Der Aufsatz untersucht die Darstellungen der islamischen Religion und Kultur des ehemaligen türkischen Mullahs Muḥammed Şükrī Efendi (1861-1919) aus dem ostanatolischen Erzurum, der nach seiner Begegnung mit einer türkischen Bibelübersetzung zum protestantischen Christentum konvertierte. Nach seiner Taufe in Tiflis nahm er den Namen Johannes Awetaranian an und arbeitete als Missionar für verschiedene europäische Missionsgesellschaften. Der Konvertit, der sich ambitioniert der Islam-Mission, d. h. der Evangelisierung von Muslimen, verschrieb, fungierte auch als Vermittler der islamischen Religion und Kultur für einen europäischen Leserkreis. Die Studie geht dem Islam- und Orientverständnis des Johannes Awetaranian nach und erschließt seine Rolle wie auch seinen Einfluss als Islamexperte und Kulturvermittler in Europa.

This introductory article presents the objectives, scope and contents of the Special Issue titled Labor Migration and Commodity Production in Africa: Global Entanglements. By congregating a diverse team of scholars from Brazil, Turkey, Germany, France, the United States, and Cameroon, all at different stages of their careers, this Special Issue seeks to build upon current trends in the fields of Global and African History to expand our current understanding of the centrality of African subjects in the making of the contemporary, densely globalized yet deeply unequal world. This introduction sets the theoretical framework that guided our call for papers, summarizes the key findings of each article, and situate their individual contributions within the topics related to the agency of African subjects in the creation of increasingly interconnected societies. We argue that the articles in this Special Issue offer a path to further strengthen and expand both fields of African and Global History by incorporating the analysis of understudied sources from diverse linguistic backgrounds, such as Arabic, Turkish, Portuguese and German, as well as legal documents produced by contemporary African states.

Despite being a work focused on British history, Gupta notes that the book alludes to and highlights (often indirectly) the immense significance of global networks and their intertwining, through the unstoppable march of imperialism, in shaping historical developments worldwide. Against this background, she argues that the reader ought to be encouraged to reconsider the characteristics and role of key historical and analytical concepts such as the state, elites, capital, public and private spheres, and, above all, empire, cogently raising the question of how to position Satia's book athwart multiple fields and how best to parse its categories of analysis. Finally, Priya Satia responds to the reviewers' criticism and insights, staking out areas of (dis) agreement, as well as some of the ways ahead that the book generates for the multiple historiographical debates that it revises.

Somnium Xaverii de subsidio Indis ferendo (El sueño de Francisco Javier ayudando a un indio) es uno de los emblemas que aparece en el libro -en el marco del centenario de la Compañía de Jesús- Imago Primi Saeculi publicado en Amberes en 1640. La imagen representa metafóricamente la llegada, a través de un sueño, de Francisco Javier a América –lugar al que nunca llegó, pues su actividad misionera se desarrolló en Asia hasta su muerte en 1552. Propone una perspectiva de actividad misionera con una aproximación anacrónica, simbólica y eficaz. Así, en clave iconográfica, son los pasos de Francisco que se anticipan y marcan una ruta, son sus gestos, es la metáfora de su cuerpo que inunda un espacio de conversión y que transmite un mensaje heroico para el futuro. Es el misionero que cargaba en su espalda a un indígena y el peso de la conversión religiosa, dialogando además con el relato clásico de Eneas que lleva entre sus brazos a su padre Anquises: el joven que fundaría un nuevo linaje e imperio; en cambio, en el emblema jesuita, es Francisco Javier, el Viejo mundo, que crearía otro mundo.
En ese sentido, La misión católica entre éxitos y fracasos sigue esas metáforas, alegorías y prácticas representadas en el sueño de Francisco, con el objetivo de rastrear, a partir de casos de estudio, los espacios y las experiencias de conversión religiosa entre América y Europa, así como también las circulaciones de ideas, actores, paradigmas misionales y las escalas de grises del éxito y fracaso de dicho proceso histórico. La dimensión maximalista de la misión católica en la edad moderna se expresa en la ambición de conquistar los corazones y las mentes de grupos y poblaciones en la búsqueda de una conversión, con arrepentimiento y con el inicio de una nueva vida, a través de un momento excepcional, que hiciese posible que el misionero, al cumplir su tarea, protagonizara un tránsito providencial, dramático y excepcional hacia un orden cristiano renovado y promisorio, tal como se analiza en este volumen colectivo.

