Following important work by Pizarro, Uhlmann and Salovey (2003) on moral judgments of uncontrolled/impulsive versus controlled/ deliberate action, we focus on the related issue of the moral evaluation of emotion-motivated versus principle-driven behavior. We examine: (a) the potential lesser blameworthiness of antisocial acts perceived as driven by emotion as opposed to principle; (b) how factors governing the moral evaluation of antisocial acts might extend to the evaluation of prosocial acts; and (c) how overriding a moral emotion in favor of a moral principle affects moral attributions.

Seven studies tested the hypothesis that compared with sympathy symhedonia (sympathy for another's good fortune) is inherently more contingent on prior emotional attachment to its targets. As predicted, Studies 1-4 found that reported attachment was higher for past episodes of symhedonia than for those of sympathy and that recalled incidence of sympathy exceeded that of symhedonia when the target was a stranger. Study 5 showed that whereas symhedonia was significantly higher for high-versus lowattachment targets sympathy was not. Study 6 found that sympathy is more likely than symhedonia when a relationship is strained. Study 7 found that both sympathy and symhedonia are weaker for nonclose (vs. close) others, but the disparity is significantly smaller for sympathy than for symhedonia.

The widespread assumption that anger is a response to wrongdoing and motivates people to sanction it, as well as the lack of distinction between resentment and indignation, obscure notable differences among these three emotions in terms of their specific beliefs, goals, and action tendencies, their nonmoral or moral character, and the kinds of moral claim implied. We provide a cognitive-motivational analysis of anger, resentment, and indignation, showing that, while sharing a common core, they are distinguishable from one another because they comprise nonoverlapping belief-goal compounds. We also emphasize the usefulness of applying a belief-goal analysis to kin emotions because, by comparison, one can sharpen the analysis and identify the distinctive features of each of them.

This work proposes an analysis of the cognitive and motivational components of hope, its basic properties, and the affective dispositions and behaviors it is likely to induce. In our view current treatments of hope do not fully account for its specificity, by making hope overlap with positive expectation or some specification of positive expectation. In contrast, we attempt to highlight the distinctive features of hope, pointing to its differences from positive expectation, as well as from a sense of successful agency, optimism, trust, and faith. Fear and anxiety are also addressed, and the latter is analyzed as a state of mind implying both fear and hope. Finally, the relationship between hope and motivation is explored, and "active" hope is compared with "passive" hope. Some concluding remarks summarize the results of our analysis, and stress the role of hope in fostering the individual's well-being.

Within the frame o f Eurofleets, the development o f common software tools included the development o f a reporting tool. EARS, the Eurofleets Autom atic Reporting System consists o f an automatic data acquisition part, a manual event module and reporting functionalities. The manual event module aims in the firs t place to have accurately registered metadata which is only possible when registered as close as possible to the time o f measurement or sampling. Besides complete and correct metadata, interoperable inform ation is o f high importance fo r fu rthe r use, like reporting, browsing and dissemination, over the d ifferent cruises and vessels. Existing vocabularies should be considered as input and vice versa. Especially the SeaDataNet data dictionaries served by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Vocabulary Server are highly relevant. By connecting to these, the standardisation o f m eta-inform ation starts a step sooner: at sea instead o f at the data centre.

