The images of Széchenyi versus Kossuth by Henrik Marczali. Széchenyi–Kossuth debate not only attracted the attention of contemporaries but also the continuous interest of historical literature. Only a small part of Henrik Marczali’s enormous work affected 19th-century Hungarian history. In his Hungarian historical summaries, based on his university lectures, he dealt with the reform era and its protagonists, Széchenyi and Kossuth. In his interpretation of the debate between the two, he went beyond the constructions of the former actors to define their political positions. It was also novel that he compared the arguments of the debate mainly to their image of society, and their program about society. The paper not only reconstructs Marczali’s historiographical position but also places it in the context of contemporary historical interpretations.

The history of the Romanian lexic is complex especially because the vocabulary has been permanently enriched with loans from the language of the different peoples and civilizations with which it came into contact. These loans are obviously the result of the historical circumstances and of the geographic context in which the Romanian language evolved. The majority of the neighboring idioms, among which the Turkish, contributed to the enrichment of the Romanian lexicon. It should be noted that the names of coins of Turkish origin were known to the inhabitants of both Romanian principalities, but given the geographical proximity and direct trade relations, especially those from Wallachia and Moldavia. We will try through this intervention to be part of a wider approach, to follow one at a time the attestation of these terms in the written language, possibly also the evolution of the numismatic pieces they call, offering some landmarks related to their circulation in the Danube area Down, historically. We stop in the next lines on the "para", this being the most frequently-named Turkish currency name among those that circulated to the north of the Danube.

In 1969, Anselm Kiefer traveled through France and Italy and then published a series of photographs entitled "Besetzungen," or Occupations. These photographs depict the artist "occupying" different European sites, his right arm raised in the Hitler salute. 2 The series starts with Kiefer, shot from below as he stands on top of a government building, performing the Sieg Heil gesture, and ends with the artist facing the Baltic shore, his right arm again raised in the fascist "gesture of conquest." 3 We see Kiefer's back, and both setting and pose recall paintings by Caspar David Friedrich-not one of the mountain landscapes that Nazi artists copied with their granite quarries, but Friedrich's Wanderer above the Misty Sea (ca. 1818). This last shot of the series is preceded by two photographs of Kiefer-facing us as he stands first in front of the Colosseum, then inside (figure E.1). En el caso de Colombia, la práctica de la disciplina histórica ha devenido
durante el siglo xx hasta hoy en el predominio de un ejercicio intelectual asociado con tres aspectos. El primero tiene que ver con la práctica de la escritura y el reconocimiento social que se conjugan en las labores de la Academia Colombiana de Historia y de asociaciones similares que funcionan a nivel local y regional, como los Centros de Historia. El segundo aspecto tiene que ver con las actividades de estas asociaciones, que han diseñado e implementado iniciativas para identificar, rescatar y enaltecer individuos o bienes patrimoniales que deben ser restaurados y conservados, como ha ocurrido con el rescate de piezas antiguas y edificaciones de los centros históricos de varias ciudades colombianas. Al mismo tiempo, estas agremiaciones han impulsado la creación y renovación de archivos
y bibliotecas, tanto en Bogotá como en algunas capitales departamentales, como ejes para la realización de las investigaciones históricas. Por último, el tercer aspecto tiene que ver con la apertura de espacios de formación en las universidades establecidas en las capitales departamentales, así como la presencia de las asignaturas de Historia y Geografía en la enseñanza primaria y secundaria. El análisis de cada uno de estos aspectos no se puede desplegar en la extensión disponible para este capítulo, pero, a continuación, se propone una descripción sintética de cada uno de ellos.