Este artigo analisa como o discurso conservador se estruturou nas ditaduras em Portugal e no Brasil, as quais tinham como principais premissas a defesa e vigilância da moral e dos bons costumes. Em Portugal, a discussão está centrada nas manifestações conservadoras proporcionadas pela Constituição de 1933, e como isso foi noticiado em manchetes na imprensa. No Brasil, percorremos o debate das aparições conservadoras, a partir das Marchas da Família com Deus pela Liberdade. Ademais, consideramos a perspectiva da História Global como pressuposto fundamental para reconhecer que esses fenômenos não ocorreram isoladamente, mas foram parte de um contexto mais amplo de autoritarismo e conservadorismo que marcou várias regiões do mundo no século XX.

The study of the structure of scientific knowledge during the early modern
period and the analysis of the causes and consequences of the Great Divergence are crucial for understanding the convergence of the “arts and sciences” (as seen in the Scientific Revolution). This convergence was a transformative process that reshaped economic, scientific, social, and
technological landscapes. This research not only sheds light on historical developments but also provides insights into contemporary challenges, such as enhancing human potential and achieving
technological leadership.
Materials and Methods. To explore these themes, the study employs a combination of comparative historical, chronological, and genealogical research methods. These approaches allow for a nuanced analysis of the evolution of scientific and artistic practices, as well as their socio-economic impacts.
Results. The study builds on the author’s 2018 model of small manufacturing networks, which serves as a foundational framework for understanding the role of crafts in the history of economic theory. This model highlights crafts as a significant yet often overlooked player in the economy, capable of driving innovation and economic growth. By applying this model, the study identifies crafts as a vital component of economic development, particularly in the context of early Modern Russia.
Discussion and Conclusion. The establishment of new institutions during the early Modern period, such as craft guilds in 1722 and the Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1724, played a pivotal role in shaping the social, scientific, and technological landscape. These institutions not only fostered the emergence of new crafts but also facilitated the development and dissemination of new technologies. The integration of the Academy of Sciences with craft workshops contributed to the creation of new craft professions, which in turn supported economic diversification and
technological advancement. This synergy between the arts and sciences underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in driving long-term economic and technological development.
Изучение структуры научного знания раннего Нового времени и анализ причин и последствий Великой дивергенции важно для понимания процесса конвергенции «художеств и наук» (см. научная революция) раннего Нового времени. Для понимания этого процесса необходимо исследование экономических, научных, социальных и технологических факторов. Цель статьи – показать релевантность введения сочетания «художеств и наук» в решении вопроса повышения человеческого потенциала, а также усиления возможности достижения Россией технологического лидерства в долгосрочной перспективе, что является важными предпосылками успешного экономического развития.
Материалы и методы. Использовались сравнительно-исторический, хронологический и генеалогический методы исследования, соблюдались принципы объективности. Результаты исследования. Предложенная автором в 2018 г. модель гибких производственных сетей (small manufacturing networks) дает возможность разработки на ее основе одного из инструментов верификации ремесла в истории экономической теории как еще одного весомого потенциального игрока в экономике страны.
Обсуждение и заключение. Новые институты задают новые векторы развития в социальной, научной и технологической сфере. С учреждением ремесленных цехов в 1722 г. появились новые ремесла; основание Академии художеств и наук в 1724 г. и художественных палат при ней оказалось важным фактором развития и внедрения новых технологий. Академия наук, наряду с цехами, внесла свой вклад в становление новых ремесленных профессий.

This article explores the impact of Asian goods in the Rio de la Plata area through the navigation course of two frigates of the Royal Company of Phillipines, forced by the maritime conflict between the Spanish and British Empires, dock in the Southern estuary. Examining the value and traits of the shipment and the details of the 'comercio de pacotilla', this study analyzes the distribution of the goods from China, Philippines and in particular, India, in the port basin, the hinterland of the Viceroyalty, and its connections to the Alto Peruvian space, the trans-Andean region, and the Littoral way to Paraguay. This episode enables an understanding of the distribution of goods, as well as a more detailed recognition of the actors of this traffic and a renewed evaluation of the role of the company in the global market of Asian goods.

