Questa, ricadeva all'interno dei finanziamenti Por campania 2001-2006, ed è stata condotta negli anni in cui il gruppo di lavoro, afferente alla cattedra di archeologia medioevale del Prof. federico marazzi, dava inizio ad un nuovo ambizioso progetto che avrebbe portato alla nascita del Latem 3 (Laboratori di archeologia tardoantica e medioevale) a Piedimonte matese (ce), finalizzato allo studio su vasta scala del paesaggio post-antico della media Valle del Volturno 4 . Le ricerche del 2007-200 hanno permesso di indagare una complessa sequenza stratigrafica (900 us ca.) della zona sommitale del sito, chiusa dalla prima cinta muraria. in particolare, le indagini sono state concentrate nell'area in cui insiste la torre mastia a pianta quadrangolare, alcuni ambienti a sud di essa, di cui si parlerà in dettaglio più avanti, una cisterna posta ad est della torre, e la zona all'estremità sud dell'altura. a queste indagini, ha fatto seguito poi lo scavo della chiesa del borgo con annesso nucleo cimiteriale. Le successive ricerche, svoltesi negli anni 2009-2011, nell'ambito dei cantieri-scuola universitari, hanno invece interessato la fascia est del nucleo sommitale, che ha evidenziato la presenza di 4 ambienti (c2-3-4-5) con andamento n-s, e la zona sud, divisa in 3 vani (b6-7-) orientati o-e (tav. 1). ad oggi, le aree indagate coprono all'incirca il 50% di tutta l'area sommitale (fig. ). i dati stratigrafici, documentati e puntualmente confrontati con le informazioni estrapolate dall'analisi dei reperti (ceramici 5 , numismatici 6 e metallici 7 ), hanno consentito a. frisetti, L. di cosmo, i. ebreo, n. abate tav. 1 -Planimetria generale del sito con indicazione degli ambienti e delle strutture oggetto di studio (elab grafica a. frisetti)

This volume contains articles and publications by archaeologists studying the antiquities of the Dnieper Forest-Steppe Left Bank region, as well as museum scholars. It is dedicated to the memory of distinguished scholars Khvedir K. Vovk (1847–1918) and Mykhailo P. Kuchera (1922–1999). The publication brings together research materials on the history of archaeology, as well as studies in Bronze Age and Early Iron Age archaeology, the Middle Ages, and the Cossack era.
Intended for archaeologists, historians, heritage preservation specialists, museum professionals, local historians, and all those interested in the ancient past of Poltava region and the Left Bank Dnieper region of Ukraine.

This monograph, the work of five authors, explores the relationship between objects and peopleagriculturalists, artisans, and others outside the elite-who lived in the countryside and small towns in England between 1370 and 1600. This multiple authorship-two archaeologists and three historians-has shaped an impressive inter-disciplinary endeavour that is seldom seen. Hundreds of carefully written pages with substantial statistical, visual, and cartographic material provide well-grounded support for the arguments of the authors, in an Open Access piece that is accompanied by three fully available online databases. The book engages with two major questions: what were the objects consumed by non-elite rural and small-town households in late medieval and sixteenth-century England, and what factors influenced these consumption habits? The work thereby contributes to the vibrant scholarship on the relevance of consumption for economic growth in the pre-industrial past, and to the debates about 'consumer revolutions'. Yet objects are also seen as instruments expressing identity and meaning, in a closer connection to anthropological views that go beyond the canonical economic determinants of consumer behaviour. Contrasts between town and country are also provided throughout, discussing traditional paradigms that present peasant consumers as people having simple and frugal consumer habits. The research is based on an extensive collection of previously unpublished documents. In the absence of substantial specimens of probate inventories for the late medieval period (the popular written source for serial uses in this field), an important collection of lists of seizures of goods from felons, fugitives, and outlaws from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries is presented. These were ordered by a royal official, the escheator. For the sixteenth century, the authors turn to records of the coroner, a royal official in the Tudor era. The written evidence is discussed along with that from archaeological excavations of rural settlements. The book covers a range of areas all over England and shows real flair in dealing with the contrasts and mismatches that eventually emerge when comparing the material and the written evidence.

