Medieval urban history

Francesco da Barberino is the author of one of the few female etiquette texts written in the Middle Ages. In this period, a number of texts on court etiquette had been written but the most of them were addressed to the male reader and only few of them were written specifically for women.

In his works, Francesco da Barberino shows the rules of court etiquette appropriate for a girl from a family of high social status the age of marriage. Thanks to his work, we have knowledge on which virtues were appreciated, what was allowed, and what type of conduct was not accepted by the society of the time.

In 1978, the newly created UNESCO World Heritage Site agency named twelve natural and cultural wonders to its first list; by December 2020, there were 1,121 monuments across 167 countries listed. The “Routes of Santiago: Camino Francés” (1993) (with the 2015 extension of “Routes of Northern Spain”) and “Routes of Santiago in France” (1998) were among the first trails listed as cultural (as opposed to natural) heritage sites. The heritage routes are actually collections of greater to lesser monuments (cathedrals to fountains) associated with medieval pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela. In an expansion of its understanding and protection of physical cultural sites, UNESCO established its Intangible Cultural Heritage [ICH] list in 2008 to safeguard and "maintain cultural diversity in the face of growing globalization.” Designated ICH elements must fulfill four features: they are traditional, contemporary and living at the same time; inclusive; representative; and community-based. There is growing support to have elements of the Camino de Santiago included on this official list. The pilgrimage as an event may reside in specific places or trails, but its intangible cultural heritage carries beyond its routes. Medieval as well as modern pilgrims have carried elements of intangible cultural heritage home with them, wherever that home may be. The transmission and maintenance of ICH elements of the Camino may well reside in communities far beyond the physical routes. This chapter focuses on the ICH elements of medieval stories, proverbs, songs, and poems of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.

The report looks into the traces of the presence of the Teutonic Order in the Siponto area, focusing, in the introduction, on the delicate phase of transfer of assets, in the mid-thirteenth century, from the ancient city of Siponto, almost at sunset, to the nearby site of San Leonardo. The analysis of the few certain sources and of a first excavation campaign, limited to a corner of the ancient city, just before its end, cannot clarify the many aspects still obscure but at least manages to outline a context; the one in which the decision was taken to abandon an urban reality, still vital and pulsating, to build, in its neighboring countryside, a new reality closer to the expansion strategies of the Order. The architectural works carried out in San Leonardo in the great refoundation site in 1327, complete with insignia and symbols, together with the evocative forms of overseas military settlements, respond more, than to real strategic needs of defense of the site, to a design of proselytism implemented by the Order to try to reverse the ongoing process of marginalization of Mediterranean settlements. The archaeological stratigraphy affected both the convent area and the church. But it is the latter, in particular, that returned some traces of that rethinking program of the most delicate area of the liturgical space, configuring a sort of new “Teutonic” transept.

This article analyzes the discourses and judicial procedures surrounding one case of spousal homicide in late medieval Castile. The homicide in question occurred in the city of Toledo in 1496, when the confectioner Francisco Machano stabbed his wife, Juana Gomez, following accusations of adultery. Focusing on a set of witness testimonies produced in the aftermath of Juana's death, we examine how an exculpatory narrative was constructed as part of the perpetrator’s efforts to evade prosecution and support a petition for a royal pardon. This examination illustrates how Castilian ideas about adultery, reputation, and female insubordination could be mobilized in the defense strategies of husbands charged with killing their wives. Moreover, our analysis reveals a series of normative views that legitimized adultery-related femicide through the notion of “just cause.” Although such views defied the principles outlined by royal laws, testimonies invoking “just cause” were still significant in judicial procedures. Among other things, they could help perpetrators shape public opinion to convince or pressure their victim’s relatives to grant forgiveness, which was often a prerequisite for an official royal pardon. Members of the local community could thus influence this dynamic by offering testimonies that commented on acts of violence, thereby defining and redefining “just cause” for homicide.