The meeting aimed at integrating for the first time historical study of nomadism and the history of medicine. Epidemic disease has so far been examined almost exclusively in relation to settled societies and to agrarian economies. Now posed was the question: How and to what extent have epidemics affected societies involved in nomadic ways of life? Has the presence of nomads influenced the impact and perception of epidemics? A working hypothesis of the conference was that epidemics, and responses to them, have developed differently in societies in which nomads have had a distinct role. In this article we describe the notion of PQI-operator used before in application role for implementing extended finite state automatons within the subset construction; we give precise definition of this operator and prove important complexity theorems according to the model provided and prior work; the presented operation method can be used for the estimation of the overridden complexity as per automatons constructed through modified subset construction which was well studied before. The complexity, thus, can be of different type according to the classification which was presented earlier in this research of the decidability of complex algorithms which are impractical due to the state explosion, for example, in Rabin-Scott subset construction. These algorithms' complexity can be the type of factorial also. We will show that there exists a PQI-operator followed from the approach presented in the cycle of these works, thus, this work can be seen as the continuation of the study of the theory of automatons and state complexity.

Este artículo examina el desarrollo de relaciones simbióticas dentro de la comunidad china en la Ciudad de México, enfocándose en sus dos principales organizaciones: el Hongmen Chee Kung Tong (HCKT) 致公堂洪門, conocido como la "masonería china", y el Partido Nacionalista Chino (PNCH), Guómíndang 中國國民黨. Esta interacción ocurrió bajo la vigilancia de la Dirección Federal de Seguridad (DFS) en el contexto del anticomunismo internacional propiciado por la Guerra Fría. Comunista Chino (PCCh), liderado por Mao Zedong, y la creación de la República Popular China (RPCh) en 1949. También influyó el establecimiento del gobierno de la República China (RCh) en Taiwán (Formosa), bajo el mando de Chiang Kai-shek. Este proceso histórico generó simpatías hacia ambos bandos, una rivalidad que el gobierno mexicano atendió y observó detenidamente para actuar conforme a sus intereses.

A partir del 4 de octubre de 1582 se puso en marcha el calendario gregoriano en los reinos católicos de Europa, es decir, los territorios pontificios y las regiones gobernadas por Felipe II bajo la unión de las coronas de España y Portugal. En cuestión de dos años la noticia circuló por los dominios ultramarinos, incluyendo las posesiones lusitanas en las Indias orientales y occidentales. Por su parte, las ciudades y estados protestantes se abstuvieron desde un principio en adoptar la reforma, pues los obispos y príncipes electores vieron en esta una estrategia más del Papa Gregorio XIII para interferir en sus asuntos políticos y religiosos.
La historiografía ha prolongado hasta el presente esta disyuntiva estudiando las reacciones frente al calendario gregoriano a partir de los decretos oficiales, circunscribiendo el análisis a un marco fragmentando por religiones, países, círculos de poder y cultura popular.