New ceramic incense burners from stratified layers of the 11th century are being introduced into scientific circulation. It is concluded that this category of artifacts cannot be a chronological and ethnic marker of the early Sogdians in the Chui Valley.

The diversity of imported goods is characteristic of the Prussian burial sites from the H (late pagan)
period. The Sambian Peninsula, based on the abundance of artifacts of Old Rus‘ type, can be compared
in the Baltic Sea region with the territory of Eastern Latvia. These artifacts are most commonly found
in the rich cremation graves of Sambian Prussian warrior-riders, among which are items imported also
from the Western Europe, such as bronze vessels, silver coins, and sword blades. An unusual context
is the discovery of slate spindle whorls in the Prussian territory, typically found in Sambian cremation
graves along with weapons and equestrian equipment.

Horse sacrifice and deposition are enigmatic features of funerary rituals identified across prehistoric Europe that persisted in the eastern Baltic. Genetic and isotopic analysis of horses in Balt cemeteries [1st to 13th centuries CE (Common Era)] dismantle prevailing narratives that locally procured stallions were exclusively selected. Strontium isotope analysis provides direct evidence for long-distance (~300 to 1500 kilometers) maritime transport of Fen-noscandian horses to the eastern Baltic in the Late Viking Age (11th to 13th centuries CE). Genetic analysis proves that horses of both sexes were sacrificed with 34% identified as mares. Results transform the understanding of selection criteria, disprove sex-based selection, and elevate prestige value as a more crucial factor. These findings also provide evidence that the continued interaction between pagans and their newly Christianized neighbors sustained the performance of funerary horse sacrifice until the medieval transition. We also present a reference 87 Sr/ 86 Sr isoscape for the southeastern Baltic, releasing the potential of future mobility studies in the region.

The Late Viking Age cemetery at Ostriv, located approximately 80 kilometres south of Kyiv in the region of the River Ros’, was discovered by a team from the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IA NASU) in 2017. By 2022, 100 inhumation graves had been excavated in an area of 1,500 square metres, of which 50% to 60% are analysed in the article. Most of the artefacts from Ostriv are uncommon in Ukraine, but are frequently found in the east Baltic region. This suggests a complex multi-ethnic population. This article provides the results of the 2018–2022 pilot project – one of the first syntheses of the archaeological artefacts and burial rites from Ostriv, informed by the results of 14C dating, stable isotopes, aDNA, physical anthropology and non-destructive metal analyses. It represents an important contribution to the renewed interest in early Medieval migration, ethnic complexity and cultural encounters. Despite the wartime difficulties in Ukraine, joint German-Ukrainian research at Ostriv continues.

The subject of this paper is medieval leather scabbards from archaeological excavations in Turku, southwest Finland. In addition, the related accessories of swords – cover-guards and handle grips – are discussed. The purpose is to review these artefact groups, last surveyed for the author’s licentiate thesis published in 2005. Based on the latest review made for this paper, it can be concluded that the number of scabbards has slightly increased, and both their dating and distribution has expanded. Moreover, new information regarding the composition and refurbishment of scabbards is available.

Around 1879, a hoard was discovered in the village of Laz (Alba). The pieces were found under a rock near the village, in a hole covered with a slab and consisted of gold (a chain and rings), silver (two signet rings, a silver "crown" decorated with crosses, silver beads with flowers, a fibula, a bracelet, a belt, pearl-shaped beads) and coins. The discovery was described in detail by Albert Amlacher in 1889. On the basis of the Agnus Dei ring, we believe that the hoard is from the Middle Ages and was part of a Saxon female ceremonial garment worn by the elite of the Sebeș area. The hoard could have been hidden in the context of the Turkish raids in either 1438 or 1479.

he article focuses on the analysis of the wooden buckets used in human burials of the Ostriv cemetery
studied in 2017–2020. The discovery of dominant culture-defining artefacts, such as penannular and
ring brooches, zoomorphic bracelets, and spiral neck-rings, suggest that this ancient population may
be originated from the coastal part of the East Baltic region, including Sambian Peninsula, historical
Curonia and Semigallia and the results of anthropological and paleogenetic studies reinforce this theory.
One of the characteristic features of the burial rite of the Ostriv cemetery was the presence of sacrificial
food stored in vessels (buckets). Remnants of buckets – in the form of bandings hoops, handle mounts, and
forged handles – were found placed at the feet of the deceased. Taking into account the fact that buckets
were not generally incorporated into the burial practices of the Baltic tribes of that time, the authors
of the article suggest that this rite infiltrated into their society after migration to the Porossya region
of Ukraine and was associated with the complex processes of the Christianization of the Baltic settlers.