Resumen. Objetivo/contexto: durante la primera mitad del siglo XX en Colombia, se intensificaron los esfuerzos para combatir las enfermedades infecciosas, con especial énfasis en las campañas de salud pública. Este artículo explora la tuberculosis desde una perspectiva cultural en la era preantibiótica, analizando su representación en la esfera pública a través de la prensa escrita en Medellín. Metodología: se identificaron artículos, notas y anuncios sobre la tuberculosis y las campañas antituberculosas en El Colombiano. El análisis documental permitió estudiar el papel del discurso periodístico en la configuración de la percepción social de la enfermedad. Originalidad: a diferencia de estudios previos centrados en fuentes oficiales y documentos médicos, este artículo destaca el valor de la prensa como un espacio clave para comprender las dimensiones sociales y culturales de la tuberculosis. La prensa no solo reflejó debates médicos e institucionales, sino que también moldeó imaginarios colectivos. Conclusiones: la prensa actuó como un mediador entre el conocimiento médico y la sociedad, facilitando la difusión de información sobre prevención y tratamiento en un contexto de creciente preocupación por las enfermedades sociales. El análisis revela cómo el estigma y la marginación de los enfermos se acentuaron debido a la limitada capacidad hospitalaria y la precariedad de recursos. Además, expone realidades como la inseguridad cotidiana, la saturación hospitalaria y el hacinamiento en las cárceles, así como la angustia provocada por la enfermedad, que llevó a algunos pacientes a optar por el suicidio tras recibir el diagnóstico. Finalmente, se destaca la importancia de los medios de comunicación en la circulación transnacional del conocimiento médico y en la construcción de discursos sobre salud y modernidad.

Dans une Europe sous la domination du régime national-socialiste, en
particulier dans les ghettos, dans les camps de concentration et dans les
camps d’extermination, des hommes et des femmes furent confrontés
à la nécessité de faire des choix dans des conditions extrêmes. Plusieurs
récits sont parvenus jusqu’à nous : une mère a dû sacrifier un de ses
enfants pour permettre à un autre de vivre ; un détenu devenu « Kapo »
a été contraint de choisir quels prisonniers protéger au détriment des
autres ; un médecin ou soignant a dû choisir quels malades à l’infirmerie
avaient le plus de chance de survivre pour leur éviter la sélection…
Dans ces conditions extrêmes, l’ensemble des valeurs qui présidaient au
choix entraient en conflit – qu’elles soient liées à la morale individuelle,
à l’éthique professionnelle ou à la logique d’une résistance collective. En
cela, le choix était à la fois impossible et en même temps inévitable et
nécessaire. Le spécialiste de la littérature sur le génocide juif, Lawrence
L. Langer, l’a désigné en 1980 par l’expression de choiceless choice : un
non-choix, c’est-à-dire un choix qui n’en est pas un.

Abstract

This work is divided into three sections. The first outlines classical anarchist thought and its proposal to dissolve the state, questioning its legitimacy. Anarchism is primarily a moral philosophy with Aristotelian elements and a concept of individual autonomy rooted in Enlightenment ideals. The second section, drawing on archaeologist Patrick Kirch's analysis of early Hawaiian society, discusses cultural evolution in Hawaii and Polynesia, leading to shifts in ethical structures. Key concepts like mana and kapu signified a transition from a chiefdom society to one founded on sacred sovereignty, merging religious and political realms. In the final section, the emergence of the modern nation-state is examined, emphasizing the split between religious and political spheres in European society. This separation contributed to a rationalized concept of state legitimacy inherited from Greek and Roman traditions. Hawaiian and European social structures are compared to critique the anarchist proposal for state dissolution, concluding that the archaic Hawaiian state was not a random development. Instead, classical anarchism’s notion of the state as a contingent outcome of societal evolution made the idea of state dissolution conceivable. The Enlightenment’s autonomous individual, modernity’s historical context, and secular conditions fostered the transformative possibilities envisioned by classical anarchist thought.

En 1964 était fondé le Comité français d'histoire de l'art (CFHA). Mais cette date marque surtout un renouveau de l'histoire de l'art en France, tant à l'université que dans le domaine du patrimoine. Soixante ans plus tard, à l'occasion du 36e Congrès international d'histoire de l'art, le CFHA publie HistoireS de l'art en France, 1964-2024. Lieux, questions, défis. L'ouvrage retrace les étapes importantes qui ont transformé l'histoire de l'art en France durant les six dernières décennies, qui ont vu s'opérer tant de bouleversements, et insiste sur la diversité de la discipline, telle qu'elle a pu être pratiquée depuis plusieurs générations dans différents lieux. Véritable histoire intellectuelle de l'histoire de l'art en France, ce livre aborde une cinquantaine d'« événements » marquants et plusieurs thématiques transversales, en réunissant les meilleurs spécialistes sur chaque sujet. Mais au-delà de la réflexion historiographique sur les problématiques contemporaines que la discipline a dû affronter, ce recueil d'essais publié par le CFHA contribue à mieux appréhender les questions et les enjeux actuels de l'histoire de l'art.

