Heidelberg University’s research in ancient Nineveh, which began in 2018, continued in 2021–2023. In the late Assyrian Military Palace on Tell Nebi Yunus, the excavations concentrated on the rooms on the north-west and south-west sides of the throne room. Further investigations were carried out on Tell Kuyunjik. In the throne room wing of the Southwest Palace, the fragments of the relief decoration smashed by the Islamist terrorists were uncovered, measured, inventoried and secured for the planned restoration in a specially built storage. Following earlier Iraqi excavations in the central area of the North Palace, surveys and additional sondages were carried out with the aim of georeferencing the older plans of the building. In addition, geo- archaeological investigations were carried out at a number of sites in the urban area of Nineveh and in the area of its fortifications.

The figure of the warrior occupies a key position in both scholarly and popular representations of the Viking Age. Despite this, many aspects of martial culture and lifeways during the period remain obscure. In order to address this issue, this article offers an exploration of the identities, roles, and social position of warrior groups in Viking-Age Scandinavia. We adopt a recently developed institutional approach for the study of the archaeological record, which allows us to target and analyse a number of key properties that shed light on the objectives, activities, and ideologies of these groups. In doing so, we mobilise and combine a range of evidence types, deriving from both archaeological and textual sources, which collectively have the potential to provide a more holistic understanding of warrior institutions and their place within the wider social formations that constituted prehistoric society. Our analysis reveals the complex networks of obligation and dependency that not only bound these institutions together, but which also influenced and shaped the ways in which they interacted with their communities.

U radu se prikazuju vrtujci i picuni - jednostavna suhozidna kamena zdanja na području Vele Luke u čijoj se gradnji primjenjuje konzolna tehnika. Na temelju terenskog pregleda, literature, kazivanja i arhivskih izvora analizira se njihovo nazivlje, tehnika gradnje, smještaj u prostoru, podrijetlo, datacija i graditelji. U interpretaciji podrijetla i tehnike gradnje posebno su u fokusu klačine (vapnenice) s kojima ih povezuje konstruktivni element pseudokupole i graditelji, a dodirne točke u oblikovanju vrtujaka pronalaze se u istarskim kažunima. U radu se donosi popis svih vrtujaka i picuna s lokacijom i osnovnim karakteristikama. Polazeći od dimenzija vrtujaka na teorijskoj razini se razmatraju moguća pravila koja su korištena prilikom izgradnje vrtujaka s posebnim naglaskom na konstrukciju pseudokupole

Of Graves, Trees and Constellations addresses the debate on the anthropogenic hypothesis of Florentino Ameghino, who postulated a South American origin of human beings during a period marked by intense scientific controversies in prehistoric studies.
Historiographies related to Ameghino’s hypothesis typically conclude either with the death of this renowned naturalist from the Plata region (1911) or with the publication of Hrdlička et al. (1912). Thus, the historical period immediately following these events has been characterized as a “theoretical vacuum” (González, 1991–92), a “point of inertia” (Madrazo, 1985), or “theoretical chaos” (Politis, 1988). Moreover, as Schávelzon (2018, p.58) points out, “Ameghino died in 1911 unaware of the discussions his studies had generated, which were continued by his successors and opponents” and which, as noted by Tonni (2011, p.436), “until recently, Argentine researchers ignored.”

In this paper we analyzed a batch of 64 clay weights from three archaeological sites located in Romania (Gumelniţa, Măgura-Jilava, and Sultana) that belong to Kodjadermen-Gumelniţa-Karanovo VI cultural complex (4600–3900 cal. BC). Our approach includes an interdisciplinary investigation based on technological analysis, experimental archaeology, and X-ray CT scans coupled with statistical analysis. This investigation has a high potential to reveal relevant information regarding the technological background (e.g., inclusion, voids, temper, etc.), manufacturing stages (e.g., modeling, shaping, kneading, etc.), or transformation processes (e.g., drying and firing vs. weight and size modification) in order to identify, explain and understand thechaîne operatoirefor this type of artefacts. Les auteurs présentent une lettre inédite du chanoine Pinier, Supérieur de l'Externat Saint-Maurille d'Angers, à Adrien Blanchet, qui apporte des informations complémentaires sur les fouilles qu'il venait d'effectuer dans et à côté de la collégiale Saint-Martin d'Angers à l'été 1913.