U radu se raspravlja o gradu Livnu u kontekstu ranosrednjovjekovne
hrvatske države. Nastoji se odgovoriti na pitanje je li Livno bilo jedno od
važnih središta ili tek ruralno područje na periferiji države. S obzirom na
to da je Livno kao urbano naselje arheološki gotovo neistraženo, temi se
pristupa iz različitih aspekata, pri čemu se izlazi iz strogih kronoloških i
geografskih okvira utvrđenog ranosrednjovjekovnog grada, koji je stratigrafski
još uvijek najveća nepoznanica. Povijesni izvori potvrđuju postojanje
utvrđenog ranosrednjovjekovnog grada Livna (Cleuna, Hlivno),
a osim njih, pri istraživanju su poslužili arheološki nalazi, topografija i
rijetki sačuvani ostatci s terena. Na temelju sakupljenih podataka nastojalo
se rekonstruirati položaj i ulogu ranosrednjovjekovnog utvrđenog
grada Livna, s okolnim područjem, u okvirima ranosrednjovjekovne hrvatske
države te ukazati na okolnosti stradanja i pregradnji srednjovjekovnog
grada.

Summary.
The brethren Johan and Cornelis de Wyse lived in the town of Breda. John lived from 1636 until 1725, his younger brother Cornelis from 1640 until 1704. John and Cornelis were clever merchants. They spread the risk over different economic sectors. John travelled to Gdansk (Danzig) to buy ingredients for his soap manufacture. They were active everywhere and especially John was an important member of the Breda society. As they were Roman Catholic they could not become a member of the city council. All positions in government were reserved for members of the state protected Reformed Church. Johan married Ida van Rucphen. Her brother was one of the many stewards of the prince of Orange, the lord of Breda and its Barony. The brethren invested the money they did not need for their living mainly in land and farms. As John and Ida realized they would die childless, they decided to found a still existing monastery of Capuchin friars just across the border with the Spanish Netherlands in Meersel-Dreef. They were buried in the church. The relation with the Order of Capuchins was intense and existed until 1797. Cornelis was steward of the monastery Vredenberg (Mount of Peace) situated originally near Breda. Because of the Eighty Years War the nuns had fled to the town of Lier south of Antwerp but they kept their possessions in Breda. The title of the article is 'Doing business across borders'. That was just what the brethren did. The original version of this article has been published in the Yearbook De Oranjeboom (= The Orange Tree), vol. 55 (2002), p. 142-180. Tabula Peutingeriana marque la distance de 18 milles romain (environ 26,5 km) entre Ancialis (aujourd'hui Pomorie) et Apollonia (aujourd'hui Sozopol). Mais il у a une differance parmi cette distance et la distance reele entre Pomorie et Sozopol (environ 50-51 km), C'est le problem principal, qui je recherche dans cette travail. D'avance je fais une revue critique a les assais recent pour leur peignage. L'hypothese nouvelle, que je propose est fondee a la base de l'interpretation nouvelle de Tabula Peutingeriana et Itineraria Romana. Premierment, je localise Pudizo de Tabula Peutingeriana a la region de debouchee de lac de Mandra, a la route l'ouest de la Mer Noir entre Ancialis et Apollonia. Ainsi, je parviens iusqu'a permission le plus passablement pour aujourd'hui, car la somme de 17 milles (la distance entre Ancialis et Pudizo) et 18 milles (la distance entre Pudizo et Apollonia) est 35 milles (environ 51,8 km), qui coincide approximativement avec la distance d'environ 50 km entre Pomorie et Sozopol.

