En mai 1632, le Cardinal-Infant Ferdinand s'apprête à prendre ses fonctions de vice-roi et de capitaine général de Catalogne. Première étape d'un long périple qui le mènera jusqu'aux Pays-Bas espagnols, son séjour à Barcelone est conçu par Philippe IV comme une période de formation politique. Comme tout représentant du roi, Don Fernando reçoit des instructions générales et particulières, que Quintín Aldea Vaquero édite au début des années 2000. Mais il en existe une autre que l'historien n’a pu localiser : une instruction secrète que Philippe IV aurait délivrée à son frère au monastère de Montserrat, lieu de son dernier adieu. L'objectif de cet article est de proposer une édition de cette instruction, en soulignant son importance politique pour Philippe IV et ses ministres.

What happens when those living alongside historical monuments—churchgoers, farmers, workers, custodians, local officials, non-human entities—see these sites as theirs? Through what sources and scholarly approaches can we recover their voices and their role in the state-led activities of restoration and preservation of architectural monuments?

This conference explores the debates, conflicts and role of local communities in the heritage politics starting from the mid-19th century and focusing especially but not exclusively on Central and Eastern Europe. It also seeks to understand the role of non-human actors, such as plants, animals, natural formations, weather and the different, more-than-human perspectives, they bring to the process of heritage making. The conference is based on the premise that local communities played an unrecognized role in official heritage policies, through resistance, negotiations, adaptations, and the use of traditions and knowledge. Architects and commissions frequently relied on the knowledge and testimonies of these communities, acted in accordance with their desires and employed them on works of restoration or preservation. At the same time there was often a sense of struggle over the heritage. For example, communities opposed the modifications to their monuments while architects and state institutions had to also prevent transformations, replacements or demolition by the locals. 

The institutions, actors and ideologies underpinning the process of heritage building have been thoroughly analysed in groundbreaking studies (Jukka Jokilehto, Miles Glendinning, Brenda Schildgen) as well as more recent works that focus on Central and Eastern Europe (Maria Couroucli and Tchavdar Marinov, Dragan Damjanović and Aleksander Łupienko, Maximilian Hartmuth and Ayse Dilsiz Hartmuth). They have revealed a wealth of case studies that explain how national ideologies shaped a specific vision of the past with the help of historical monuments. These are seen as “living witnesses” of the past, as states the Venice International Charter of 1964, still a reference in the management of architectural heritage today.
 
However, in the processes of restoration and preservation, other types of “living witnesses” were silenced, namely the local communities and non-human entities. They have been legally and symbolically dispossessed of their monuments, which were placed in the custody of the state. Legitimized by national narratives, “heritage experts” emerged, holding the “authorized heritage discourse” as Laurajane Smith famously noted.

This conference seeks to balance the disproportionate attention that state actors and elites have received and analyse what has been the role as well as the influence on those for whom the monuments were part of their daily lives. 
Proposals for 20-minute papers are invited on topics such as:
- Attitudes, reactions, reflections on the state-led restoration activities from the local communities as well as their influential role in the process.
- Grassroots preservation practices. How local communities took care of their historical buildings? 
- Local notions of “architectural heritage”. Beyond the dichotomy “bad taste” of locals and the “expertise” of professionals, how did the local population see historical architecture?
- How can we configure a more-than-human perspective on the heritage-making process? What was the role of non-human actors such as insects, rivers, snow, trees, etc.?
- Marginalised communities, minorities, alternative official voices, including responses to quasi-colonial attitudes of the elites of Central and Eastern Europe.
- Discussion of sources. How can we study local voices and what kind of sources did they produce?
- Displaced and destroyed heritage. Responses to the disappearance of the heritage through decay, destruction or relocation to ethnographic museums or other sites.
- Definitions and inquiries into notions of heritage, patrimony, possession, ownership, communities, etc.

The deadline for submission of abstracts of up to 300 words including a short biography is 22 April. Family history remains integral to historiography, with genealogy being one approach to its study. Markus Friedrich's monograph fits within this context. He examines the Nuremberg patrician Jakob Wilhelm Imhoff (1651-1728), whom he analyses from a history of knowledge perspective. He explores how Imhoff created and visualised genealogical knowledge, how it illuminated individual noble histories and the nobility as a social estate, and its significance in Europe's cultural, social and political history circa 1700. At the outset, it should be emphasised that the author masterfully succeeds in bringing out the complexity of genealogical knowledge production and its interconnection with European history. Friedrich's point of departure is the War of the Spanish Succession, which broke out following the death of Charles II, who left no male heirs. This »dynastic disaster« (3) and the ensuing genealogical debates in Madrid profoundly influenced Imhoff. In this light, the author traces the development of genealogy up to 1700. Chapter 2 situates the genealogist in his socio-cultural environment. Circa 1700 the imperial city of Nuremberg was a hub of literary production. The approximately 43 patrician families of the city served as »conduits of knowledge« (67). Imhoff's upbringing, family status, networks and access to resources enabled his largely autonomous genealogical research. At the same time, his membership in the patriciate provided him access to the nobility. Chapter 3 illustrates, therefore, Imhoff's collaboration with the nobility as his »prime source of knowledge« (77), both within and beyond Nuremberg. It becomes clear that his work contributed to consolidating individual dynastic identities and the nobility as a coherent estate. Chapter 4 shifts focus to Imhoff's extensive network, which included city councillors, diplomats, historians, genealogists, booksellers and librarians from the Holy Roman Empire, France, Florence, and Naples. Imhoff obtained his information from various »places of knowledge« (142), ranging from universities to council chambers, and synthesised it. Hence, Chapter 5 is devoted to his concrete working practices and how he processed genealogical information into »comprehensive narratives and visual representations« (171). In meticulous detail, the author traces how Imhoff located, organised, and visualised genealogical information, particularly through family trees and diagrams. Finally, Friedrich examines the material practices of the Nuremberg genealogist, such as printing, cutting, and writing

