Для широкого круга исследователей мифология абазин — одного из коренных народов Кавказа — остаётся во многом terra incognita. Данная статья является первой частью цикла работ по её изучению в глобальной перспективе и широком историческом контексте. Анализ материалов по более чем тысяче традиций Старого и Нового Света позволил проследить дистрибуцию мотива «Чья кровь слаще?», который относится к числу этиологических представлений и зафиксирован у абазин по крайней мере трижды. Обладая разорванным ареалом распространения, он встречается в Евразии на территории между Ирландией и Маньчжурией, а также в Западном полушарии у индейцев Аляски, Калифорнии, Великих Озёр и нескольких других районов. Собранные данные свидетельствуют в пользу того, что в северо-восточных частях Старого Света этот мотив был известен уже в эпоху первоначального заселения Америки, то есть его относительный возраст может составлять около 14–16 тыс. лет. На Кавказ он проник, скорее всего, в результате культурных и миграционных импульсов из Центральной Азии, которые прослеживаются как минимум с IX–VIII вв. до н. э. и приобретают особенно интенсивный характер начиная с эпохи Великого переселения народов. Одна из абазинских версий обнаруживает близкое соответствие в «Сказаниях о пророках» ар-Рабгузи (1311) и связана своим происхождением с устной и письменной мусульманской традицией, включившей в себя часть доисламских тюркских верований. Другой вариант, записанный у абазин и повествующий о том, как дракон (абльагӀва) хотел найти вкуснейшую кровь, является потенциально более ранним и отличается на мировом фоне высокой степенью своеобразия.

Dopo l’edizione parziale del volgarizzamento A delle Meditationes vitae Christi sulla base del MS. Riccardiano 1346 (pubblicata in questa stessa rivista nel fascicolo XXVII-XXVIII, 2022-2023), il secondo e ultimo saggio della serie fornisce uno studio filologico e storico-culturale del testo e del manoscritto che lo contiene, con un’analisi approfondita del rapporto con la tradizione latina. L’articolo offre anche un’analisi linguistica e alcune note di commento, con particolare attenzione agli aspetti lessicali, stilistici e traduttologici.

Halakhah and Aggadah: It has been over one hundred years since Hayim Nahman Bialik challenged the notion that these two concepts are opposites, and yet a dichotomous understanding still pervades scholarly discussion. In his 1916 essay, Bialik likened the relationship of halakhah and aggadah to that of "ice and water," characterizing their intimacy as "that of speech to thought and emotion, or of action and sensible form to speech." 1 His proposal that halakhah and aggadah are inseparable aspects of Jewish culture and imagination reverberates in critical scholarship, for example, in the oft-quoted statement of Professor Yaakov Sussmann that "halakha and aggada are two sides of the same coin." 2 But the implications of this insight have yet to fully penetrate, even among those scholars who are at the forefront of challenging the dichotomy. In this essay, I seek to extricate the concept of aggadah from the tight grip of the halakhah-aggadah conceptual binary. Revisiting two oft-cited talmudic narratives that center on the status of aggadah, 3 I demonstrate how the imposition of the halakhah-aggadah binary on talmudic materials is an anachronism that impedes contextual analysis. Reading these stories in the cultural context of their composition opens up new insights into the meaning of "aggadah" for the storytellers of the Talmud and for the Talmud's earliest audiences.