The determination of the potential risks and dangers as well as their degree of danger on the archaeological sites in the upper flow of the river Bregalnica is of strategic importance to them. Thus, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the profile of the potential hazards and the elements of risk on archaeological sites will contribute to preventing them from destruction and damage. Towards all this adding and capacity, communication and coordination with the subjects of culture, protection and rescue, crisis management and others those involved in this issue with a responsible and effective implementation of the necessary measures to prevent and deal with assessed risks and hazards will enable more efficient protection and rescue of archaeological sites in case of their occurrence

Archaeological evidence from funerary contexts is largely ignored in current scholarship on the First Plague Pandemic, despite the important information that burials and cemeteries can provide about how plague might have affected societies. Skeletal (mainly dental) remains are used in the paleogenomic search for victims of plague (Yersinia pestis), but significant contextual information is to be gained from plague-positive graves through bioarchaeological study of the complete individual and their broader funerary context, both of which are largely absent from current scholarship. We argue that future scholarship on the First Plague Pandemic must bring burial archaeology to the growing body of evidence, and archaeologists themselves must lead or be involved in this research. We present three ways in which burial archaeology can be used effectively to study the impact of first-pandemic plague on individuals and communities: by reconsidering whether we should be looking for an archaeology of "crisis" for this disease event, by evaluating burial archaeology (especially of multiple burials) in its proper sociocultural context, and by examining bioarchaeological evidence from entire cemeteries where plague genomes are recovered in any quantity. We conclude by offering an example of how such archaeological evidence can be more inclusively and effectively incorporated into interdisciplinary plague studies, to the benefit of the field.

Sulla scorta delle strutture messe in luce dagli scavi condotti negli anni Settanta del XX secolo, riviste alla luce della relazione degli scavi condotti dal Ridolfi nel XIX secolo, si propone una ricostruzione della storia dell'area poi occupata dal battistero di Lucca, individuando, il particolare, il reimpiego integrale nella struttura di un edificio del II secolo d.C.

In 1956, the Institute of Archaeology and the National Museum in Belgrade carried out excavations at the site of Supska, near Ćuprija, in Central Serbia. Based on the material culture findings, the site is mostly known as a Late Neolithic one; however, archaeological findings from other periods were discovered too. In the 1956 excavations, the cultural layers, and archaeological features with the Vinča culture archaeological materials were examined, as well as one grave, marked as Grave 1. The results of this excavation have been previously published in one monograph; however, an anthropological analysis of the individual found in Grave 1 has not been conducted before. In this paper, we present the results of contextual, bioanthropological, stable isotopes and C 14 analyses of human skeletal remains found in Grave 1. The results showed that a young adult, who had experienced nonspecific metabolic stress during childhood, as evidenced by traces of linear enamel hypoplasia and porotic hyperostosis, was buried in this grave. AMS date revealed that this individual lived between 1280-1390 cal. AD, while the results of the stable isotope analyses suggested that it had mixed diet based on C 4 plants (such as millet) and/or C 3 plants, with larger amounts of animal protein, possible deriving from freshwater fish.

The paper discusses the circular buckles found in pairs from some burials excavated in Koroinen, a 13th–14th century episcopal see site in Turku, SW Finland. Based on the comparative archaeological material from Britain and elsewhere in Europe, the buckles most probably represent hose buckles i.e., they attached the hose to the undergarment of the male dress using buckles and straps. The finds seem to represent dress accessories of men with a high ecclesiastical status, and who were buried fully clothed, unlike common people who usually got a modest, shrouded burial. Furthermore, the circular buckles found in Koroinen seem to be the first archaeological indication of the use of hose as part of the men’s clothing in medieval Finland.

