Early Medieval Archaeology

The article examines a Sasanian chalcedony seal featuring a “formal portrait”
style image, originating from the former Tambov Province. The artifact was acquired
by the State Historical Museum as part of the Uvarov Museum collection in Porechye. The
study identifies stylistically related seals forming a unified group with the published example.
Comparable seals from the collections of the State Hermitage Museum, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, and the British Museum are also analyzed. This analysis dates the group to
the late 4th – early 6th centuries AD. A review of other Sasanian seals discovered in Eastern
Europe outlines potential routes for their introduction into the forested zones during the late 1st
to early 2nd millennium AD. The most plausible pathway is the Don route, through which individual
examples of Sasanian glyptics likely reached the region from the North Caucasus. The
seal’s connection to the antiquities of the Middle Tsna Mordvins in Tambov Province is also
proposed.

The article describes the only recorded case of a Sasanian
seal discovered among the antiquities of the Saltovo-Mayatskaya
culture. The seal was unearthed in 1906 by Vasily
Babenko in the Verkhny-Saltov burial ground 4 (Verkhny
Saltov, Kharkov Governorate). The carnelian seal served as
a pendant in a woman’s necklace, which consisted of glass
and carnelian beads and bronze ornamental pieces. Judging
from the composition of items discovered in the burial, it
might be dated within the ninth century.
The lion image on the seal as well as its production technique
are characteristic of the Sasanian hardstone carving
of a period between the late fourth and early sixth centuries.
The popular image of lion is represented by several
iconographic versions in Sasanian art in general.
The Saltovo-Mayatskaya culture antiquities include another
seal, one with the image of the Tree of Life. It was
accidentally discovered in the Nizhniye Lubyanki burial
ground (Belgorod region), and it might have also been
a part of a destroyed burial. Use of Sasanian seals and their
imitations as part of women’s necklaces was traditional for
the North Caucasian population in the late fifth – eleventh
centuries, especially in the areas crossed by routes to Transcaucasia.
It was the North Caucasus where most of the
Saltovo-Mayatskaya culture objects came from. Through
the North Caucasus they went to Crimea, where a seal with
a carved image of birds as part of a women’s necklace was
also found, and probably proceeded further towards the
Middle Danube region, where another similar discovery was
made. However, it is worth mentioning that there was another
direction – the Mediterranean region, through which
certain items of Sasanian hardstone carving infiltrated the
Byzantine Empire and then Western Europe.
The beginning of yet another route can be reconstructed
due to the concentrated discovery of seals in the delta
of the Syr Darya River (Eastern Aral Sea region) among the
antiquities of the Jeti-Asar culture from the fourth to sixth
centuries. In this region there were found seals once used
as part of the costume: they were attached somewhere near
the belt in a bundle with one or two large beads or buttons.
Experts assume that such bundles might have represented
high social position of their owners, both men and women.
The seals travelled through the Aral Sea region to the Urals
and the Middle Volga region. There, among discovered
carved Iranian stones, two seals used in a woman’s necklace
of the sixth century were identified (Bakhmutino burial
ground, burial 5). There have been other accidental finds
in the Volga Bulgaria area. They might be related to the
functioning of the Volga trade route in later times. Through
Volga Bulgaria these items might have reached the Ancient
Russian state and further up Southern Sweden, where some
discoveries of the kind have been made.
The most recent finds of the carved Sasanian seals date
back to the Golden Horde period. Thus, a seal was found
under the lower jaw of a buried woman’s remains in a female
burial in the Zaporozhye region (Mamai-Surka burial
ground, burial 61), which means that it could have been
worn around the neck. Experts consider it to be a possible
relic of the ancient tradition of the Saltovo-Mayatskaya tradition,
preserved among the descendants of the Alan population
of the Khazar Kaganate, discovered at this burial
site thanks to anthropological materials. This assumption
is supported by historical records about the Alans as part of
the population of an ulus ruled by Khan Nogai and including
this area.