Nieuwe medische inzichten, investeringen in de stedelijke infrastructuur, een nieuwe beleving van de natuur en een kosmopolitische sfeer helpen die steile opgang te verklaren.

In den letzten 30 Jahren waren politische Kühnheiten unter deklarierten Feministen nicht unüblich. Sie meinten, dass unschuldige Männer ruhig einmal zu Unrecht wegen einer Falschbehauptung bestraft werden könnten, weil das als generalpräventive Botschaft an das gewalttätig deklarierte Männerkollektiv gesehen werden könne. Es wurde sogar gefordert, das Strafgesetz zugunsten von Frauen zu ändern, da es bislang ohne Rücksicht auf das Geschlecht angewendet wird. So würden Frauen und Männer, die aus niederen Motiven töten, wie dem der Rache, gleichermaßen als Mörder verurteilt. Genau gegen diese Gleichheit vor dem Gesetz haben sich bereits in der Vergangenheit Feministen gestellt. Frauen, so das Argument, die Männer töten, hätten nämlich oft besondere Gründe, die aus ihrer eigenen psychischen Bedrohung herrührten. Diese sei beim Strafmaß und er Einordnung des Delikts zu bedenken. Die Berücksichtigung besonderer Tatumstände und das Recht auf Notwehr im Rahmen geltenden Rechts seien deshalb nicht ausreichend. Diese Forderung aus den 1990er-Jahren stammte aus den USA, die den Vorreiter für ein frauenverstehendes Strafrecht für "mordende Frauen" gab. Das wurde von feministisch orientierten Frauen im deutschen Sprachraum aus den USA übernommen. Es entsprach dem Geist, Frauen vor den anstrengenden Anforderungen der uneingeschränkten Gleichheit vor dem Gesetz zu bewahren. Präventives Töten soll gesetzlich als Recht für bedrängt sich fühlende Frauen eingeführt werden.

The three men assigned to evaluate Baker represented the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the highest Methodist association in the nation. The demolition of temples or mosques was a common occurrence during imperial battles in the medieval period, often serving as part of a broader political agenda. Historical evidence suggests that such acts—whether the destruction of a place of worship or the fortresses of rival kings—were intended to dismantle the perceived power and divine protection of the enemy. Projecting these historical incidents onto the present is both misguided and dangerous, as it fosters division rather than promoting the unity of a nation.

As is well known, the Hegelian concept of self-consciousness is the device by which the world is no longer, in the gnoseological sense, an object of knowledge, but of recognition. The subject recognizes itself in the world in historical forms (the ‘figures’ of consciousness), and precisely in a processuality that does not suffer interruptions, on pain of falling back into a Kantian-style intellectualistic logic. The thesis of the essay is that the continuity of the process draws constant nourishment from the ‘mnestic trace’ imprinted in European consciousness by the experience of the French Revolution. The ‘recollection’ of the Revolution thus resurfaces in all the social and political crises that mark the becoming of Western history. The internalization of this recollection: not its removal, but its constant reactualization, properly constitutes the work of self-consciousness; it allows crises to be recognized and reconverted in the perseverance of the process. Such perseverance, however, does not represent a factor of staticity, but ensures the constant production of the New.