The article deals with castles from 11.- 12th century in Moravia. Most part of them eas founded about the middle of the 11th century after the conquest of Moravia by Přemyslids about 1029. They fulfilled administrative and defensive functions, and were also centers for collecting princely taxes. We can distinguish three categories of these seats. Their decline began around the middle of the 12th century. Following this exercise all the kilns except one,], were located due north of the mansion of Stenhouse, within the location of the sand quarries. The bearings for kiln J appear to be erroneous and should be discounted. The placename 'Stenhouse' possibly refers to Arthur's O'on, a stone-built circular structure resembling a kiln, of uncertain origin but generally regarded as a Roman temple. This structure formerly stood to the South of the mansion of Stenhouse, but was removed by the landowner, Sir ~lichael Bruce, to build a dam for a nearby meal mill in 1743. 3 Despite its destruction, it continued to be represented on plans of the second half of the 18th century. 4 This building is mentioned asfurnum Arthuri in a charter to Newbattle Abbey (Midlothian) in 1293,5 a reference which indicates that its origins were unknown and already ancient at that time. Stenhouse itself belonged to the Morham family and was originally part of the barony of Dunipace (Falkirk). It should not be confused with Stenhouse, near Liberton, Midlothian, belonging to the Melvilles and inherited through a Melville heiress by the Lords Ross of Halkhead 6 or with Stenhouse in Lanarkshire. Sir Adam de Morham granted the mill of Stanhus to the Cistercian monks of Newbattle Abbey in the 13th century, a grant confirmed by his son, Thomas, lord of Morham. 7 In addition, in 1293 William Gurlay granted to the monks of Newbattle 'one pond on his land for the work and use of their mill of Stanhus, which is situated beside Arthur's Oven, within the barony ofDunipace, together with half an acre of his land, if so much is lying between the old course of the water flowing from the said pond and the new waterlead from that pond to the said mill'. The development of the international project "Pursuing Public Health in the Preindustrial World, 1100-1800," funded by the Australian Research Council (DP220102914), offered the Siena Unit research team the opportunity to investigate the topic of pre-modern public health, so far largely centred on cities, by studying the case of the rural community that lived in the medieval mining castle of Rocca San Silvestro. The project initially focused on applying the most updated methodologies to the study of the burials excavated in the site's cemetery in the last decades of the last century, during the archaeological investigations directed by Riccardo Francovich. Later, the research was extended to the site and its surrounding territory, using geochemical, archaeobotanical and archaeozoological analyses with the aim of gaining a deeper knowledge of the site and its relationship with the landscape and its resources (mining, forestry and agricultural). The paper discusses the research strategy adopted in relation to the historical questions involved in this ‘return to the castle’, and the methodologies applied in the different fields of investigation.

The following article intends to provide a concise overview of Medieval non‑ferrous metalwork at Kinet Höyük, Province of Iskenderun, Türkiye, through the lens of non‑destructive spectrographic analysis using a pXRF device. Analytical approaches to preand early historic metals root in the groundbreaking work of Martin Heinrich Klaproth, and became, with
the help of modern, easy‑to‑handle spectrographic equipment, an extremely popular undertaking and indispensable facet in modern archaeological and art historical fieldwork. However, bulk analysis of
mundane post‑Bronze or Iron Age materials is still a rather seldom undertaking, with the pXRF results from Medieval Kinet Höyük serving as a fresh addition to the still meagre body of spectrographic data
pertaining to later historical metalwork.

Le procedure di rilievo e documentazione adottate presso lo scavo di Vignale sono variate nel corso del tempo, seguendo un processo continuo e articolato di interazione tra le competenze e le esigenze del gruppo di lavoro e le attrezzature disponibili nel panorama più ampio degli strumenti tecnologici e dei programmi informatici applicati all’archeologia. Il progetto Uomini e Cose a Vignale, fin dai primi anni di indagini, è stato caratterizzato dal riservare un’attenzione specifica alla formazione degli studenti, attraverso la messa in comune di competenze tra i componenti del gruppo di ricerca. Gli archeologi più esperti che di volta in volta hanno assunto ruoli di responsabilità in questo ambito hanno lavorato anche sulla formazione dei più giovani, che spesso in seguito li hanno affiancati o hanno preso in mano a loro volta la gestione del processo di documentazione scritta, grafica, fotografica e video. Dal punto di vista operativo, il rilievo a Vignale ha perseguito costantemente l’accuratezza del dato, privilegiando soluzioni operative sostenibili dal punto di vista dei costi e della speditività di realizzazione sul campo e in laboratorio. La composizione del gruppo di lavoro, in cui persone di età ed esperienza professionale diversa hanno lavorato fianco a fianco ha naturalmente portato a sperimentare continuativamente nel corso del tempo molteplici metodi e strumenti.

