"Prominent Books, That Were Imported From The Ukrainian Chernihiv Typography To The Hungarian Kingdom In The 18 Th Century"
Chernihiv was a significant, powerful Principality in the Kyivan Ruś, then a cultural center. From the late 17th century, it was under the role of the Russian Tsardom. The typography of the Troicko-Ilyinsky Monastery was very famous throughout the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. This was the reason why the Monastery of the Basilians in Hungary deliberately bought these books. It proves that Chernihiv's reputation was great in the West. This paper focuses on the sources of the books of the Basilians’ Monastery in Máriapócs, Hungary.
Various Slavic peoples inhabited the former Hungarian Kingdom, and some followed Byzantine-rite Christianity: Serbs were Orthodox, and Transcarpathian Rusyn-Ukrainians were Uniates. The latter had their famous pilgrimage center Mariapócs, in the East part of the country. This monastery and other church book collections were ruined by the communists in the 1950-ies, albeit a significant part of the books were put in the great state libraries, and the research fellow of the Debrecen University Library, Eszter Ojtozi, investigated them and reconstructed the former church collections. Later, after the collapse of the socialist regime, the Byzantine Catholic (Uniate) Theological College was reestablished in the city of Nyíregyháza (East Hungary), and it took care of the collection of old printed Cyrillic Books. Ojtozi published a special monograph on it, too. Later, new investigations still contributed to the descriptions of the items, but no new copy has yet been discovered. Hence, we have learned about four copies of old printed Cyrillic books, printed in Chernihiv and described by E. Ojtozi. They are as follows: 1) Dmytry Rostovsky – Tuptalo, Danila Savvich: Runo oroshennoe prechastaya i predlagosovennaya Děva Mariya… 1702 — 2) Maksimovič, Ioann: Bogorodice Děvo. 1707. — 3) Maksimovič, Ioann: Theatron ili pozor nravouchitelny… 1708.  — 4) Psalter 1761. — The Troitsko-Ilyinsky Monastery published all four books in Chernihiv. These books were purchased here, in Hungary, by the Basilian Monks of the Máriapócs Monastery, as is documented by marginal inscriptions and some other data, too.

Key Note Presentation: “Harnessing the Power of Youthful Beauty: Women and Cosmetic Culture in Early Modern Europe” | Erin Griffey, University of Auckland

The article follows The Tempest’s nexus of ocean and emotion for new ways of understanding its place in an expanding, early colonial world. Interconnecting early modern scholarship on oceans, emotion, and race, the article juxtaposes The Tempest’s privileging of white attachments and oceanic suffering with the fates of globally displaced African and indigenous persons summoned through Sycorax and Caliban. It also argues that the play renders salient a westward and potentially deadly route of travel for Prospero by partially aligning his journey with Magellan’s and Drake’s desired circumnavigations – their crossings of the Mare Pacifico, the ‘peaceful ocean,’ such as teased by Prospero’s pleas for “gentle breath” in the Epilogue. Suggesting that The Tempest’s geographical-cum-affective multi-referentiality reflects shifting notions of globality and precarious sea-travel in an early colonial world, the article opens up The Tempest to new global perspectives whilst contributing to diversifying early modern scholarship’s own oceanic and affective coordinates.

Fazıl Ahmed Pasha’s experiences in Erzurum and Damascus not only shaped his future leadership as a grand vizier but exemplified the practical implementation of reform policies during the “Köprülü Era.” His career serves as a compelling case study of how provincial governance functioned both as a mechanism for imperial consolidation and as a space for negotiation between the central authority and its peripheries, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the Ottoman Empire’s administrative evolution in the early modern period.