The objective of the study was to test the usability of ‘Feeling Master’ as a psychotherapeutic interactive gaming tool with LEGO cartoon faces showing the five basic emotions, for the assessment of emotional recognition in people with schizophrenia in comparison with healthy controls, and the relationship between face affect recognition (FER), attributional style, and theory of mind (ToM), which is the ability to understand the potential mental states and intentions of others. Nineteen individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) and 17 healthy control (HC) subjects completed the ‘Feeling Master’ that includes five basic emotions. To assess social cognition, the group with schizophrenia was evaluated with the Personal and Situational Attribution Questionnaire (IPSAQ) for the assessment of attributional style and the Hinting Task (ToM). Dans cet article, la relation entre l'empathie et la sympathie est abordée en mettant principalement l'accent sur le concept de "pathos". Dans la conception rhétorique d'Aristote, le pathos est un phénomène lié à la fois au logos et à la crédibilité de l'orateur (ethos). En particulier, une lettre ouverte écrite par Atatürk en 1934 à l'occasion de la commémoration de la bataille de Gallipoli a été analysée en termes de contenu émotionnel et d'effet pathétique, montrant comment l'empathie établie avec ses ennemis après 19 ans s'est transformée en sympathie. À cette fin, la réponse d'une mère autrichienne à cette lettre, ainsi qu'un bref message commémoratif écrit par Atatürk la même année et publié dans un journal en Australie, et la réponse du rédacteur en chef de ce journal à ce message, ont été examinés dans leur contexte historique et du point de vue de leur fonction communicative. Atatürk a opté, dans les deux discours examinés, pour montrer son émotion au lieu de l’exprimer verbalement. Ce qui montre que « l’émotion montrée » dans le discours s’avère plus impressionnante et efficace par rapport à « l’émotion dite ». En effet, cette efficacité a été consté de façon claire dans les deux discours en réponse à ceux d’Atatürk. En conclusion, on a constaté que dans les quatre discours analysés du point de vue du transfert de l’affect, de l’ethos, du pathos et due l’empathie-sympathie, l'empathie
démontrée par Atatürk a fait ressortir des traits d’ethos comme humain, pacifique et paternel.

A variety of public officials have expressed concern that policies mandating collective public health behaviors (e.g., national/ regional “lockdown”) may result in behavioral fatigue that ultimately renders such policies ineffective. Boredom, specifically, has been singled out as one potential risk factor for non-compliance. We examined whether there was empirical evidence to support this concern during the COVID-19 pandemic in a large cross-national sample of 63,336 community respondents from 116 countries. Although boredom was higher in countries with more COVID-19 cases and countries that instituted more stringent lockdowns, such boredom did not predict longitudinal within-person decreases in social distancing behavior (or vice versa; n = 8031) in early spring and summer of 2020. In this contribution, we present several layers of linguistic analysis, the aim of which is to provide indications on the strength of arguments in context. This contribution proposes a synthesis of existing resources to evaluate strength also used in opinion analysis, then it develops features which are proper to argument strength. Linguistic elements related to (1) the argument contents, (2) the discourse structures associated with this argument (which may introduce restrictions), (3) the nature of argument schemes used, and (4) some rhetoric elements are investigated.

In argumentative political speech, the way an issue is framed may indicate the unstated assumptions of the argument and hence the ideological position of the speaker. Our goal is to use and extend our prior work on discourse parsing and the identification of argumentation schemes to identify specific instances of issue framing and, more generally, ideological positions as they are expressed in text. We are using annotated historical and contemporary proceedings of the British, Canadian, and Dutch parliaments, looking in particular at speech on the topic of immigration.

The article follows The Tempest’s nexus of ocean and emotion for new ways of understanding its place in an expanding, early colonial world. Interconnecting early modern scholarship on oceans, emotion, and race, the article juxtaposes The Tempest’s privileging of white attachments and oceanic suffering with the fates of globally displaced African and indigenous persons summoned through Sycorax and Caliban. It also argues that the play renders salient a westward and potentially deadly route of travel for Prospero by partially aligning his journey with Magellan’s and Drake’s desired circumnavigations – their crossings of the Mare Pacifico, the ‘peaceful ocean,’ such as teased by Prospero’s pleas for “gentle breath” in the Epilogue. Suggesting that The Tempest’s geographical-cum-affective multi-referentiality reflects shifting notions of globality and precarious sea-travel in an early colonial world, the article opens up The Tempest to new global perspectives whilst contributing to diversifying early modern scholarship’s own oceanic and affective coordinates.

IT: L'Intelligenza Neuro-Sistemica Integrata (NSI) è un modello formale e teorico che descrive la capacità dei sistemi complessi-biologici, cognitivi o artificiali-di riorganizzarsi dinamicamente in risposta a stati di disallineamento interno. Attraverso la funzione φᴺˢᴵ : S → S′, il modello identifica un passaggio da stati disfunzionali a configurazioni coese e operative. NSI integra segnali biologici, strutture cognitive, ambiente e relazione, consentendo la modellazione di dinamiche di riorganizzazione funzionale. È applicabile in ambito clinico, computazionale ed epistemologico, mantenendo verificabilità teorica e tracciabilità semantica. Un esempio applicativo teorico riguarda l'impiego di NSI come modello di integrazione tra segnali cognitivi e corporei nei percorsi di autoregolazione.