In the Middle Ages, people expressed their social differences, positions and roles as well as religious affinities in various ways. One of them was the use of seals, and the present article analyses four recent finds of medieval seal matrices from Finland. Three belong to priests, and based on the use of heraldry, one to a member of the nobility. In terms of materials, one is of silver and the rest bronze alloys. As objects of identity performance, medieval matrices, archival sources permitting, can open large vistas on the genealogical networks of medieval society as well as individuality in medieval culture.

Town Foundations in the 12th/13th Century Transformation Period and the Urbanisation Phases in Pomerania and Brandenburg in the Middle Ages - The article examines the emergence of legal towns in Pomerania and Brandenburg during the great upheavals of the 12th/13th centuries, set against the backdrop of their early urban predecessors from the Slavic period (7th to 12th centuries). It demonstrates that the establishment of towns represented the final stage of an urbanisation history that can be clearly divided into three phases. Firstly, maritime trading centres on the Baltic coast had taken on central functions; these emporia existed from the 8th to the 10th century. This phase was followed by the late Slavic »castle towns« (Burgstädte), which flourished in the 11th and 12th centuries. Subsequently, a number of legal towns emerged. Despite this progression, urban development was marked by major disruptions and new beginnings. The overview of urbanisation history also includes subordinate centres, merchant settlements, and villae fori, as well as towns deserted as a result of de-urbanisation processes.

CONSTRUCTION SITES OF MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS IN ITALIAN CITIES (LATE MIDDLE AGES - MODERN AGE): CROSSROADS OF KNOWLEDGE, TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS.

The relevance of municipal buildings in the urban landscape and public life of Italian cities has long been acknowledged as one of the distinctive features of cultural heritage from the 13th century to the present day. Civic architecture - a heterogeneous collection of buildings and spaces designed for diverse functions and conceived as a collective endeavour - is the product of a multitude of intentions, aspirations, skills, and constraints imposed by the various actors involved in both the design process and the construction site.
Construction sites, as hubs of technical exchange and operational integration, facilitate an essential intersection of activities. This process yields recognizable, and often strongly characterized, results at the urban scale, impacting multiple buildings with diverse functions.
This session aims to explore the effects of this confluence and exchange of practices and techniques on civic architecture, focusing on the city's municipal building heritage. Moreover, the session encourages a consideration of the ways in which experiences gained in municipal construction sites determined and/or interacted with other urban building of the city, and on the economy of their productive output, thereby fostering an open and dialectical perspective encompassing construction sites of varied patronage and function.
To ensure thematic coherence within the session, we propose the following guiding questions for consideration: What concrete needs arise during the construction or renovation of municipal buildings? What technical and construction solutions are implemented? Are there recurring patterns in the use of building materials? Are the same workers employed across different construction sites, both public and private, and what are the resulting outcomes? Do different groups of workers introduce different technical solutions and distinctive material characteristics to the buildings? From a comparative perspective, are these buildings characterized by similar construction choices and building practices? Do civic construction sites serve as hubs for the development and experimentation of new materials and new approaches to design and construction?
Contributions addressing these themes within the specified chronological period are welcome. Priority will be given to original research that fosters comparative and interdisciplinary discussion.

The palace of Pla de Nadal (Riba-roja de Túria, València) is one of the emblematic buildings of the civil architecture of late-antique Hispania. Despite the exceptional nature of its architectural decoration and two epigraphs, referring to a certanin Tebdemir/Teudemir, there is not unanimity about the promoter and the historical context of the building which ranged from the 7th to 9th centuries. In this debate, we present a radiocarbon dating of the initial construction phase, based on five samples of construction mortar. This allows us to establish a chronology that coincides with the activity of the dux prouinciae Teodomiro, also known as Teodomiro de Orihuela. The series of radiocarbon dates and their subsequent modelling indicate that the firts half of the 8th century is the most probable statistical interval for the construction of the Pla de Nadal.