Grußwort der Priörin von Kloster Preetz Es ist mir eine große Freude und Ehre, den nun dritten Band der 2022 ins Leben gerufenen Buchreihe Forschungen zu Kloster und Stift Preetz präsentieren zu können. Das hier vorliegende Buch, das sich Kloster Preetz im Mittelalter widmet, gibt der Leserschaft einen Überblick über die vielfältige Geschichte des Klosters, sein beachtliches Inventar und seine Kultur. Der Fokus des Bandes liegt auf der sakralen Baukunst und den historischen Kunstschätzen des Klosters. Singuläre Traditionen, die sich in Teilen bis heute bewahrt haben, machen Kloster Preetz zu einem einzigartigen Denkmal -nicht nur in der Region, sondern weit darüber hinaus. Diese Veröffentlichung ist das Ergebnis einer dreitägigen Tagung, die im September 2023 in Preetz stattfand. Als Tagungsraum diente die Klosterkirche. Welch idealer Ort, um sich wissenschaftlich mit diesem Gebäude, dem Herz des Klosters, und seinem Inventar zu beschäftigen! Forschung kann gar nicht anschaulicher vermittelt werden! Die Tagung war ein voller Erfolg. Zahlreiche Besucherinnen und Besucher sowie Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus fast ganz Deutschland von Kiel im Norden bis Würzburg und Leonberg im Süden, von Berlin und Halle im Osten bis Düsseldorf und Eschweiler im Westen sowie aus den USA nahmen teil und sorgten für rege Diskussionen sowie neue Denkanstöße. Die Beiträge bestätigen das Bild eines Klosters, das ein bedeutendes Zentrum des Wissens, des Glaubens und der Künste im norddeutschen Raum war. Es spielte eine entscheidende Rolle in der Gestaltung der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft der Region, schließlich machte es im Zuge seiner Gründung das einst unbesiedelte Land südlich von Kiel bis an die Ostsee urbar und für Siedler erst interessant. Als geistliches Zentrum weiblicher Religiosität prägte es den holsteinischen Raum und darüber hinaus. Die Zeugnisse sind unübersehbar und werden in den Aufsätzen dieses Bandes vielschichtig beleuchtet. Dafür bin ich als Priörin des Klosters überaus dankbar und freue mich über den regen Zuspruch durch Forschende aus den unterschiedlichsten Disziplinen. Eine solche Tagung wäre ohne zahlreiche tatkräftige Menschen nicht möglich. Dazu zählen auch die im Hintergrund Verborgenen: die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter des Adeligen Klosters Preetz sowie die vielen Helferinnen und Helfer der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. Mein besonderer Dank geht an Prof. Dr. Klaus Gereon Beuckers, der vor einigen Jahren mit der Idee auf mich zukam, diese Mittelaltertagung und eine im Jahr darauf stattfindende Tagung zur Geschichte von Preetz nach der Reformation zu veranstalten. The title of this brief article quite clearly illustrates its aims and evident limitations. In principle, a search for a Greek basis of the misogynist content of Andreas Capellanus's De amore is likely to lead researchers to focus on analysis of the sources -Greek sources, of course. However, there is no doubt that Ovid, the most frequently quoted ancient author, in this case the structural source, above all his Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris and Heroides, which is quite logical in light of the remarkable presence and influence of Ovid's works throughout that time. There was also a good knowledge of the works of Cicero, Virgil, Horace and Juvenal. However, other classical authors, even the Greeks -those who were known then-, were undoubtedly read in the schools, but the knowledge of their works was certainly superficial. Furthermore, given the scholastic method followed in De amore, it would be absurd not to consider the use of many quotations that appeared in the Compendia and in handbooks of religious instruction 3 . Therefore, with the help of this evident captatio benevolentiae, need I apologize for not being able to speak of any unquestionable "route of transmission"? Yes, although this qualification only refers to the "route of transmission" and not with the Greek basis upon which an entire corpus of misogynist theory is built. Indeed, the aim of this article is precisely to illustrate this. This is a truly significant theme, since too often reference is made to the Jewish and the Christian origin of Western misogyny, while the Greek inheritance, which is also remarkable and no less injurious, is systematically ignored 4 . Something essential still remains to be decided, that is, to elucidate whether there is a sure path that, avoiding useless digressions, led us directly towards the nucleus or heart of all the prejudices against women, or whether I should begin instead by examining an extensive list of presumed aspects of femininity -in keeing with a centuries-old tradition-which, as will be pointed out later on, will remind us of the long list of slanders in that well-known iambus by Semonides in his famous iambus.