The topic of water has gained tremendously in significance and even urgency today because of global warming and the ever-shrinking availability of good drinking water for a constantly growing world population. One important approach to changing our attitude toward this precious resource without which there cannot be life proves to be a careful and meaningful close reading of literary texts where the protagonist/s pay explicit respect to water and identify it as what it really is, a gift from God or any other divine being/creator. Recent studies have already identified the great symbolic significance of rivers, and even seas, for human society because they interact intimately with human beings, providing resources, constituting dangers and barriers, and symbolizing human life through the natural entity. The present article highlights an early medieval verse narrative, Hrotsvit of Gandersheim's religious legend narrative, "Gongolf," where the protagonist recognizes from early on the spiritual function of good clear water, which foreshadows his turning into a saint. Other literary texts from that early period also contributed to the global discourse on water as the conditio sine qua non for human existence, though Hrotsvit appears to be the most sophisticated and eloquent poet to create this literary paean on water. A useful term for this narrative phenomenon could be 'aquapoetics.

An issue is dedicated to Cossack’s «karabela» sabers in the Vasyl Krychevsky Poltava Local Lore Museum collection. Saber is one of the most recognizable kinds of Cos- sacks weapon that was source of pride for its owner, symbol of nobility and combat heroism. History of four karabelas, two of which belonged to members of Cossacks aristocracy of the 18th c. from Poltava Region – P. Nizhynets and P. Rudenko – is given. An issue would be interesting for professional historians, local historians, museum workers, art critics and wide range of readers that are fond of cold weapon and Ukrainian history pages.

Francesco da Barberino is the author of one of the few female etiquette texts written in the Middle Ages. In this period, a number of texts on court etiquette had been written but the most of them were addressed to the male reader and only few of them were written specifically for women.

In his works, Francesco da Barberino shows the rules of court etiquette appropriate for a girl from a family of high social status the age of marriage. Thanks to his work, we have knowledge on which virtues were appreciated, what was allowed, and what type of conduct was not accepted by the society of the time.

The Viking Age was a dynamic period, with local centres and urban sites engaging to varying degrees in local, regional and interregional networks. While the role of certain northern towns in these networks is relatively wellknown and the related knowledge up to date, other towns appear to have received comparatively little recent attention. This study aims to investigate the role of the Viking-Age town of Aros, present-day Aarhus, situated on the eastern coast of Jutland, Denmark, in interregional networks, by means of the interdisciplinary study of a rare context, excavated in 2009: a well-preserved burned pit house at the site of Bispetorv, dated to the late 10th century CE. What does the archaeological assemblage tell about the house and its occupants, what can be said about resource exploitation, and to what extent were the occupants of the late Viking-Age pit house involved in long-distance trade?

The study of the pit house at Bispetorv is based on an interdisciplinary approach, including analysis of inorganic artefacts, zooarchaeological remains, macrobotanical remains and carbonised wood collected from multiple layers, supported by a substantial number of radiocarbon dates. The outcomes are presented within the framework of other comparable published and unpublished sites in and nearby Aarhus including Søndervold and Skt. Clemens Straede, as well as with other Viking-Age towns in northern Europe.

The analysis of Bispetorv reveals a predominance of artefacts and ecofacts associated with regional networks, with scant evidence of contacts with the Baltic Sea coast. While these results match the findings from other sites in Aarhus, and are comparable to other local centres, they are in apparent contrast to larger urban centres such as Ribe, Hedeby and Kaupang. Further research, based on a variety of methods, will have to show to what degree the currently available bioarchaeological results from Aarhus are representative for the remaining parts of the urban centre and to what extent long-distance contacts evolved over time.

I have tried to explain how the process of adaptation of an expensive
and exotic animal was accompanied by varied symbolic connotations. The peacock arrived in Greece and Rome as a luxury item, so it is easy to explain that it was associated with the excessive desire to exhibit economic power by its owners. It is also easy to understand that its exorbitant price was quickly linked with political corruption. But it is not so easy to understand that he acquired a religious connotation so soon. Usually, explanations that can be read about the peacock’s
eschatological value use the cited St. Augustine passage in which he explains that his flesh is incorruptible. However, we have tried to show that the peacock’s cultural journey through the Classic World was long and complex: St. Augustine is only the final step