In the summer of 2009, during maintenance work on the Rhine dike north of the old city centre of Kaiserswerth, a wooden ship was discovered by the ruins of a weir - a so-called batardeau - which was once part of the old Kaiserswerth fortress. The vessel measures nearly 18 metres in length. Since it was located at a depth of 9 metres (at the deepest point) and the work had to be carried out under extreme time pressure, it was not possible to document and recover it in the conventional manner. Instead, methods of documentation and recovery that would meet the requirements of the situation had to be developed while the excavation was in progress. The remains of the batardeau, measuring 40 metres in length and 4 metres in height, were found lying on their side. The weir was presumably constructed around the mid seventeenth century. Cercetarea și reconstituirea istoriei secolelor al VI-lea-al XI-lea în Transilvania rămâne deficitară, extrem de anevoioasă și riscantă. În lipsa izvoarelor scrise, treptat, s-a impus părerea că arheologia ar putea suplini carența informațiilor scrise. După decenii de "programe de cercetare", multe dictate de comandamente politice, constatăm astăzi că apetitul arheologiei pentru această epocă a scăzut simțitor în România. Explicit sau tacit arheologii care respectă deontologia cercetării au renunțat la ideea că arheologia ar reuși să umple golul de informație istorică pentru această perioadă. Astăzi, la nivel internațional, arheologia nu mai este o umilă ancilla historiae, este o disciplină distinctă, cu metode de cercetare proprii, încă din secolul trecut plasată de teoreticieni mai aproape de antropologie decât de istorie 1 . În acest context, în România, raporturile între istorie și arheologie sunt astăzi diferite în comparație cu ultimele decenii ale secolului al XXlea. Mai vechea tentație a arheologilor de a confirma informații scrise prin descoperiri arheologice este astăzi considerată o metodologie abuzivă și, în consecință, tot mai puțin acceptată în mediile de specialitate. We present a basic summary of the research conducted on the Bou Ferrer shipwreck since 2006, which has provided interesting new data about a navis oneraria well dated to the second half of the 1st century AD. Despite that fact that only one major trench was excavated up until 2017, about 55 m 2 of wooden structures in a good state of preservation have been revealed, providing information about her construction. There are construction elements that may be considered common for Roman Period wrecks, as well as others with fewer archaeological parallels. The presence of a double garboard is not unprecedented in the 1st century AD, but deserves further study. Many hull pieces, from the lower wale to another that we consider as an upper wale, are sufficient elements to propose a preliminary measurement of width amidships. These lines, combined with the stowed amphorae carrying fish sauces, open the possibility that a third perishable cargo might also have been transported. Les premières campagnes ont fourni de nouvelles données sur une navis oneraria bien datée de la seconde moitié du I er siècle apr. J.-C. En dépit du fait qu'une seule grande tranchée ait été fouillée jusqu'en 2017, ce sont environ 55 m 2 de structures en bois, en bon état de conservation, qui ont été mis au jour, fournissant d'importantes informations sur la construction du navire. Si certaines caractéristiques de la construction se rencontrent communément sur les épaves de la période romaine, d'autres offrent moins de parallèles archéologiques. La présence d'un double galbord n'est pas sans précédent au I er siècle apr. J.-C. mais mérite une étude plus approfondie. De nombreuses pièces de la coque, conservées de la préceinte basse à la probable préceinte haute, permettent de proposer une première évaluation de la largeur d'origine au maître couple. Cette estimation des dimensions, combinée au calcul de l'encombrement des amphores contenant des sauces de poisson, pose la question de la présence éventuelle d'une troisième cargaison périssable qui aurait disparu.