One of the potential attractions of the Arthurian story lies in its historical roots. Chris Brooks and Inga Bryden suggested that "[t]he enduring English cultural fascination with Arthur can be located in a process of myth-making whereby medieval Arthurian literature is reinvented as part of a historicist impulse" (247). Perhaps spurred by this "historicist impulse," Kazuo Ishiguro set his recent novel The Buried Giant in a post-Arthurian era, depicting an apparently peaceful coexistence between the Britons and the Saxons and as well as forebodings of their future. While confessing, "To be honest, I don't know very much about the Arthurian Legends," Ishiguro reveals his interest in "a quasi-historical Arthur" who, "for maybe a generation or two, managed to impose a kind of a peace and stability." He was able to approach this side of the militaristic Arthur, "perhaps because the history there was so murky," indicating that the appeal of Arthurian material stems from its elusive historicity. In other words, this "murky," ostensibly peaceful period was so inspiring that it can creatively be imagined. 2 Ishiguro's contemporary reworking of the legend embodies a microcosm of how the Arthurian narrative has developed over time. Most of the grand narrative has evolved by exploring some untouched space, producing various spin-offs, such as sequels, prequels, or side stories. In this regard, Ishiguro's treatment of the mythical/peaceful setting is intriguing given that it certainly follows an important genealogy of the medieval Arthurian narrative, which is a tension between the two following modes: chronicle and romance. Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae (c. 1138) is regarded as the genesis of the "chronicle" tradition (Galfridian, or the Brut tradition). This groundbreaking historical work was devoted to portraying an unbroken line of British rulers over centuries of insular conflicts and military battles. Based on the surviving sources, which constitute only a small part of the originally produced testimonies, one may be tempted to conclude that St. Stephen was identified as the first king of Hungary/Hungarians in the early 12th century. This happened, on the one hand, as a result of an error in the reading of the phrase (“pii regis” > “primi regis”) when the transumpt of the Pannonhalma foundation document was drawn up, on the other hand, whether it was influenced by an over-interpretation of a notation known from Pope Urban II’s letter addres- sed to King Coloman of Hungary in 1096, or due to the recognition of St. Stephen by the then-reigning king in his political agenda as a point of reference. These factors may have fostered the appearance of the motif of the first king in the thenstablished Legend of King St. Stephen, whose authorship is attributed to Hartvik, or the Legend of Prince St. Emeric. Pope Innocent III’s recommendation in the early 13th century that the legend of King St. Stephen, identified by scholars as a hagiography written by Hartvik, be read in churches is considered important for the spread of the motif of the first king. It affected not only the content of works of a historiographical nature, such as the chronicles of Thomas Archdeacon of Split and Martin of Opava, but also the texts of sermons preached in churches. Thus, the motif of the first, let’s add, canonized king could have been widely propagated by this means, especially in a situation where at the beginning of the same century in Hungarian chronicles as the ancestor of a dynasty described as “holy kings and princes” appeared the figure of Attila, not infrequently referred to at the time by the term “flagellum Dei”, bearing the royal title. Surviving testimonies from the 13th century reveal that part of the Hungarian elite regarded this figure with a clear distance, seeing a counterbalance to him in the person of King St. Stephen. Probably in the case of some sources, one must also reckon with the fact that the mention of St. Stephen as the first king of Hungary/Hungarians occurred to some extent naturally, given that in the meantime several coronations of successive rulers took place in Hungary. In the case of the spread of the motif of the first king of Hungary/Hungarians in the late medieval period, the overwhelming influence on the historiography of the Chronicle of Popes and Emperors by Martin of Opava is gripping, but one must also reckon with the influence of the texts of the legend and sermons dedicated to King St. Stephen, among others.

English figurai and narrative representations of penance are assessed for their rhetorical function in the teaching of penance and their intended influence, as representational modes, upon lay understandings of penitential theory. Central to the argument is the view that the anatomised or schematic figurai res functions in Middle English works of religious instruction as a paradigmatic memory image which both structures the text and works to "move" the reader's affoetus towards a more pious disposition. Culturally and ideologically homologous with the distinctio and figurai res (generally drawn from Scripture), the paradigmatic memory image performs a vital bridging role between the understanding of doctrine and its realization in practical terms. Furthermore, the use of such schematic imagery contributes towards the integration of penance with other elements of doctrine such as the gifts of the Holy Spirit, Pater noster, and seven vices and virtues. Tie remedial role of penance as a dynamic mechanism to extirpate vice is made more explicit and efficacious by the sophistication and sensitivity to audience needs with which such integrated materials were compiled. The use of the exemplim i.e. exemplary narrative in the representation of penance is considered for its mnemonic utility in moving the af foetus. However, unlike the schematic image, the use of the exemplum for the teaching of penance requires the addition of a didactic moralisation to ensure that the audience does not misinterpret the narrative. A variety of methods for the employment of moralisations is identified, and their usefulness, in terms of doctrinal consistency and possible audience responses, is assessed. Resumen La intención de este artículo es caracterizar las Novelas de Pedro de Salazar (ca. 1560-1565), recientemente publicadas, como un regimiento de príncipes. Para ello, después de contextualizar la colección de novelas en la tradición medieval, se analizan las diversas estrategias con que el autor, desde su perspectiva de historiador, pretende dignificar un género de escritura desprestigiado en ese momento. La más importante de estas técnicas consiste en dedicar el conjunto al propio Felipe II, además de proponer como protagonista del marco narrativo al rey godo Ervigio y conformar muchos de los relatos con argumentos propios de la ficción bizantina. Finalmente se establecen las relaciones existentes entre este programa literario y la imprenta, las bibliotecas nobiliarias y hábitos lectores en la España del Siglo de Oro, en orden a definir el estatuto de la ficción frente a otros géneros literarios.

Summary

In the decades between the 12th and 13th centuries, many cities in central and northern Italy experienced conflicts involving episcopal authorities and municipal magistracies. The management of justice in the city and in the lands of the contado was at the centre of these disputes. At stake were not only important economic revenues but, above all, the auctoritas and potestas exercised over men. These conflicts accelerated significantly after the Peace of Constance. Parma was no exception: its political vicissitudes were marked by a dispute that pitted episcopal authorities and municipal magistrates against each other between 1192 and 1221. At the centre of the volume is a figure who played a fundamental role not only in the course of the conflict, but also in the development of a multiplicity of symbolic languages in the city's political communication and collective memory: the mayor of Pavia, Torello da Strada. Made famous by a novel by Boccaccio, themiles was at the origin of a series of important institutional processes that had significant repercussions for the construction of thecivic identity. The history of Parma at the height of the Middle Ages developed, in fact, under the sign of the bull.