During an archaeological excavation conducted between February and April 2024, under the scientific direction of the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the metropolitan area of Naples, in a private property located in the north-west area of Nola, in the locality of Bracciolla along Via Nazionale delle Puglie, traces of a Middle Bronze Age 3 occupation were found. The investigated evidence consists of two semicircular channels and one rectangular channel, unfortunately disturbed by the presence of inhumation burials from later periods (7th century B.C. and 4th-3rd century B.C.) and spoliation pits from the modern period. The typological analysis of the pottery collected revealed a remarkable homogeneity of the material culture identified in Nola with that of the same period attested at other sites in Campania.

En 1913, Zacharie Le Rouzic publia une amulette gravée, accompagnée d'une brève description et d'une illustration. L'objet avait été trouvé en 1892 à proximité des trois dolmens de Mané Kerioned (Plouharnel, Carnac, Morbihan). Compte tenu des progrès réalisés depuis environ 25 ans dans l'identification et l'interprétation des gravures néolithiques dans le Morbihan, une nouvelle évaluation de ce petit objet est proposée ici, en tenant également compte des cupulettes qui s'y trouvent. La forme et
l´ensemble des gravures de la petite plaque en schiste, qui pourrait peut-être considérée comme une amulette, présentent des correspondances avec le corpus des gravures et des arrangements récurrents de cupules rencontrés en Bretagne entre la fin du Mésolithique et le Néolithique moyen. Le programme du planétarium "Stellarium" permet d'illustrer facilement l'éventail des résultats. Les conclusions présentées sont une évidence supplémentaire que les superstructures intellectuelles en général et les contextes cartographiques astronomiques en particulier ont peut-être été reléguées un peu trop precipité par certains représentants de l'archéologie préhistorique en Europe dans le domaine de l'inexplorable. Cela peut paraître étonnant au vu de l'importance culturelle incontestable des symboles astraux évidents, du proche Orient pré-métallique (entre autres aussi des constellations de cupulettes sur des sceaux cylindriques) jusqu'en Asie de l'Est.

The thesis deals with glass vessels from the Roman auxiliary fort at Iža, bridgehead of Brigetio. The finds come from both phases of its existence (175 – last quarter of the 4th century), and also from the postvalentinian period (till the half of the 5th century). The main goal of the thesis was to create detailed analysis of the glass vessels within context of the glass-production in the northern Pannonia. The finds consists of 3216 glass
fragments, but only 25 % of them were identified typologically. Most of them were used for drinking. Other vessels served as a container for olis, cosmetics and ointments, to serve liquids and food, to store liquids and for other purposes. Vessels, which are from the period till the half of the 3rd century, were most probably produced in the glass workshop in Brigetio. Origin of the later artefacts is questionable. Some of them could be imported from other provinces.

Темата го опфаќа перидот од раѓањето па се до заоѓањето на антиката во Брегалничкиот басен односно периодот од 5 век пред н.е. па се до крајот или првата деценија на 7 век, период кога со аваро словенските напади биле уништени и запалени сите доцноантички населби и утврдувања. Во рамките на античкиот период покрај тоа што се употребуваат и усовршуват градежни техники од праисторијата (opus caementicum, opus incertum и други), се појавуваат и нови техники на ѕидање (opus guadratum, opus mixtum, opus testaceum, opus vitatum, opus emplektion, комбинирана техника на ѕидање во која се вклучени две или три градежни техники). The determination of the potential risks and dangers as well as their degree of danger on the archaeological sites in the upper flow of the river Bregalnica is of strategic importance to them. Thus, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the profile of the potential hazards and the elements of risk on archaeological sites will contribute to preventing them from destruction and damage. Towards all this adding and capacity, communication and coordination with the subjects of culture, protection and rescue, crisis management and others those involved in this issue with a responsible and effective implementation of the necessary measures to prevent and deal with assessed risks and hazards will enable more efficient protection and rescue of archaeological sites in case of their occurrence

