Most books that existed in medieval Norway and Denmark are now lost or exist only in fragmentary form. The fragment collections of the Norwegian and Danish National Archives and the Royal Library in Copenhagen hold thousands of remnants of manuscripts, an invaluable source of knowledge of medieval book culture. The entwined history of Norway and Denmark represents a potential methodological challenge, as fragments from the same manuscript can sometimes be found scattered among collections in the two countries. This article examines such a case, showing how a single fragment from a twelfth-century missal in the National Archives in Norway was matched with several fragments in the Danish collections. The identifications, which were rendered possible by increased access to digital images, provide new insights into the missal’s likely origin and medieval provenance, putting us on the trail of an important Danish scriptorium.

Composé vers 810 par Raban Maur, alors qu'il séjournait dans le monastère de Fulda, le traité In honorem sanctae crucis a connu une très large diffusion au Moyen Âge, ainsi que l'atteste le nombre important de témoins conservés jusqu'au xvi e siècle 1 . This article studies the emergence of the Pomianyk (Synodikon) as a separate type of Cyrillic manuscript. The emergence of Pomianyk is analysed in the context of the funeral prayer practice used in the Kyiv Metropolis of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the early modern period. Pomianyk and the memorial records in other books are seen as expressions of memory. The findings revealed that a practical necessity at the request of believers to save their souls in the 16th and 18th centuries was the reason for developing such a separate type of manuscript. The historical sources reflect the mindset of the people of that time, who believed that through charitable activities in favour of the Church, they would receive absolution and salvation of the soul after death. Hetman Ivan Skoropadskyi donated funds to restore the Great Church of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra because he wanted God’s protection both during his life and after his death. The author explores the genesis of the Pomianyk in the donation records in church books and their memorial entries. This study analyses 14 manuscript Pomianyks used in the churches of Kyiv Metropolis, with particular attention paid to the 1741 “Nyzkynychi Pomianyk”, which has not yet been the subject of a separate analysis. In addition, other manuscripts and early printed books of the early modern period, which best reveal the problems of funeral practice in the stated region and at the specified time, were involved in the study.

Binding books “in the Greek manner” (“alla greca”, but also “al greco”, “alla grechessa”), imitating and replicating Byzantine techniques, was one of the practices associated with “Greekness” in Italy and other parts of western Europe in the early modern era. This book analyses the trends, patterns, and contexts associated with making Greek-style bindings in early modern Venice and elsewhere in western Europe between the 1450s and the end of the sixteenth century. It considers how techniques evolved over time as well as production and consumption practices: what kinds of manuscripts and printed books received Greek-style bindings, who made them, who collected them, and what meanings the bindings themselves conveyed. Coming into fashion at a time of major changes (coinciding with the fall of Constantinople, the Greek diaspora, and the coming of printing), in western Europe Greek-style bindings at times signified antiquarianism, exoticism, luxury, or a proximity to Greek culture. Through the analysis of several hundred specimens in the style and of documentary and visual sources, this book explores how a specific instance of material culture served a number of purposes and self-fashioning strategies for bibliophiles, collectors, and intermediaries alike within the context of Renaissance cultures; it also features a census of all known bindings in the style made in western Europe.

Pistes codicologiques pour l'atelier du chansonnier des troubadours E (BNF, fr. 1749) (avec des considérations sur la tradition vénitienne de la poésie des troubadours) Relativement peu considéré dans les études pionnières sur les chansonniers des troubadours d'Aurelio Roncaglia, de d'Arco Silvio Avalle et de leurs écoles respectives, tout au long des trente-cinq dernières années, le chansonnier E (Bibliothèque nationale de France, fr. 1749) s'est vu consacrer plusieurs travaux. 1 Je voudrais présenter ici de nouveaux aperçus relatifs à la facture matérielle du manuscrit, qui rejoignent les observations récemment avancées par Gilda Caïti-Russo au sujet de la langue du chansonnier et de la textualité qui s'y manifeste. As much as we prize evidence of prehistoric or archaic uses of mechanical tools or tropes, it can be difficult to assess what sort of understanding accompanies their use. 1 This is the case especially for devices that were in use for millennia, like the stationary pulley, and proliferated widely, like the potter's wheel. The lever is one such device. This question of varieties of understanding figures in Hippocrates' justly famous accounts of how to reduce shoulder dislocations in his On Joints (Peri Arthrôn) 1-11. 2 My aim in this chapter is to evaluate the several modes of reduction of the shoulder described by Hippocrates in Joints 2-7 in terms of the mode of cognition or understanding of leverage and associated physical phenomena present in this treatise of art (technê), not science (mathêma or epistêmê).