della giustizia in città e nelle terre del contado era al centro di
tali contese. In gioco non c’erano solo importanti entrate economiche
ma, soprattutto, l’auctoritas e la potestas esercitate sugli
uomini. Questi conflitti ebbero un’accelerazione significativa
dopo la Pace di Costanza. Parma non fa eccezione: la sua vicenda
politica fu segnata da una contesa che vide contrapposti autorità episcopale
e magistrature comunali tra il 1192 e il 1221. Al centro del
volume vi è, in particolare, una figura. che ebbe un ruolo fondamentale
non solo nel corso del conflitto, ma anche nello sviluppo
di una molteplicità di linguaggi simbolici della comunicazione
politica cittadina e della memoria collettiva: il podestà pavese
Torello da Strada. Reso celebre da una novella del Boccaccio, il
miles fu all’origine di una serie di importanti processi istituzionali
che ebbero ricadute significative per la costruzione dell’identità

Nu gemu nici când îi desfăcu legăturile, dimpotrivă, apa rece cu care vagmistrul îi spăla rana, părea să-i facă plăcere, fiindcă, din vreme în vreme, ochii îi râdeau de mulţumire. Soroka îl mângâie: -Jupâne polcovnic, mâine o să treacă ameţeala. Cu ajutorul lui Dumnezeu scăpăm noi şi din asta. Vorbele i se adeveriră, căci spre seară ameţeala începu să-i treacă; înainte de scăpătatul soarelui, Kmicic privi în jur cu mai multă înţelegere şi întrebă deodată: -Ce-i zgomotul ăsta? -Care zgomot? Nu se aude nimic, răspunse Soroka. Pesemne că zgomotul răsuna numai în capul lui jupân Andrzej, pentru că seara era liniştită. Soarele care apunea, străpungând desişul cu raze piezişe, umplea mohoreala pădurii de luciri aurii, chenăruind trunchiurile roşietice ale pinilor. Nu bătea vântul, doar ici şi colo tufele de aluni, mesteceni şi carpeni îşi scuturau frunzele pe pământ sau vreun animal sălbatic foşnea abia auzit, fugind speriat dinaintea călăreţilor spre bungetul pădurii. Seara era răcoroasă, cu toate acestea, se vede că fierbinţeala începea să-l cuprindă iarăşi pe jupân Andrzej, fiindcă repetă de câteva ori: -Luminăţia ta, între noi, de-acum, pe viaţă şi pe moarte! În cele din urmă, se întunecă de-a binelea, şi Soroka se gândi să poposească undeva, dar pentru că pământul mustea de apă şi copitele fleşcăiau prin noroi, merseră mai departe, vrând să ajungă la un loc mai ridicat şi mai uscat. Călăriră vreun ceas, două, fără a izbuti să iasă din mlaştină. Între timp, răsărise luna plină şi cerul se luminase. Deodată, vagmistrul care mergea în frunte sări din şa şi se uită cu luare-aminte pe jos: -Pe aici au trecut cai, spuse. Se văd urmele în noroi. -Cine putea să treacă pe aici, de vreme ce nu se află nici un drum? rosti unul dintre oştenii care-l sprijineau pe jupân Kmicic. -Dar urme sunt şi încă o mulţime! Uite, colo printre pini se văd ca-n palmă. -Poate că a fost vreun tamazlâc de vite. -Nu cred. Vitele nu mai stau în pădure acum, copitele se văd destul de bine; pe aici au trecut oameni. Bine-ar fi dacă am găsi măcar o colibă în pădure. -Să ne luăm după urme. -Înainte! Soroka încălecă din nou şi porniră. Urmele de copite continuau să se vadă destul de bine în clisa de turbă, iar unele, după cât se putea desluşi la lumina lunii, păreau foarte proaspete. Totuşi, caii se afundau până la genunchi şi mai sus în noroi. Oştenii începeau să se teamă că nu vor mai putea ieşi din aceste mlaştini, că înaintea lor se află ochiuri de apă şi mai adânci, dar după vreo jumătate de ceas simţiră în nări mirosul de fum şi răşină. -Trebuie să fie vreo smolărie prin apropiere! zise Soroka. -Uite, colo, se văd scântei! întări un oştean. Şi, într-adevăr, în depărtare se arătă o dâră de fum roşietică, străpunsă de limbile flăcărilor, în jurul căreia săreau scânteile focului, care ardea într-o groapă. Când se apropiară, oştenii zăriră o colibă, fântâna şi un şopron mare, durat din bârne de pin. Caii, trudiţi de drum, începură să necheze; din şopron le răspunseră alţii, mulţi la număr. În acelaşi timp, înaintea călăreţilor se ivi o făptură îmbrăcată într-un cojoc întors pe dos. -Aveţi cai mulţi? întrebă cel cu cojocul pe umeri. -Omule, a cui e smolăria? spuse Soroka. -Cine sunteţi? De unde-aţi răsărit? întrebă iarăşi păcurarul cu un glas în care se simţea spaima şi uimirea. -Nu te teme! răspunse Soroka. Nu suntem tâlhari! -Vedeţi-vă de drum, n-aveţi ce căuta aici! -Tacă-ţi gura şi du-ne la colibă cât te rugăm cu binele. Nu vezi, necioplitule, că avem un rănit! -Cine sunteţi? -Vezi să nu-ţi răspund cu flinta. Oricum, nu suntem de-o seamă cu tine, argatule. Du-ne la colibă, că de nu, te fierbem în propria smoală. -De unul singur nu pot să vă vin de hac, dar vom fi mai mulţi. Aici veţi muri. -Şi noi vom fi mai mulţi. Hai odată! -Putem să mergem, nu-i treaba mea. -Dacă ai ceva de mâncare, dă-ne mai repede şi adu şi horilcă. Ducem un şleahtic rănit, care-ţi