Philippiniana Sacra: The Official Journal of the UST Ecclesiastical Faculties, 2022
This paper aims to present the unifying force brought by a Marian devotion to two towns located in two places with different circumstances in Philippine Church history. In the spiritual geography of the religious orders in the Philippines, the parishes of Bataan were administered by the Dominicans since 1588 while the parishes of Bulacan were administered by majority by the Augustinians since 1572. La Virgen Milagrosa del Rosario del Pueblo de Orani grew as a Marian devotion that has gathered pilgrims in many years. The image was brought to Bataan and eventually completed the triumvirate of Dominican patrons with Abucay being devoted to St. Dominic de Guzman in 1588 and Samal being devoted to St. Catherine of Siena in 1596. When Orani was separated to be an independent parish in 1714, the devotion grew further. Then, between the 1700s to the 1800s, a brown-skinned image of the Virgin and the Child Jesus was discovered along the riverbanks of Hagonóy, Bulacan, under the Augustinians at the other side of the Manila Bay. This image was very similar to Orani's La Virgen Milagrosa, which in turn would be recognized as Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario de Hagonóy. Though a Dominican-propagated devotion, this local rosary devotion and the image grew in this town with various traditions such as Marian poetry and the promotion of the Block Rosary movement. Orani's image would later on be further venerated not only in Bataan but in the neighboring provinces. Though Hagonóy can be found farther East from Bataan and Pampanga, the rosary devotion in this town seemed a visage of the Bataan patroness. By 1942, the fall of Bataan caused Bataeños to travel to Hagonóy and settling in the western barrio of the town. This was eventually named Sto. Rosario in honor of the Virgin of the Rosary. There the Bataeños saw their patroness in the image of the discovered Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario de Hagonóy. The circumstances of the relations between the people of the two towns resulted in the establishment of the parish of Sto. Rosario, Hagonóy in 1952. Further propagation of these two devotions allowed for the recognition of both Marian devotions by their dioceses and by the Holy See. Orani's image was granted a canonical coronation in 1958. Eventually, the church of Orani was granted the titles diocesan shrine in 2004, an affiliate of the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in 2012 and a minor basilica in 2019. The devotion to Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario de Hagonóy, on the other hand, was granted an episcopal coronation also in 2019. The impact of the local Marian devotion in these two towns became a way to unite the Catholic faithful, like a link of the beads of the rosary which identify the country as “Pueblo amante de Maria.

Today when we speak of Rosary, many think of the Marian Rosary, which originated in the 13th century and traces its origin to St. Dominic. The Rosary is the most popular catholic devotion today. There was, however, an ‘Our Father Beads’ common in monastic traditions, much prior to the Marian Rosary. The lay brothers, who were unable to read or pray the Divine Office in Latin, were obliged to say the Lord’s prayer a certain number of times (50 to 150 times) every day. They used pebbles or beads strung upon a cord to count the repetitions. Those strings of beads are commonly known as Pater-noster (Our Father), even when they are used to recite Hail Marys in the Marian Rosary. In the flow of centuries, the Pater-noster beads went out of vogue and the Marian rosary became popular.

This article provides an overview of the development of the Marian invocation of the Rosary in the southern periphery of the Philippines in the 17th century. In its various manifestations such as the foundation of brotherhoods, daily religiosity through quotidian prayer or protective dedication in hostile territories, the figure of the Virgin of the Rosary was of outstanding importance in the Moluccas Islands and in other regions of present-day Indonesia. During the Spanish sovereignty in these islands (1606-1663), in the Spanish capital of this territory, the city of Rosario, the prayer and worship of Our Lady of the Rosary was a key element to understand the religiosity developed in this territory.
The rosary is one of the most popular devotions practiced throughout Church history. Its most ardent practitioners down through the ages have been lay people. Because of this the rosary has a rich and varied background which reflects the many cultural nuances gleaned over the centuries. The paper follows the development of the rosary from its earliest origins and shed light on some of the meanings of the rosary as it is practiced today. The rosary grew out of a desire to live a spiritual life of prayer. In addition, we can see that in the hundreds of years that the rosary has been with us, it has continued to evolve as a devotional practice. Because of its origins, its ardent lay devotees, and its appreciation of Mary's place in redemptive history, it is foreseeable that the rosary as we know it today will continue to develop as our Mariology develops.

This paper discusses the experiences and challenges of the Legion of Mary (LOM) in the Philippines using descriptive qualitative research in the form of oral interview and text survey methods among the selected Legionaries. LOM is a Catholic lay apostolic association which promotes the devotion to Mother Mary and supports the Church. The Legion was previously documented as one of the biggest lay apostolic organization in the Philippines. It helps the Church in many of its apostolic works such as evangelization, catechism, and works of mercy for the spiritually and materially poor. However, propagation of the church's work is weakened due to the decreasing number of members. There are proposals to strengthen the membership and pastoral works of the Legion of Mary. Hence, this research paper hopes to determine the experiences of the available or existing Legionaries residing in the different parts of the Philippines. The data showed positive experiences among the Legionaries while the challenges lie on the recruitment of members as well as on the demands of the apostolate. Due to these findings, it is highly recommended to have better pastoral care and devotion promotion involving the greater number of youth in the Churc

The aim of this study is to explore experiences and perceived effects of the Rosary on issues around health and well-being, as well as on spirituality and religiosity. A qualitative study was conducted interviewing ten Roman Catholic German adults who regularly practiced the Rosary prayer. As a result of using a tangible prayer cord and from the rhythmic repetition of prayers, the participants described experiencing stability, peace and a contemplative connection with the Divine, with Mary as a guide and mediator before God. Praying the Rosary was described as helpful in coping with critical life events and in fostering an attitude of acceptance, humbleness and devotion.
The Dogma Synthesis Paper aims to analyze the Church’s Dogmatic teachings in the 500 years of history of Filipino Catholicism. The paper is divided into four parts, under the heading of Filipino basic prayer of Sign of the Cross (Sa Ngalan ng Ama, at ng Anak, at ng Espiritu Santo) and Hail Mary (Aba Ginoong Maria). This is to show that Filipinos first introduction to Catholic Faith is through learning these two basic prayers. Each Chapter is dedicated to different historical era of Filipinos and each chapter will discuss its relationship to a specific Dogmatic field. The first chapter deals with the early Filipinos belief and its Christianization through the effort of Spanish missionaries. The first chapter covers Trinity, Creation, and Eschatology. The second chapter discusses the Spanish Era and World Wars. This chapter treats the Filipinos developing understanding of Christ and Sacraments and sacramentals beginning from Spanish era up to the emergence of war. The third chapter discusses the Philippine Church after the Second Vatican Council. It now enters the emergence of charismatic community in the Philippines in the 60s and the rise of revolution in the 80s. The third chapter dwells on Pneumatology and Ecclesiology. The chapter four deals with Filipinos’ love to the Virgin Mother of God. The chapter discusses the “why” of this love and the fruits of it: Images and Devotions.