Sharon L. Jansen\u27s study of women and popular resistance in the reign of Henry VIII is an important work that breaks new ground and will be of value to a wide range of scholars. It is scrupulously well researched and shows a thorough grounding in the secondary literature on the politics of early Tudor England, women\u27s history, and feminist theory. Jansen focuses on four women, all of whom were executed for treason in the reign of Henry VIII: Elizabeth Wood, Margaret Cheyne, Elizabeth Barton, and Mabel Brigge. Yet none of these women had posed a direct, physical threat to the king. They had taken no part in armed rebellion. The government of Henry VIII, however, perceived them as a threat to stability of the realm. While Jansen admits that it is difficult to separate politics from religion in the reign of Henry VIII, her study examines women whose protest emphasized concerns about legitimate authority and rightful rule. Although King John died of dysentery in 1216, three Renaissance dramas, John Bale's King Johan, The Troublesome Reign of King John, and Shakespeare's King John, reflect the influence of late medieval legends that John was dramatically poisoned. Bale and the anonymous author of The Troublesome Reign emphasize the horror of the king's death, dwelling upon his role as a religious leader; Shakespeare, however, separates John from the kingship, focusing our attention upon a frightened man. This separation echoes the medieval political theory that the kingship is composed of two bodies.' By deliberately stripping away the Christian images that surround John's death in the earlier plays, Shakespeare establishes a contrast between John the man (the body natural) and the ideal of kingship (the body politic), the patriotic ideal enunciated by Faulconbridge. Examination of the medieval chronicles and the two early plays demonstrates that Shakespeare, although concerned about the responsibilities of the ruler, removes kingship from a religious context, turning King John into a more political statement. I King John's reign (1199-1216) was known most notably for its problems. These included the mysterious death of his nephew Arthur, a threatened French invasion, a civil war with the barons, and a papal interdict. John himself was excommunicated, and in making his peace with Pope Innocent III he turned England into a papal fief. In recent decades, ideas of connectivity, exchange, and a productive and at times conflictive interface between Christians, Jews, and Muslims, have dominated the scholarship on the early modern Mediterranean. One of the phenomena that best embodies these themes is apocalyptic thought and practice. In a recent article, Ottoman historian Cornell Fleischer proposed the idea of a discrete Mediterranean apocalyptic phenomenon in the early modern period.1 Tracing the entangled nature of Muslim and Christian apocalyptic beliefs that circulated after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Fleischer argued that in the Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry for recognition as legitimate claimants to the world empire of the last age of history, prophecies became central to contemporary understandings of history and politics. Fleischer's analysis centred primarily on the mid-fifteenth to the first three decades of the sixteenth century, after which he sees the apocalyptic phenomenon wane (at least in the Ottoman context). Drawing from Fleischer's proposition, this introduction delineates the main contours of apocalyptic beliefs and practices in the different geographic, cultural, and political areas around the early modern Mediterranean basin: a shared and competing idea of universal empire to which all Mediterranean powers aspired, the conversion of infidels before the End Times, messianism as a political ideal in the figure of a Hidden King, among others, to argue for a veritable Mediterranean apocalyptic phenomenon between the fifteenth (and one could even extend it as far back as the thirteenth century) and the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. While it is impossible to cover all aspects of early modern apocalypticism in this essay, this introduction aims to provide a general Mediterranean context in which the apocalyptic texts presented in this volume are to be located.