Sugiura Kohei, a leading Japanese graphic designer, describes in his book, Nihon no Katachi, Asia no Katachi, his experience of overlapping a decorative pattern he saw at a temple of Tibet Buddhism in Bhutan with a picture of a kite he was looking at in a catalogue. He has been interested in the multilayered symbolism found in the Asian countries, and has introduced to the Japanese audience the Asian traditional culture through innovative exhibitions and exhibition catalogues. At the same time, Sugiura has been active in India since 1981. He was first invited to the Industrial Design Centre (IDC), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai under the aegis of UNESCO's Development Programme as a Visual Communications expert to advise on design pedagogy. He delivered lectures and workshops in 1981 and 1983. Kirti Trivedi, a design tutor at IIT visited Sugiura in Japan as a UNESCO Fellow in 1981 and returned to Mumbai with plans to further the Visual Communications Programme. More than three decades on, Trivedi and Sugiura continue to collaborate, forming a pan-Asian creative alliance. Both designers reflect on their own traditional art forms and produce a narrative of similarities, of deep-rooted and established historic links that formulate an 'Asian' present. The paper explores this contemporary pan-Asianism in action based upon the two local traditional design cultures globally connected. Sugiura Kohei, a renowned graphic designer born in 1932, describes in his book, Nihon no Katachi, Asia no Katachi (Japanese Forms, Asian Forms, 1994), his experience of overlapping a decorative pattern he saw at a temple of Tibet Buddhism in Bhutan with a picture of a kite he was looking at in a catalogue. This article traces the circulation of newspapers and journals as physical objects to reconstruct Middle Eastern communists' global connections. I argue that post-First World War Middle Eastern and North African revolutionary militancy was closely linked to global networks. The extensive transregional and transimperial circulation of the communist press discussed here traces these close connections. The Communist International represented a novelty as a self-proclaimed centralist worldwide party. Distinctively, it brought together the means and the will to centralize (much of) global radicalism. This argument also serves to locate the early and mid-1920s as a transitional period in the history of left-wing movements: the means provided by a World Party intersected with the network-like structure of the pre-Comintern revolutionary milieux. The article aims to contribute to global history by discussing a regional -Middle Easternpolitical current, not as the aggregate sum of its national components, but as a product of a global process.

Née du choc des émeutes de Sharpeville et en réponse à l’activité internationale de la résistance sud-africaine, la mobilisation contre l’apartheid réunissait une coalition hétéroclite d’acteurs non gouvernementaux et étatiques. Ce principal mouvement social du xxe siècle, resté ancré dans la mémoire collective occidentale grâce à des événements médiatisés ou des campagnes de boycott, est l’un des facteurs qui ont contribué à la transition démocratique en Afrique du Sud. Son héritage se reflète encore, trente ans plus tard, dans le réseau diplomatique sud-africain.

Resumen. Este artículo presenta un análisis de la evolución de la historiografía del exilio republicano en una doble dimensión. En primer lugar, repasa las estrategias de acercamiento en perspectiva nacional, como son las lógicas de la integración y el retorno. En segundo lugar, revisa las posibilidades de los enfoques transnacional y global a la hora de plantear nuevas agendas de investigación y nuevos debates.

Abstract. This article presents an analysis of the evolution of the historiography of the Republican exile in a double dimension. Firstly, it reviews the approach strategies from a national perspective, such as the logic of integration and return. Secondly, it reviews the possibilities of transnational and global approaches when proposing new research agendas and new debates.

El creciente agrietamiento del eurocentrismo en el campo de las humanidades y las ciencias sociales abre la posibilidad de reconocer la existencia de una sociedad mundial poscolonial que se viene conformando desde mediados del siglo XX. Esta nueva formación social se configura a partir de al menos tres procesos históricos de profundo calado: i) el movimiento de descolonización en su fase avanzada; ii) la emergencia contestaria de los movimientos de liberación nacional del Sur Global, y iii) el ascenso sostenido del bloque del Asia-Pacífico, con epicentro en China. En el siguiente trabajo pretendo demostrar cómo la Escuela de Frankfurt, desde su creación hasta 2021, desarrolló una perspectiva eurocéntrica sin fisuras, y cómo a partir de la llegada de Stephan Lessenich a la dirección del IfS se inicia la primera crítica frankfurtiana al centrismo europeo. Es el avance de esta impugnación la que permitiría conectar a la Escuela con los problemas centrales que acarrea el proceso de mundialización en marcha, tanto en Europa como en el resto del mundo.

Senegal-what is known as a French backyard dating back to the Berlin Conference in 1884. This thesis analyzes the political, cultural, and economic influence o f the United Sates and France in Francophone Africa, particularly in Senegal in the period following the Cold War (1989 to present). I hypothesize that French political influence has been in decline in its backyard, Francophone Africa, particularly in Senegal and that France seems unable to counteract growing U.S. influence and hegemonic ambitions. The study concludes that while French political decline is not reflected in the data and its disengagement from Francophone Africa is not significant in the short term, clearly U.S. influence and involvement in Francophone Africa is growing at a significant level. Building on this we will compare situations of dependency and slavery, drawing on case studies from early modern cultural contact zones in the Americas, Europe, and the Indian Ocean. By the end of the seminar you will have acquired insights into the theoretical and methodological basis of comparative studies and transcultural approaches, and you will be able to conduct comparative analyses of historical case studies.