Brojna istraživanja sprovedena poslednjih godina posredstvom različitih naučnih metoda nastoje da proniknu u prehrambene navike, kulturu ishrane, običaje i verovanja čoveka prošlosti. Neretko se u tim procesima poseže za umetnošću kao relevantnim izvorom saznanja, a još češće opravdano pribegava interdisciplinarnoj, komparativnoj analizi koja omogućava maksimalno približavanje realnosti svakodnevice minulih epoha kada je u pitanju jedan razmerno apstraktan predmet istraživanja poput hrane. Hleb kao ključna namirnica dela, primarno bliskoistočne i evropske civilizacije, od najranijih vremena je tesno povezan sa umetnošću. Izuzetna složenost te veze, koja sublimira i opipljivu, egzistencijalnu, koliko i neopipljivu, spirtualnu dimenziju čovekove svakodnevice tokom vekova, ali i čitav niz raznolikih kulturnih slojeva, tema su ovog rada. U nameri da ukaže na sve ono o čemu se mora voditi računa u analizi umetničkog dela kao potencijalnog izvora informacija o hrani i kulturi ishrane, a u skladu sa epohom u kojoj delo nastaje, odnosno realnostima svakodnevice u najkompleksnijem značenju te reči, razmatran je, na temelju jednog broja staroegipatskih, antičkih i evropskih umetničkih dela, vanredno zanimljiv proces sakralizacije i desakralizacije hleba u skladu sa suštinskim verskim i društvenim promenama kroz vreme.

1888 yılında Selanik'in Ustrumca Kasabasında doğan Ali Rıza (Yalgın-Yalman) 1960 yılında Eskişehir'de hayata gözlerini yummuştur. Anadolu'nun güneyinde öğretmen, Milli Eğitim Müfettişi ve Müze müdürlükleri gibi çeşitli görevlerde bulunan Yalgın Anadolu'nun Toroslardaki yaşayan Türkmenler üzerine çalışmalarını yoğunlaşmıştır. Göksu ile Fırat nehirleri arasında bulunan Orta Torosların Bulgar ve Aladağlar üzerinde yoğunluk kazanan bu çalışması bölgedeki Türkmenlerin sosyal, kültürel ve ekonomik yapılarını geniş kapsamlı bir şekilde ele almaktadır. Yapmış olduğu saha çalışmalarında Türk dönemi çalışmalarının yanında eski Anadolu uygarlıkları üzerinde de gözlemleri ve değerlendirmeleri olmuştur. This article is based on two chapters of ''Archaeoastronomy in the Muisca territory" (2004), it further develops archaeoastronomical research on the Mother Goddess of the Muisca: "Bachue". Originally published in 2005 in the archaeoastronomy section of the National Astronomical Observatory of Colombia website at ( http://www.observatorio.unal.edu.co/arqueoastronomia/articulos/bachue.pdf ) It describes the figure of Bachue, the mitological mother of the Muisca, and goddes of water in the form of sacred lagoons and rivers, by looking for astronomical elements present in the myth, and in the figure of the serpent goddes. The interpretation is based on trans-cultural comparisons and archaeoastronomical insigth. By doing so, it delineates an association between Bachue, and our galaxy, the Milky Way, as seen from earth by our ancestors from the megalithic astronomical observatory of Saquenzipa in Villa de Leyva, Colombia.

Parčića), koja se dalje granaju na mnoga potpoglavlja, i zaključka. В статье исследуются данные о некоем английском пароходе «Апен», на котором, как сообщалось в ряде японских и русских источников, в 1880 г. во Владивосток из Японии прибыл представитель Внешнеторговой компании (貿易商會) Маэда Матахэй (前田又平) для открытия в городе филиала фирмы. В ходе исследования показывается, что парохода с таким названием никогда не существовало, а также называется первоначальный источник этой ошибки. На основе целого ряда отечественных и зарубежных источников, включая архивный и газетный материал, восстанавливается история реального парохода “Appin” (Аппин) и связанных с ним компаний, людей и событий.

Bushmakin, Vadim and Viacheslav Zaytsev. The Case of the Steamer “Apen”: [Uncovering Details of Primorsky Krai’s History in the Late 19th Century]

The article examines records concerning the so-called English steamship “Apen,” which, according to several Japanese and Russian sources, brought Maeda Matahei (前田又平), a representative of the Foreign Trade Company (貿易商會), from Japan to Vladivostok in 1880 to establish a branch of the firm in the city. The study demonstrates that no steamship by this name ever existed and identifies the original source of this error. Drawing on a wide range of Russian and foreign sources, including archival documents and newspaper materials, the article reconstructs the history of the actual steamship “Appin” and the associated companies, individuals, and events.