Auf der 1584 im Itinerarium per nonnullas Galliae Belgicae partes in Antwerpen publizierten Radierung mit der sog. Igeler Säule (Abb. 1) betrachtet eine Figur in zeitgenössischem Kostüm aufmerksam den monumentalen Baukörper des Grabmals der Secundinier. Dabei handelt es sich um eines der seltenen bis heute in situ erhaltenen römischen Grabmonumente im deutschsprachigen Raum, dessen immense Höhe in der Gegenüberstellung mit der Figur deutlich wird. Die Radierung vermittelt anschaulich die charakteristischen Gestaltungsmerkmale der sog. Pfeilermonumente, eines Grabmaltypus, der in römischer Zeit an Rhein und Mosel weit verbreitet war und dessen bedeutendster Vertreter das dargestellte, etwa 23 m hohe, im 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. bei Trier aufgestellte Bauwerk ist. 1 Zu den Hauptmerkmalen dieser Gattung zählen der Verzicht auf freistehende Säulen im Obergeschoss und die bildliche Darstellung der Verstorbenen im Relief. 2 Ferner geht aus der am Grabmal angebrachten Inschrift hervor, dass es sich bei den Inhaber:innen um Angehörige der reichen Tuchhändlerfamilie der Secundinier handelte. Diese epigraphischen Angaben sind in der Druckgraphik mitsamt ihren Fehlstellen und den Quaderfugen sowohl als Teil des Monuments selbst als auch -in einer nahsichtigen Vergrößerung in den Vordergrund gestellt -in der unteren Bildpartie detailgetreu wiedergegeben. 3 Während die obere Ansicht demnach die Dimensionen und das Erscheinungsbild des gesamten antiken Grabmonuments in seinem damals gegenwärtigen, durch spätmittelalterliche Architektur charakterisierten räumlichen Kontext festhält, lenkt die ‚Nahaufnahme' des Inschriftenreliefs die Aufmerksamkeit auf den Erhaltungszustand des antiken Artefakts und ermöglicht zugleich das intensive Studium der leicht beschädigten Textzeilen sowie die damit einhergehende Identifizierung der hier bestatteten Familie. Ausgehend von der kulturellen Relevanz, welche antiken Artefakten in der Frühen Neuzeit zukam, widmet sich der interdisziplinäre Band jenen druckgraphischen Werken, die ab dem 16. Jahrhundert in intensiver künstlerischer Auseinandersetzung mit den römischen Altertümern nördlich der Alpen entstanden. Aus einer archäologisch-kunsthistorischen Perspektive fokussieren die Autor:innen gezielt jene komplexen ästhetischen Strategien der Druckgraphiken, in denen sich in einem dynamischen Spannungsfeld von Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, von ‚Eigenem‘ und ‚Fremdem‘ sowie von Imagination und Wirklichkeit das historische Wechselverhältnis zwischen Formen der Identitätsstiftung und der künstlerischen Praxis manifestiert. In diesem Kontext analysieren die Beiträge exemplarisch sowohl die unterschiedlichen Strategien der Visualisierung nordalpiner Antiken als auch die differenzierten Prozesse ihrer Transformation und programmatischen Aneignung.

With this gathering, we are recalling the moment when Count Bernardin Taiapiera of Šibenik, the Venetian diplomat Pietro Zeno, and the Ottoman emin Džafer Çelebi signed the agreement to establish gabela and salt warehouses in Mandalina near Šibenik. It was on April 10, 1525.
The anniversary-inspired occasion for this gathering was initially reinforced by the assumption that the aforementioned agreement significantly shaped or redirected Venetian-Ottoman relations in the broader Šibenik area (which had been part of Venetian Dalmatia since 1412) and Skradin (which became part of the Ottoman frontier province in 1522). Until then, the direct encounters and indirect contacts between the people of Šibenik and the Ottomans had been marked by the looming Ottoman military threat, which first cast its shadow over Šibenik in 1415. A chronic atmosphere of fear took hold following the Ottoman incursion of 1468, while lasting fractures in the demographic and economic structure of the Šibenik commune emerged with the destruction and abandonment of villages on the fringes of the Šibenik district during the Venetian-Ottoman War of 1499–1502. When Vlach herders settled the depopulated estates in the 1520s, Šibenik's salt was recognized as a potential catalyst for establishing trade relations between Ottoman and Venetian subjects.
The 1525 agreement granted the Šibenik commune an economic boost, at least until the War of Cyprus. For us, however, its contents have provided scholarly momentum—or, in other words, a foundation for examining various aspects of Venetian-Ottoman relations in the Šibenik-Skradin borderlands from the 15th to the 18th century. The outlines and titles of the presentations, along with the expertise of their authors, serve as a guarantee for filling many historiographical gaps, opening new research perspectives, and, of this we are certain, fostering a fruitful discussion.

El artículo muestra la integración documental que en materia contable desplegó el Erario regio del Nuevo Reino de Granada a finales del siglo XVIII. Para ello se realiza un estudio de caso a partir de la caja real de Cartago, con base en la documentación contable que tuvo que presentar el oficial real de dicha tesorería ante el Tribunal de Cuentas de Santafé de Bogotá en 1798. Un procedimiento que permite observar la estructuración jerárquica y el control que había logrado la autoridad fiscal a partir de la supervisión contable.

Se presentan informes de los intendentes novohispanos sobre los bosques existentes en cada provincia y la forma en que la población hacía uso de ellos. Se destacan métodos de conservación, formas de aprovechar los recursos maderables y los problemas ambientales derivados de la sobreexplotación.