The article deals with castles from 11.- 12th century in Moravia. Most part of them eas founded about the middle of the 11th century after the conquest of Moravia  by Přemyslids about 1029. They fulfilled administrative and defensive functions, and were also centers for collecting princely taxes. We can distinguish three categories of these seats. Il saggio prende avvio dalla scoperta di un importante fondo pergamenaceo nell'archivio storico comunale di San Maurizio Canavese. Alcune pergamene gettano luce su alcune dinamiche relative alla comunità, in particolare il forte ascendente signorile sull'elezione della credenza della comunità nel 1296 e, successivamente,  sul forte ascendente che la credenza del Comune di Ciriè ha sulla nomina dei funzionari della credenza di San Maurizio. Summary

In the decades between the 12th and 13th centuries, many cities in central and northern Italy experienced conflicts involving episcopal authorities and municipal magistracies. The management of justice in the city and in the lands of the contado was at the centre of these disputes. At stake were not only important economic revenues but, above all, the auctoritas and potestas exercised over men. These conflicts accelerated significantly after the Peace of Constance. Parma was no exception: its political vicissitudes were marked by a dispute that pitted episcopal authorities and municipal magistrates against each other between 1192 and 1221. At the centre of the volume is a figure who played a fundamental role not only in the course of the conflict, but also in the development of a multiplicity of symbolic languages in the city's political communication and collective memory: the mayor of Pavia, Torello da Strada. Made famous by a novel by Boccaccio, themiles was at the origin of a series of important institutional processes that had significant repercussions for the construction of thecivic identity. The history of Parma at the height of the Middle Ages developed, in fact, under the sign of the bull.

coinvolti autorità episcopale e magistrature comunali. La gestione
della giustizia in città e nelle terre del contado era al centro di
tali contese. In gioco non c’erano solo importanti entrate economiche
ma, soprattutto, l’auctoritas e la potestas esercitate sugli
uomini. Questi conflitti ebbero un’accelerazione significativa
dopo la Pace di Costanza. Parma non fa eccezione: la sua vicenda
politica fu segnata da una contesa che vide contrapposti autorità episcopale
e magistrature comunali tra il 1192 e il 1221. Al centro del
volume vi è, in particolare, una figura. che ebbe un ruolo fondamentale
non solo nel corso del conflitto, ma anche nello sviluppo
di una molteplicità di linguaggi simbolici della comunicazione
politica cittadina e della memoria collettiva: il podestà pavese
Torello da Strada. Reso celebre da una novella del Boccaccio, il
miles fu all’origine di una serie di importanti processi istituzionali
che ebbero ricadute significative per la costruzione dell’identità
civica. La storia di Parma nel pieno Medioevo si sviluppò, infatti,

Frederick II: from mythomoteur to mythophantom. Aboout identity, mythologization, nationalism and regionalism

In many areas, whether it be places, regions or countries, there is a need to identify with something that has happened in the past. In this way people distinguish themselves from other countries, peoples and regions. Important people and events in the past are often used as legitimation for nationalist sentiments. This is where mythologization is in wait. This article, based on historiographical research, deals with mythologization around the person of Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (1194-1250) in Italy and Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries. The question here is to what extent Frederick II is a mythomoteur, someone who generates myths, from which an ethnic group derives its right to exist. This can be done by means of identification in a positive way by emphasizing the good in him and by worshiping him as a person (Dr. Jekyll) or in a negative way, by turning away from him or by vilifying him (Mr. Hyde). Both aspects can contribute to strengthening identity and nationalism.
On the basis of three controversies (Licinio/Brando vs. Russo, Sybel vs Ficker and Rader vs. Houben), the role of Frederick II in the discussion on identity and nationalism in Italy and Germany is examined. We look at the appreciation and merits of the person, which role he played in the process of state and nation building in Italy and Germany and whether he can be considered an Italian or a German. The conclusion is that Frederick II does not meet the characteristics of a mythomoteur. This concept requires an ethnic component that is virtually absent in Frederick II. There is, however, Frederick II as a mythophantom: an imagined phenomenon that is not based on historical facts and does not aim to bind ethnic groups, but which can be used to distinguish oneself from others in economic, political, social, cultural and scientific terms and thus allowing for identification.