Global history has come of age but has had little impact on the historiography of early modern Germany. This volume seeks to bring a global perspective to the history of Central Europe by addressing understudied global and colonial entanglements. Exploring the impact of these interactions on court life and home towns, labor migration, material culture, and religious communities, the microhistories presented here reveal the myriad ways in which connections and disconnections underpinned early modern Germany. The authors engage with contemporary debates about global history in general, taking its lacunae as a cue for substantial methodological revisions.

Resumen: En la historia de evangelización del Japón moderno temprano se ha enfatizado tradicionalmente en una "rápida conversión" basado en el número de bautizos masivos según lo señalan documentos históricos de los misioneros. No obstante, a partir de la década de 1990, se planteó un relativismo cultural en lugar de la generalización del fenómeno. Bajo esta perspectiva se indican distintos grados de comprensión de las doctrinas cristianas según los estratos sociales. Además, se trata de interpretar la historia desde el punto de vista del pueblo ordinario, contrastando con la historia convencional relatada desde el lado de los misioneros y las élites nativas. Así, se ha identificado la pervivencia de distintas tradiciones religiosas, en particular, estrechos vínculos entre la cristiandad japonesa y la escuela de la Verdadera Tierra Pura tanto en la estructura organizativa y el formato de predicación como en los conceptos doctrinales e imágenes devocionales. La teoría de la inculturación se refleja hoy en la propia definición del concepto "kirishitan", que alude al mundo de creencias propias de Japón, caracterizado por las intersecciones de elementos derivados de diferentes religiones. Ello abre un nuevo debate sobre una "indigenización" 2 dentro de la mundialización católica.

This book focuses on Chaos, Global NGO Regime, Sovereignty and Nation State as well as Religion and Nation-state. Additionally, this book answered the questions of “does a State need a strong military? and “is India a Nation-state?” However, debates on whether or not Pakistan ruled over Bangladesh as a colonial ruler or whether Maududi secularized Islam or radicalized Islam shaped this book in a new direction. A comparative view between Global history vs. Comparative History and Mughal Empire vs. British Empire is another vital issue of this book.

Nationalism today depends on the perception of victimhood. The historical memory of past suffering endows nationalist movements with political legitimacy and a sense of moral superiority. Koreans recall Japanese colonial atrocities, while Japan commemorates the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Israel sanctifies the Holocaust and Poland trumpets the Nazi & Soviet occupation. Even today’s Germany and Putin’s Russia, the perpetrator of these crimes, casts itself as a victim by pointing to the national suffering.

In this theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich book, Jie-Hyun Lim offers a new way to understand nationalism and its political instrumentalization of suffering, developing the concept of “victimhood nationalism” and exploring it in a range of global settings. He examines relations among Poland, Germany, Israel, Korea, and Japan, focusing on how memories of colonialism, the Holocaust, and Stalinist terror have converged and intertwined in transnational spaces. With an emphasis on memory formation, Lim scrutinizes how perpetrators in Germany and Japan transformed themselves into victims, as well as how nationalists in Poland, Korea, and Israel portray themselves as hereditary victims in order to rebut external criticism. He considers the construction of nations as victims and perpetrators, tracing the interaction of history and memory. Ultimately, this book contends, challenging victimhood nationalism is necessary to overcome the endless competition over national suffering and instead promote reconciliation, mutual understanding, and transnational solidarity.