He also writes that "impressions of seals on clay tags and on circular tokens show how the rulers and traders actually used their seals and provide insight into commercial procedures and the control of trade. Circular tokens with the impressions from square stamp seals on one of both sides were never attached to bundles of goods. The essay analyses the statistical data on cholera mortality in the the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, received in Naples when the epidemic wave of 1836-37 was drawing to a close. On the basis of these figures, the government certainly had a clear perception of the incidence of the disease in the various districts, and could use them for appropriate health policy assessments. A choice that was made at the time, and which remained unchanged, was to secrete the statistical data collected. The reasons behind this decision probably lay in the desire to conceal the very heavy death toll from public opinion at home and abroad, in an attempt to accredit the image of a wise, dynamic and effective government in containing the effects of the disease. There was perhaps also the fear that the internal disclosure of the real massacres that cholera had wrought, especially in certain provinces, could revive the never-quenched rumours of poisoning, with the related problems of public order, and the insidious political implications that cholera had provoked. For these reasons, the statistics collected remained buried in administrative offices and were never made public. Re-examined now, almost two centuries later, and interpreted also in the light of the distorting mechanisms that invalidated their compilation, the figures make it possible to ascertain the overall mortality in the Kingdom, the relationship between the mortality rates of the two epidemic waves and the mortality rates of the various provinces. Among other things, they allow us to state that, although it was, chronologically, the last of the Italian states to experience the aggression of cholera, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was also the one that reported, at the end of the epidemic, the heaviest death toll, both in absolute values and in relation to the population.

The breadth of authoritative summaries on the body culture history often renders certain topics ‘invisible’ if they are overlooked or deemed unimportant by their authors. One such neglected topic is the European body culture between Antiquity and the modern period, that is, in the Middle Ages. this oversight is significant, because the medieval period remains an important inspiration for contemporary cultural processes and the lack of reliable data on european body-cultural heritage fuels the spread of invented traditions harnessed for political goals. this article aims to help vindicate the medieval body culture by surveying historical sources revealing both its breadth anddepth, as well as challenging the supposed discontinuity between the Middle Ages andthe adjacent periods – Antiquity and Modernity. through a literature review and sampling of primary historical sources, four categories of sources are distinguished and characterised: ‘fight books’, ‘princely mirrors’, ‘dietaries’, and ‘ego-documents’. By analysing these texts together for the first time, the study revealed new information about medieval body culture and its connections to other historical periods, underscoring theneed for further research and an updated history of European body culture, possibly rethinking also the current omission of the Middle ages from European sport history.

This paper aims to gain a better understanding of the ethics of Galeotto Marzio da Narni, a highly original 15th-century philosopher. Based on his censure and the texts that we have preserved by him, we attempt to bring out the most radical elements of his ethics, namely principally the possibility of attaining salvation in any religion and, more generally, his theory of predestination, in which ethical acts become simply signs of it. It is therefore understandable that his ethics are similar in some respects to the Protestant ethics that would become the bête noire of the Catholic authorities.

Abstract
The architecture of the first convents of the mendicant orders, Minors and Preachers, is a topic widely debated in historiography,
starting with the founding studies by Corrado Bozzoni on Franciscan architecture in central Italy. While some areas are better known today for the important studies carried out on architecture in the last decades of the 20th century, the Piedmontese territory, in the face of in-depth knowledge focused on the religious history of the orders and early settlements, suffers from the material absence of much of the early architecture. The buildings that are still preserved today, mainly Dominican, are the result of monumental construction works that matured between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century, or in some instances, the mid-14th century.
The first part of the contribution presents a synopsis of the convents situated within the broad subalpine region between the mid- and late 13th century. These settlements extend as far as the Lombard plain and approach the Ligurian Apennines, following the original religious administrative subdivision. The two case studies presented in detail are followed by a reconstruction of the earliest evidence of the churches of San Francesco in Cuneo, where recent excavations have brought to light some parts of the primitive architectural layout. In San Giovanni di Saluzzo, some unpublished architectural parts, which have re-emerged
during the restoration work in progress, have made it possible to put forward hypotheses to revise what has been proposed so far on the early construction phases of the church.