Dans le milieu académique français les croisements entre diverses matières sont fortement encouragés, enrichissant par là même la réflexion théorique sur les outils méthodologiques. Ainsi, certaines sciences relativement jeunes prennent aujourd’hui place auprès de disciplines classiques. C’est le cas de la génétique du texte. Apparue dans le prolongement du structuralisme dans les années soixante-dix, complémentaire de la philologie classique, de la sémiologie et de la linguistique, elle entend compléter l’horizon épistémologique du texte en donnant à voir l’écriture non plus comme un résultat, mais comme un processus de création en train de s’accomplir. La génétique pénètre de plus en plus le champ des études hispaniques. C’est pourquoi la parution des quatre volumes des Papiers de travail de l’écrivain argentin Juan José Saer, et la conservation de ses manuscrits à l’Université de Princeton, nous sont apparus comme un motif bibliographique suffisant pour nous replonger dans l’étude de son œuvre. Afin de donner à voir le travail génétique en littérature de langue hispanique, nous illustrerons notre propos par l’analyse de la nouvelle « Sombras sobre vidrio esmerilado » à partir de la transcription d’un incipit abandonné et du manuscrit du cahier numéro 5 – tous deux présents dans le premier volume des Papiers de travail- et d’un feuillet volant extrait du Fonds Saer.

Manuale curatorum predicandi - the treatise on the art of preaching written by Basel scholar Johann Ulrich Surgant in 1502 - is usually classified as a humanist and nearly proto-reformation work. The paper disputes this classification; it provides several analytical textual probes to show the deep dependence of the Manuale curatorum on the older scholastic tradition. Following on from former research, a few relatively well-known high and late medieval artes praedicandi are identified as the main sources of Surgantʼs writing. Moreover, the study aims to trace specific manuscripts or early prints in Basel libraries, which could have been directly used by the author-compiler.

Dès le Haut Moyen Âge, la cité de Metz a été un important centre de production de manuscrits enluminés : de précieux ouvrages, comme le sacramentaire de Drogon (Paris, BnF ms. latin 9428), sont ainsi réalisés au IXe siècle dans l’entourage des évêques . Dans les siècles qui suivent, les abbayes Saint-Vincent, Saint-Arnoul et celle de Gorze abritent une riche activité intellectuelle qui nécessite la présence d’ateliers de copie de manuscrits, parfois enluminés. En parallèle de cette production monastique, des ateliers laïcs destinés à procurer aux membres des élites urbaines divers types d’ouvrages émergent dans le cours du XIIIe siècle : des enlumineurs et des parcheminiers sont ainsi attestés dans les bans de tréfonds messins dès les décennies 1260-1270. Si le terme d’enluminor disparaît après 1330 de ces archives, celui de peintre y apparaît alors : sous cette dénomination sont regroupés tous les artisans – y compris les enlumineurs – en charge de la production picturale ou travaillant à partir des matières premières précieuses (or, pigments rares…) . C’est dans le cours du XIVe siècle que ces corps de métier se regroupent et s’organisent.

La construction du Cycle de Guiron, lequel relate des aventures datant de la jeunesse du roi Arthur voire du règne d'Uterpendragon, interroge l'idée d'Antiquité et de ce qui est "antique" pour un auteur médiéval. Sont explorés la chronologie du cycle par rapport à la fiction arthurienne, les repères historiques et géopolitiques, ainsi que les réminiscences du monde classique. Il en ressort que Guiron propose une vision profane et passéiste, où l'Antiquité marque l'apogée de l'histoire.

La ricerca prende avvio da una fonte letteraria quattrocentesca: il Tractatus contra principales errores perfidi Machometi (1459) del cardinale castigliano Juan de Torquemada (1388-1468). L’opera riflette l’intervento e l’influenza che questo personaggio, di grande rilievo alla corte dell’allora pontefice Pio II, esercitò in quel contesto in rapporto alla questione turco-islamica. Tale ricerca si colloca dunque nel quadro degli studi storici che approfondiscono i rapporti interreligiosi sviluppatisi nell’Europa pre-moderna – specie in relazione alla questione islamica che, in quegli anni cruciali, fu enormemente discussa sul piano teologico, oltreché politico e socio-culturale.
Il discorso può essere inserito nel più ampio contesto delle crociate tardive, e in particolare nella loro evoluzione susseguente alla conquista di Costantinopoli (1453) per mano del sultano Maometto II: un tema che avrebbe continuato a suscitare interrogativi e a esigere risposte in relazione all’impatto negativo (reale o presunto) dell’islam nell’Europa mediterranea alle soglie della modernità. L’opera fu composta, su richiesta di Pio II, in vista della Dieta di Mantova (settembre 1459) con l’obiettivo di persuadere i principi europei della necessità di partire alla volta di Costantinopoli per combattere contro i Turchi.

