The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement Foundation Phase Life Skills curriculum (DBE, 2011) is composed of four focus areas: Beginning Knowledge; Personal and Social Well-being; Creative Arts; and Physical Education. These areas draw on a number of disciplines and this makes the curriculum dense. This density is, in turn, a challenge for teachers and teacher education. We perform an historical analysis of Life Skills curriculum documents from 1977 to the present and a content analysis of the CAPS document. Using we show that this curriculum is weakly classified and that epistemological orientations are blurred, if not rendered invisible. The specificity of different disciplinary lenses that have different objects of enquiry, methods of analysis, and criteria for truth claims is lost in an overemphasis on everyday knowledge. If teachers are not themselves schooled in the languages of the disciplines that underpin Life Skills they may not be able to give children access to them, nor are they likely to be able to help them understand how different parts of the system relate to one another.

V technology brings many advantages to the education arena. Educational research on the use of videogames has shown them to have great positive potential by using their interactive entertainment value (curiosity, fun challenge, etc.). Furthermore, there has been considerable success when videogames are specifically designed to address a specific problem or to teach a certain skill (Griffiths, 2002). Games such as ‘Darfur is Dying’ and ‘World Without Oil’ highlight that games playing has already developed well beyond the interests of the stereotypical teenager. Video and computer-based games sometimes possess advantages not present in other learning strategies. For example, simulations provide the ability to choose different solutions to a difficult problem and then see the affect those decisions in a fictional game. Despite the limited academic focus on the context of Official Language Schools (OLSs), these institutions play a crucial role in the formal education system, which are exclusively dedicated to foreign language teaching across various modalities in Andalusia, where ten different languages are taught. The main aim of this study is to perform an analysis the following two specific aspects: first, a descriptive analysis of the digital competence of 105 OLS teachers, and, second, a contrastive analysis examining potential differences in digital competence based on the language and teaching modalities (e.g., faceto-face vs. blended learning). This study uses the DigCompEdu framework to evaluate the digital skills of the teachers, revealing that, while they receive some training in digital competence, the overall level is only moderate, indicating a significant need for further professional development. Notably, the study highlights that the teachers' ability to convey the importance of digital tools for educational purposes is a crucial area, particularly in an environment where digital natives and immigrants coexist, presenting an intergenerational digital divide. The contrastive analysis shows no significant differences in digital competence based on language or modality, pointing to the lack of specialized training for blended learning teachers, who must rely heavily on technology in their work. This study suggests future research should focus on the digital competence of students, considering age as a potential influential factor in language learning, and recommends designing a tailored digital competence training plan for OLS teachers based on the DigCompEdu framework, which could benefit foreign language educators broadly.

This study investigated the effect of instructional materials on the teaching and learning of social studies in secondary schools in Aba south Local Government Area of Abia State. The research was guided with three purposes, three research questions and hypothesis. Survey design was adopted and both students and teachers constituted the population for study. A sample of hundred subjects w’as drawn from five schools and was administered questionnaires. Data collected was analyzed using simple percentage (%) for research question and chi square for hypothesis. However, the three hypothesis were tested at 0.05 level of significance and were all rejected. Mineral kalsium berperan penting dalam pemeliharaan fungsi tubuh, sedangkan Timbal salah satu logam berat berbahaya. Penelitian ditujukan untuk penentuan kadar Kalsium dan Timbal dari beberapa depot air isi ulang di Medan. Kompleksometri kalsium dan SSA timbal sebagai metode penetapan kadar masing-masing. Penelitian menunjukkan kadar kalsium 10,3 – 29,3 mg/L, koefisien korelasi 0,9928, dan tidak ditemukan Timbal pada air minum isi ulang. Kadar kalsium tak memenuhi syarat, sedangkan kadar timbal masih memenuhi syarat menurut WHO.