The fortified hilltop settlement of Ljubična, where the Baroque pilgrimage church of St. Mary stands today, is an important multi-period archaeological site. A LiDAR scan, soundings, and field observations indicate a 420 x 110m large, wall-surrounded prehistoric hillfort. Within it, on the very top of the hill, stood a smaller fortress (150 x 75m), protected by a0.8m thick defensive wall built in the Late Roman period. Various settlement layers at Ljubična can be welldefined chronologically based on numerous characteristic metal finds and ceramics. The first peak of settlement occurred in the Late Bronze Age, evidenced by three hoard finds among other items. Individual objects suggest settlement on the hill in the Early Iron Age  as well. The La Tène period is exceptionally well-documented at the site. In addition to various valuable items, over a hundred Celtic coins were discovered, confirming extensive
and continuous settlement in the last two centuries before the arrival of the Romans. The Late Roman settlement on the hill was very intensive (second half of the 4th and first half of the 5th century). The character of the outpost is eloquently revealed by typical elements of male military attire. In addition to numerous coins two hoard finds of various agricultural and carpentry tools should be mentioned. The last peak of settlement at the site can be dated to the Early Middle Ages, specifically to the end of
the 8th, 9th, and 10th centuries. Numerous valuable metal objects, parts of rich equestrian equipment and horse gear, jewelry, and hoard finds of iron tools were discovered. The interpretation of these remains is challenging and, given the poor research of the site, allows for several possibilities, among which at least two should be mentioned: the Frankish military campaigns, which may have used old Late Antique outposts at important strategic locations as they expanded their power into the eastern lands, and the appealing hypothesis of a fortress of the local ruling nobility.
The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nürnberg houses a richly decorated casket for liturgical texts, dating from the 9th century, which once formed part of the extensive library of the Žiče Monastery. In view of the exceptional significance of the 9th-century settlement at Ljubična, the author hypothesizes that the casket originated from this very site and, through the agency of the surrounding population, found its way to the monastery, located merely 12 kilometers away.

Серед них висвітлено випікання короваю (вимоги до коровайниць, прикрашання короваю, ворожіння з обрядовим хлібом і хлібною лопатою, заборона користуватися піччю для інших потреб після випікання короваю); вбирання весільного деревця (породи дерев для його виготовлення, прикраси, виконавці, викуповування деревця); плетення весільних вінків (зрізання барвінку, ворожіння із ним, поводження із залишками барвінку і ниток, безпосереднє виготовлення вінків і його виконавиці, викуповування вінків); прикрашання весільної оселі (плетення вінків для оздоби житла, прибивання їх до стелі, подальше використання, виготовлення ініціалів молодят із зелені, весільної арки на ворота, вінків для різних етапів весілля); дарування сорочки молодому (відряджання чоловіків із подарунком до молодого, дарування неякісної сорочки, вгощання посланців); обдаровування молодої, її родини тощо. Визначено локальні особливості розглянутих явищ.

U radu se raspravlja o gradu Livnu u kontekstu ranosrednjovjekovne
hrvatske države. Nastoji se odgovoriti na pitanje je li Livno bilo jedno od
važnih središta ili tek ruralno područje na periferiji države. S obzirom na
to da je Livno kao urbano naselje arheološki gotovo neistraženo, temi se
pristupa iz različitih aspekata, pri čemu se izlazi iz strogih kronoloških i
geografskih okvira utvrđenog ranosrednjovjekovnog grada, koji je stratigrafski
još uvijek najveća nepoznanica. Povijesni izvori potvrđuju postojanje
utvrđenog ranosrednjovjekovnog grada Livna (Cleuna, Hlivno),
a osim njih, pri istraživanju su poslužili arheološki nalazi, topografija i
rijetki sačuvani ostatci s terena. Na temelju sakupljenih podataka nastojalo
se rekonstruirati položaj i ulogu ranosrednjovjekovnog utvrđenog
grada Livna, s okolnim područjem, u okvirima ranosrednjovjekovne hrvatske
države te ukazati na okolnosti stradanja i pregradnji srednjovjekovnog
grada.

The thesis deals with glass vessels from the Roman auxiliary fort at Iža, bridgehead of Brigetio. The finds come from both phases of its existence (175 – last quarter of the 4th century), and also from the postvalentinian period (till the half of the 5th century). The main goal of the thesis was to create detailed analysis of the glass vessels within context of the glass-production in the northern Pannonia. The finds consists of 3216 glass
fragments, but only 25 % of them were identified typologically. Most of them were used for drinking. Other vessels served as a container for olis, cosmetics and ointments, to serve liquids and food, to store liquids and for other purposes. Vessels, which are from the period till the half of the 3rd century, were most probably produced in the glass workshop in Brigetio. Origin of the later artefacts is questionable. Some of them could be imported from other provinces.