The printing houses of Orthodox Confraternities and their schools were phenomena of the civil (bourgeois) society that have adopted European cultural influences – as even some Russian historians are of this opinion. In historiography, these processes of cultural development of the early modern era are named “confessionalization”, which took place on Polish, Ukrainian, and Lithuanian (in the broad sense) lands but never took place on Russian lands. Therefore, European civil culture has its roots in Ukrainian lands, while Russians need to study it as a foreign and non-local phenomenon. -- Confessionalization stays in the focus of the work because the earlier literature did not pay enough attention to it. The evolution of printing and the activity of the brotherhoods in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth are considered phenomena of Orthodox Confessionalization in the Rzeczpospolyta. Thus, the donating activity of Petro Mohyla was not merely providing his homeland with typographical equipment and staff, but also a phenomenon of Confessionalization. -- Consequences: we modify the concept of Piccio in this way: Slavia Muscovia and Slavia Europeana. For the European culture was a native culture of the peoples inhabited the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, even the East-Slavic Ruthenian peoples of the Rzeczpospolyta developed on the ways of the European cultural processes (see the case of Confessionalization), rooted in the European culture naturally, already in the heydays of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16-17 cc (Földvári, 2021.). The Muscovian culture was a different, foreign one; thus, even in the 18th century, Tsar Peter the Great forced his people to learn Europeanization, which was a strange phenomenon for them.

A imigração luso-brasileira teve um peso decisivo na vida económica, social e cultural do Rio da Prata, durante o período colonial. No domínio artístico, a ourivesaria, a par do mobiliário e da escultura, atesta de forma clara a especificidade do contributo português, determinante na formação de inúmeras gerações de artífices rioplatenses, e que teve as suas consequências ao nível do gosto, adquirindo aspetos estilísticos muito próprios. A cidade da Santíssima Trindade e Porto de Santa Maria de Buenos Aires foi, durante os séculos XVII e XVIII, uma plataforma comercial de primordial importância, visto ser o único ponto de conexão dos territórios espanhóis com a Europa pela via atlântica. Buenos Aires era, acima de tudo, uma cidade portuária. Dessa abertura ao rio advém algumas das suas características mais determinantes: culturalmente eclética, a cidade tornar-se-á o ponto de penetração de influências, técnicas e modelos europeus. No domínio da ourivesaria, esse ecletismo levou a que a produção da região de Buenos Aires fosse claramente distinta da de outros territórios da América espanhola. Para tal terá contribuído a importação de peças provenientes de Espanha, atestada através de vários documentos em que funcionários da Coroa espanhola requerem autorização para trazer joias e prataria, importação esta que no século XIX se estende a outros países europeus, entre os quais Portugal. Mas mais determinante foi, sem dúvida, a presença em Buenos Aires de ourives vindos de Espanha, Portugal, França, Itália, Inglaterra, e ainda de vários territórios americanos. A estatística elaborada pelos professores Ribera e Schenone com base nos censos, padrões e documentação de vária ordem, permite verificar que dos 97 ourives europeus já identificados que trabalharam na região de Buenos Aires, 43 são espanhóis e 44 são portugueses, aos quais há a juntar mais 7 brasileiros 1 . Datam do início do século XVII as primeiras notícias da chegada de ourives lusitanos, sendo muitos os que declaram ter entrado ilegalmente em Buenos Aires. Throughout history, natural law has evolved, from the reflections of Plato and Aristotle to the Christian Aristotelianism of the Middle Ages, particularly in the works of Thomas Aquinas, who merged faith and reason to argue that natural law reflects eternal, divine principles. In early modern philosophy, natural law's influence resurfaced through the works of thinkers like Grotius, Hobbes, and Pufendorf, who secularised the concept, enabling critiques of state power and the defence of universal human rights. Despite of the later challenges from positivism, exemplified by figures like Bentham and Kelsen, natural law remains a potent remedy against the erosion of human dignity, particularly in the face of totalitarian ideologies such as communism, Nazism, and radical Islam. These systems, which prioritise collective or ideological goals over the individual ones, have historically led to atrocities and the degradation of human worth. Natural law's universalism provides a robust defence against moral relativism and totalitarianism, reaffirming the inherent dignity of all individuals. Its principles, reflected in key legal documents such as the US Declaration of Independence and the UN Declaration of Human Rights, serve as enduring safeguards against the inflation or devaluation of human dignity in legal and political discourse.