Depending on one’s place in medieval Europe, the sea might be the centre of the known world or the final frontier. The sheer potential has always attracted humans towards this great unknown, learning to use the sea to catch fish, sail to distant lands for reasons of faith and trade, establish contacts with civilisations of different beliefs, wage wars for political and economic dominance as well as inspiring poetry and dreams of the world beyond. This all reflects in the many works that, within the scope of Archaeology, History of Art, History, Literature and many other fields, have in recent decades studied fishing and natural resources, overseas trade and commercial institutions, maritime power and the management of socio-economic conflicts, and religious migrations, among other topics.

The sixth edition of the International Conference “Medieval Europe in Motion” focuses on the sea: a theme that has been asserting itself with in the medieval studies context in keeping with its international character, the quality of its participants and the search for the cross-fertilisation of perspectives and methodologies around a theme capable of benefiting from distinct but equally enriching approaches. The Program brings together a highly regarded group of keynote speakers, in conjunction with a wide range of papers, congregating almost one hundred researchers from many different countries.

The Conference will also feature a section dedicated to “Medieval Lisbon and the Sea”, thereby providing continuity to the tradition of studying Lisbon at the Institute of Medieval Studies.

The last twenty years have witnessed a huge change in the study of the ancient and medieval world(s), marked by the implementation of digital technologies, which are becoming more and more present every day. What was once unthinkable is now possible. A very good example is the non-destructive recovery of illegible texts from palimpsest manuscripts, which allows us to expand our knowledge of the written sources from the past.

This lecture will be devoted to a pioneering project in this field: the Sinai Palimpsest Projects of the Early Manuscripts Electronic Library (EMEL) and the Monastery of Saint Catherine, the first project to deal with the imaging and study of the entire collection of palimpsests preserved in one location, taking into account manuscripts written in several different languages. By means of case studies I will illustrate the results of the project and their significance for the scholarly community, and I will emphasise the importance of collaboration between scholars and scientists as the real recipe for success in this endeavour.

The paper considers the manner in which the Venetian historiography represented one of the episodes related to the origins of the Venetian community – along with the Trojan foundations and the mission of St Mark in the lagoon. It is about the representation of Attila the Hun. The presence of Attila is so extended in the Venetian chronicles for the simple reason that it indirectly determined the foundation of the city in the lagoons, traditionally dated in 421.
The devastating expedition of Attila in Italy offered the opportunity to the many Venetian chronicles to present in apocalyptical view and to imply a vision of clash of civilizations between the Christians and the Pagans.
It is somehow undeniable that the part taken by Attila in the history of Venice be connected to a propagandistic feature. It is not by chance that the troops of this terrible enemy and Attila himself are many times regarded as Hungarians, since the context when a great part of the Venetian chronicles was written the relationship between the Venetian state and the Hungarian Kingdom were constantly tensed due to their claims over the Dalmatian coast.
The paper emphasizes the representation of Attila in accordance with 273 Venetian chronicles that cover the period of Attila’s invasion in Gaul and Italy. These texts deliver a variety of representation for this particular event, the character being present in two different major circumstances: either when narrating his confrontations in Gaul against Aetius (451), or when inserting the legend that develops on a larger scale his action in Italy (452) against the Christian forces led by King Janus of Padua, where the Eastern Christians from Constantinople would also be involved towards the end of the story. However, the Venetian chronicles are common in underlining the fierceful image of the Pagan king and emphasizing the clash between the two ‘worlds’.