Овие истражувања се продолжение на минатогодишните, кога на овој локалитет беа откриени остатоци (камени орудија) од средниот палеолит. Носител на истражувањата е Институтот за Историја и Археологија при Факултетот за Образовни Науки на Универзитетот Гоце Делчев од Штип. Whether a refugium, a transit area, or both, the Balkan Peninsula played a crucial role in the population dynamics of Europe during prehistory. However, the Balkans Peninsula is poorly represented in the European archaeological record. This article presents the newly discovered Middle Palaeolithic stone tool assemblage from the Uzun Mera site in the eastern Republic of Macedonia. Following fieldwork that included diverse methods in survey and excavation, as well as techno-economical and taphonomic assessment of the recovered stone tools, Uzun Mera is reported here as a typical Middle Palaeolithic assemblage that follows the pattern of a highly variable Balkan complex. The quality of the raw material reflects a highly selective approach, resulting in relatively low lithological variability where small blocks of raw material used for knapping are still present on site. These results contribute to better understanding the Palaeolithic of the Balkans and inform the population process in a region where little investigation has been previously conducted.

This work presents photo interpretation integration techniques of high resolution aerial photographs and satellite images. Through the use of this methodology, it is possible to identify Dolmens located in the Center Alentejo - Portugal, and recover archaeological information. From the observation of dolmens it was perceived the shape of these objects visualised in vertical images. The use of Remote Sensing techniques in conjunction with ArcGIS allowed to confirm and to know the interpretation keys of these monuments. This feature keys allow to identify and recognise sites already identified as well as new buildings.  

Arqueología de un asentamiento al aire libre del Neolítico antiguo andaluz de entre el VI y V milenios cal AC RESUMEN El denominado Cerro del Cercado, cuenta con un enorme potencial para el conocimiento de aspectos tales como la estructura de hábitat, modos de vida y bases económicas de las sociedades del Neolítico antiguo en la Alta Andalucía. En él se revela la existencia de una particular arquitectura interna, con disposiciones a base de bloques de piedra, agujeros y calzos de poste, así como estructuras negativas a modo de fosas y cubetas. La cultura material destaca por su riqueza y variedad, con cerámicas impresas, incisas y a la almagra, productos líticos basados en soportes laminares obtenidos por talla a presión, y elementos de adorno como elementos malacológicos, cuentas discoidales, así como brazaletes de piedra. Este tipo de emplazamientos arqueológicos al aire libre, permiten responder a problemáticas concretas sobre las primeras sociedades neolíticas en el sur de Iberia, algo difícil de realizar con las secuencias en cueva de la región. William M. Newton was Britain’s foremost expert on what he believed were the world’s oldest artworks: ‘Figure Stones’. Figure Stones – as Newton and others defined them - were lumps of flint naturally resembling birds, beasts and human body parts. Such accidents of nature were, he suggested, already seen as magical by early humans. Their primitive finders, the theory went, ‘animated’ them by applying simple scrapes and chips to turn them into sculptures.

Izvleček V članku predstavljamo poselitev Tabora pri Vrabčah v prazgodovini. Najstarejša poselitev sodi v 11. in 10. st. pr. n. št., mlajša faza poselitve, to je čas, ko je bilo zgrajeno obzidje v suhozidni tehniki, pa v 8./7. stol. pr. n. št. Analiza keramičnega gradiva je pokazala na razlike v lončarski tradiciji, kar odražajo tako različni lončarski recepti, tipi posod kot tehnike izdelave in žganja. Mineraloško-petrografske analize nakazujejo lokalno usmerjeno pridobivanje virov. Kljub omejenemu območju raziskave ugotavljamo, da so bile na Taboru prisotne številne živalske vrste. Na podlagi ostankov iz mlajše faze smo prepoznali aktivnosti, vezane na prehrambne navade takratnih prebivalcev gradišča. / This article examines the prehistoric hillfort of Tabor near Vrabče. The earliest settlement phase dates to the 11th and 10th century BC, while the later phase, during which the drystone wall was built, dates to the 8th/7th century BC. The analysis of the ceramic materials revealed differences in pottery traditions, reflected in various pottery recipes, vessel types, and forming and firing techniques. Mineralogical-petrographic analyses indicated locally orientated mining resources. Despite the limited area of archaeological excavations, evidence suggest the presence of numerous animal species in Tabor. Based on remains from the later phase, activities related to the dietary habits of the hillfort‘s inhabitants have been identified.