Writing about a Scottish Calvinist diplomatic network at the centre of some of Lutheran Sweden's most important diplomatic endeavours in the early seventeenth century may seem a niche subject at best. After all, it remains a commonly held belief that it was against the law to be anything other than a Lutheran to live and work in Sweden in the era of Sigismund Vasa (reigned 1593-1599), Karl IX (reigned 1604-1611), or Gustav II Adolf (reigned 1611-1632). As a fully Lutheran confessional state, the entrusting of sensitive diplomatic duties to Calvinist diplomats, ambassadors, clergymen, and spies would somehow seem anomalous. It was, of course, quite normal to welcome ambassadors and political leaders of other faiths into the Swedish realmhow else could Sweden conduct any diplomatic business with non-Lutheran states otherwise? Indeed, as Daniel Riches has observed in a Swedish context, the Northern European diplomatic class 'transcended the narrow boundaries of state, dynasty and confession.' 1 It is certainly incontestable that a particular cohort of Scottish Calvinists operated at the heart of the Swedish diplomatic machine in the time period being considered. Through their diplomatic activities, they in turn were able to override any objection to the retention of their confession of faith by the Swedish Church, or any organ of government. To fully comprehend the implications of thisand their importance in Swedish diplomacywe must first glance at the background to the Swedish Reformation.

M. de St. Germain, a mysterious adviser to the Royal Family, warned them of impending doom but was dismissed by M. de Maurepas. Despite the Queen’s efforts to understand the situation, the Court’s frivolity and the growing hatred towards them escalated. A prophetic poem, attributed to St. Germain, foretold the downfall of the monarchy and the rise of a new era, leaving the Queen deeply troubled and uncertain about the future.

Madame d’Adhémar recounts a dire warning from the Comte de St. Germain to Queen Marie Antoinette about the impending proscription of the Polignacs and other Royalists. Despite the Queen’s efforts to protect them, the Duchess of Polignac and her associates were doomed. The Comte de St. Germain, believed to be dead, reappears, offering his protection to Madame d’Adhémar and predicting the downfall of the monarchy.

The Countess d’Adhémar recounts a meeting with the Comte de St. Germain in a church. He predicts the downfall of the Bourbon monarchy, the French Revolution, and the Queen’s death. Despite his warnings, the Countess is hesitant to inform the Queen and later sees him again at pivotal moments in French history.

The Comte de St. Germain’s predictions about France’s future, made over a century ago, have proven accurate, highlighting the downfall of the Bourbons and the nation’s moral decay.

El presente artículo tiene por objeto poner de manifiesto la trayectoria vital de uno de los personajes más relevantes en la última resistencia de Barcelona a las tropas borbónicas de Felipe V el 11 de septiembre de 1714, poniendo de manifiesto los vaivenes y cambios de posicionamiento de los distintos individuos durante el conflicto sucesorio y a qué causas se debieron. Las oscilaciones durante el desarrollo de la guerra de Sucesión española, y su incierto desenlace para sus partícipes, influyó de manera
directa en el posicionamiento que adoptaron durante la contienda algunos de los individuos protagonistas como D. Antonio Castillo y Chirino, quien fue modulando su trayectoria vital desde una apasionada defensa de la figura de Felipe V hasta llegar a abrazar el austracismo de una forma radical hasta las últimas consecuencias. Intentaremos establecer los principales hitos de su trayectoria vital, las distintas causas que podrían explicar su viraje vital y su relación del devenir de los acontecimientos
bélicos.