This project focuses on laying the foundations for automated analysis of argumentation schemes, supporting identification and classification of the arguments being made in a text, for the purpose of scoring the quality of written analyses of arguments. We developed annotation protocols for 20 argument prompts from a college-level test under the framework of the theory of argumentation schemes, which defines reasoning patterns in argumentation. The annotation protocols listed critical questions associated with each argumentation scheme, which makes the argument structure in a text explicit and classifiable. Furthermore, we annotated 200 student essays across four selected argument prompts to test if the annotation protocols can be applied reliably by human annotators. Preliminary results indicate that this method of analyzing argument structure is reliable and promising.

Rapid response to danger holds an evolutionary advantage. In this positron emission tomography study, phobics were exposed to masked visual stimuli with timings that either allowed awareness or not of either phobic, fear-relevant (e.g., spiders to snake phobics), or neutral images. When the timing did not permit awareness, the amygdala responded to both phobic and fear-relevant stimuli. With time for more elaborate processing, phobic stimuli resulted in an addition of an affective processing network to the amygdala activity, whereas no activity was found in response to fear-relevant stimuli. Also, right prefrontal areas appeared deactivated, comparing aware phobic and fear-relevant conditions. Thus, a shift from top-down control to an affectively driven system optimized for speed was observed in phobic relative to fear-relevant aware processing. Fear is a ubiquitous human experience in response to threat, which is rooted in defense systems of the mammalian brain . Its nature is captured in exaggerated form in specific phobiasintense, irrational fears of circumscribed objects or events. When confronted by their feared object, people with small animal phobias (e.g., snakes, spiders) exhibit a distinct psychophysiological response that includes increases in skin conductance and blood pressure, a rapid heart rate acceleration, and potentiated startle reflexes to acoustic probe stimuli (e.g., . The characteristics of this response, in particular the startle potentiation, suggests that it is mediated by the hub of the brain's fear network, the amygdala in the medial temporal lobe . O ¨hman and Mineka (2001) suggested that a vast literature on fears and phobias could be organized around the concept of a fear module-a behavioral, mental, and neural system that evolved to help our distant forefathers to cope with recurring life-threatening events in their ecological niches. Its behavioral characteristics include that it may be automatically (or unconsciously) activated by stimuli that derive part of their threat potential from evolutionary contingencies. The automaticity of phobic responses has been documented in studies using backward masking to preclude conscious awareness of the phobic stimulus , but so far, this technique has not been used to examine responses of the human brain to phobic material. In the Kaizo papers, Husserl defines renewal as an active dynamic towards a systematic rationalization of the individual and the community, aimed especially at preventing future axiological disappointments (‘devaluations’). However, in these articles he does not explicitly describe the method for achieving such a task, which casts doubt on its feasibility. The goal of the present work is to fill this gap with the help of other Husserlian material, especially the Studien zur Struktur des Bewusstseins. I argue that renewal consists concretely in a critical and genetic procedure that tests our axiological convictions by ensuring that they do not originate in affective biases. I specifically examine three of these biases, namely fortuitous associations, tradition, and moods, before demonstrating how they can be overcome through a series of deconstructions and decenterings that culminate in the originary experience in which the value at stake is affectively given ‘in person’.

Moral ambiguity has become an aspect of modern drama characters. Protagonists in modern movies were yesterday's antagonists, yet with detailed background to trigger empathy. They are not purely bad and can do both good and bad things. A scholarly interest can be detected in recent studies to analyze the shift from the traditional narrative to a more progressive and complicated one, from a clear-cut between good and evil, to a context that presents the evil personality as complicated and not simple, providing character background and encouraging people not to rush judging them, and even sympathizing with them. Therefore, audience perception of the villain characters, anti-heroes, and morally ambiguous characters has changed correspondingly. The disposition theory explains the moral judgment of the characters through their actions; accordingly, the audience will form favorable or unfavorable attitudes towards them. The relationship between character morality and audience liking is another raised issue due to the subversions of the character behavior. The expectancy violation theory EVT explained this perspective as the audience may positively perceive the villain character, if he behaved in a more moral way than what was expected from him. Perceived realism, character liking, and enjoyment are also related to character moral evaluation. The current study aims to examine the representation of the villain in modern drama, what can be called the "New Villain", especially in movie sequels and serial dramas, in which these characters became more complex, humanified and relatable. A qualitative approach through a focus group discussion is conducted to investigate audience perception of the evil characters, if they really sympathize with them, why and in which context.