The discovery of a child burial in Brno-Slatina containing both complete and disarticulated animal remains represents a unique funerary practice with no direct analogies. The grave was located near a prominent limestone crag; it had been secondarily opened, and no grave goods were found. Based on radiocarbon dating, its chronology corresponds to the Late Eneolithic. In addition to anthropological, zooarchaeological, and taphonomic analyses, the find was assessed within the larger spatial context of the Morava River basin, where new, specific settlement patterns, diverse burial practices, and three distinct pottery styles (Jevišovice, Bošáca, and Globular Amphora) emerged. In a broader sense, these burial practices can be interpreted as a reflection of the growing presence of steppe populations who came into contact with indigenous Neolithic societies.

Chemical analyses of organic residues in fragments of pottery from the large site of Cahokia and surrounding smaller sites in Illinois reveal theobromine, caffeine, and ursolic acid, biomarkers for species of Ilex (holly) used to prepare the ritually important Black Drink. As recorded during the historic period, men consumed Black Drink in portions of the American Southeast for ritual purification. This first demonstrated discovery of biomarkers for Ilex occurs in beaker vessels dating between A.D. 1050 and 1250 from Cahokia, located far north of the known range of the holly species used to prepare Black Drink during historic times. The association of Ilex and beaker vessels indicates a sustained ritual consumption of a caffeine-laced drink made from the leaves of plants grown in the southern United States.

Le site néolithique de Tell Aswad, situé à 30 km à l'est-sud-est de Damas, a été découvert et sondé par H. de Contenson en 1972 et 1973. Le site a été fouillé par une équipe franco-syrienne de 2001 à 2006. Les trois phases du PPNB (Horizon PPNB ancien, PPNB moyen, PPNB récent) ont été mises en lumière dans quatorze niveaux archéologiques. Cet article présente une aire funéraire qui se rattache sans doute au début du PPNB récent. Deux groupes de sépultures, représentant deux états successifs, réunissent plus de cinquante individus inhumés selon diverses pratiques (sépultures individuelles, plurielles, primaires, secondaires, combinées). L'état initial de cette aire a été fondé par le dépôt de quatre crânes surmodelés.

During the Bronze Age (3000-1000 B.C.) in Crete, period of development of luxury craft productions, new shapes of stone vases, complex and original occurred in the workshops, implying an evolution of drilling techniques. The surface of archaeological stone vases and of conical bore cores contain the signature of the mechanisms of abrasion. But which type of abrasive, bit material and lubricant has been used by prehistoric craftsmen? In order to identify abrading techniques employed we have developed a drilling tribometer. The experimental reproduction of wear traces and their comparison with archaeological ones, permitted to reveal the use of an abrasive paste inside the tubular drill.

Istria's name is but one – albeit the most significant – inherited element of its Iron Age heritage, and stands as an expression of its identity. A small part of this distant history is showcased at this exhibition, which has opened to us yet another magical route through which to tour the land of the Histri and their heroic past. This exhibition, with the symbolic title The Heroic Age of the Histri, picks up on Kristina Mihovilić's work in creating the remarkable The Histri in Istria exhibition, staged in Pula in 2013, which aimed to underscore the indelible legacy of the millennial Histrian presence in Istria. Continuing on this work, this exhibition addresses the importance of presenting the Histrian culture outside of Istria and Croatia as a whole, nurturing and promoting our understanding of the millennial Histrian legacy.