Ottoman buildings, regardless of their great historical and identity
significance, belong to a poorly researched part of the architectural
heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Little care was taken of
them, so many of them fell into disrepair. Many valuable sacral
and secular buildings have disappeared, among them numerous
mosques, masjids, tekkes, madrasas, turbets, cemeteries, but
also inns, hammams, towers, countless valuable houses, bazaar
ensembles, etc.
Apart from a few exceptions, the situation with stone bridges is
particularly critical. This is the result of their inability to meet
contemporary, above all, needs of modern traffic. This resulted
in a decrease in utilitarian significance and the need for their
indispensable retention in function, which paved the way for their
gradual disappearance.
Not much has been written about Ottoman bridges. However, it
is a fact that there is a lot of material about the Old Bridge in
Mostar and the Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge on
the Drina in Višegrad. These constructions are currently in good
condition, just like the recently renovated Šeher-ćehaja and Latin
Bridge in Sarajevo, Arslanagića Bridge in Trebinje, Bridge in
Konjic, Bridge on Žepa...
Kozija Bridge in the upper reaches of the Miljacka River, with a
construction comparable to Mostar’s Old Bridge, and the “Roman
Bridge” in Plandište near Sarajevo, although they were filmed
on several occasions and restored on a modest scale, detailed
attention was bypassed. The lack of care for the majority of old
Ottoman stone bridges results in the fact that a large part of even
the professional public is unaware that the Grand Vizier Rustem
Pasha Opuković Bridge on Ilidža near Sarajevo was longer and
had a greater number of arches than Mehmed Pasha Sokolović
Bridge in Višegrad, that Danijal Pasha Bridge on the Buna near
Mostar with its 14 arches was even more impressive, but that those
bridges, like many others, no longer exist. Danijal Pasha Bridge
was not nearly so damaged by the war that its reconstruction was
not feasible and had to be removed. The demolition of several
arches by combat units of the German Wehrmacht was not done
to destroy the architectural heritage of a nation, but to cut off
strategic wartime communications. The restoration of Danijal
Pasha, as well as Rustem Pasha Bridge, was very possible. With
their complete removal, it was necessary to wait and give both the
restorers of the architectural heritage and the state time to react, it
was necessary to act in the same way as was done with the Bridge
in Konjic.
Šeher-ćehaja and Latin Bridge were rebuilt at the end of the 20th
and the beginning of the 21st century in the forms they had before
the lateral extensions were added. On that occasion, it was possible
to act differently and do a lot more, which is shown in this book.
The question is, however, whether there were sufficient financial
resources for such a thing in the circumstances at the time.
Šeher-ćehaja Bridge was originally a symmetrical five-arched
bridge, but more simply proportioned than the other two Ottoman
stone bridges in the center of Sarajevo. In its design, the application
of the golden ratio and small whole numbers was omitted, but thesymmetrical composition was retained. The research also revealed
that during the construction of the eastern end of the left coastal
wall of the Miljacka, interventions unknown to this day took place,
due to which the bridge was reshaped.
Similar to the previous one, the research of the Emperor Old
Bridge resulted in new, hitherto unknown facts. They indicate that
the architect incorporated a lot of sophisticated knowledge about
proportions and proportioning into his creation, so it possessed
many “hidden” qualities. This is why the damage caused by its
removal is greater than was thought until recently. The question
of the name was additionally clarified, since the bridge built in
1897 took the name of the bridge that was demolished in 1896. In
order to make a nomenclature difference between them, the suffix
Nova (New) was added to the first, where it was necessary for
clarification, and to the second, Stara (Old) just as it was done and
is done in the people when a more detailed discussion about the
Emperor Bridge is started.
The Latin Bridge is an example of the architectural heritage
that time, stormy historical events that were the epicenter and
insufficient scientific, professional and social care significantly
changed and in one moment almost pushed it into extinction. A
small additional movement of Appel Quai towards the middle of
Miljacka compared to the one carried out in 1897 could have had
just as disastrous consequences as for the Emperor Bridge. There
were even thoughts that went in the direction of removing the
Latin Bridge, and it was even drawn on some plans. Fortunately,
it seems that it was at the conceptual level, so it was not realized.
In the end, the Latin Bridge escaped the Emperor Bridge fate. This
part of the fate of the Latin Bridge was not known at all until now,
so it is not mentioned in professional and scientific circles.
The significance, position, characteristics and influence that
Sarajevo’s Ottoman stone bridges had on the environment require
that they be again put in the focus of scientific interest, and that
additional data and facts be learned about them. The research on
them, carried out in this book, was done in detail, but to the extent
that different circumstances allowed or dictated. The analytical
part related to the dimensions, module, modular coordination and
proportions, but also the thought and visual integrity of the bridge,
has never been carried out to this level and in this way. The research
ended with new findings, and above all with the conclusion that
the Latin and Emperor Bridges were not only dimensioned, but
were also sophisticatedly proportioned constructions, which
both practically and theoretically formed a refined architectural
composition. It was also concluded that they were originally
symmetrical five-arched bridges, which was confirmed by
appropriate graphic and pictorial evidence.
All the mentioned features of Sarajevo’s Ottoman stone bridges,
especially those related to their significance as the architectural
heritage of Ottoman Bosnia and its peoples, on the one hand, as well
as to the past and present memory of the place and their connection,
on the other hand, impose the restoration of these world-class of
well-known and extremely important historical buildings from the
Ottoman era, with an idea and method that have not been often
applied in the renovation practice in our country until now.
There are several important results of the research carried out in this book.
First of all, it was shown by photography, and proved and confirmed
by modular analysis, that the Latin Bridge was originally a fivearched,
consequently symmetrical bridge. The same was proven
for the Emperor and Šeher-ćehaja Bridges.
It is shown that as such - as a five-arched - Latin Bridge was
designed based on the golden ratio. The bridge as a whole and its
individual parts were proportioned with it, as well as with small
whole numbers. The result was an extraordinary architectural
composition, which exuded the intellectual, visual and aesthetic
integrity demonstrated by the architect.
The Emperor Bridge is proportioned in an almost identical way to
the Latin one, and both are, by the application of the golden ratio,
in the group that also includes the Bridge of Grand Vizier Mehmed
Pasha Sokolović. The Emperor Bridge and the bridge in Višegrad
not only share an asymmetric position of the tarikh (inscription),
but also the exact determination of its position based on the golden
ratio.
The so far unknown fact that the Latin and Emperor Bridge, as
well as the Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge, are
proportioned with the golden ratio is of exceptional scientific
importance. It entails numerous implications and opens up a
wide field for further research of different types, especially of the
Emperor, but also of the Grand Vizier Bridge. It is to be hoped that
these investigations will be carried out in the future and that new
knowledge about both, but also about the Latin and Šeher-ćehaja
Bridge, will further enrich the scientific funds.