This article investigated the students’ responses to narrative text through the animated film. The place of this study was one of the public schools in Yogyakarta Province. The subject of this study was eleventh-grade students. This study was implemented in three phases, e.g., the reconnaissance process, cycle one, and cycle two. The stages conducted in this study contained four steps: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Moreover, the type of data of this study was qualitative data. El presente trabajo es un artículo de revisión que pretende abordar un tema tan controvertido como actual: la posible asociación causal que se ha querido establecer entre el autismo y las vacunas infantiles. A partir de la última década del siglo XX se producen una serie de cambios en la clasificación, nomenclatura y criterios diagnósticos del autismo. Los hallazgos de estudios epidemiológicos llevados a cabo bajo estos nuevos ponderados han revelado que las tasas de prevalencia del autismo son en la actualidad muy superiores a las de hace 15 años. Entre los factores que se esgrimen para explicar este fenómeno están las vacunas, y entre los mecanismos que se invocan para tratar de inculpar a las vacunas en la etiología del autismo están el exceso de mercurio derivado del tiomersal que se emplea como conservante de las mismas y procesos autoinmunes que de forma directa o indirectamente actúan sobre el SNC, induciendo lesiones a nivel de la mucosa intestinal, lo cual favorecerá la absorción de macromoléculas, antígenos y toxinas que una vez en el torrente sanguíneo llegarían al SNC produciendo allí las lesiones responsables de la génesis del autismo.

The Alternative Learning System (ALS) program plays a crucial role in enhancing the literacy among persons deprived of liberty (PDLs). This initiative not only addresses educational gaps but also fosters personal growth and social reintegration. There have been various studies that looked at the effectiveness of different approaches and methodologies in improving the literacy of ALS students. However, there is a dearth of studies investigating different effective approaches that are used for PDLs, especially those who are enrolled in ALS. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Project SCALE (Scaffolded Chart-Based Approach for Literacy Enhancement) in improving the literacy of incarcerated ALS students. Project SCALE is an innovative approach that incorporates interactive learning with focus on using scaffolded learning approach through structure table charts to equip the students with understanding of the components of English sentences and improve their writing skills. Project SCALE is innovative as it integrates different educational strategies to respond to the research problem. The integration of gradual scaffolding approach, structured chart usage, and interactive individual and group activities informs a comprehensive approach in teaching writing skills for the targeted students. This approach targeted both the desired specific learning outcomes and promoted collaboration among the students which is important in the students' community life. The innovation was tested in three LS1 English competencies that were not mastered by the students after a quarter period. Using a quasi-experimental research design, data was gathered from the pre-test and post-test scores of the participants. Utilizing t-test, a significant difference is found comparing the means of the pre-test and post-test scores of the participants. The post-test scores are significantly higher than the pretest scores suggesting that the intervention was effective, so it is recommended that the project be widely adapted, and its concept be used for other ALS subjects.

In the current study, we investigated the psychometric properties of a meaningful measure of career development among Latina/o students. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to evaluate structural validity of the Vocational Outcome Expectations scale. The results supported a modest one-factor structure for the VOE scale. Internal consistency was good as measured by coefficient alpha. Findings provide support for the reliability and validity of the VOE with Latina/o students. A discussion regarding the usefulness of this measure of career development is provided.

There has been a rapid increase in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in our educational system. This descriptive, comparative, and correlational study investigated the use of AI-powered tools and examined 86 teachers' efficiency and 274 students' performance in a private Catholic school in Bacolod City, Philippines. The researcher developed a researcher-made questionnaire to gather the data. Major findings revealed that teachers used AI less frequently, often used it for tutoring, with ChatGPT being a popular choice. Students, on the other hand, reported using AI weekly, primarily for tutoring. While AI integration seemed to enhance teacher efficiency, male teachers perceived themselves as more efficient than females. Generally, the results show that AI contributes to an efficient teaching process with a mean score of 3.60, verbally interpreted as somewhat efficient. The results revealed that AI had a significant improvement on both male and female students. Interestingly, no significant differences were found in teacher efficiency and student performance when grouped according to sex using Mann-Whitney U-test. Using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, the data revealed no correlation between the student performance in AI and the teachers' efficiency in AI. In light of these findings, the study recommends implementing programs and training to help teachers use AI more effectively and engage students. Additionally, it emphasizes the need to address any barriers educators may face in adopting AI, create supportive environments with equitable access to AI resources, and implement strategies to address potential gender biases in AI adoption.