Stone points are one of the key features used to define the African Middle Stone Age (MSA). Regional patterns in their shape and size through time have been thought to reflect inter-group interactions and networks of populations and are used to define cultural phases within the MSA. However, eastern Africa does not have distinctive and widely applied chrono-stratigraphic point variants that divide its MSA record, which is often described as being highly variable. This paper presents a metric and geometric morphometric analysis of eastern African MSA points and evaluates potential drivers of variation in them in relation to null models of isolation by distance, time and environment. Approximately half of the shape variance in our sample can be explained by spatial, temporal and environmental differences, as well as by size, indicating a degree of demographic continuity through sustained cultural transmission. A portion of the remaining variance likely represents stylistic differences between assemblages, which are often the subject of interest in archaeological studies. The highly variable nature of the eastern African MSA may reflect the region's refugial positioning within the continent, with point technology a flexible adaptive system that was dynamically employed across Africa ARTICLE HISTORY

Edición de la revista El Petroglifo que reafirma la militancia cultural del Grupo Cultural El Petroglifo. Publica reflexiones filosóficas y textos de autores locales, además de continuar con las publicaciones infantiles. Presenta los avances del proyecto de documentación arqueológica en el valle de Vigirima y los ecos de la recepción que la revista ha tenido en instituciones educativas. Se consolida aquí la revista como órgano de pensamiento crítico local.

Número de la revista cultural El Petroglifo que combina divulgación arqueológica con expresión artística. Se retoma el tema de los petroglifos de Vigirima e incluye fotografías, ilustraciones y ensayos interpretativos. Se publican poemas inéditos de Carlos Sánchez y se presenta el programa del Círculo para el nuevo año, reforzando su labor comunitaria. Una edición donde se conjugan ciencia, memoria y poesía.

Número inaugural de la revista del Círculo Cultural “El Petroglifo”, fundado en Guacara (Venezuela) en 1975. Contiene el manifiesto fundacional del grupo, la exposición de sus objetivos culturales y pedagógicos, y rinde homenaje al poeta Carlos Sánchez. Incluye también los primeros cuentos infantiles del Premio de Literatura Infantil, así como una crítica social desde la perspectiva rural. Documento clave para entender el origen de este movimiento cultural comunitario.

Commencé par le plus grand des hasards ou presque, à l'occasion d'un symbole solaire de nos ancêtres indoeuropéens se promenant dans un endroit incongru, je me suis trouvé embarqué dans un voyage inattendu au cours duquel j'ai visité une partie du pays de mes ancêtres, contraint par les vents et les courants de suivre des chemins qui m'ont mené au embouchures de fleuves inconnus de moi, débouchant sur des océans que je n'ai pas eu vraiment le coeur ni le temps d'explorer. Ce texte est un livre de bord de ce voyage. On y verra qu'il y a de la place pour tout le monde sur ces océans-là et que personne ne nous y attend, sauf ceux qui nous ont quittés depuis longtemps en nous laissant quelques gravures sur des pierres qui attendent que nous les déchiffrions.

The centenary of his death provides an opportunity to re-examine parts of the collection of archaeological objects collected from all over Ireland by Robert Day. This paper examines the nature and extent of his Bronze Age and Iron Age gold and silver objects. Some new insights on provenance are given. The dispersal of the collection after the 1913 auction is discussed and objects are traced to their present locations where possible.

The Roman Villa of Caddeddi, in the territory of Noto (Siracusa) is located on the south bank of the Tellaro river, about 3km from its mouth. The site, interpreted as a rural luxury residence dated to the mid-4th century CE, was first discovered in 1970 and intermittently investigated in the subsequent decades and mostly studied from the perspectives of the splendid mosaic floors there uncovered. The excavated structure accounts for just a portion of the complex, which is partially covered by a 19th century farmhouse. After a long period of neglect, the villa, mainly known in literature for its exquisite mosaic floors, has been recently restored and opened to the public and become subject of new studies in the context of interdisciplinary collaborative remote sensing project by the