Manfredo Tafuri once said of Venice that this singular maritime city can be seen as the place where antitheses have been removed, where dialectics has no function, in which there is no contradiction between tradition and innovation, development and memory, continuity and renewal, sacred and profane. This insight can help us to enter into the project on the Serenissima jointly drawn and authored by Mosetti and Rakowitz.

Zahvaljujući kakvojtakvoj zaštiti koju su im pružali viteški redovi, hodočasnici su mogli slobodno izvršavati svoje pobožnosti sve do 1187., a nakon što je te godine Jeruzalem ponovno pao u ruke Arapa, stanje se znatno otežalo. Kad je izgubljen Akon 1291. godine, hodočasnici su neko vrijeme bili nepoželjni, ali protekom vremena više nisu promatrani kao neprijatelji, jer se uočila materijalna korist od njihovog dolaženja i boravka u različitim palestinskim mjestima. Kao sredstvo putovanja, brodski, odnosno morski prijevoz je definitivno prevladao već od 12. stoljeća, a upravo u tom vremenu je porasla moć pomorskih republika od Đenove do Mletaka. Mlečani su naposljetku gotovo posve istisnuli ostale suparnike u tom unosnom poslu, a za to postignuće bilo je ključno nekoliko čimbenika. Kao prvo imali su čvrstu pomorsku infrastrukturu potrebnu za sigurno prevoženje hodočasnika. Počevši od Mletaka, gospodarili su utvrđenim gradovima duž cijele istočne obale Jadrana, Jonskog mora te juga Egeja, te su jedinstvom vlasti osiguravali putnike i njihovu imovinu. 4 Nadalje, brodovi su im bili solidno građeni i s vremenom su poboljšavani u cilju udobnosti. I kao treće, većim dijelom 15. i 16. stoljeća mletačko-egipatski, odnosno mletačko-turski odnosi bili su podnošljivi za hodočasnike, i tek je porast osmanlijske agresivnosti, kako državne tako i njihovih vazala, počeo općenito odvraćati zapadne kršćane, pa tako i Nijemce, od hodočašćenja u Svetu Zemlju. Osim toga, pad interesa kod Nijemaca izravno je bio potaknut i razmahom reformacije, iako su i Lutherovi sljedbenici još dugo vremena odlazili u Jeruzalem. 5 Na području hrvatskih krajeva hodočašćenje i hodočasnici prema Jeruzalemu imali su gotovo jednaku razvojnu putanju kao i u ostalim europskim zemljama. The staple right required merchants arriving from outside the town to offer their wares for sale there, giving the local merchants a head start in purchasing such goods over other merchants in the country. The first staple right for eastern routes appeared in the second half of the fourteenth century. Braşov gave a staple right in 1369 from Louis I-in respect of broadcloth. Sigismund extended the privilege in 1395: foreign merchants had to lay all kind of goods in Braşov and sell or exchange them. The kings never granted Sibiu a staple right in the classic sense, but the privileges (1378, 1384, 1413) they did grant could only be exercised if a staple right was set up and operated.

The Küçükyalı ArkeoPark is an urban archaeology project located on the Asian side of Istanbul’s Greater Municipality. Although the ArkeoPark covers a relatively medium-sized area corresponding to some 4,500/5,000 sq. m, it represents the largest surviving archaeological area on the Asian side of Istanbul. Investigations at the site and research currently support identification of the remains with the Middle Byzantine period monastic complex built by patriarch Ignatios between 867 and 877 CE. Ongoing excavations are bringing to light the second half of the ninth-century ecclesiastical building that has survived above a cistern, as well as traces of settlement spanning the first half of the fourteenth century. The Küçükyalı ArkeoPark is a project focusing on archaeological inquiry as well as on public engagement. Within the scope of its public engagement activities, a specific element will be presented here: work carried out within the EU LIMEN project aimed at devising more sustainable visitor activities for the site. A suburban cultural route linking the site with the nearby archipelago of the Princes’ Islands and the establishment of a bike route represent the focus of this contribution.