va plăti. -Numai să plece viu de aici. Tot împungându-se cu vorba, intrară în colibă, pe vatra căreia ardea focul, iar din oalele aşezate pe pirostrii ieşea miros de carne înăbuşită. Înăuntru era destulă lărgime. Soroka băgă de seamă de la început că pe lângă pereţi se aflau şase laviţe aşternute din belşug cu piei de oaie. -Aici stă o ceată întreagă! mormăi spre însoţitori. Încărcaţi flintele şi staţi de veghe! Aveţi grijă de necioplitul ăsta, să nu spele putina. În noaptea asta, gazdele vor trebui să doarmă afară, fiindcă noi nu mai ieşim de aici. -Stăpânii nu mai vin astăzi! zise păcurarul. -Cu atât mai bine, n-o să ne mai batem pentru cvartir, iar mâine plecăm, răspunse Soroka. Acum răstoarnă carne în strachină, că suntem tare flămânzi, şi nu te zgârci la ovăz pentru cai. -Păi de unde ovăz aici, la smolărie, înălţimea ta! -Am auzit caii nechezând în şopron; trebuie să fie şi ovăz, că doar nu le dai smoală să mănânce. -Nu sunt caii mei. -Ai tăi sau ai altuia, mănâncă şi ei tot ce mănâncă şi ai noştri. Repede, necioplitule, repede, dacă ţii la pielea ta. Păcurarul nu mai zise nimic. În acest timp, oştenii îl întinseră pe laviţă pe jupân Andrzej care adormise, apoi se aşezară la cină şi mâncară pe săturate carnea înăbuşită şi tocătura de varză din oala uriaşă pe care o găsiră pe vatră. Avură la masă şi fiertură de mei, iar în hruba alăturată Soroka găsi şi un urcior pântecos plin de horilcă. Trase însă numai o înghiţitură şi nu le îngădui nici oştenilor să bea, deoarece hotărâse să fie cu ochii în patru în timpul nopţii. Coliba asta goală, cu laviţe pentru şase bărbaţi şi şopronul în care necheza o întreagă herghelie de cai, i se părea ciudată şi-i stârnea tot felul de bănuieli. Credea că e vreun adăpost de tâlhari, cu atât mai mult cu cât în hruba din care adusese urciorul, văzuse o mulţime de arme agăţate pe pereţi, un butoiaş de pulbere şi felurite gioarse, jefuite pesemne din conacele şleahticilor. În cazul că stăpânii colibei se întorceau, nu se puteau aştepta din partea lor să fie bucuroşi de oaspeţi; mai mult, nu se puteau aştepta nici măcar la milă, aşa că Soroka hotărî să ocupe coliba cu puterea armelor şi să rămână în ea cu forţa sau cu ajutorul negocierilor. Era silit să facă astfel din pricina sănătăţii lui Kmicic pentru care călătoria putea deveni primejdioasă, dar şi pentru siguranţa tuturor. Soroka era un oştean trecut prin ciur şi prin dârmon, care nu se temea de nimic. Cu toate acestea, acum când îşi amintea de prinţul Bogusław, îl cuprindea spaima. Slujindu-l de multă vreme pe Kmicic, ajunsese să creadă orbeşte nu numai în vitejia, ci şi în norocul tânărului stăpân; de nenumărate ori fusese martor la fapte nemaipomenite, a căror cutezanţă se învecina cu nebunia; în toate izbutise şi scăpase nevătămat, îl însoţise pe Kmicic în toate harţurile cu Chowański, luase parte la toate încăierările, atacurile, încălcările şi răpirile lui şi ajunsese la convingerea că nimic nu e prea greu pentru tânăru-i stăpân, că scapă din orice bucluc, biruind pe oricine-i stă împotrivă. Pentru el, Kmicic întruchipa puterea neînfrântă şi norocul, dar se vede că acum nimerise peste unul pe măsura lui. Îşi găsise şi el naşul. Cum era cu putinţă? Un singur bărbat, care se aflase în mâinile lui Kmicic, răpit, fără apărare, izbutise să-i scape şi, mai mult, să-l doboare pe însuşi Kmicic, să-i căsăpească oamenii şi să-i înfricoşeze într-atâta încât fugiseră de teamă să nu se întoarcă asupra lor? Era mai mare minunea şi Soroka îşi pierdea capul gândindu-se la cele întâmplate, deoarece s-ar fi aşteptat la orice pe lumea asta, dar să se afle cineva care să-l doboare pe jupân Kmicic nu; asta n-ar fi crezut-o în ruptul capului. -Să se fi sfârşit oare norocul nostru? mormăi de unul singur, uitându-se mirat împrejur. Aşadar, cu toate că nu o dată îl urmase cu ochii închişi pe Kmicic, când hărţuiau tabăra lui Chowański, înconjurată de o armie de optzeci de mii de oameni, acum, când îi venea în minte prinţul acesta cu părul lung, cu ochi de jupâniţă şi faţa trandafirie, îl cuprindea o spaimă superstiţioasă. Nu mai ştia nici el ce să facă. Îl înfricoşa gândul că mâine sau poimâine va fi nevoit să meargă pe drumurile umblate, pe care putea să se întâlnească oricând cu înspăimântătorul prinţ sau cu urmăritorii lui. Tocmai de aceea pornise prin păduri, iar acum dorea să rămână în această colibă, până ce prigonitorii aveau să le piardă urma şi să-i lase în plata Domnului. Dar, din alte pricini, nici adăpostul acesta nu i se părea lipsit de primejdii. Voia să ştie ce are de făcut, aşa că dădu poruncă oştenilor săi să stea de strajă la uşă şi la ferestrele colibei, iar el se adresă păcurarului: -Ia un felinar şi hai cu mine. -Înălţimea ta, iau o aşchie aprinsă, pentru că n-avem felinar. -Fă cum vrei, dar ai să dai foc la şopron şi la cai, mie...