During the Spring of Nations in the lands of the Crown of St. Stefan (1848-1849) traditional ties of friendship, with the possibility of a military confrontation occurring with one, two invaders attracted a large crowd of Polish volunteers for the formation of the Hungarian honveds. About 4,000 Poles were fighting directly in the ranks of the revolutionary army, and enrolled to  the national legions under the command of Generals Joseph Wysocki alongside the Transylvanian Army Fieldmarshal Joseph Bem. Among them, about 20 individuals who will be later on commanders of the guerrilla armed troops of the January Uprising (1863-1864). For this reason, it is worth recalling the experience that the military group acquired during the battles for the Hungarian Plain, Slovakia, Bukovina, Moldavia, Banat, Backa and Transylvania.

Фундаментальне дослідження з історії державної служби в Україні підготовлене в рамках наукового проекту, що реалізується на замовлення Центру адаптації державної служби до стандартів Європейського Союзу коштом державного бюджету України під керівництвом Головного управління державної служби України. Реалізація проекту приурочена до 90-річчя запровадження державної служби в Україні та здійснюється на виконання розпорядження Кабінету Міністрів України «Про відзначення 90-річчя запровадження державної служби» від 11 червня 2008 року №817 р. В рамках цього проекту у 2008 р. були видані «Нариси історії державної служби в Україні» (київське видавництво «Ніка-Центр», 536 с.).

Ragač, Radoslav. Archív Komposesorátu rodu Jesenský

príspevok opisuje cennú akvizíciu Slovenského národného archívu, ktorú získal ako depozit od obce Turčianske Jaseno. Ide o pomerne dobre zachovaný archív Komposesorátu rodu Jesenský z Horného Jasena, s časovým rozsahom od 15. storočia až do prvej polovice 20. storočia. Väčšinou ide o majetkovo-právnu agendu týkajúcu sa spoločnej správy rodových majetkov v okolí Horného Jasena. Cennou súčasťou uvedeného súboru je aj niekoľko rukopisných máp. Za uvedenú akvizíciu získal Slovenský národný archív cenu revue Pamiatky a múzeá.

Дискусії між українськими й польськими політиками про національний характер і майбутнє Східної Галичини на початку ХХ ст. набули особливої гостроти у зв’язку зі стрімкими модернізаційними змінами суспільства, реформуванням політичної системи. Обстоюючи власну стратегію розвитку Галичини,
українці й поляки вдавалися як до випробуваних часом аргументів, так і шукали нових. Навіть в ідеології новітніх політичних рухів чітко простежуються історичні стереотипи щодо іншої нації в краю. Одночасне втягнення території Східної Галичини в орбіту як польського, так і українського державотворення
зумовило перехід міжнаціонального суперництва в регіоні у стадію відкритого політичного конфлікту. Однак у міжнаціональних полеміках також відчутне й психологічне підґрунтя: почуття образи за нехтування інтересами власної сторони, невизнання її заслуг та успіхів тощо. Назагал історико-правовим аргументам поляків українці протиставляли право народу на самовизначення, водночас
обидві сторони діяли й на полі суперника: українці шукали аргументи в історії, поляки відстоювали непорушність національних позицій польського населення в Східній Галичині тощо. Специфікою періоду, що досліджується, було те, що в силу історичних обставин прикордонна територія, традиційні функції якої полягали в обороні “своїх” інтересів перед “чужими”, мусила відігравати роль
центру як загальнопольського, так і загальноукраїнського національних рухів. Це збільшувало число чинників впливу на міжнаціональні відносини в Галичині й посилювало внутрішньополітичну напругу. Спираючись на закріплені в австрійській конституції ліберально-демократичні свободи, українці претендували отримати в Східній Галичині політичну владу, що в психології поляків викликало відчуття втрати здобутих позицій. Аналіз міжнаціональних дискусій доводить тісну взаємозалежність українського й польського національних рухів на етапі модерного націотворення, адже українці й поляки одночасно становили одні для інших загрозу для національних інтересів, об’єкт експансії та взірець для наслідування. Творячи власну версію політичного майбутнього Східної Галичини, вони, природно, виходили з власних національних інтересів, однак питання, що робити при
цьому з іншою нацією у краю, залишалося відкритим.

The twelve silver-gilt cups known as the Aldobrandini Tazze-magnificent examples of 16th-century European goldsmithing in size, design, and quality of execution - feature figures and scenes from Roman historian Suetonius's classic work The Twelve Caesars, all rendered in minute, intricate relief. Dispersed in the 1860s, the tazze were reunited in 2014 for the first time since the 19th century, each piece newly photographed to highlight the dazzling detail and show the works as they were originally made. The accompanying essays, written by a team of scholars from around the world, explore the persistent questions that swirl around these unique silver dishes, including where, when, and for whom they were originally made, what they were used for, and why the set was separated and scattered.