In 1940, the occupying German authorities decided to transform two previously independent libraries: University and National libraries into Staatsbibliothek Warschau. Over time, the number of libraries whose collections were incorporated into this institution grew. Staatsbibliothek Warschau consisted of two branches: Branch I (corresponding to the University Library) and Branch II (formerly the National Library). In time, Branch III became the Special Collections of the SB located in the building of the liquidated Ordynacja Krasińskich Library at 9 Okólnik St. Already in early 1941, the commissary head of the SB-Wilhelm Witte-decided to change the organization of the SB's collections: he abandoned the principle of leaving the collections of individual branches in their previous form and decided to divide the collections thematically. Henceforth, Branch I was to collect foreign prints, Branch II-polonics, and Branch III-special collections. The result of this decision was a great action of moving collections between branches. The text presented here deals with the movement in 1941 of only one category of library holdings: manuscripts, and only those which, until the establishment of SB Branch I, constituted the collection of the University Library. The present description of the collection, as presented both in archival sources and printed publications, has been signifi cantly supplemented by the discovery of two extremely important sources: the fi rst is the transfer and receipt protocols, which show the signatures of the transferred collections and the dates of transfer of the various batches of the transferred collection (BUW

Th e report considers the problem of researching the most ancient Ukrainian manuscript heritage and the need for further
publication of Ukrainian manuscripts, accompanying them with thorough scientifi c codicological, paleographic, orthographic, and linguistic studies. Th e author emphasizes the need to expose the ideologized and, in fact, unscientifi c views of
Russian scientists on the cultural and linguistic heritage of Rus, which they spread in the world humanities, imposing a
false myth that until the 14th century Ukrainians, Russians and Belarusians allegedly shared a common Old Russian culture, Old Russian language and Old Russian writing, which Muscovy-Russia inherited. Refuting this pseudo-scientifi c
position remains one of the most urgent tasks for Ukrainian humanities scholars.

The presentation of a text to a reading public may provide evidence, either of an accommodation to the expectations of anticipated readers, or of new ways to read a text. How a text was received by a scribe, as well as how, why, and in what circumstances the text was then presented, remain among the underlying considerations in any study of manuscripts. The role of 'paratexts', that is, all those elements in text presentation other than the main text, in the extraordinary range of new text formats and new types of books created in late antiquity and the early middle ages, will be considered in this paper. I consider three categories of text: history, law and scripture. Continuities and innovations in relation to possible precedents and models will be explored, as well as how particular examples of extant manuscripts reflect scribes' imaginative engagement with the potential needs of new readers.

A number of ordinary Swedish parish chruches have medieval choir stalls. They have been explained as 'seats for visiting clergy', which is not convincing. An alterative interpretation is that they were built for lay choir singers. The article promotes this interpretation, drawing on the fact that an abundance of Medieval music manuscipts have been partially preserved in Sweden, re-used as wrappers for 16th century cadasters. Their number is far greater than what was needed for the cathedrals and monasteries of the realm. A problem with the coir singers hypothesis has been that a choir needed a conductor, and the local sexton was not qualified for that task. There are however some sources, spread from the 13th to the 16th century, mentioning chaplains or vicars serving alongside the rector at ordinary parish churches. These subordinate priests had all the qualifications for leading choirs and reading musical notation.

As Inquirições Gerais são um tema de grande relevância para o estudo da história política, social e económica em Portugal. Realizadas entre 1220 e 1343, ao longo dos reinados de Afonso II, Afonso III, Dinis e Afonso IV, tiveram propósitos diferentes consoante o rei que as ordenou. Foi sobretudo através desse processo de averiguação régia que ganhou corpo, de forma contundente, uma política executada a partir de um poder central, encetada precocemente na primeira metade do século XIII, e depois recuperada em força a partir de meados do mesmo século, tendo sido uma ferramenta importante para essa mesma política. Os resultados das Inquirições foram copiados, organizados e arquivados em códices, dos quais sobrevivem atualmente vinte e quatro. Estes manuscritos encontram-se entre os mais relevantes artefactos escritos na Idade Média portuguesa. Os livros de inquirições representam não só cópias da documentação original, mas foram também recompilados, reorganizados e mesmo alterados, contendo, desta forma, marcas de diversas refundições e de uma utilização sistemática ao longo dos séculos.

This paper offers three case studies on 'minitexts' added to eighthand ninth-century manuscripts and suggests that such informal interventions need to be recognized as part of a communication process between readers, scribes and their books in early medieval culture. The additions, comprising a vernacular poem, canon law, epistolary and homiletic material and kinglists suggest an association of ideas between main text and added minitexts. Yet they also expose a variety of sources for the minitexts, from a written record of oral memory, a summary of one aspect of a well-established text as in the case of Isidore of Seville's Etymologiae, and the reproduction of papal rulings which were part of another widely-circulated collection of canon law, to some interesting chronological summaries which appear to reflect a reader's engagement with the entire codex in which the minitext was inserted. They indicate too how much we can learn in general about early medieval intellectual culture from pursuing both the engagements with knowledge represented in readers' additions to their manuscripts, and the questions they raise.