The second story of creation in Genesis ch.2 and its contionuations is shown to tell the story of the birth of humankind as we know it, or better, of its creative self-formation, culminating, as I argue, in full-fledged human selfhood and agency. It is a story punctuated by three highly significant, divinely guided moments of emotional significance.
The three are Adam and Eve’s shameful covering of their nakedness after eating from the forbidden “tree of knowledge of good and evil” (2:17), the story of Cain’s killing of Ebel and its aftermath (4:2-17), and that of the city and the so-called Tower of Babel (11:1-9). The three, I argue, form a succession of harsh divine interventions in which three grounding layers of human selfhood are laid by means of three categories of exclusively human self-directed emotion—two pertaining to shame and one to a specific form of humility.

Prior research has demonstrated that the daily experience of negative affect is associated with increased levels of proinflammatory activity as evidenced by higher interleukin-6 among Americans but not among Japanese. This cultural difference may be driven by culturally divergent beliefs about negative affect as a source of threat to self-image versus as natural and integral to life. Here, we examined whether culture may moderate the relationship between negative affect and biological stress responses, with a focus on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity. By using culturally matched surveys of Americans (N ϭ 761) and Japanese (N ϭ 328), we found that negative affect was associated with a flattening of the diurnal cortisol slope among Americans after controlling for demographic variables, personality traits, sleep patterns, and health behaviors. In contrast, the association between negative affect and the HPA axis activity was negligible among Japanese. Moreover, we assessed biological health risk with biomarkers of both inflammation (interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein levels) and cardiovascular function (higher systolic blood pressure and total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio) and found that the relationship between negative affect and increased biological health risk, which was observed only among Americans, was mediated by the flattening of the diurnal cortisol rhythm. These findings suggest that cultural differences in how emotions are construed may make the experience of negative affect more or less stressful and differentially consequential for health.

Individuals with lower social status have been reported to express more anger, but this evidence comes mostly from Western cultures. Here, we used representative samples of American and Japanese adults and tested the hypothesis that the association between social status and anger expression depends on whether anger serves primarily to vent frustration, as in the United States, or to display authority, as in Japan. Consistent with the assumption that lower social standing is associated with greater frustration stemming from life adversities and blocked goals, Americans with lower social status expressed more anger, with the relationship mediated by the extent of frustration. In contrast, consistent with the assumption that higher social standing affords a privilege to display anger, Japanese with higher social status expressed more anger, with the relationship mediated by decision-making authority. As expected, anger expression was predicted by subjective social status among Americans and by objective social status among Japanese. Implications for the dynamic construction of anger and anger expression are discussed.

Working with animals is a daily occurrence for millions of people who often complete tasks which are tainted, in spite of the work being seen as essential in modern society. Animal shelter-work is such an occupation. This article contributes to a deeper understanding of the caring–killing paradox (a dissonance that workers face when killing animals they are also caring for), through an insider ethnographic study. We find that care-based animal dirty work consists of unique ambiguities and tensions related to powerlessness, deception and secrecy in the work based on a ‘processing-plant’ framework which informs how workers deal with unwanted animals. We find competing ideologies of care and control to be foundational in this work.

The anger-superiority hypothesis states that angry faces are detected more efficiently than friendly faces. Previously research used schematized stimuli, which minimizes perceptual confounds, but violates ecological validity. The authors argue that a confounding of appearance and meaning is unavoidable and even unproblematic if real faces are presented. Four experiments tested carefully controlled photos in a search-asymmetry design. Experiments 1 and 2 revealed more efficient detection of an angry face among happy faces than vice versa. Experiment 3 indicated that the advantage was due to the mouth, but not to the eyes, and Experiment 4, using upright and inverted thatcherized faces, suggests a perceptual basis. The results are in line with a sensory-bias hypothesis that facial expressions evolved to exploit extant capabilities of the visual system.

