which "conversos" is seen as a neutral category designating Jewish ancestry, we demonstrate that in fifteenth-century Castile, the question of "who is a converso?" had a much less certain answer. Rather than a consistent view of how Jewish converts and their descendants should be classified, contemporary discourses reveal a myriad of options and a deep sense of consciousness about the implications of terminological choices. Drawing on a large range of historical sources, we analyze this terminological struggle, while paying special attention to the debates that followed the revolt of Toledo of 1449. We examine the arguments made by those who sought-or resisted-labeling the descendants of Jews as "conversos" or "neophytes." Furthermore, we explain how debates over such labels were linked to broader interpretations of the meaning of conversion from Judaism to Christianity. Finally, we demonstrate that although the descent-based interpretation of "conversos" eventually prevailed, the problem of classifying Christians of Jewish descent continued to haunt political discourses well into the reign of Isabel I and Fernando II (1474-1504). Περίληψη: Σκοπός του παρόντος άρθρου είναι η εξέταση της διαχείρισης των μετακομμουνιστικών Βαλκανίων σε ελληνικά φιλμικά κείμενα. Η ιστορική συγκυρία, όπως αυτή διαμορφώνεται στη Βαλκανική ήδη από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1990, χαρακτηρίζεται από γενικευμένη πολιτική και κοινωνική αστάθεια, οικονομικές δυσχέρειες, αλλά και την ταυτόχρονη αναζήτηση μιας ευρωπαϊκής ταυτότητας με σαφή στόχο τη δυτικοποίηση και τον εκσυγχρονισμό των βαλκανικών κρατών. El carácter revolucionario de los comienzos de la democratización lusa generó una compleja identificación de los sectores de centroderecha más o menos próximos a la dictadura con la nueva etapa que vivía el país. Inicialmente, estos sectores bascularon entre un relato favorable al cambio político, apoyando por ello al Movimento das Forças Armadas (MFA) -verdadero tutor del proceso-, y las críticas a la deriva izquierdista en los momentos de mayor agitación. La llegada del Verão Quente de 1975 supuso la ruptura del democristiano Centro Democrático Social (CDS) con el MFA y su proyecto político, adoptando en adelante un discurso disidente. Discurso al que se sumaría el Partido Popular Democrático (PPD) inmersos ya en la etapa posrevolucionaria, en un contexto convergente con el modelo europeo occidental que motivaría un cuestionamiento de la revolución a través de una memoria crítica del pasado reciente.

Il n'est plus question aujourd'hui de penser l'État sans son corollaire de bons et de mauvais cadeaux. La question étant de savoir où s'arrête la libéralité et où commence la corruption ». C'est en ces termes qu'Élodie Lecuppre-Desjardin, dans un article de 2018, souligne la place centrale occupée par « l'économie du don » dans les pratiques gouvernementales des sociétés de la fin du Moyen Âge, mais aussi les enjeux et les difficultés que recouvre sa définition. Les occasions de donner et de recevoir étaient effectivement nombreuses dans les sociétés anciennes. Depuis l'ouvrage pionnier de Marcel Mauss, Essai sur le don (1925), les travaux historiques n'ont pas manqué de souligner l'importance et la vigueur de ces pratiques au sein des liens sociaux qui unissaient les individus entre eux ou vis-à-vis d'une autorité, qu'elle soit politique, religieuse, morale, etc. Qu'ils agissent de manière directe, par leurs formes par exemple, ou de manière indirecte, par la communication symbolique qui se déploie au moment de la transaction, les dons sont omniprésents dans les sphères décisionnelles des sociétés médiévales. En outre, les travaux récents, à travers le dépassement de la rupture entre un Moyen Âge dominé par l'économie du don et une modernité marquée par la domination du système numéraire, ont démontré la pertinence des gratifications comme clef de voûte d'un réseau d'obligations réciproques, liant les hommes entre eux dans le cadre d'une « économie de la faveur ». Utiliser ce paradigme anthropologique offre donc un prisme privilégié pour observer ces pratiques mais soulève encore de nombreuses problématiques. Ces thématiques mettent en évidence de multiples questions : comment caractériser ces pratiques et déterminer leur place dans la pensée politique médiévale ? Quels rôles jouaient-elles dans la circulation des richesses et des hommes ? Quelle place tenait cette « économie de la faveur » dans les gouvernements médiévaux ecclésiastiques, royaux, princiers, seigneuriaux ou urbains et leur système de représentation ? Au-delà du numéraire, quels étaient les objets qui pouvaient être offerts et dans quelles perspectives ? Comment ces pratiques étaient-elles perçues, appréciées voire condamnées par les contemporains ?