Die deutsche Sozialdemokratie vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg sah sich eindeutig als Gegnerin des Antisemitismus. Doch weil sie ihn nicht verstand, sah sie auch im »Philosemitismus« ein Problem. Die deutsche Sozialdemokratie war vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg eine entschlossene Gegnerin des Antisemitismus oder, genauer gesagt, dessen, was sie für Antisemitismus hielt. Viele würden die Sache mit dieser Feststellung gerne auf sich beruhen lassen.

У овом раду ауторка анализира карикатуре које су у вријеме трајања Првог балканског рата објављиване у бечким сатиричним листовима Ди Мускете (Die Muskete), Кикерики (Kikeriki) и Винер Карикатурен (Wiener Caricaturen). Примарни циљ рада био је показати кроз испитивање садржаја, симболике, као и вербалних и невербалних порука појединачних карикатура, да ли се може уочити образац негативних предрасуда, односно стереотипног типизирања различитих личности и догађаја Првог балканског рата из угла бечке сатиричне штампе. Поред анализе алегоријских предрасуда о члановима Балканског савеза, посебна пажња у овом раду је дата испитивању третирања појмова панславизма и уопште руског утицаја на балканска дешавања, затим акутном проблему одржања Османског царства, као и питању Албаније. Настојали смо утврдити да ли су карикатуре само биле гласило јавности или су пак служиле за моделирање јавнога мњења као пропагандно средство. Уочили смо да, иако су посматране новине имале различиту уредничку структуру и читалачку публику, у њиховим карикатурама о Првом балканском рату доминирао је наратив присутан и у аустроугарској официјелној спољној политици, који се, као што смо показали, огледао у понижавању чланица Балканског савеза, истицању тежње да се Османско царство одржи у животу, те потенцирању страха од панславизма и неминовности стварања албанске државе под аустроугарским протекторатом. Стереотипно типизирање чланица Балканског савеза (њихових владара и народа) не само да је појачавало већ постојеће негативне предрасуде у аустроугарском јавном мњењу, него је стварало и нове. У том смислу, карикатуре су имале сугестивну и пропагандну улогу.

Життя і діяльність Євгена Олесницького відображають вузлові моменти політичної історії українців Галичини кінця ХІХ — початку ХХ ст. На початку ХХ ст. він належав до найвпливовіших українських політиків Галичини . Важко знайти якусь актуальну для тогочасних галицьких українців справу, чи то в політичній, чи в економічній, чи в культурній площині, до якої не був би причетним Є. Олесницький ; відшукати скільки-небудь помітну політичну фігуру, з якою він би не налагодив власні взаємини. Так само складно писати політичну біографію Євгена Олесницького , не розуміючи глибшого контексту подій, у яких він брав участь, насамперед механізмів українсько-польської взаємодії на етапі модерного націотворення, ролі австрійського конституціоналізму та бюрократії в модернізації галицького суспільства, неоднозначного переплетення національно-політичних орієнтацій у середовищі галицьких українців, мотивації, яка щоразу визначала вибір ними тієї чи іншої стратегії і тактики політичної діяльності.

Luca Giordano and the frescoes of the sacristy of the Cathedral of Toledo Leticia de Frutos (Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte) Resumen: Con este artículo quisiera proponer una nueva interpretación contextualizada a la decoración al fresco de la sacristía de la catedral de Toledo por parte de Luca Giordano. Los últimos años del reinado de Carlos II, marcados por la fragilidad de su salud y el temor a una sucesión no resuelta, la existencia de facciones y sobre todo, los deseos del cardenal Portocarrero, don Luis Fernández de Portocarrero (1635-1709), de controlar en la medida de lo posible al voluntad del rey, nos permiten proponer una interpretación más contextualizada de un encargo a un pintor del rey llamado de Italia, Luca Giordano, que aún trabajaba en la decoración del Buen Retiro, en un espacio no dependiente de la Corona: los frescos de la sacristía de la catedral de Toledo. ¿A qué respondía esta decisión? ¿Por qué emplear al pintor de cámara del rey en un espacio ajeno al ceremonial regio? ¿A qué se debía este encargo en la catedral y, además en Toledo?

This paper centres around three ceremonial swords made by the Tyrolean swordsmith Hans Sumersperger. When caught by light, the seemingly blackened surfaces of the swords’ facetted blades ignite with an iridescent sheen that contrasts brilliantly with their conspicuous mercury-gilded detail. Besides an appealing aesthetical result, such “colouring” oxidisation notably also occurred as a natural “side-product” of fire-gilding and while heat-treating steel for an increased material hardness (tempering). By articulating these processual slippages, this paper expounds these techniques in the context of contemporary ideals of material perfecting and technical narratives of hardness contextualising their significance.