Free State Gerits' book is part of a scholarship which, in the wake of Westad's The Global Cold War, seeks to pay more attention to the role played by the developing world in the Cold War. Gerits, however, criticises much of this scholarship, especially those studies produced by international historians, which 'never abandon the bipolar international system in favour of a multi-directional analysis of the battle for modernity' (10). The author contends that, for the most part, this reading of history underestimates the importance of 'anti-colonial' or 'liberationist' ideologies in the competition for the best development model and their impact on the international system. This is particularly true for the African continent in the period taken into examination by Gerits, that is, the first two decades after WWII. In this context, African liberationists, proponents of Pan-Africanism as a 'liberationist interventionist ideology', did not only pose an obstacle to the Cold War entrance into Africa and did not only seek to play the Cold War powers against each other. They instead challenged the USSR, 'the empire of equality', the United States, 'the empire of liberty', and the European 'empires of exploitation', with their own alternative 'anti-colonial modernity'. The latter, Gerits explains, is based on the legacy of the Haitian revolution and is then connected to the evolution of the Pan-African and anti-colonial movements, seeing 'precolonial ideas not as an obstacle but as a precondition for effective development' (181). Gerits seeks to demonstrateand this is the book's most intriguing and innovative aspecthow 'African visions actually altered imperial and Cold War structures' (11). Gerits argues that anticolonial interventionist ideologies forced Cold War powers and European ex-colonial masters to significantly modify their foreign policy in Africa, including their public diplomacy. This happened at least until liberationist ideologies started to crumble at the end of the period under consideration (1966) when a new African leadership became unhappy about the results of 'anti-colonial modernity'. Historians, Gerits writes, have constantly portrayed the endeavours of the 'Pan-African alternative' as a 'failed project' which fell victim to Cold War intrusions. Neki od njih danas već uživaju status klasika, dok neki, prema našem mišljenju, pružaju pitak pregled različitih strujanja i debata te u tom smislu mogu poslužiti kao korisna polazišna točka za daljnje čitanje. U prvom dijelu knjige donosimo tekstove koji daju pregled teorijskih strujanja u okviru studija nacija i nacionalizma (Kramer i Storm), kao i tri teksta koji pružaju nova teorijska promišljanja i predlažu konceptualne iskorake, artikulirajući tako suvremene pristupe u okviru istraživanja nacija i nacionalizma (Brubaker, Zahra, Heaney). Drugi je pak dio posvećen ključnim pristupima koji su se u posljednje vrijeme etablirali kao alternative dominantnoj nacionalnoj paradigmi: transnacionalna historija (AHR razgovor), historija transfera (Espagne), histoire croisée (Werner i Zimmermann) te globalna historija (Charle, Drayton i Motadel).

(Ouverture) By making the case for opera houses as symbols of civilized status in International Relations (IR), this article addresses the discrepancy between the waning popularity of opera and the veritable boom in new opera houses we are witnessing across the globe. We foreground the multivocality of status symbols-they may be intended to communicate more than one meaning, by and to more than one audience. Whether intended as vehicles of urban, regional, or national status ambitions, building opera houses has signaled civilizational achievements. After a brief exploration of status symbols, we explore opera houses in general, before turning to a more in-depth study of the recent Oslo Opera House. Through the empirical study we show how opera houses have been (and still are) complex status symbols, with multiple internal and external dimensions, straddling the line between getting other states to sing along or serving mainly for purposes of singing alone. Finally, we posit that the current international boom in opera houses is a testimony to the enduring importance of being perceived as civilized in IR-long after the standard of civilization has ceased to be explicitly applied.

Sie befasst sich mit bilateralen Abhängigkeitsbeziehungen, die sich dadurch auszeichnen, dass sie sich in einer Abfolge zwischen Sklavenhändlern, Ausbildern und Besitzern sowie (später freigelassenen) Sklaven ereignen.
In diesem Beispielfall konnte die Versklavung hohen gesellschaftlichen Aufstieg ermöglichen und damit gegebenenfalls sogar zu einer späteren Umkehrung des Abhängigkeitsverhältnisses führen. Der dadurch zu erlangende hohe soziale Status veranlasste manch einen Nicht-Sklaven sogar dazu, sich als ausgebildeter Elitesklave (Mamluk) auszugeben. Während der Eintritt in das Abhängigkeitsverhältnis in solchen Ausnahmefällen von den Abhängigen bestimmt werden konnte, konnten sie Dauer und Beendigung durch Kooperation und gute Leistung und dem Aufbau von Beziehungen unter Umständen beeinflussen.
Letztlich war nicht die Freilassung ausschlaggebend für die Karriere, sondern die Beziehungen zu den verschiedenen sie auf diesem Weg begleitenden Personen, die nämlich auch nach einer Freilassung bestehen blieben.