The breadth of authoritative summaries on the body culture history often renders certain topics ‘invisible’ if they are overlooked or deemed unimportant by their authors. One such neglected topic is the European body culture between Antiquity and the modern period, that is, in the Middle Ages. this oversight is significant, because the medieval period remains an important inspiration for contemporary cultural processes and the lack of reliable data on european body-cultural heritage fuels the spread of invented traditions harnessed for political goals. this article aims to help vindicate the medieval body culture by surveying historical sources revealing both its breadth anddepth, as well as challenging the supposed discontinuity between the Middle Ages andthe adjacent periods – Antiquity and Modernity. through a literature review and sampling of primary historical sources, four categories of sources are distinguished and characterised: ‘fight books’, ‘princely mirrors’, ‘dietaries’, and ‘ego-documents’. By analysing these texts together for the first time, the study revealed new information about medieval body culture and its connections to other historical periods, underscoring theneed for further research and an updated history of European body culture, possibly rethinking also the current omission of the Middle ages from European sport history.

A dabber from the last centuries BC bears an inscription of the owner and four graphic units. One of these prove that the so-called triratna symbol was originally not a symbol at all, but a monogram that can be read as namo, "veneration". The other three, fish, flag, and rotating star, have parallels in artistic expressions of many religious communities of ancient India. The fish can be used to understand part of the historical role of the cave ensemble at Barabar, while the rotating star throws light on the world of Indra in the art of Sanchi and Gandhara.

The discourse focuses on contemporary museology and its challenges, particularly regarding the democratisation of visits and practices. The presentation of several case studies of institutions mobilising to present their collections and address the violence that may be associated with them is also a feature.

In the Sejarah Melayu or Malay Annals, the fall of Singapura is widely appraised as an act of divine retribution unleashed upon rulers who have committed injustice. Implicit in this theodicy is the promise of moral justice enshrined in the Bukit Siguntang covenant, which ensures mutual reciprocity between the rulers and the ruled. But a cautious approach to the narrative of Singapura's demise reveals how justice is suspended, rather than upheld, in service of power. Enabling this suspension of morality is the transformative capacity of violence. This article performs a close reading on three consecutive episodes of unjust violence inflicted on a foreigner, a child, and a concubine, respectively, prior to the sacking of Singapura by Majapahit. In scrutinising the symbolic significance of these victims as persecuted by injudicious rulers, this article posits that violence functions as a rhetorical trope in the retelling of a Malay history. As victims are made scapegoats, unjust violence brings about the fall of Singapura and, by the same token, necessitates the birth of Melaka. Violence impels the forward movement of a royal genealogy by permitting an uninterrupted sequence of reigns through a sequence of crises.