Durante los siglos XII y XIII la Iglesia romana experimentó un doble proceso de consolidación institucional y territorial. La extensión de la red parroquial permitió la penetración del cristianismo en las comunidades locales, convirtiéndose la parroquia no solo en la piedra angular de la religiosidad bajomedieval, sino también en el centro de la vida comunitaria. De este modo, cualquier estudio sobre la parroquia lateranense no puede omitir la interacción y articulación de sus distintos componentes: los fieles adscriptos a su jurisdicción, los clérigos que las servían y las dotaciones materiales que permitían su existencia. El trabajo que aquí presentamos aborda algunas problemáticas que subyacen en las dos últimas esferas mencionadas. Nos interesa reflexionar sobre la coexistencia entre, por un lado, el correcto usufructo de los beneficios eclesiásticos con su correspondiente ejercicio de los oficios sacerdotales y por otro, el desempeño de actividades incompatibles con la condición clerical y el mal uso del patrimonio asociado al ministerium ecclesiae. Partimos de las concepciones dominantes en la jerarquía eclesiástica
sobre dichas cuestiones, para luego contrastarlas con la realidad de
la vida parroquial en la diócesis de Segovia a mediados del siglo XV. De forma más general, el trabajo forma parte del estudio de las visitas pastorales como instrumentos de modelación y control del gobierno episcopal. El corpus documental en el que se sustentan nuestras apreciaciones se compone de constituciones sinodales, instrucciones extraídas de los manuales para confesores y los resultados de la visita pastoral girada en la diócesis de Segovia durante 1446-1447.

Talk given at the twelth annual conference of the Mühlhäuser Arbeitskreis für Reichsstadtgeschichte, entitled "Fremde in der Reichsstadt".
In this talk I use examples from late medieval Regensburg to examine which effects the threat of war - in my case the so-called "Town War" of  1387-1389 - had on the perception of strangers in a free town. Using the so-called "Regenburg Yellow Book", a miscellaneous town book kept by the town scribe, I study how the Regensburg councillors dealt with the strangers who entered their city during the Town War and how they sought to integrate, expel or at least control them.

In the first part of the article the author examines the factors that influenced the significant increase in the number of private documents written by notaries from the second half of the thirteenth until the end of the fifteenth century in all communal centres on the Eastern Adriatic coast – from Poreč to Kotor. In contrast to the period from the ninth to the beginning of the thirteenth century, when private documents were recorded exclusively for individuals belonging to the elite layers of Eastern Adriatic urban societies, the period of the last decades of the High Middle Ages and the entire period of the Late Middle Ages was characterised by continuous growth in the number of private documents for both male and female, poor and rich, citizens and inhabitants, the domicile population and foreigners. Kako bi se sagledali i razumijeli posjedi i imovina isusovaca u Rijeci, potrebno je vratiti se unatrag do vremena prije njihova dolaska u Rijeku i prve godine njihove prisutnosti ondje. Inicijator dolaska isusovaca u Rijeku bio je riječki gradski magistrat koji je 5. ožujka 1623. godine poslao generalu reda Vitelleschiju molbu da se isusovci nasele u Rijeci kako bi ondje preuzeli na sebe školu, jer su dugo vremena imali problema s učiteljima. Ta inicijativa naišla je na podršku senjsko-modruškoga biskupa Ivana Agatića (rodom Riječanina) te cara Ferdinanda II., jednoga od najgorljivijih nositelja protureformacije u srednjoj Europi. 2 Potonji podržava isusovce u njihovu misijskom i odgojno-obrazovnom radu, u čemu vidi sredstvo za sprečavanje širenja protestantizma te im za potrebe budućega kolegija već 1625. godine prepušta prihode od polovice riječke desetine koji mu pripadaju. 3 Potpora Habsburgovaca djelovanju Družbe Isusove očituje se možda ponajbolje u podatku da su isusovci na području Kuće Austrije do sredine 17. stoljeća otvorili čak 14 kolegija. 4 Uz zajamčenu financijsku podršku Ferdinanda II., koja je već i prije dolaska isusovaca u Rijeku osigurala dio sredstava za rad, gradski im je magistrat zaključkom Velikoga i Maloga vijeća od 16. kolovoza 1627. godine osigu-1 Postoje sumnje da se dio gradiva riječkih isusovaca nalazi u još dvije baštinske ustanove u Republici Hrvatskoj. Međutim, o tome bez potvrde na ovome mjestu nećemo pisati. 2