Badania nad stereotypami narodowymi stały się w ostatnim czasie w tym samym stopniu modne, co konieczne -w dobie silnie zacieśniających się relacji międzykulturowych (biznesowych, naukowych, politycznych itp.) gromadzenie informacji na temat tego komponentu procesów poznawczych stało się niezbędne. Stereotyp Hiszpana, będący przedmiotem niniejszej pracy, wydaje się wyrazisty i mocno zaznaczony w świadomości Polaków -same leksemy Hiszpan czy Hiszpania uruchamiają szerokie pole skojarzeniowe oraz reakcję emocjonalną. Istotne jest jednak nie tylko dokładne opisanie tego stereotypu, lecz również analiza jego genezy, będąca jednocześnie próbą dekonstrukcji tego tworu i krytycznego spojrzenia na jego treść. Pozwoli to, z jednej strony, głębiej zrozumieć specyfikę sposobu postrzegania Hiszpanów w Polsce, z drugiej zaś -zyskać informacje na temat autostereotypu Polaków. Warto przytoczyć słowa Leszka Kołakowskiego, wypowiadającego się o tego rodzaju badaniach w następujących słowach: Badanie stereotypów narodowych […] może przyczynić się wielce do zrozumienia "narodowych charakterów"; nie dlatego, by stereotypy dostarczały nam zwierciadlanych wizerunków innych narodów, czego nie czynią z całą pewnością, ale dlatego, że osądzając innych, my sami mimo woli odsłaniamy nasze własne sposoby percepcji, a przez to również własne przywary i zalety. Innymi słowy: stereotypy uczą nas nie mniej o tych, co w nie wierzą, niż o tych, do których się odnoszą 1 .

Resumen: En el presente trabajo se expone un breve análisis de la evolución táctica y armamentística durante la Edad Moderna. La principal tesis de este artículo reside en el incuestionable impacto que tuvieron los avances tecnológicos en el devenir de las tácticas empleadas durante el periodo. En primer lugar, se detallan las principales causas que motivaron los primeros cambios armamentísticos de la Edad Moderna temprana y que, a su vez, contribuirían a un cambio tanto conceptual como práctico del ejercicio de la guerra. Como veremos, desde finales del siglo XV hasta el final de la Guerra de los Treinta Años se adoptará un tipo de táctica fundamentada en la infantería armada con picas flanqueada por arcabuceros y organizada en compactos batallones cuyo máximo exponente serán los Tercios españoles, los cuales dominarán los campos de batalla europeos durante buena parte de los siglos XVI y XVII. Asimismo, tras hacer un breve recorrido por el tipo de armamento y tácticas empleadas durante esta mitad, asistiremos a los cambios tecnológicos y, por ende, tácticos que se implementarán en los ejércitos europeos a finales del siglo XVII y principios del siglo XVIII. La proliferación de innovaciones como el fusil-bayoneta eliminarán del campo de batalla la figura del piquero y del arcabucero como unidades independientes, aglutinando el rol de ambos el nuevo infante armado con un fusil que, de ser necesario, podía convertirse en una pica al calar la bayoneta. Los ejércitos pasarán a formar en filas para adaptarse a la creciente potencia de fuego, abandonarán las armaduras y se implementará una férrea disciplina en los combatientes, pues esta resultaba indispensable para desarrollar las nuevas tácticas. En esta época, Federico II de Prusia hará de este reino la mayor potencia militar terrestre del momento perfeccionando todas estas innovaciones, así como implementando las suyas propias. Para completar este recorrido por la historia de los ejércitos modernos mencionaré los principales conflictos de cada periodo y como en ellos se ven representados dichos cambios o avances. A modo de conclusión, veremos como el gran desarrollo militar de este periodo histórico contribuyó plenamente a la formación de los Estados modernos.

The needs that changed and diversified with the political, technological and scientific developments in the 21st century have brought about new risks and threats. New dimensions of security have started to be discussed against newly emerging risks and threats in international relations. Among the new security issues, the sea comes to the fore both as an area of expansion of states and as an area that gains importance in terms of military, energy, economic and ecological (environmental) security aspects. At this point, maritime policies, which have become a geostrategic need for states in regions that have become areas of power struggle due to their geopolitical positions, tend to change and develop too. Today, the Mediterranean is one of the regions where these power struggles take place just like in history. The necessities and basic factors that paved the way for the 15th and 16th century Turkish (Ottoman) domination in the Mediterranean basin, which is the cradle of Turkish seafaring, were evaluated within the framework of sea power theories and the decision-making model put forward within the scope of the study in terms of shedding light on the present day. Objective: In this study, an evaluation from a historical perspective was made based on the analysis model of the maritimization policy, which was formed within the framework of philosophical, cultural and theoretical foundations in the Mediterranean. With this evaluation, the building blocks in the formation of the Turkish maritime policy were tried to be shown. In this study, a qualitative research method was used and a literature review was conducted on the subject. In the light of the historical and theoretical information that was obtained, an analysis of the period, which is the subject of the study, was tried to be made. The necessities and opportunities arising from the external conjuncture in the formation of the Turkish (Ottoman) maritime policy in the 15th and 16th centuries were determined with this study, and accordingly, the abilities of the decision-makers to benefit from these opportunities were shown. In addition, the events that formed the basis of the Turkish (Ottoman) maritime domination and sea power in the period in question were handled from a different perspective; and in this context, the emergence of the Turkish pirates, who constituted the source of the Turkish sea power of the period, and the Christianization policies that Spain applied to the Muslim and Jewish peoples in the Iberian Peninsula were associated. Originality: Within the scope of the study, a new decision-making model has been developed for the formulation of maritimization policies. In addition, the effect of the deportation policy implemented by Spain in the relevant period on the formation of the Turkish sea power was revealed for the first time.