In recent research, several experiments have tested a preattentive threat-advantage hypothesis that threatening or negative faces can be discriminated preattentively, by using the visual search paradigm. However, supporting evidence is nonuniform, giving rise to the suspicion that stimulus factors rather than the stimuli's category of facial threat versus friendliness are responsible for sporadic demonstrations of a threat advantage. However, it is also possible that differences in experimental procedure contribute to the heterogeneous results. To test this possibility I selected examples from the past literature and presented them within the same constant experimental setting. I found a consistent advantage for negative face targets among positive face distractors with all stimulus pairs. Search slopes, however, mostly revealed inefficient search, questioning the preattentive discrimination of facial affect.

Do threatening or negative faces capture attention? The authors argue that evidence from visual search, spatial cuing, and flanker tasks is equivocal and that perceptual differences may account for effects attributed to emotional categories. Empirically, the authors examine the flanker task. Although they replicate previous results in which a positive face flanked by negative faces suffers more interference than a negative face flanked by positive faces, further results indicate that face perception is not necessary for the flanker-effect asymmetry and that the asymmetry also occurs with nonemotional stimuli. The authors conclude that the flanker-effect asymmetry with affective faces cannot be unambiguously attributed to emotional differences and may well be due to purely perceptual differences between the stimuli.

Research on surprise relevant to the cognitive-evolutionary model of surprise proposed by is reviewed. The majority of the assumptions of the model are found empirically supported. Surprise is evoked by unexpected (schema-discrepant) events, whereas the novelty and the valence of the eliciting events

Three experiments examine multimodal integration of tone pitch (high/low), facial expression stimuli (happy/angry), and responses (happy/angry) in a compatibility paradigm. When the participants' task is to imitate facial expressions (Experiment 1), smiles are facilitated by high tones whereas frowns are facilitated by low tones. Experiments 2 and 3 further analyse this effect and show that there is both integration between the tone stimulus and the facial stimulus and between the tone stimulus and the facial response. Results suggest that pitch height is associated with emotion. An interpretation in terms of an embodied cognition approach that emphasizes an interweavement of perception and action is discussed.

Research on boredom in second language acquisition has proliferated, with mixed findings on its links to L2 achievement. However, no meta-analysis has explored this correlation. The present meta-analysis examined their links based on 37 independent samples with 17,800 individual participants from 34 primary studies. A negative correlation was found with a medium effect size (r =-0.30, 95 % CI:-0.34,-0.27). Moderator analyses revealed varying effect sizes across different measures of boredom and achievement, types of achievement, educational levels, and age groups of participants. Our findings underscore that boredom exerts both short-term and long-term impairing effects on L2 learning, offering L2 teachers important insights for instructional design, classroom practices, and self-assessment. This study also suggests key directions for future research, including a granular conceptualization of boredom across varying timescales and levels of situational specificity, research design improvements, measurement enhancements, and exploration of diverse research contexts.

Neuropsychological models of depression highlight temporoparietal hypofunction associated with low emotional arousal in major depressive disorder (MDD). These models were derived from indirect measures such as neuropsychological tests and electroencephalography alpha band power. Objective: To determine if high-arousing stimuli directly modulated activity in attention and arousalrelated sensory brain regions in patients with MDD. Design: Between-group comparison (patients with MDD vs healthy control subjects) of neuromagnetic oscillatory activity driven by flickering emotional and neutral pictures (steady-state visual evoked fields [ssVEFs]). Setting: Center of magnetoencephalography at a public university and public ambulatory mental health service. Participants: Fifteen female low-anxious patients with MDD and 15 female controls. The groups were matched with respect to age and handedness. Intervention: Magnetoencephalographic recordings and self-report ratings. Main Outcome Measures: Modulation of current source strengths obtained by frequency domain minimum norm source localization of ssVEFs.