Climate adaptation planning requires new ways of thinking and approaching the analysis of risks. Such thinking needs to be systemic in nature and practice/action-oriented while respecting the complexity of the physical and social sciences. Through this chapter on climate tipping points in Botswana, it is proposed that a generic and practice-oriented analysis framework be applied with a mathematical foundation including modeling methods based on complex science. The objective is to promote a framework that privileges a worldview to avoid biased and partial explanations of risks. A social cognitive intervention was developed and delivered as a credit course to improve mental distress of university students, based on findings in a previous health survey showing notable mental distress among future teachers in Hungary in 2007. The intervention included increasing information on psychoactive substances used for stress reduction; skills development in stress reduction methods; improving skills in communication and problem-solving. All students who participated in the previous health survey were targeted. Mental status of the participants was assessed by a questionnaire before (n: 128, 22% male, mean age 23.21 years) and after (n: 148, 30% male, mean age 23.54 years) the intervention. Specifically, self-efficacy as outcome was approximated by a trait measure (sense of coherence); psychological distress was measured by the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg et al., 1997. The validity of two versions of the GHQ in the WHO study of mental illness in general health care. Psychological Medicine, 27,[191][192][193][194][195][196][197] after the intervention compared with that before. After the intervention, psychological distress was reduced among the participants (p: 0.013). Non-significant improvement occurred in the mean score for sense of coherence (from a mean 60.8 points before to 61.4 points after, p: 0.688). The intervention produced a modest but significant decrease in psychological distress in students at a cost of 54 US$ per 1 point improvement in mental distress. The intervention, a first example of the translation of the social cognitive theory into practice among students in higher education can be integrated into the curriculum as a standardized optional course.

The descriptive survey method is used for data collection using emotional maturity scale constructed and standardized by M. Bhargava and Y. The findings of the study reported that there is a negative relationship between emotional maturity and intelligence among the secondary school students of whole sample of both the districts.

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to critically analyze the experiences and practices of Inland Empire urban school principals as they work to close the African American achievement gap. The achievement gap begins in elementary school and continues to persist throughout elementary and secondary schools producing differences in high school graduation rates, college and career attainment, and ultimately socio-economic differences in income between various racial and ethnic groups. We know the impact of school principals on student achievement is significant. The literature demonstrates that school principals play a key role in developing the structures and systems necessary to improve the outcomes for urban schools and more specifically African American students. Ten school principals from a large urban Inland Empire school district participated in the study and served to provide their lived experiences while leading diverse schools. Findings indicated three emergent themes: (1) relationship builders, (2) caring environments, and (3) courageous leadership were influential in principals establishing and maintaining a school that was sensitive to the needs of African American students. Another major finding from the study demonstrated the impact that race still plays within the public school setting. Several of the study participants expressed their struggles with providing overt support of African American students.

O processo de compartilhar conhecimento entre os indivíduos ou grupos de uma organização é muito importante para o desempenho organizacional, por isso há um crescente interesse de pesquisadores sobre esse tema. Os indivíduos e grupos, nas organizações, tem que compartilhar conhecimento para manter e melhorar a vantagem competitiva. O Projeto Chiquitos na Chiquitania Boliviana sob a ótica da Extensão Universitária, proposto pela Universidade Técnica Particular de Loja (Equador) e da Universidade Católica Boliviana "San Pablo" objetiva através de ambientes tecnologicamente apropriados difundir a pesquisa e impulsionar o desenvolvimento de uma região remota e socialmente carente. Na busca pelo alcance desse objetivo há compartilhamento do conhecimento entre os membros do projeto. O estudo parte da pergunta de pesquisa: "Como acontece o processo de compartilhar conhecimento em um projeto de extensão universitária?". Por meio de estudo de caso, os resultados obtidos demonstram que o compartilamento ocorre de três formas, por meio de equipes estruturadas, TICs e canais de comunicação informais. Conclui-se que as formas atendem adequadamente as necessidades do projeto, porém os membros sugerem reuniões ao ar livre, maior envolvimento da equipe nas reuniões e, melhor serviço de internet.