The sixth-century codex Verona, Biblioteca capitolare, XXII (20) off ers an instructive case study for an understanding of the resources available to the clerical community in Verona in the early Middle Ages, as well as for the history of the transmission of the historical texts the codex contains. The palaeography and codicology of the codex as well as its contents, especially Jerome-Gennadius, De viris illustribus, are set alongside the historical, political, and intellectual context in which the codex was writt en and in which it continued to be used well into the ninth century.

La météorologie ancienne et médiévale se distingue de son équivalent contemporain par un domaine d’études autrement plus vaste, s’étendant bien au-delà des phénomènes atmosphériques. Le premier livre des Météorologiques d’Aristote aborde en effet des sujets aussi divers que l’action de la sphère céleste sur la région terrestre, les liens entre mouvement, lumière et production de chaleur, les rapports quantitatifs entre les quatre éléments, la formation des comètes et de la Voie lactée, l’origine et le mouvement des fleuves, les variations périodiques dans la répartition entre mers et terres sèches. Fondée sur l’analyse d’une grande quantité de textes inédits, et prenant la forme d’un voyage de la Lune à la Terre, la présente étude explore les débats que ces sujets ont suscités chez les maîtres scolastiques qui, de la fin du XIIe au milieu du XVe siècle, se sont confrontés au texte aristotélicien dans le cadre de leur enseignement à la Faculté des arts.

Through the analysis of four of the fourteen Isidorian citations from the Etymologiae found in the Ars Bernensis, this paper aims to define to which of the three families of the encyclopaedia the model used by the compiler of the Ars belongs. Accepting Holtz’s hypothesis that locates the origin of the Ars in Bobbio, we will try to shed light on the presence of the Etymologiae in that milieu at the end of the eighth century.

The article presents a manuscript containing works by Lactantius, which was copied in Sulmona in 1467 and since 1980s has been kept in the collection of the Library of the Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz. To this date, the manuscript has been known in Polish literature only from a short mention in a guide to Polish manuscript collections and has not been a subject of scholarly interest of Polish researchers. In the article I attempt to retrace the fate of the codex, tracing it back to the information linking the manuscript to the history of the book and collections of Sulmona. The manuscript becomes an opportunity to outline the transmission of Lactantius' works in medieval Poland and to make the fi rst step in inquiring their reception.

This article identifies annotations on a 1547 Venice edition of Sefer ha-Kuzari as the work of Italian-Jewish scholar Azariah de' Rossi (1511-1578), based on paleographic comparison with his verified notes on Maimonides' Guide for the Perplexed. The annotations include translation corrections, interpretative notes, and quotations from various commentators. De' Rossi's corrections influenced Rabbi Judah Moscato's canonical Kol Yehudah commentary on the Kuzari. This discovery illuminates de' Rossi's contribution to Jewish philosophical scholarship during the Renaissance and provides valuable insights into the textual evolution of the Kuzari's Hebrew translation, particularly regarding his critical approach to Judah ibn Tibbon's translation methodology.

The paper discusses the compilatory and narrative techniques of an Old Hungarian passion narrative copied into a voluminous manuscript (Érsekújvári Codex, Budapest, Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, K45) compiled in the Domincan convent on the Island of the Hares (today Margaret Island, Budapest) in 1529-1531 by Sister Márta Sövényházi and her helpers. This history of the passion was compiled from Gospel texts, biblical glosses perhaps based on Nicolaus de Lyra and scences probably going back to the Meditationes vitae Christi, as well as some unknown sources. Márta Sövényházi illustrated the long ‘devotional passion’ with several handmade and coloured copies of woodcuts.

The collection of dance music manuscripts from the late 18 th and early 19 th century by Jiří Hartl is unique among European sources in terms of its quality and size . Jiří Hartl (1781 -1849), born in northern Bohemia into a family of village teachers, was a skilled musician, playing the violin, clarinet, organ and bassoon . From 1803 -1846 Hartl had a teaching post in Stará Paka and, as was typical of village teachers, was responsible for the local organ, establishing a tradition of figural music . His commitments included leading a dance band which accompanied various urban and rural dance events . This is evidenced by the collection, which contains 840 dance instrumental tunes, most of them recorded in the period 1810 -1820 . The records are those of the first violin with instrumentation glosses, solo contributions of other instruments, and the names of most of the dances . The collection also contains verbal notes which help to reconstruct the composition of Hartl's band (at least two violins, normally a viola, always a double bass, 1 -2 clarinets and a trumpet, sometimes a flute and bassoon) .