明清戲曲評點與序跋的繁盛面貌，是文學生產、出版文化與文人生活形態交會的結果，反映出戲曲與社會的密切關聯。蔣士銓戲曲「副文本」之盛，於清中葉戲曲史上甚具代表性，適可成為了解清代文人戲曲文化的特殊窗口。蔣士銓《紅雪樓九種曲》乾隆原刻本附載評點之劇作凡八種，此外同時充斥由其所自題或他人題贈的大量序跋題詞。這些題跋和評點不但指向文本內部，為讀者提供釋義或審美的功能，也意味著一個以人際關係網絡和當代閱讀群體組成的社會文化情境，由此反映戲曲副文本文學與社會的雙重功能。
延續學界有關明清社會與書籍文化的認識，本文擬通過不同分析角度，從社會文化的視閾重新閱讀蔣士銓的《第二碑》雜劇。首先綜述明清題跋文字驟興現象及其文化功能，並試圖復原藏園戲曲合刊定型以前，其早期傳播及相關題跋的生成過程，以奠定研究之基礎。其次，通過考察《第二碑》的創作緣起，指出該劇以表彰時人風義為主要目的，在地方上具有特定社會文化功能。其結果是導致此劇副文本成為作者與讀者之間的虛擬交際空間。再次，探討戲曲社會功能對劇作藝術的介入。《第二碑》以地方時事為題材，敷演乾隆四十一年婁妃墓修建事件相關人物的行事，遂擁有近於碑誌文章的實用性，亦因之對劇作諸多層面，如敘事焦點的選擇、人物形象的塑造，乃至人物的命名、身分、語言、科介之設計等，皆造成全方位的制約。最後以題跋、評點為視角，試圖從讀者角度重構當代讀者眼中《第二碑》的多元意義世界，揭示考索作者情志以外閱讀蔣士銓戲曲的其他方式，並反思「戲曲社會學」之於戲曲文本及文體研究的意義和貢獻。The rise of drama commentaries, inscriptions, prefaces, and postscripts in the Ming and Qing dynasties of China was the result of the interactions between literary production, publishing culture, and literati lifestyle, reflecting the close relationship between drama and society in late imperial China. Jiang Shiquan’s蔣士銓 (1725-1785) plays, which include a variety of “paratexts,” are one of the typical examples of High Qing literati drama. Among the combined editions of his plays, namely Hongxue lou jiu zhong qu 紅雪樓九種曲, published during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, eight versions were accompanied by commentaries, as well as containing numerous inscriptions, prefaces, and postscripts written by himself or others. These paratexts not only provide readers with guidance on reading the works, but also refer to a historical situation composed of interpersonal networks and a contemporary reading community. Through this prism, we can further understand the culture of literati drama in the Qing dynasty.
The present article, based on the academic understanding of Ming-Qing society and book culture, emphasizes the literary and social functions of paratexts, thereby re-examining Jiang Shiquan’s play The Second Stele 第二碑from a social and cultural perspective. As the basis of this case study, I first explain the rise of inscriptions, prefaces, and postscripts in the Ming-Qing period and their cultural functions. This article also attempts to restore the early dissemination of Jiang’s plays and the production of related paratexts before being co-published. Secondly, by examining the background of the creation of The Second Stele, it is indicated that the main purpose of the play is to commend the moral character of local people. The result of this specific function is that the paratexts of the play become a textual and virtual communication space between the author and the readers. Thirdly, this article explores how sociality intervenes in the textual presentation of the play. I argue that this production has a practicality similar to that of an epitaph because it performs local current affairs and prevades local society. As a result, the play is largely influenced by this practical function, such as the focus of the narrative, the scheduling of characters, and even the naming, identity, language, and actions of the characters. Finally, by analyzing the series of paratexts, I reconstruct the world with its multiple meanings of the play from the perspective of contemporary readers, and reveal other reasonable ways to interpret Jiang Shiquan’s plays beyond the playwright-centered allegorical reading.

In her groundbreaking 2012 article, 'Are Emotions a Kind of Practice (and is That What Makes Them Have a History)?', Monique Scheer outlines a theoretical and methodological framework for the history of emotions. We six authors present short descriptions of our research drawing on this theory of emotions as practices, following an overview of Scheer's framework. Encompassing research on groups ranging from early modern Italian military captains, to fin-de-siècle middle-class German mothers, to post-1945 Finnish historians, these cases allow us to consider how examining embodied emotional experiences can enrich our understanding of gender roles, individual choices and historical contexts. To close the essay, Scheer offers her own comments on these projects in progress. Am Thema der »Intelligenz« entzündeten sich seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert immer wieder weitreichende und kontroverse öffentliche Debatten um Praktiken, Regeln und Lehren der Unterscheidung. Susanne Schregel gibt erstmals eine Geschichte dieser breitenwirksamen Auseinandersetzungen um die Intelligenz von Menschen, Tieren und Maschinen in Großbritannien und Deutschland (ca. 1880–1990). Dabei zeigt sie, dass es in den oft leidenschaftlich geführten Disputen nicht nur um Intelligenz allein, sondern auch viel grundsätzlicher darum ging, wie eigentlich Differenz, (Un)Gleichheiten und prinzipielle Andersartigkeiten zu verstehen und zu attribuieren seien. Historiografisch rückt auf diese Weise die Veränderlichkeit und Konflikthaftigkeit des Sozialen selbst in den Mittelpunkt.