A pesar de lo cuestionable de su actuación, la creación dela primera audiencia en Nueva España marcó un cambio profundo en las estructuras políticas del futuro virreinato. Ademas de que se estableció un régimen de representación monárquica, los diferentes actores en el proceso (oidores, frailes, obispos, cabildo y nobleza indígena) fueron conformando las bases corporativas de la sociedad y con sus reacciones establecieron las bases de una cultura política de negociación y resistencia que continúa hasta hoy.

The urban soundscape of the Transition to democracy was composed of various kinds of collective voicing. The noises of demonstrations, marches and strikes frequently dominated Spanish cities during this period, with their auditory presence intensifying after the legalization of political meetings and associations in July 1976, which was followed by the decriminalization of strikes in May 1977. Countless protests in favor of democracy, political amnesty and workers' rights drew on the affective power of the collective voice -whether through chanting, shouting or singing -to bring about political and social change. Several of the acoustic strategies used by pro-democratic groups, however, were also re-appropriated by a resurgent far right -in particular by Blas Piñar and Fuerza Nueva (New Force) 1 -who used the voice in its various manifestations as a means of creating sonic disruption and conflict. While according to Kunreuther, the "voice serves as a metaphor for political participation" and "liberal democracy is founded on the ideal that every adult citizen has a voice . . . and that these voices/votes are functionally equivalent to each other" (1), the extreme right used the voice not as a means of dialogue but as a means of reappropriating and dominating public space. This chapter explores the ways in which the far right sought to destabilize and transform the process of democratization through sound. Through examining the auditory dimensions of counter protests, military processions, rallies and terrorist attacks, it shows how the production of acoustic conflict was a crucial yet overlooked strategy of the extreme right. In drawing on several different sources -from documentary footage and films to "earwitness" accounts in the press and sound archive recordings -the chapter will attempt show the extent to which the soundscape of urban Spain during the Transition was shaped and contested by the far right. In doing so, it ultimately explores how the extreme right used -and continues to use today -the affective power of sound in an attempt to change the course of Spanish history. The roots of the noisy radicalization of the far right in Spain go back to the aperturismo (opening up) of the 1960s, as extremist groups became increasingly antagonistic towards the modernizing stance of the regime. Paul Preston and Sophie Baby show how the growing hostility of the far right was a reaction against the rise of student and workers movements, as well as Franco's sidelining of the Falange in favor of the modernizing Opus Dei within

fundado en 1993, pero con antecedentes mucho más remotos, tiene ya una larga tradición en lo que respecta a organizar congresos científicos, tanto de carácter histórico como interdisciplinario, sobre temas latinoamericanos y españoles. El Grupo de Investigación de Historia de América Latina formado en 1982 que sentó la base del departamento actual en 1987 ya acogió el VIII Congreso de AHILA (Asociación de Historiadores Latinoamericanistas Europeos) con la participación de más de 200 expertos reconocidos de 32 países diferentes. El tema central del Congreso fue Iglesia, religión y sociedad en la historia latinoamericana . The recurring use of Tiberius’ portrait in political literature became central to Spanish Tacitism, offering a framework for governance that intertwined political necessity and religious morality. This study connects theoretical and ethical debates around Ragion di Stato with the practical realities of governance in early modern Spain, emphasizing the political and religious prudence that guided the Spanish monarchy.

This seminar offers an introduction early Modern Spanish paleography and the organization of the General Archive of Simancas and an insight into the rich sources of the Spanish monarchy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Using a hands-on approach, students will learn to analyze original documents and to read and transcribe sources in early modern Spanish and in other languages, enabling students to read documents at the AGS and from across the global empire of Early Modern Spain.

In this article, we examine the views of R. Abraham Shalom on practice and belief, and the implications of his perspective on the converso question. We argue that, according to R. Abraham Shalom, Judaism is defined by both faith and practice. A significant and original aspect of his view is the interdependence of belief and practice: all who observe the commandments thereby demonstrate their beliefs, and it is impossible to attain supernatural truth without the practice of the commandments. This theory excludes conversos from the Jewish community, as they are unable to practice the commandments and lack a genuine understanding of Judaism. Additionally, we compare R. Abraham Shalom's position to more inclusive views, such as those of R. Hasdai Crescas and R. Josef Albo.