A Sea of Civilisations, a Mirror of History

From the dawn of the Roman Empire to the emergence of the Atlantic powers, the Mediterranean has never been a passive stage—it has always stood at the centre of historical change. Brought together by a new generation of Italian medievalists specialising in Mediterranean history, this volume explores the rise and fall of empires, the silent weaving of networks by merchants and pilgrims, and the profound transformations shaped by religious encounters—conflictual and symbiotic alike.

Structured thematically and diachronically, the book offers a wide-ranging yet precise portrait of the Mediterranean from the 1st to the 15th century. It engages with the Roman legacy, the expansion of Islam, the endurance of Byzantium, the ambitions of Latin Europe, and the slow emergence of modernity. By transcending national narratives, it presents the Mediterranean as a shared space of mobility, conflict, and cultural entanglement.

The Occitan lyrical tradition offers various possibilities to identify an epistemological processing axis of the concept of ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ as dimensions to indicate the interiority and outer manifestation of it. Starting from the XVIII sonnet (Noi siàn le triste penne sbigottite) this article proposes to investigate the Cavalcantian lexicon related to the expression of feelings and the world of interiority, establishing a lexical, thematic and philosophical comparison with some products of trobadoric lyric and investigating from this perspective the topic, very widespread in the poetry of origins, of ‘celar’.

This paper explores the ways in which religion and science-broadly defined-have been used to construct and imagine ideal societies in the medieval and early modern periods. By examining how otherness is constructed through descriptions of religious practices, attitudes to religious plurality, technological marvels, and natural wonders, I argue that both religion and science serve to simultaneously enhance and bridge the gap between the intended audience and the ideal society. This dual function enables to authors of the ideal societies to ensure that the text in question communicates what makes a given society or condition ideal. In my analysis, I use sources from both the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period in order to emphasise the continuity in utopian thought in the period c.1000-c.1750. The selection of sources includes both widely-known utopian texts and materials that are rarely used in discussions of utopian thinking. The purpose of this selection is to demonstrate how early modern utopian literature is part of a longer historical trajectory.