Archaeological evidence from funerary contexts is largely ignored in current scholarship on the First Plague Pandemic, despite the important information that burials and cemeteries can provide about how plague might have affected societies. Skeletal (mainly dental) remains are used in the paleogenomic search for victims of plague (Yersinia pestis), but significant contextual information is to be gained from plague-positive graves through bioarchaeological study of the complete individual and their broader funerary context, both of which are largely absent from current scholarship. We argue that future scholarship on the First Plague Pandemic must bring burial archaeology to the growing body of evidence, and archaeologists themselves must lead or be involved in this research. We present three ways in which burial archaeology can be used effectively to study the impact of first-pandemic plague on individuals and communities: by reconsidering whether we should be looking for an archaeology of "crisis" for this disease event, by evaluating burial archaeology (especially of multiple burials) in its proper sociocultural context, and by examining bioarchaeological evidence from entire cemeteries where plague genomes are recovered in any quantity. We conclude by offering an example of how such archaeological evidence can be more inclusively and effectively incorporated into interdisciplinary plague studies, to the benefit of the field.

La obra aborda el problema de la crisis demográfica, como situación en la que un país experimenta un descenso significativo de los nacimientos y un aumento de la población anciana, centrándose en la dimensión local del fenómeno. De hecho, la crisis demográfica se manifiesta de forma espacialmente heterogénea, polarizándose, en particular, en zonas urbanas, caracterizadas por la concentración de la mayor parte de la población, y en zonas rurales, afectadas por la despoblación. La despoblación rural, siendo la expresión de la crisis demográfica occidental, especialmente la europea, llevada a sus últimas consecuencias, constituye el caso elegido por este trabajo.

En el análisis de este fenómeno, el estudio destaca la importancia de la agricultura entre las medidas jurídicas de lucha contra la despoblación, abordando, transversalmente, planes administrativos ad hoc, intervenciones públicas dirigidas a zonas rurales despobladas en el ámbito de la ordenación del territorio, la actividad de fomento y los servicios públicos. Sin embargo, como se desprende del trabajo, la operatividad de estas medidas está condicionada por el acceso al uso productivo de la tierra, cuya reconstrucción, tal y como se propone en el trabajo, destaca la necesidad de la intervención del poder público para su garantía.

El estudio de las medidas de lucha contra la despoblación rural y los instrumentos de acceso a la tierra se aborda comparando la experiencia jurídica de España e Italia, a la luz de los distintos puntos en común entre ambos países en relación con el fenómeno, y desde la perspectiva del Derecho administrativo, destacando la estrecha vinculación entre agricultura e interés público, así como el carácter jurídico-administrativo de los instrumentos diseñados.

У ході проведення мінералого-петрографічного аналізу сировини виготовлення скіфської стели і порівняння отриманих даних із петрографічними характеристиками подібних гірських порід з метою визначення походження матеріалу, отримані нові дані з історії використання різних видів гірських порід скіфами для виготовлення творів кам’яної монументальної скульптури. Встановлено, що стелу з кургану біля с. Великомихайлівка Покровського р-ну Дніпропетровської обл. виготовлено з ендербіту – найдавнішої за часом формування породи. За мінеральним складом вона відповідає тоналіту, темноколірні мінерали якого представлені біотитом, клінопіроксеном, роговою обманкою та ортопіроксеном. Порівнюючи цей зразок і породи ендербітових комплексів гранітоїдів Українського щита, визначено, що найбільш імовірним джерелом походження сировини були ендербіти токмацького комплексу Приазовського мегаблоку Українського щита, чим доповнено новими фактами історію використання кам’яної сировини України у ранньому залізному віці. /

During the mineralogical-petrographic analysis of the raw material used for the production of the Scythian stele and the comparison of the obtained data with the petrographic characteristics of similar rock types to determine the origin of the material, new data were obtained on the history of the use of various types of rocks by the Scythians for the creation of monumental stone sculptures. It was established that the stele from the burial mound near the village of Velykomykhailivka, Pokrovskyi District, Dnipropetrovsk district, was made of enderbite, the oldest rock in terms of formation time. In terms of mineral composition, it corresponds to tonalite, with dark-colored minerals represented by biotite, clinopyroxene, hornblende, and orthopyroxene. By comparing this sample with the rocks of enderbitic complexes of the granitoids of the Ukrainian Shield, it was determined that the most probable source of the raw material was the enderbites of the Tokmak complex of the Azov Megablock of the Ukrainian Shield. This adds new facts to the history of the use of stone raw materials in Ukraine during the Early Iron Age.