Turizm sektöründe sunulan sıradanlaşmış hizmetler beklentileri değişen turistlerin istek ve ihtiyaçlarını karşılama da yetersiz kalmaktadır. Bu nedenle turizm işletmeleri deneyimler aracılığıyla farklılaşarak turistlerin beklentilerini karşılamaktadır. Hizmetler de olduğu gibi deneyimlerin de sıradanlaşmasını önlemek amacıyla farklı deneyimler sunan temalı konaklama işletmeleri oluşmakta ve turistlerin farklılık arayışlarına cevap verebilen bu işletmelerin sayısı gün geçtikçe artmaktadır. Farklı deneyimler sunan temalı konaklama işletmelerinden birisi de suyun üzerinde teknede veya gemide konaklama teması ile hizmet sunan botellerdir. Bu çalışmada Türkiye'de bulunmayan ancak Avrupa'da nehir kenarlarındaki şehirlerde sıkça karşılaşılan, nehir kenarında sabitlenmiş bir teknede veya gemi de konaklama imkânı sunarak turistlere farklı deneyimler sağlayan boteller ele alınmıştır. Türkçe literatüre katkı sağlamak amacıyla literatür taramasından oluşan bu çalışma derleme niteliğindedir.

Barak Obama, orator extraordinaire, the embodiment of the American success myth, 'global' prophet of the adoring masses and multi-media auratic figure, is the leading illustration of what is the expanded nexus of celebrity, spectacle and politics in the age of what Zygmund Bauman refers to as liquid modernity or 'the era of disembedding without re-embedding ' (2001, p. 89). This is the era in which a traumatic sense of fear, uncertainty and transience defines one's relationship to the nation state, and social (media) centre, as they lose their economic singularity and cultural coherency and cohesiveness in a world system ever inter-connected and driven increasingly, incessantly by supra-corporate concerns and spectacular celebrity-based presentations. In this world of 'togetherness dismantled' (Bauman 2003, p. 119), the disenfranchised individual feels they cannot meet the trans-capital intensive, show reel-like, boundaryless world on solid ground. That adoration, or a liquefied definition of it, is key to this imagined and affective communion between Obama and those who adore him, suggests that there is a terrible wanting and simultaneous waning to those who look for such rootedness and the promise of deliverance in the celebrity political figure. This is a charismatic authority figure who promises this solidity yet streams in and out of material view, unable to fix or properly propagate their communion beyond triumphant spectacularism. Their 'lightness of being' (ibid, p. 123-9) is powerfully seductive and decidedly empty because it echoes the instantaneous (instant) way in which all lives are increasingly led. I will suggest that liquid celebrity is one of the cornerstones of liquid modernity, and Barack Obama is the epitome of this 'runniness'.

Este ensaio tem por objetivo interrogar a recepção do pensamento fenomenológico no contexto russo nas primeiras décadas do século XX, no contexto epistêmico da Filosofia e da Psicologia. Contudo, para fins de concisão e como primeira etapa de uma investigação mais ampla, faremos a escolha por dois diferentes autores do cenário russo: Gustav Gustavovich Shpet (1879-1937), eminente filósofo russo, e Lev Semenovich Vigotski (1896-1934), psicólogo russo de grande influência. Justificamos essas escolhas, primeiro, pelo fato de Shpet ter estudado diretamente com Husserl e por ter contribuído para a difusão da fenomenologia na Rússia e na URSS, além de ter avançado uma visão própria a respeito da fenomenologia em diálogo com a Filosofia de Hegel. Segundo, porque Vigotski é um autor proeminente na Psicologia brasileira, mas cuja obra ainda carece de uma revisão especialmente atenta à construção de seu projeto e de suas influências. Terceiro, porque há uma linha de influência direta entre Shpet e Vigotski que pode, assim, nos ajudar a iluminar parte desse complexo quebra-cabeças conceitual, epistemológico e histórico.  Sendo assim, na primeira parte, apresentamos as principais ideias do pensamento de Edmund Husserl, dando-se ênfase à suas definições de Psicologia Descritiva e de fenomenologia transcendental, as quais serão importantes para as discussões seguintes. Em seguida, contextualizarmos a recepção de seu pensamento no cenário russo, destacando a obra de G. Shpet como seu importante receptor e mediador. Por fim, a recepção fenomenologia na obra do psicólogo soviético L. S. Vigotski; para tanto, daremos destaque a três pontos fundamentais: a sua crítica metodológica à fenomenologia e a incorporação de temas fenomenológicos em suas investigações, bem como algumas interfaces de influência de G. Shpet sobre suas teses. Dessa forma, como pano de fundo de nosso estudo, encontra-se o interesse pela interface entre Filosofia e Psicologia e a influência contextual, social e política, em sua ecologia epistêmica, o que nos exige uma visão ampla a respeito dos intercâmbios, das trocas e das influências mútuas na construção do conhecimento.