Scholars [=some but not all!] have argued that this powerful tale is based on the tragic myth of Hippolytus, son of king Theseus, and Phaedra, his lustful stepmother (cf. Euripides, Hippolytus). Like Theseus, Rónán, king of Leinster, has unwisely married a young wife. He has a handsome and beloved son, Mael Fothartaig, from a previous union. Like Phaedra, Rónán's young wife solicits Mael Fothartaig with tragic results for all. The Irish tale is naturalistic: Mael Fothartaig seeks in vain to avoid his own dishonour, and the shame of others. 1 The headnote to the translation in The Celtic Heroic Age (presumably also by Ní Dhonnchadha?), which sums up the story as "There is no fool like an old fool and none as quick to exploit him as Woman," adds that for the son, "the truly awful consequence of hearing out his step-mother's declaration [of sexual interest] may not be the threat posed to his own honour, but rather the exposé of the king's sham marriage, the publicisation of his failure to satisfy his wife, a shame intolerable to so loyal a prince."

It takes some time for the reader to fathom what Eugenia Russell's book is really about, all the more so since the title of the book and the titles of the chapters are somehow misleading. The book does not offer a general overview of literature and culture in late Byzantine Thessalonica, as the title may suggest, but deals with only a few literary works, mainly hymns. The "Prologue: Where is Thessalonica" explores the location of the city in literature, perception, imagination, and mythos. In the first chapter, "Methodology, Parameters and Subject Matter", this exploration continues. The author displays an admirable erudition and offers many interesting and stimulating excursions into modern Greek and other literatures. However, these initially tend to confuse the reader, rather than to help him or her follow the line of the argument. The reader gets under the impression that the book will present him a kind of artistic portrait of the city "as an anticipated destination and as a wistful location of departures", to which "fondness, memory, despair and hurt were central". However, the following chapters turn out to be particularly "philological". The intellectually and scholarly very demanding character of the book both contrasts with the didactic digressions made by the author and is somehow remediated by the many helpful didactic tools (photographs, tables, original texts in Greek an so one, even a list a PhD Topic Suggestions) in the appendices. Only in de last chapter the book fully reveals the reason of the he disorienting introduction. To be sure, Chapter 2, "Thessalonica: Historical and Geographical Background", already brings more clarity. Proceeding from the idea that literature can be a valuable source of historical knowledge, the author presents the hymnic veneration of St. Demetrius, the patron saint of the city, as an expression of Thessalonian civic identity. Chapters 1 and 2 are introductory chapters, constituting Part I of the book. Parts II and III contain case studies focusing on Byzantine hymnography. Chapter 3 deals with Symeon of Thessalonica and the Sung Thessalonian Rite. Symeon, the last archbishop of Thessalonica before the city was captured by the Ottomans, wrote a number of hymns to St Demetrius, who is regarded as the patron saint of the city, which he protects in the same way as the Virgin Mary protects Constantinople. Throughout the book, it is argued that Thessalonica and Constantinople were perceived as "twin cities", sharing the same fate (of being taken by the Ottomans) and being lamented in similar ways. The author highlights the role St Demetrius and the veneration of St Demetrius played in the city's public life, focusing on Symeon's contribution as a writer of hymns. However, most attention is paid to the "technical" features of hymns and encomia and the artificiality of the distinction usually made between both. Chapter 4 focuses on a hymn to St. Demetrius by Philotheos Kokkinos, again presented as an example of civic identity. It is a first edition of the text (preserved in the Bibliotheca Marciana in Venice) and as such of considerable value. An elaborate commentary on the literary and musical form of the Byzantine canon as "another example of the renewed creativity that was characteristic of the ideological make-up of late Byzantium." is added. What makes the hymn an example of civic identity is regrettably only cursory dealt with. Chapter 5 in Part 3 ("Andronikos Kallistos: An Intellectual Biography of an Émigré from Thessalonica") deals with the well-known Byzantine scholar who after the fall of Constantinople emigrated to the West and spent the rest of his life in the Italy, France and England. He taught to several prominent Renaissance scholars and played an important role in the preserving, copying, and commenting Ancient Greek manuscripts, especially texts on poetry and philosophy, some of which he took with him from Constantinopel to the West. In this paper, we aimed to focus on the unusual intitulation found in the charters
of the Bosnian bans, from the period of Ban Stephen II Kotromanić, who,
in documents addressed to local recipients, was titled “I, Saint Gregory, named
Ban Stjepan”. By the end of his reign, this intitulation was reformulated so that
the Ban’s name appeared first, followed by the name of Saint Gregory. Although
scholars have suggested that this might have been a scribe’s error, we argue that
such a reference at the beginning of his rule was deliberate, prompted by the
political circumstances and Ban Stephen II’s struggle to strengthen his position
within Bosnia. Additionally, he undertook efforts to consolidate and conquer surrounding
regions, including Donji Kraji, Usora, Soli, Krajina, and parts of Hum,
where the invocation of the saint was necessary to facilitate the integration of
these areas under his authority. This helped create regional cohesion under the
protection of Saint Gregory, while simultaneously highlighting the role of the Ban
and his family. Once his position was sufficiently strengthened, the intitulation
was reformulated to present the Ban as both ruler and servant of Saint Gregory,
a formula that was subsequently adopted by his successors, including Knez
Vladislav and Ban Tvrtko. In this way, all regions retained a certain degree of
autonomy and distinctiveness, yet remained united under central authority as the
people and lands of Saint Gregory.