This paper aims to understand and analyze the origins of the of Vila Nova de Monsarros, from its first evocations in medieval documents until the mid-15th century. We will try, through the analysis of several medieval sources, to understand the growth of this rural population and, consequently, the installation of other settlements that would eventually develop around Vila Nova de Monsarros. The history of this rural community crosses with the monastery of S. Vicente da Vacariça and, through the donation made by Count D. Raimundo in 1094, with the history of the Diocese of Coimbra. This settlement would be coutada to the Coimbra’s Chapter, receiving a collective charter in 1250 from
bishop D. Egas Fafes. We will finish our study with the analysis of the Livro dos Pregos do Cabido da Sé de Coimbra, once belonging to the chapter’s scriptorium, in order to analyse in great detail the economic relations of the population of Vila Nova de Monsarros with the Chapter of the Cathedral of Coimbra in the middle of the 15th century.

For the first time, an article-length comparison is made between two noblemen of the Low Countries, based on their own writings (memoirs or travel relations) and on external biographical and contextual data. The study reveals their contrasted experiences as men-at-arms, aligned with the chronology of Burgundian state-formation and with the fate of their lineages.

According to legend Jews first visited Cornwall with the Phoenicians about the time of King Solomon in search of tin and lead. Derbyshire has a rich history of lead mining, and “……many Jews came in search of this rich deposit.”  The involvement of Jews in tin mining is suggested by the use of the name ‘Jews Houses’ for smelting ovens. 

There are also many myths concerning the Ten Lost Tribes arriving in Britain. They are only myths. However, the Ten Lost Tribes played their part in the readmission of the Jews in 1656. There are also many legends of the Irish (and Scots) being descended from Jews. Some persons have made much play of the Hebrew words ‘Brit Ish’ (which can be translated as ‘man of the covenant’).

There is no evidence of a Jewish presence in Derbyshire Roman Britain. At the most it is probable that there were a few Jewish soldiers and some traders. The merchants may have formed small communities in a few places, with the strongest possibility being near seaports.

The existence of Jews in Derby in Mediaeval England is shown by the calling of “Ursell of Derby”  to the making of a "certain starr"  in 1277.

During the 18th century, Jewish pedlars were known to "Roam the countryside". There existence in Chesterfield is known as early as 1753 when Myas Jacob, Jeweller, advertised from the Angel Inn.

The Jews of necessity kept themselves distinct and apart from the general community. Their relations with the natives were not always friendly, but on the whole, they lived an entirely different life.

This research, which will serve as the foundation for a new documentary on the enduring past, present, and future of the Jewish community in Derby, is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Jewish people. It delves into the reasons, circumstances, and the remarkable journey of Jewish settlement in Derby. Despite the absence of physical Jewish landmarks, Derby is home to a vibrant Jewish community that cherishes its historical roots and fosters an enduring interest in Jewish life, even among non-Jewish individuals like myself.

As the author of this research, I bring a unique perspective, having lived in Derbyshire all my life. I vividly recall my school days, where religious education and visits to synagogues and mosques were part of our curriculum. Derby has been a magnet for migrants for centuries, drawn by its diverse economic, social, and educational opportunities.

Derby has a strong economy, especially in the manufacturing, engineering, and technology sectors. It is home to major employers like Rolls-Royce, Bombardier, and Toyota. These industries attract skilled workers from abroad, particularly engineers and technicians.

The University of Derby, a beacon of higher education, draws a diverse range of international students, offering courses in business, healthcare, and engineering.