This paper draws from the resources of Iris Murdoch's moral philosophy to analyze the ethical status of the emotions at two related levels of reflection. Methodologically, it argues that a recovery of the emotions requires a revised notion of moral theory which affirms the basic orientation of consciousness to some notion of value or the good. Researchers frequently disagree about the latent structure of emotions. Taxometric analysis-a method for determining whether the latent structure of a construct is best defined as categorical or purely dimensional-can be a useful tool for resolving these debates. The present study used taxometric analysis to investigate the latent structure of envy. Scholars disagree about whether envy is necessarily malicious or whether it can also be benign. Van de Ven, Zeelenberg, and Pieters (2009) claim that benign envy exists, and that it is distinct from malicious envy. Much of their evidence for this claim relies on latent class analysis, which can be biased toward creating categories with data that actually vary dimensionally (Cleland, Rothschild, & Haslam, 2000; Uebersax, 1999). Bu araştırma, İlahiyat Fakültesi öğrencilerinin popüler dindarlık algıları ile umutsuzluk düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektedir. Çalışma, Düzce İlahiyat Fakültesi'nde öğrenim gören 432 öğrenci üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada yaş, cinsiyet, ekonomik durum ve aile tutumu gibi demografik değişkenlerin popüler dindarlık ve umutsuzluk üzerindeki etkileri analiz edilmiştir. Nicel araştırma yöntemi kullanılarak ilişkisel tarama modeli benimsenmiş, veriler anket yöntemiyle toplanmış ve istatistiksel analizler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bulgular, popüler dindarlık ile umutsuzluk arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmadığını göstermektedir (r=-0,017, p=0,730). Kadın öğrencilerin popüler dindarlık puanları erkeklerden yüksek çıkarken, cinsiyetin umutsuzluk düzeyi üzerinde belirgin bir etkisi saptanmamıştır. Yaş ilerledikçe popüler dindarlık ve umutsuzluk düzeylerinde azalma görülmüştür. Ekonomik durumu iyi olan öğrencilerin umutsuzluk düzeyleri daha düşük bulunurken, aile tutumu açısından demokratik aile yapısına sahip bireylerin daha az umutsuzluk yaşadığı belirlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, popüler dindarlık umutsuzluğu doğrudan etkilemese de, demografik değişkenler öğrencilerin dini yönelimleri ve psikolojik durumları üzerinde önemli rol oynamaktadır. Bu çalışma, gençlerin ruhsal sağlığını desteklemeye yönelik akademik ve sosyal girişimlere katkı sağlayabilir.

Conventional medical treatments of Parkinson's disease (PD) are effective on motor disturbances but may have little impact on nonmotor symptoms, especially psychiatric ones. Thus, even when motor symptomatology improves, patients might experience deterioration in their quality of life. We have shown that 3 years of active theatre is a valid complementary intervention for PD as it significantly improves the well-being of patients in comparison to patients undergoing conventional physiotherapy. Our aim was to replicate these findings while improving the efficacy of the treatment. We ran a single-blinded pilot study lasting 15 months on 24 subjects with moderate idiopathic PD. 12 were assigned to a theatre program in which patients underwent "emotional" training. Resumo: O desenho infantil é uma importante esfera de atividade simbólica que envolve aspectos cognitivos, afetivos, motores e sociais. A partir do ingresso na pré-escola, a criança tem, virtualmente, a possibilidade de desenvolver ou não tais aspectos. Na teoria histórico cultural, a escolarização recebe destaque em pesquisas que mostram mudanças qualitativas nos processos psíquicos dos sujeitos analisados. Em relação ao desenho, a escolarização potencialmente propicia situações em que a criança pode desenvolver-se de modo efetivo, elaborando, modificando e ampliando seu repertório gráfico. Background: Research has indicated that individuals with Alzheimer’s-type dementia (AD) can experience prolonged emotions, even when they cannot recall the eliciting event. Less is known about whether music can modify the emotional state of individuals with AD and whether emotions evoked by music linger in the absence of a declarative memory for the eliciting event. Objective: We examined the effects of participant-selected recorded music on self-reported feelings of emotion in individuals with AD, and whether these feelings persisted irrespective of declarative memory for the emotion-inducing stimuli.