The representatives of the Galician political elite in Lviv at the beginning of the XXth century: between the official and private space

The concentration in the city of the brightest politicians and statesmen was
consequence of Lviv status as the capital of the Austrian province of Galicia. Using the opportunities of job in the government institutions they simultaneously acted as leaders of national movements. The emphasis on national interests was the prerequisite of successful political career at that time. The growth of the Polish-Ukrainian contradictions significantly hindered the formation of the political elite of the province as a whole.There was an attempt in the article to compare the Polish and Ukrainian political leaders at that time, taking into account not only their political views and activities, but also private space, family and friendly environment, and related life strategies on the basis of Oleksandr Barvinskyi, Michał Bobrzyński, Stanisław Głąbiński, Włodzimierz Kozłowski, Kost Levyckyi, Yevhen Olesnyckyi, Yevhen Petrushevych,Andrzej Potocki biographies. This comparison which shows the closeness of national spaces, enables a better understanding why compromises between the Ukrainian and Polish politics seemed so unattainable in that period. National leaders were focused on the search of a lost homeland, which desired to gain. The political elites of Lviv had to concede the capital championship, regardles Lviv was among Polish or Ukrainian cities. The Austrian project of Lviv as a cosmopolitan capital lost national versions asthe provincial political elite wasn’t interested in itsimplementation

From “Darwinianischen Evolutionslehre” to “Geisteswissenschaft”: Max Dvořák and the positivistic view of Alois Riegl.
In his latest lectures on Italian art, Max Dvořák described the positivism of the previous generation of art historians as the work of a “Botaniker.” In his view, historians such as Alois Riegl had “broken down the work of art as a plant is broken down in botany,” they “organized it into groups and circles, compared it materially with one another, and traced the forms as far back as possible” (Dvořák 1919-20): making art history a type of botany.

In 2012 a controversy arose around one of the plays of the Royal Shakespeare Company's new season. The play, entitled The Orphan of Zhao, was a 'new adaptation/translation' by James Fenton of thirteenth-century playwright Ji Junxiang's work Zhao shi gu er [The Orphan of the House of Zhao]. The production, directed by Gregory Doran, was the cause of much contention and criticism. One of the issues was the lack of diversity in casting. Indeed, only three East Asian actors were cast in the play (there were 17 roles), and the majority of non-white actors were cast in secondary, subordinate, silent or non-human roles (maid, guards, and a dog). Another problem was the essentialised representation of historical 'China', which in many ways replicated the Western-constructed vision of Ancient China. Such debates are not confined to Europe. Only three months previously La Jolla Playhouse's production of an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Nightingale, written by Steven Sater and directed by Moisés Kaufman was set in a supposedly "mythical China" (their words) inspired by the nineteenth-century Danish writer's fairy tale. NEW TACTICS OF UKRAINIAN DELEGATION IN GALICIAN DIET THE EARLY 20th CENTURY
The article analyzes the discussions around the parliamentary struggle in Galicia in the early 20th century. The loud obstruction by Ukrainian deputies in the Galician Diet, which erupted in 1910 during debates over a new electoral law, was the result of Ukrainian politicians’ search for new and more effective methods to influence political decisions. The article argued that the obstruction, borrowed from the experience of the Czech-German opposition, was directed against the domination of the Polish factor in the Galician autonomy. The aggravation tactics of political struggle were consistent with the public sentiments of Galician Ukrainians, who were observing further radicalization. The last years of Andrzej Potocki’s tenure as governor of Galicia were characterized
by intensifying Ukrainian-Polish tensions, largely driven by electoral reforms in the Austrian Parliament and increasing mass protests. Despite these tensions, Potocki persisted in attempting to contain the Ukrainian movement through administrative and political pressure.
This tactic climaxed to his support of Russophiles over the candidates from Ukrainian parties in the elections to the Galician Diet in 1908 in response to the negotiations between Ukrainian parliament members and the Austrian government. The disturbance caused by such a step
not only among the Ukrainian public, but also among the ruling circles of Austria-Hungary and Cracow conservatives, forced the governor to recognize his fallacy and initiate a political agreement with Ukrainian politicians represented by Eugene Olesnytskyi that was meant to be
like a «new era» in 1890 and had high chances of influencing the political life in Galicia, but was not implemented because of Potocki’s assassination committed. The article argued that this murder was the culmination of the Ukrainian-Polish collision in Galicia and forced ones to think about ways of normalizing the international relations. Polish Galician politicians, who had balanced service to the Habsburg Monarchy
with the defense of Polish national interests, were compelled to explore solutions to the «Ukrainian issue». Through an analysis of the events on the eve of obstruction, a number of private circumstances and motives involved in it politicians, as well as relationships between them, the article argued that the decision was taken Ukrainian moderately liberal leaders to start obstruction and caused no objections heads of administration and

U ovom su radu objedinjeni životopisi autora prvih povjesnica o Vojnoj krajini, čiji radovi čine nezaobilaznu „nultu točku” istraživanja osobito u povijesnoj znanosti, ali i u širim društveno-humanističkim znanostima. Rekonstrukcija njihovih života napravljena je na temelju dosad objavljenih podataka u sekundarnoj literaturi, a praznine u njihovim biografijama pokušavalo se, gdje je to bilo moguće, popunjavati pomoću relevantnih mjesečnih vojnih popisa, prateće dokumentacije tih popisa i matičnih knjiga. Najviše su pritom pomogle potvrde o premještaju, koje osim osnovnih podataka o osobnom životu nude i vrlo detaljan pregled napredovanja u profesionalnoj karijeri. Istim je spisima bilo moguće ispraviti i neke pogreške u njihovim objavljenim životopisima koje su se dosad provlačile.