discusses many aspects of the social, economic and religious life of the communities which lay on the frontier between Rome and Persia. In the time of Diocletian there is a Roman Mesopotamia. A substantial field army was formed, which drew its troops from the Danube as well as the eastern provinces. A peace treaty acknowledged not only northern Mesopotamia as Roman territory with the frontier marked by the river Tigris, but also the status of Armenia and Iberia as Roman client kingdoms. The settlement with Persia and the ensuing peace heralded a complete reorganization of the Mesopotamian limes. Two new provinces were formed; one east of the Khabur, with its capital at Nisibis and named Mesopotamia proper, the other between the Khabur and the great loop of the Euphrates, called Osrhoene and with its capital at Edessa. The Notitia Diqnitatum gives us some indication of which troops were present and where they were deployed. In 363 ad the Romans had lost control over the more remote parts. Archaeological work in the region has been hampered both by modern political divisions and by interest devoted to earlier civilizations. In his study of the Justinianic strengthening of the defences in the eastern provinces Procopius makes reference to earlier fortifications at numerous sites which include important strategic centres such as Edessa, Tella/Constantina, Resaina and Amida. The forces deployed in the Notitia lists show a striking uniformity, particularly in the numbers of the elite cavalry vexillations. From the narrative of Ammianus it is evident that sporadic warfare was endemic in the border provinces of Mesopotamia and Osrhoene throughout the mid-fourth century. Nisibis may have been garrisoned by cavalry units under the Tetrarchy. Eusebius does, refer to trouble in Armenia which he associates closely with the persecution of Christianity by Maximinus in 312. Mesopotamia is completely absent from the literary sources throughout these years. There are difficulties experienced by Constantius II in the mid-fourth century when he was twice faced with Persian invasions and western opponents at the same time. Constantine himself paid scant attention to the eastern frontier in the following years. There is no indication that he ever visited the area except for a brief stay at Antioch. Eusebius records another letter, sent to Alexander and Arius by Constantine in the hope of getting them to settle their differences, which refers to his failure to travel in Mesopotamia. According to Libanius, the Persian king sent ambassadors to demand frontier changes, presumably in similar terms to those used in a letter to Constantius in 358. It may be assumed that Constantine's reply was at least as forthright and uncompromising as that of his son a quarter of a century later. Possibly in response to the embassy and the threat of hostilities, Constantine dispatched the Caesar to the East in 333. According to Malalas, the establishment at Antioch of the first comes Orientis, Felicianus, also occurred in 335. Since he was appointed in order to supervise troop movements and to facilitate the organization of military supplies, it seems that this, too, was closely connected with the worsening situation on the eastern front. Constantius is credited by several sources with the fortification of Amida (modern-day Diyarbakır, Turkey), while he was still Caesar. Surprising that Constantine was apparently not satisfied with the delegation which was sent to sue for peace in the winter of 336/7. Sirks (2021) notes, that a common feature of the measures against heretics and apostates in the 4th century ad is that their rights regarding successions are being curtailed or even removed. The essential texts derive from the Theodosian Code from the 4th century. Heterodox Christians and apostates were persecuted as well once Christianity was favoured by Constantine. Thus orthodox (catholic) Christianity was favoured, be it not yet elevated to the official religion of the state. CTh 16,5,65 of 428 applied this sanction to all heretics and apostates. Later, under Justinian, heretics cannot inherit in any way (testamentarily and ab intestato, CJ 1,5,18,6ff.). Why did the emperors chose this sanction? The prevailing answer in literature is that it symbolises the deprivation of Roman citizenship, and, thus, rights. Another question is, why the Roman emperors combated what they characterised as heresies. Two significant sanctions were banishment and expropriations. The sanctions in the law of succession after 428 are discussed . The first is CTh 16,5,65 of 428, a long text which comprises all heretical sects. It sets sanctions thereby dividing the heretics in four groups, each with different sanctions. In a discussion of the close connection between citizenship and the testamenti factio, Sirks (2021) states that the withdrawal of the latter might in the rhetoric bombast of the imperial constitutions be equalled with loss of citizenship. The loss of the testamenti factio makes heretics as if peregrines, cutting them off from the body of Roman citizens. Regarding the Limes Moesia en Limes Thraciae, Falluomini (2015) mentions in the Gothic Version of the Gospels, that citations from Ot and NT are transmitted by a gothic fragmentary text (part of a sermon or liturgical prayer). The OT in gothic is lost. Auxentius mentions Ulfilas wrote several tractates and many interpretations in gothic, Greek and Latin. Ulfilas converted from Niceness Orthodoxy to the Homoean creed in 360-376. The Homoeans taught a form of Arianism that asserted that the Son was distinct from, but like (Greek homoios), the Father, as opposed to the Nicene Creed (The Nicene Creed • I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, (...) • I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, (...) I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins), which stated that the Son is of one substance (Greek homoousios) with the Father ). Constantius II permitted Ulfilas and his followers to enter the Roman Empire, after they were attacked by Goths. As 'lesser Goths' they settled in Moesia Inferior (Nicopolis). Ulfilas was consecrated by Eusebius of Nicomedia, bishop under Constantius II. Falluomini (2015) supposes the Ulfilas translations came from a greek example and originated from Constantinople. Suggested is that the version of the translation of the Bible was at least orally before the crossing of the Danube (among all goths), and completed in Moesia. Jordanes calls the 'lesser goths', 'a sect'. The Ostrogoths, settled near Tomi (Constanta), used the gothic translation in the liturgy, according to Strabo (849 ad). The gothic Bible was