Background: Paramedic education has evolved in recent times from vocational post-employment to tertiary pre-employment supplemented by clinical placement. Simulation is advocated as a means of transferring learned skills to clinical practice. Sole reliance of simulation learning using mannequin-based models may not be sufficient to prepare students for variance in human anatomy. In 2012, we trialled the use of fresh frozen human cadavers to supplement undergraduate paramedic procedural skill training. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether cadaveric training is an effective adjunct to mannequin simulation and clinical placement. Methods: A multi-method approach was adopted. The first step involved a Delphi methodology to formulate and validate the evaluation instrument. The instrument comprised of knowledge-based MCQs, Likert for self-evaluation of procedural skills and behaviours, and open answer. The second step involved a pre-post evaluation of the 2013 cadaveric training. Results: One hundred and fourteen students attended the workshop and 96 evaluations were included in the analysis, representing a return rate of 84%. There was statistically significant improved anatomical knowledge after the workshop. Students' self-rated confidence in performing procedural skills on real patients improved significantly after the workshop: inserting laryngeal mask (MD 0.667), oropharyngeal (MD 0.198) and nasopharyngeal (MD 0.600) airways, performing Bag-Valve-Mask (MD 0.379), double (MD 0.344) and triple (MD 0.326,) airway manoeuvre, doing 12-lead electrocardiography (MD 0.729), using laryngoscope (MD 0.726), using Magill W forceps to remove foreign body (MD 0.632), attempting thoracocentesis (MD 1.240), and putting on a traction splint (MD 0.865). The students commented that the workshop provided context to their theoretical knowledge and that they gained an appreciation of the differences in normal tissue variation. Following engagement in/ completion of the workshop, students were more aware of their own clinical and non-clinical competencies. The paramedic profession has evolved beyond patient transport with minimal intervention to providing comprehensive both emergency and non-emergency medical care. With limited availability of clinical placements for undergraduate paramedic training, there is an increasing demand on universities to provide suitable alternatives. Our findings suggested that cadaveric training using fresh frozen cadavers provides an effective adjunct to simulated learning and clinical placements.

September 28, 2016, marked the 50th anniversary of the Connecticut Mental Health Center, a state-owned and state-operated joint venture between the state and Yale University built and sustained with federal, state, and university funds. Collaboration across these entities has produced a wide array of clinical, educational, and research initiatives, a few of which are described in this column. The missions of clinical care, research, and education remain the foundation for an organization that serves 5,000 individuals each year who are poor and who experience serious mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Social media has been blamed for distracting and reducing students' engagement in learning. However, there are limited studies that recommend the appropriate strategy of using social media for students. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose a conceptual framework that linked the influence of high academic achievers' social media usage with types of social media content on students' learning. A qualitative methodology will be employed to gain in-depth understanding of the high academic achievers' purpose of using social media, time spent on social media and types of social media contents that interest them. Based on purposive sampling technique, a sample of high academic achievers pursuing their study in a public university will be selected and interviewed until the data reach saturation. The interview data will be analyzed by using thematic analysis to develop codes and themes in explaining the phenomenon. The findings of this study are believed to be useful in developing a recommendation and effective strategy to help students manage their social media usage and more importantly benefit from it for their learning.

O presente trabalho de natureza qualitativa descritiva apresenta o panorama do circo social na cidade de Uberlândia/MG (Brasil), por meio de dois projetos sociais. O objetivo foi analisar a visão de seis educadores acerca dos principais desafios, potencialidades e entraves ao desenvolvimento do circo social na realidade brasileira. Os resultados apontaram a relevância da convivência diária e dos vínculos afetivos como elementos fundamentais na construção de relações de confiança e amizade. Além disso, foram identificados como desafios à formação dos educadores, a falta de investimento financeiro nos projetos, além da reduzida participação das famílias nas atividades implementadas.

The irruption of artificial intelligence (AI) in all areas of our lives is a reality to which the university, as an institution of higher education, must respond prudently, but also with no hesitation. This paper discusses the potential that resources based on AI presents as potential reviewers of scientific articles in a hypothetical peer review of already published articles. Using different models (GPT-3.5 and GPT-4) and platforms (ChatPDF and Bing), we obtained three full reviews, both qualitative and quantitative, for each of the five articles examined, thus being able to delineate and contrast the results of all of them in terms of the human reviews that these same articles received at the time. The evidence found highlights the extent to which we can and should rely on generative language models to support our decisions as qualified experts in our field. This paper uses several different perspectives to investigate how students participate in university life. In the first section we propose a few conceptual and taxonomic stipulations on the different ways of participating. A number of different modes of participation are analyzed and subsequently divided into three typologies: the first distinguishes among four generic types of participation; the second sets the modes of student participation at the university depending on the purpose; and the third typology uses a criterion referring to the ways such participation is carried out. In the second section, we place participation at the university within a broader framework of young people's participation in general. We then present data on young people's participation and the typology of the political activism they most often carry out and on the knowledge, use, and valuation of certain kinds of systems of student participation at the university. The third section presents two studies on what students think about participation. In the last section, we formulate a set of questions open for debate and reflection on this topic.