In this paper, we present an unedited Neo-Latin poem on the Battle of Pavia. The work consists of four books, totaling more than 3000 hexameters, the canonical verse of epic poetry. It is transmitted by a manuscript held in Wolfenbüttel, Herzog August Bibliothek (Guelf. 22.2 Aug. 4o). Penned by Arnoldus Goerinus Flutterius, monk and librarian of the Lüchtenhof Monastery in Hildesheim, the poem was written between 1525 and early 1542, at the latest. Goerinus dedicated his work to Ferdinandus I (1503–1564), Archduke of Austria

The Ethnological Archive of the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant (Muzeul Național al Țăranului Român, henceforward NMRP) preserves a substantial part of the photographic holdings of the former Museum of National Art in Bucharest (1906-1946). This archival core includes a fonds comprising over a thousand glass-plate negatives (re)inventoried at the beginning of the 1950s, concomitantly with the organisation of the Museum of Folk Art (Muzeul de Artă Populară). The lacunary and descriptive nature of the catalogue entries compiled on this occasion makes it clear that the archivists of the new institution could not refer to any preexisting records, relying exclusively on the visual content in the photos. Only a fraction of this fonds can be safely associated with the photographic output of the Museum of National Art and its long-term director, Alexandru Tzigara-Samurcaș; for the rest of these glass-plate negatives, questions of authorship and provenance are bound to remain open.

Going back to the primary data provided by the photographic artefacts themselves, I have identified in this fonds several series of portraits and rural views which stand out for their thematic and stylistic coherence, manifestly rooted in a good grip on fieldwork practice and familiarity with the pictured communities: by all appearances, fragments of an ample corpus of ethnographic photography taken in the last years of the 19th century in the counties of Vâlcea and Gorj. Some of these glass-plate negatives bear the marking “V.R.P. 99”. By analogy with several images published at the beginning of the 20th century, I have been able to link this marking to the work of Vitold (Witold) Rola Piekarski (1857-1909), graphic artist of Polish origins, amateur ethnographer and archaeologist, cofounder of the Gorj County Museum in Târgu Jiu (1894). The already limited art-historical literature on Piekarski only makes cursory mention of his photographic activity, while the discovery of positives ascribed to Piekarski in the collection of the Iron Gates Region Museum in Turnu Severin (E. Bosoancă, 1995) seems to have gone largely unnoticed in Romanian photo-historiography.

This presentation aims to take a firm step towards the rediscovery of Vitold Rola Piekarski’s photographic work, following the identification of the glass-plate negatives held in the Ethnological Archive of the NMRP. I shall discuss the cross-referencing methods used in the attribution and reconstruction of the corpus, applied so far to the NMRP negatives and the reproductions published during Piekarski’s lifetime, as well as to the positives identified in the collections of the Iron Gates Region Museum and the Library of the Romanian Academy. Finally, I shall touch briefly on the significance of the Piekarski corpus in the context of (proto)ethnographic photography, as practiced in Romania at the end of the 19th century.

Le caractère public des funérailles des élites nobiliaires est un phénomène nouveau dans l’Europe de l’Ancien Régime. Ce phénomène est étroitement lié à la naissance et au développement de l’opinion publique et à la transformation de l’utilisation de l’espace urbain européen.

Par sa méthode globalisante et sa nature inter et pluri disciplinaire, à la croisée de l’histoire sociale, de l’histoire culturelle de l’art, de la musicologie urbaine et de l’anthropologie historique, le présent colloque vise à étudier l’histoire longue des pratiques culturelles funéraires destinées à l’affirmation et à la perpétuation du pouvoir. Il cherche ainsi à interroger, à partir de l’élément musical et sonore, la signification, la perception et la transformation de ces événements funèbres qui sont à l’origine de la ritualisation de l’espace urbain où se croisent les différentes couches de la société d’alors.

Our paper conceptualizes protest rhetoric in order to theorize the underlying relationship between communication and subjectivity. We do this by highlighting how rhetorical protest challenges the sovereignty of voice. Our argument is that Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses is an example of a sign that protests. To make this argument, we use a materialist method from media studies that simultaneously examines the formal capacities of a sign that protests and maps its historical transformation. Our analysis opens with the two prevailing accounts of Luther's theses: disputation and dissemination. We extend both disputation and dissemination by placing them in a "universal history" of protest rhetoric that grounds many accepted critical rhetorical theories in specific systems of representation. Drawing together our findings, we conclude by urging the replacement of logos and logocentrism with the logistics of protest rhetoric in order to link together disputation and dissemination as a mechanism for both change and subjection.