Questo terzo volume, dedicato all’Italia meridionale ed alle sue isole maggiori, conclude la serie consacrata al tema de La villa dopo la villa, focalizzando l’attenzione su Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria e, non ultime, Sicilia e Sardegna. L’obiettivo mira a presentare, aggiornare e discutere lo stato delle conoscenze sulle ville tardoantiche (IV-VII secolo d.C.) nelle regioni sopra indicate, al fine di verificare la “tenuta” dei modelli interpretativi del fenomeno dell’occupazione delle ville durante la tarda Antichità e delle successive fasi di riuso e riconversione di tali Insediamenti nel corso dell’alto Medioevo.
Il tema di questa serie non è di per sé affatto sconosciuto alla riflessione storico-archeologica. Tuttavia vari argomenti rendevano utile una ripresa del soggetto. Tra questi, in primis l’intensa e diffusa attività di ricerca di campo, spesso facente ricorso a metodi d’indagine che, oltre all’affidabilità scientifica, si caratterizzano, almeno in teoria, per la comparabilità del dato archeologico come conseguenza del ricorso alla stratigrafia, all’archeometria, all’impiego di sistemi di datazione assoluta e all’applicazione di tecnologie per la raccolta e la processazione dei dati, fino ad arrivare, laddove possibile, alla ricostruzione virtuale di edifici e strutture.
Il quadro che emerge dai contributi riuniti mostra come i processi di destrutturazione del sistema delle ville ebbero a volte degli esiti diversi all’interno di zone che dalla guerra greco-gotica iniziarono a differenziarsi ulteriormente tra territori longobardi e bizantini e successivamente, per la Sicilia, anche islamici. Si tratta di un panorama eterogeneo non solo per la varietà degli approcci metodologici e della scala dei casi studio presi in esame (dalle singole ville, alle sintesi regionali, passando per esempi di analisi di singole realtà territoriali), ma anche per la qualità dei dati archeologici utilizzati (da vecchie indagini, da survey o da scavi sistematici). I contributi di questo volume propongono, dunque, nuovi dati e nuove riflessioni che arricchiscono il quadro generale sulla fine delle ville in Italia, ma introducono anche nuove tematiche legate allo specifico del Meridione e delle isole maggiori oltre a confermare come un approccio globale allo studio delle ville romane sia necessario alle ricerche storico-archeologiche sui paesaggi tra tarda Antichità e Medioevo.

This article presents the results of the underwater expedition conducted in the summer of 2021 in Lake Śniardwy, near Zdory village in the Masurian Lakeland (Poland). In the winter of 1938, a boy found an iron spearhead near the shore of the lake — both the documentation of this discovery and the mentioned spearhead (which is now housed in the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte in Berlin, Germany) survived the Second World War. Members of the expedition have successfully located the previous discovery’s position, furthermore, in the direct vicinity, another very interesting artefact was found, i.e. a partially preserved massive fibula, decorated with rings on the bow and foot. Similar brooches, described as a type 4–5 by Nils Åberg, are known from the area of the Olsztyn Group and dated to the sixth–the beginning of the seventh centuries (phase E). They have parallels on the Sambian Peninsula and within the territory ofLithuania. Sambian brooches, which are believed
to be derived from the Late Roman and the Early Migration Period fibulae with ring decoration, declined at the beginning of the sixth century. By this time they were popular among Lithuanian tribes, where the earliest specimens of type 4–5 belong to the second half of the fifth century and the latest even to the eleventh century. Among all known brooches with ring decoration, there is one specimen found in the peat bog at Užpelkiai in western Lithuania. This leads us to the question of the proper interpretation of the fibula from Śniardwy. The question of whether it was a part of a ‘war booty sacrifice’, or something different, must be postponed until the next explorations although some speculations are presented in this paper.

During a regular underwater archaeological survey in the sacrificial lake site dated to the Roman Period far later and much earlier objects were also found: i.a. a logboat from the fourth century BC, as well as an extraordinary medieval spearhead. The latter was found in 2019, at a depth of c. 1.5 m, in the sandy-stony lakebed sediment, among boulders. The artefact was covered by a five-centimetre-thick layer of sand. Its blade is divided into two sections: the lower (larger) is placed typically for the heads of pole weapons; another is also situated on the long axis, but perpendicularly to the lower one, making the blade resemble an auger or a drill bit. The spearhead from Lake Lubanowo does not have any exact parallels, but due to its technical characteristics, it should be dated to the Middle Ages. However, while taking into account the ‘not exact’ analogies, one may suggest its connection with the Viking milieu and date it to the second half of the eighth century. Both explanations cannot be treated as certain at the moment, due to the rarity of actual parallels. As far as the functional matters are concerned, the artefact’s shape suggests a military purpose (javelin?), but it may have been treated as an insigne as well (reasoning from the unusual form). It was most probably deposited in the lake intentionally, not by chance.