The paper presents the term lawbreakers (законопреступници, zakonoprestupnici) in the old Serbian writings of the 13th century. In the first instance, this term was used by Stephen the First-Crowned and Domentian, to denote the negative traits of the characters who stood up against righteous people. Lawbreakers were violators of state order and true faith, based on God's providence and mercy, which is poured out on the main protagonists of Christian history, to create justice in this world. The lawbreakers are Nemanja's brothers, such as Cain or Hanaan, Vukan is also a lawbreaker, then Borilo, who attacked the Serbian ruler, and Strez, who rebelled against him. Heretics are also designated by the same term, because they are not in orthodox faith and unanimity, that is, in the concordance and tradition of one holy, conciliar and apostolic church, thus they fell away from the law of God. The negative characteristics of lawbreakers are evil zeal, evil advice, disrespect, pride, envy, self-will, unreasonableness, which are opposed by the positive characteristics of calmness, meekness, modesty, zeal, cunning, common sense and willingness to sacrifice. Lawbreakers assume their will against God's will, and thereby endanger the order based on divine providence.

I believe it is a paper in its own rights that studies the relationship of war to Christian crusader philosophy and theology towrads its influence to Sir Thomas Malory's 'Le Morte d'Artur'. Whilst it is academic in this sense I also interject my personal views gathered during  my journey to Palestine on a bicycle in 2012 when I was raising awareness for Palestinian sovereignty. For this reason I believe I was making a prophetic statement then as well as today by writing about death in general and the justification for it. My ability is to bring together a collage of different influences and then to make a fuller meaning to the subject in question. This is art in the manner that I may produce art-film so I produce art-literature.

Four of the Twelve Caesars appear in Geoffroy of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain and in Wace's Roman de Brut: Julius Caesar, Augustus, Claudius and Vespasian (plus a short mention of Nero's name). This article identifies the sources of those mentions and explains how they appear in those works.

EnglishThis article compares the figures of Enrique of Aragon, marquis of Villena, and Merlin. There developed in the Middle Ages an antichivalric image of both (motivated by Merlin s prophetic and adivinatory activities and Villena s literary and scientific endeavors) based on their diabolic characteristics. The marginal position occupied by both is explained through late medieval chivalric, cultural, religious and political ideas and concepts.

Galen of Pergamon (129 – c. 216 CE) was a doctor and immensely prolific writer on medical and other subjects. An important component of his legacy, as well as a subject dear to his heart, was anatomy. He would come back to the topic throughout his life, building a corpus of anatomical texts to cover the entirety of the body. In looking back at his life’s work, Galen devised a curriculum of sorts, a way of approaching the entire field of medicine in a graded fashion, constructing a system of principles and knowledge, piece by piece, book by book. The anatomical works were included at an early stage of the curriculum, but divided into two tiers. On the one hand are the so-called “minor anatomical works”, individual books covering distinct systems of the human body (bones, nerves, blood vessels, muscles) and aimed specifically at beginners; on the other hand, we find his monumental Anatomical Procedures, a vast anatomical “textbook” covering 15 books, which teaches the reader about all parts of the human body in an exhaustive manner, progressing through it by way of a complete dissection.

There are many difficulties in understanding the context for the composition of these works. For one, it is not always clear how and by whom Galen himself intended them to be used, and he appears to have changed his view on this throughout his life. What is clear, however, is that there is an obvious difference in ambition between the works for beginners and the Anatomical Procedures. In this thesis, I investigate the position Galen held with respect to the works—what and who does he say they were meant for?—as well as the formal elements of his discourse. I look for example at the ways in which he orders his anatomical expositions, and at the other end, at the microlinguistic details of his language (the use of first person pronouns, verbal forms…), in order to see to which extent the style conforms with Galen’s own ideals. In doing this, I have identified with some precision general and specific differences between the works. The idiosyncrasies of each of the anatomical works appear to respond to a wish from Galen to adapt the presentation and discourse so as to cater to the specific didactic needs for each anatomical system, in a manner that goes beyond the basic dichotomy “minor anatomical works”/Anatomical Procedures.

This article explores Byzantine reflections on the significance of literature (or logoi), as well as the connections between literature and the human experience. It argues that moral attitudes towards literature are central to Byzantine notions of literariness, not opposed to them. Byzantine readers expected literary works to relate meaningfully to their own lives, often expressing this ‘transferability’ in terms of morality and didacticism. Literary aesthetics were valued as buttressing the import of logoi, whose cultivation crucially affected the moral well-being of both state and soul.