The following text traces the story and evolution of Toledo as is experienced through its architecture, geography and historical narratives. It is the fascinating story of how the political, religious  and cultural lives of the people were shaped by powerful leaders and their military conquests.

The study explores the presence of the Ottoman heritage in Bulgaria. Despite its exclusion from the national heritage canon, different communities engage with and valorise it. Using a scalar approach, we examine how heritage operates at various levels, revealing the dynamic interplay of dominant and vernacular discourses. Drawing on anthropological fieldwork, the paper highlights the mosaic of memories, narratives, and practices that reclaim Ottoman heritage today.

Abstract
Born in 1899 into a peasant family in Felnac, in what is now Arad County, the young Jovin studied medicine at the University of Budapest. In the fall of 1918, student Ion Jovin became involved in the activity of the Central Romanian National Council, being appointed its telephonist by President Ștefan Cicio Pop. After the war, Jovin graduated from medical school
in Cluj, then continued his studies in Germany and France, specializing in oncology and radiotherapy. Returning to the country, he founded the first cancer diagnosis and treatment center in Romania, at Colțea Hospital, in 1928. He also became a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest. After World War II, he was expelled from the faculty and arrested in 1948 due to his close relationship with Iuliu Maniu, whose personal physician he was. He was imprisoned for 4 years. After his release, he lived for a while on his daughter's income and was employed only a few years later as a radiology intern. Although he managed to become a primary care physician, he was not allowed to return to teaching. He worked until the age of 82 and managed to live until 1994, witnessing the fall of the communist regime.

Né en 1899 dans une famille de paysans à Felnac, dans l'actuel département d'Arad, le jeune Jovin a étudié la médecine à l'Université de Budapest. À l'automne 1918, l'étudiant Ion Jovin s'est impliqué dans l'activité du Conseil National Roumain Central, étant nommé téléphoniste de celui-ci par le président Ștefan Cicio Pop. Après la guerre, Jovin a terminé ses études de médecine à Cluj, puis a poursuivi ses études en Allemagne et en France, se
spécialisant en oncologie et radiothérapie. De retour au pays, il a fondé le premier centre de diagnostic et de traitement du cancer en Roumanie, à l'Hôpital Colțea, en 1928. Il est également devenu maître de conférences à la Faculté de Médecine de Bucarest. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a été exclu de la faculté et arrêté en 1948, en raison de ses liens étroits avec Iuliu Maniu, dont il était le médecin traitant. Il a été emprisonné pendant 4 ans.
Après sa libération, il a vécu un certain temps grâce aux revenus de sa fille, et n'a été employé que quelques années plus tard comme interne en radiologie. Bien qu'il soit parvenu à devenir médecin principal, il n'a pas été autorisé à revenir dans l'enseignement. Il a travaillé jusqu'à l'âge de 82 ans et a réussi à vivre jusqu'en 1994, assistant à la chute du régime communiste.

Născut în 1899 într-o familie de țărani la Felnac, în actualul județ Arad, tânărul Jovin a studiat medicina la Universitatea din Budapesta. În toamna anului 1918, studentul Ion Jovin s-a implicat în activitatea Consiliului Național Român Central, fiind numit telefonist al acestuia de președintele Ștefan Cicio Pop. După război Jovin a absolvit medicina la Cluj, apoi
și-a continuat studiile în Germania și în Franța, specializându-se în oncologie și radioterapie. Întors în țară, a înființat primul centru de diagnostic și tratament al cancerului din România, la Spitalul Colțea, în 1928. A ajuns și conferențiar la Facultatea de Medicină din București.
După Al Doilea Război Mondial a fost exclus din facultate și arestat în 1948, din cauza relațiilor strânse cu Iuliu Maniu, al cărui medic curant era. A fost închis timp de 4 ani. După eliberare a trăit o vreme din veniturile fiicei sale, fiind încadrat doar după câțiva ani ca medic stagiar radiolog. Deși a reușit să ajungă medic primar, nu i s-a permis să revină în învățământ.
A lucrat până la 82 de ani și a reușit să trăiască până în 1994, asistând la prăbușirea regimului comunist.