The article deals with castles from 11.- 12th century in Moravia. Most part of them eas founded about the middle of the 11th century after the conquest of Moravia  by Přemyslids about 1029. They fulfilled administrative and defensive functions, and were also centers for collecting princely taxes. We can distinguish three categories of these seats. Designer pieces make the most striking creative legacy left  behind by the art of jewellery from the second half of the twentieth century onwards. To express their ideas, artists opted for some affordable materials such as paper and its varieties – paperboard, photographs, newspapers and book pages. This novelty added considerably to the formal and conceptual qualities of the artworks. While working on a new piece, artists drew inspiration from the properties of paper, which unlocked the artistic and expressive potential of other materials. The concept of the final product’s size also transformed, since paper could give rise to big yet lightweight pieces. Besides, its availability helped to shift the focus from the economic value of the raw material used in a piece to its conceptual worth.

There were events then ; something to see and think of, and possibly fly from ; plenty of blood and assassination, perhaps, but then you could always shut and bar the strong gates of the quarter, when the Mamluks or the Berbers, or, worst of all, the black Sudanis, were on the war-path. Now the gates are taken away, and there are no cavalcades of romantic troopers, beautiful to behold in their array, to ravish your household and give colour to life. In those days it was possible for any man of brain and luck to rise to power and wealth, such wealth as all Cairo could not furnish in these blank and honest times ; promotion was ever at hand, and the way was open to the strong, the cunning, and the rich. What were a holocaust of victims, an orgy of rapine, even the deadly ravages of periodical plague and famine, in comparison with the great occasions, the gorgeous pomp, the endless oppor- tunities, the infinite variety of those unruly and tumultuous but never tedious days ? This is what the true Cairene meditates in his heart. Town Foundations in the 12th/13th Century Transformation Period and the Urbanisation Phases in Pomerania and Brandenburg in the Middle Ages - The article examines the emergence of legal towns in Pomerania and Brandenburg during the great upheavals of the 12th/13th centuries, set against the backdrop of their early urban predecessors from the Slavic period (7th to 12th centuries). It demonstrates that the establishment of towns represented the final stage of an urbanisation history that can be clearly divided into three phases. Firstly, maritime trading centres on the Baltic coast had taken on central functions; these emporia existed from the 8th to the 10th century. This phase was followed by the late Slavic »castle towns« (Burgstädte), which flourished in the 11th and 12th centuries. Subsequently, a number of legal towns emerged. Despite this progression, urban development was marked by major disruptions and new beginnings. The overview of urbanisation history also includes subordinate centres, merchant settlements, and villae fori, as well as towns deserted as a result of de-urbanisation processes.