Background: Home food inventories provide an efficient method for assessing home food availability; however, few are validated. The present study's aim was to develop and validate a home food inventory that is easily completed by research participants in their homes and includes a comprehensive range of both healthful and less healthful foods that are associated with obesity. A home food inventory (HFI) was developed and tested with two samples. Sample 1 included 51 adult participants and six trained research staff who independently completed the HFI in participants' homes. Sample 2 included 342 families in which parents completed the HFI and the Diet History Questionnaire (DHQ) and students completed three 24-hour dietary recall interviews. HFI items assessed 13 major food categories as well as two categories assessing readyaccess to foods in the kitchen and the refrigerator. An obesogenic household food availability score was also created. To assess criterion validity, participants' and research staffs' assessment of home food availability were compared (staff = gold standard). Criterion validity was evaluated with kappa, sensitivity, and specificity. Construct validity was assessed with correlations of five HFI major food category scores with servings of the same foods and associated nutrients from the DHQ and dietary recalls. Results: Kappa statistics for all 13 major food categories and the two ready-access categories ranged from 0.61 to 0.83, indicating substantial agreement. Sensitivity ranged from 0.69 to 0.89, and specificity ranged from 0.86 to 0.95. Spearman correlations between staff and participant major food category scores ranged from 0.71 to 0.97. Correlations between the HFI scores and food group servings and nutrients on the DHQ (parents) were all significant (p < .05) while about half of associations between the HFI and dietary recall interviews (adolescents) were significant (p < .05). The obesogenic home food availability score was significantly associated (p < .05) with energy intake of both parents and adolescents. This new home food inventory is valid, participant-friendly, and may be useful for community-based behavioral nutrition and obesity prevention research. The inventory builds on previous measures by including a wide range of healthful and less healthful foods rather than foods targeted for a specific intervention.

Historically, much longitudinal research on teacher development has relied on general stage theories, in the tradition of and exemplified by . However, stage theories of human development and of teacher development have been criticized . As Watzke (2007) argues, a stage theory "deemphasizes its complicated and multi-dimensional nature" (p. 119) by oversimplifying developmental sequences and the overcoming of obstacles through which people mature. Stage theories of human development and teacher development also tend to individualize conceptual growth with insufficient attention to the environmental factors that provide specific challenges to teachers in different settings. One important yet insufficiently investigated environmental factor in theorizing teacher development concerns the sorts of relationships with others that may strongly influence a teacher's developmental trajectory. Power dynamics and social positioning also come into play, per Davies and Harré's positioning theory . reference to view professional identity development as a form of argument "where identity positioning involves making claims about holders of given social roles. … )" (pp. 3-4). The resulting narrative creates an identity trajectory (McAlpine & Amundsen, 2011) through which teachers emplot their various experiences into a coherent narrative that typically justifies their teaching decisions. Such fluid dynamics disturb the assumptions behind the theorizing of general stages of teacher development. In order to explore teacher development, longitudinal research is needed. Yet longitudinal research takes years to undertake and is typically limited to around two years, often through limited methods such as surveys. There are some exceptions (e.g., that involve observations and interviews over greater spans of time. Given how rarely studies produce rich data beyond a two-year span, it's likely that the field still awaits a robust theory of teacher development and more specifically, English teacher development as situated within institutional contexts. Our study is designed to contribute to the theorizing of contextualized teacher development. We extrapolate from Vygotsky's principal attention to children and adolescents in order to apply his concepts to the maturation of adults undertaking teaching careers . argued that growth requires obstacles to overcome, i.e., those barriers that stand in the way of progress toward the achievement of equilibrium or homeostasis, which is argued by Damasio (2021) to be a key developmental goal. Without an obstacle to overcome, there would be nothing to develop against, and development would cease . This is a study about the didactical organization of a research based group of activities designed using APOS theory to help university students make constructions needed to understand and graph two-variable functions, but found to be lacking in previous studies. The model of the “moments of study” of the Anthropological Theory of Didactics is applied to analyze the activities in terms of their institutional viability.

Theory is used to pose and test a conjecture of mental constructions that may be used to understand the relation between integrals of two variable functions over rectangles and corresponding Riemann sums. Interviews with ten students who had just finished a multivariable calculus course showed that the conjectured mental constructions are necessary.