A házasság, amelyet a Habsburg-család beleegyezése nélkül kötött egy rangon aluli polgári származású nővel, komoly visszhangot váltott ki a sajtóban és a politikai elit köreiben. Az elemzés középpontjában a korabeli magyar és nemzetközi sajtóban megjelenő diskurzusok állnak, amelyek a főherceg döntését legitimista és szabad királyválasztó szempontból egyaránt értékelték. A tanulmány bemutatja a Habsburg-ház házassági törvényeit, a család reakcióit, valamint azt, hogy az ügy milyen hatással volt Albrecht társadalmi és politikai pozíciójára.

ANDRZEJ POTOCKI: THE BIOGRAPHY OF THE POLITICIAN
IN THE CONTEXT OF UKRAINIAN-POLISH RELATIONS
Part II:The Galician governor

The article explores the main policies of A. Potocki on the Ukrainian question during his tenure as the governor of Galicia (1903–1908), consideres the factors, which caused the intensification of Ukrainian-Polish confrontation in Galicia and led to the murder of A. Potocki. Potocki’s governorship focused on harmonization of Polish andAustrian national interests, the increase of Polish role within the state as a precondition for the extension of self-governance rights in Galicia, and the establishment of a clear administrative system. In order to increase Vienna’s confidence A. Potocki tried to keep all social movements,
which challenged the stability in the province, under a strict control, including both the leftists and the Ukrainian national movement. In his role as a governor, A. Potocki had little experience in the Ukrainian aspects and was guided by typical stereotypes of Polish
aristocrats, which led him to underestimating the significance of the Ukrainian movement. His repeated instructions for the officials to provide unbiased and equal treatment to all social and ethnic groups did not prevent A. Potocki from restraining the growth of any political influences of Ukrainians; he sometimes fell under the influence of Polish EastGalicia conservatives and national democrats who were negative about Ukrainians and Poles’ coming to terms, and kept minimum contact with Ukrainian politicians. The last years of his tenure were marked with aggravation of Ukrainian-Polish struggle related to the reform of electoral law by the Austrian Parliament, and intensification of mass protest
actions. In several areas of Eastern Galicia the collision led to casualties among the Ukrainian population, the blame for which Ukrainian journalism put on the Galician governor. However, A. Potocki continued his attempts to keep the Ukrainian movement under control by means
of administrative and political pressure. This tactic climaxed to his support of Russophiles over the candidates from Ukrainian parties in the elections to the Galician Diet in 1908 in response to the negotiations between Ukrainian parliament members and the Austrian government. ANDRZEJ POTOCKI: THE BIOGRAPHY OF THE POLITICIAN
IN THE CONTEXT OF UKRAINIAN-POLISH RELATIONS
Part I: Formation of a political career

The article addresses the formation of the Polish aristocrat Andrzej Potocki (1861–1908) as a Galician politician who combined his state service to the Gabsburg monarchy with defending Polish national interests and looking for the ways of settling a Ukrainian issue. In chronological terms the article covers the period till 1903, when Andrzej Potocki was appointed a Vicegerent of Galicia. The political views of Andrzej Potocki had been formulated under the ideology of Krakowian conservatism. There were a number of additional factors that determined Andrzej Potocki’s opinions on the Ukrainian issue. These were his family relations with Polish nobility from the Right-bank Ukraine, the idealization of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth prevalent in the noble circles, the patriarchal conflictless relations between Polish landowners and Ukrainian peasants, and also his family and friendly contacts with Russian and French aristocrats who did not consider the Ukrainians a separate nation in view of European policy. Such an experience contradicted the policy and practice of Krakowian conservatism, which included the thesis about a natural union between the Poles and the Ukrainians to counterbalance the imperial strivings of Russia. Andrzej Potocki finalized his opinion on the Ukrainian issue after his nomination for a Marshal of the Galician seym (1901), in the context of radicalization of the demands of Ukrainian political authorities and a sudden worsening of Ukrainian-Polish relations. The main motivation of Andrzej Potocki’s actions in the position of a regional marshal was the attempt of Polish ruling circles in Galicia to keep a Ukrainian movement under control.

On 14 March 1684 Francesco Buonvisi (1626–1700), who was then papal diplomat at the Apostolic Nunciature of Vienna, sent a letter from Linz to the Cardinal Secretary of the State, Alderano Cybo (1613–1700), in which he expressed his praise and esteem for the Empress Dowager Eleonora Gonzaga-Nevers (1628–1686). In stark contrast to this, he used to regularly criticize her many times before regarding the recurring controversy over the prerogative of the Apostolic Nuncio to exercise his primary liturgical-ecclesiastical functions at the imperial court. In his exchange of letters with Rome, the papal representative Buonvisi gave a detailed portrait of Eleonora Gonzaga-Nevers and her political-religious activities at the imperial court. In this context, the Viennese nunciature proved to be an important point of reference for the widowed empress, who turned to Buonvisi and thus also to the pope, the Secretariat of the State and the various congregations of the Roman Curia to obtain the necessary graces, absolutions, dispensations or solutions to conflicts. The semi-official and official correspondence of the papal representative at the imperial court as well as the reference to the empress-widow’s petitions and recommendations are observed to make the areas of agency and the activities of Eleonora Gonzaga-Nevers more accessible. The correspondence and the various demands thus provide important information on the »transalpine transfer processes« and their manifold interconnections between Rome and Vienna as well as between the two brokers, the Imperial widow and the Cardinal Nuncio.