Recently, Derby has been a dispersal area for asylum seekers in the UK. Refugees fleeing conflict, persecution, or other crises in their home countries may be resettled in Derby through government programs. Derby has been a settlement for many migrant communities, providing familiarity and support for new migrants.

Cairo­ has­ seldom­ experienced­ war­ during ­its ­thousand­ years ­of ­history.­ The assault­ launched­ in­ the ­spring­ of­ 1389­ by­ rebel­ emirs­ from­Syria­ is ­among ­the­ few ­military ­events ­that ­directly­ affected­ the­ Egyptian­ capital.­ It­ compelled Sultan­ al‐Ẓāhir ­Barqūq ­to­ abandon­ the­ throne ­but­ caused­ only­ sporadic fighting­ and ­limited­ destruction.­ However,­ the­ imminence ­of­ war ­in­ the­ spring­ of­ 1389 ­revealed ­Cairo’s­ spatial­ structures,­ institutions­ and­ daily ­life­ at­ the very­ moment­ the­ ruling­ elite­ tried­ to­ organize­ the­ city’s­ defense­ and­ to­ secure­ the­ support­ of­ its­ inhabitants.­ As­ a­ direct­ witness­ to­ the­ events,­ the­ notary Ibn­ al‐Furāt­ (1335–1405)­ provides­ a­ narrative­ that­ sheds­ new­ light­ on­ the city’s­ urban­ spaces­ and­ society­ at­ a­ time­ when­ Cairo­ was­ feverishly preparing­ itself­ for­ the­ war.

[EN] Mestre Francisco, a Franciscan, later a Servite, and confessor of Kings João I and Duarte of Portugal, is known to historiography almost exclusively by the reference to a sermon he preached in the work Leal Conselheiro. All other aspects of his activity were completely unknown, which earned him the designation of ignored preacher. Through documents identified by António Domingos de Sousa Costa, OFM, in the Vatican Apostolic Archives, as well as other unpublished documentation preserved in Portuguese and foreign archives, we have been able to reconstruct the main elements of the biography of Mestre Francisco, director of the conscience of two monarchs, Portuguese diplomatic agent in Rome and renowned preacher of the first half of the 15th century.

At the end of the Middle Ages, the city of Bardejov owned numerous vineyards in the TokajHegyalja region of Zemplén County. Their most valuable vineyard was purchased in early 1486 for 1,000 gold florins from the noble Kispalugyai family, originating from Liptov. However, later that same year, George Schwarz, who would subsequently become a member of the Košice city council, claimed preemption rights to the vineyard and challenged the city’s ownership. This resulted in a decade-long legal battle before secular and ecclesiastical courts: the first phase of the dispute unfolded before the palatine, the second under the authority of Angelo Pecchinoli, a papal legate, and the final phase before papally delegated judges. During these years, the lawsuit became one of the most significant events in the history of Bardejov. As a result, an excellent collection of sources related to the case has been preserved in the Bardejov archives, comprising more than 80 charters and other documents that detail the developments of the matter. Among these sources of varied types, the expense ledger in which the city meticulously recorded its expenditures for the case is particularly notable. This study
examines the history of the lawsuit and the contents of the expense ledger.

Sažetak: U radu se analizira poslovni pothvat graditelja Ivana Antunova (prve vijesti 1351., preminuo 1392.), sina doseljenika iz francuskoga grada Vienne i jednog od vodećih graditelja i klesara svoga doba na dubrovačkom području. Majstor Ivan sagradio je uglovnicu za imućnog trgovca Stojka Stanislavića na ulici Prijeki, središnjoj komunikaciji seksterija Sv. Nikole, duž koje se u posljednjoj četvrtini 14. stoljeća grade reprezentativne kuće imućnih građana. Stanislavićeva kuća nije sačuvana, no izvori omogućuju njezinu ubikaciju, rekonstrukciju dekoracije pročelja, rasporeda prostorija i drvene opreme unutrašnjosti koju je izradio tesar Sergol Miroslavić.