This essay presents collaborative research related to the National Endowment for the Humanities-Arts and Humanities Research Council grant-funded project Connecting Threads, a website that brings together academics and curators across the United Kingdom and the United States who seek to contribute to wider decolonization work in the humanities and engage communities whose contributions to global cultures of textiles and fashion have historically been ignored. The Connecting Threads research team uses the Dutch Textile Trade Project’s data and web applications to deepen understanding of the Madras kerchief, a large checked cotton square cloth that circulated in Afro-diasporic communities in the Caribbean during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The following is an edited transcript of a roundtable that took place at the University of Glasgow in September 2018. The roundtable was organized by Dr. Julia McClure in conjunction with the Poverty Research Network’s conference - Beyond Development: The Local Visions of Global Poverty. That conference brought into focus the ways in which the global and local levels meet at the site of poverty and highlighted the different conceptions on the global are generated from the perspective of poverty. The roundtable brought together leading scholars from Europe, Africa, Asia and North and South America to take stock of global history as a field, to consider the role of existing centres of knowledge production, and to assess new directions for the field.

uN ejemplo de gEnus dEmonstrAtivum eN la rhEtoricA christiAnA de dIego valadéS Carmen Hermoso de mendoza garcía y delfín ortega Sánchez universidad de extremadura en el presente trabajo se analiza la preponderancia concedida a la figura del Sumo pontífice sobre la autoridad monárquica española en la rhetorica christiana del franciscano diego valadés (perugia, 1579). Se estudian los argumentos propios del genus demonstrativum que defienden la autoridad papal en asuntos de Indias y el soporte gráfico (stemmata) que lo ratifica.

Essa tese pretende aproximar os campos da História Global e o dos Estudos de Gênero e Sexualidade, visto que, até então, ambos têm se interseccionado de forma bastante limitada. A partir do enfoque em dois contextos na Guerra Fria, a ditatura militar no Brasil e o regime ditatorial na Alemanha Oriental, é analisado de que forma ambos os lados da disputa ideológica encontraram na repressão às sexualidades dissidentes um instrumento político e discursivo. Além disso, é almejado também observar como tais sujeitos resistiram a estes regimes e construíram movimentos políticos em seus países. Utilizando documentos do movimento LGBTQIA+ brasileiro, parte do Arquivo Edgard Leuenroth em Campinas, e do movimento homossexual alemão oriental, disponível no Schwules Museum em Berlim, o trabalho dá especial destaque às conexões globais mantidas por estes grupos. Ao realizar tal análise, descontrói-se uma narrativa típica da Guerra Fria que desconsidera as diferentes iniciativas e os protagonismos transnacionais mantidos pelos dissidentes da cisheteronormatividade na Europa Central e do Leste e no Sul Global. Essa compreensão mais complexa e atenta às nuances e conexões globais atesta a proficuidade de um olhar global para a historiografia queer. Ao mesmo tempo, comprova a necessidade da História Global considerar a diversidade de gênero e sexualidade em seus empreendimentos.

A perspectiva de História Global, ainda pouco empreendida nos estudos de gênero e sexualidade, auxilia a
observação dos jogos de escala entre o global e o local que marcam os movimentos LGBTI+ no país. Destaca-se no trabalho
o processo judicial contra o jornal Lampião da Esquina durante a ditadura militar brasileira e a resistência internacional
engajada especialmente por João Antônio Mascarenhas, o qual angariou o apoio de grupos homossexuais estrangeiros. Tal
cooperação evidencia uma integração global do movimento homossexual brasileiro, respeitando suas especificidades locais,
mas cada vez mais integrado à uma rede global de resistência. Além disso, tais conexões indicam uma divulgação e circulação
internacional do Lampião, desconstruindo a concepção de uma ação organizada LGBTI+ no Brasil subordinada aos fluxos de
influência Norte-Sul, apontando para outras direções de trocas, influências e integrações. Para o trabalho, destaca-se o arquivo