Eleonora Gaudieris Band bietet eine Neubewertung von Riegls Beitrag zur Barockforschung anhand seiner bis dato unveröffentlichten Manuskripte zum europäischen Barock und ihrer Verortung im Rahmen der Barockdebate. Mehr als ein Jahrhundert nach der posthumen Veröffentlichung von ausgewählten Passagen aus Riegls Manuskripten  zum Barock liefert das vorliegende Buch Leser:innen erstmals einen umfangreichen Abschnit aus Riegls Vorlesungsnotizen "Kunstgeschichte des Barockzeitalters" (1894-95), die in dem Band von 1908 nur geringen Platz gefunden haben. In seinen Manuskripten untersucht Riegl nicht nur den Ursprung und die ersten Phasen des Barock in Rom, sondern auch dessen Entwicklung in den übrigen Regionen Italiens und nördlich der Alpen, in Österreich, Böhmen und Deutschland. Darüber hinaus spannen Riegls Handschriften einen breiteren chronologischen Bogen: von der ersten Hälfte des 16. bis ins 19. Jahrhundert. Die Analyse des bis heute unveröffentlichten Korpus zeigt seine Bedeutung für ein vollständiges Verständnis von Riegls Beitrag zur Barockhistoriografie. Die Passagen liefern nicht nur eine deutlich umfassendere Untersuchung des Barock als europäisches Phänomen, sondern offenbaren auch Riegls vielschichtigen Barockbegriff, der bis dato nur verkürzt rezipiert wurde und den es in seiner ganzen Breite erst noch zu fassen gilt.

En este trabajo se estudiarán varias fuentes relacionadas con una guerra de plumas entre la Monarquía Hispánica, la República de Venecia y la Roma de Urbano VIII en la década de 1630. Para ello, se reflejarán varios estudios de caso en que estos tres poderes chocaron a través de duras palabras, así como se repasarán sus difíciles relaciones políticas con fuentes diplomáticas. Las polémicas no fueron solo unidireccionales, sino que desde Madrid, Venecia y Roma se lanzaron entre sí dardos que pudieron llegar a ser no solo literarios.  Del lado hispánico, la fuente principal será el Panegírico en epitome apologético de España (1632-1635), un códice manuscrito anónimo e inédito que responde sistemáticamente a las críticas hacia la reputación hispánica con la intención de legitimar la presencia habsbúrgica en Italia. Atacará principalmente a Traiano Boccalini y Giacomo Castellani, principal diana de la obra por su famosa disputa con Francisco de Quevedo y sus mordaces diatribas contra la Monarquía.
Asimismo, se revisará cómo desde la embajada filipina en Venecia del conde de la Roca se intentará agravar a partir de 1632 un conflicto fronterizo entre la Serenísima y Urbano VIII para que estuvieran enfrascados en ello y no se enemistaran abiertamente contra la Monarquía. A esto se unirá una “crisis propagandística” entre aquellas porque el papa borró por esas fechas una inscripción en los palacios vaticanos que exaltaba la ayuda veneciana al papa Alejandro III en su guerra con el emperador Federico Barbarroja allá por el siglo XII. No fue nada baladí, ya que era central en la publicística veneciana por un motivo: según sus plumas afines eso provocó que el pontífice les concediera la jurisdicción sobre el Adriático: un tema capital en las fuentes filo y antivenecianas. Al mismo tiempo, el Panegírico quiso echar más leña al fuego repitiendo constantemente las veces en que Venecia había sido enemiga de Roma y había estado excomulgada, en contraposición a los servicios hispánicos a los papas. La Serenísima será el principal, y obsesivo, objeto de sus ataques, pero no el único.
Debido a que el panegirista también responderá amenazadoramente a las invectivas romanas, se revisarán diversas polémicas que protagonizaron la Monarquía y el Papado desde principios del siglo XVII. El famoso cardenal e historiador pontificio Cesare Baronio estará en el foco de la disputa por sus Annales eclesiastici, concretamente su tomo 11, donde puso en entredicho la legitimidad hispánica sobre el reino de Sicilia y los privilegios eclesiásticos de sus monarcas. Fue un asunto que desató una agria confrontación dialéctica entre el prelado y Madrid/Valladolid. Tendrá su eco en el Panegírico, que también dará mucha importancia a otro asunto no menos importante entre la Monarquía y Roma: la cuestión de si el apóstol Santiago había predicado o no en Hispania.
Por supuesto, el códice también dará mucha relevancia a la no participación activa de Urbano VIII en la guerra europea a través de una argumentación no exenta de amenazas. Este hecho cobra especial interés debido a que el autor material de la obra estaba presente en la Urbe hacia 1632, en un momento de gran tensión con el papa por la célebre protesta en el consistorio romano del cardenal Gaspar de Borja, de cuya relación de la misma hablaremos brevemente. Tampoco podemos olvidar la naturaleza antipapal de algunas de las obras salidas de la imprenta clandestina del conde de la Roca.
Todas estas cuestiones serán buenos ejemplos de cómo los diversos actores de esta historia, el conde de la Roca, Castellani, Boccalini, Baronio, Urbano VIII y Borja, utilizaron la comunicación y sus formas expresadas en textos manuscritos e impresos para defender sus posiciones, exaltar a los poderes que representaban y confrontar con el adversario.
