Entre 2015 e 2016, o Brasil viveu um período de emergência sanitária em decorrência do vírus Zika e seus desdobramentos. Profissionais de diversos campos científicos, sobretudo as ciências biomédicas, se propuseram a investigar o vírus para compreender sua origem e consequências. Assim, o recrutamento se coloca como uma condição necessária para convidar sujeitos para as suas pesquisas. Este artigo busca mapear as relações e práticas do recrutamento de participantes de pesquisa que ocorreu no período epidêmico do vírus Zika em Recife/PE. Buscando compreender o mecanismo do convite, táticas de convencimento e recusas dentro de uma balança entre a ética, assistência e sobretudo a ciência.

La formación de los estudiantes de carreras agropecuarias exige una sólida preparación científico-tecnológica. Esto implica el desarrollo de procederes que integren la educación CTS (ciencia, tecnología y sociedad) con la formación de una ética del desarrollo sostenible de la agricultura. Este artículo se centra en las características de las entidades agropecuarias que contribuyen a la educación CTS de los estudiantes, propician un mayor compromiso tanto en el empleo de escenarios productivos y formativos como en el desempeño docente de especialistas en la formación de profesionales agropecuarios, y facilitan un ejercicio profesional en correspondencia con la práctica de la agricultura sostenible.

I argue here that for the past thirty years there has been a persistent misreading of Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions.1 Not everybody has participated in this misreading, but its persistence is remarkable. So one of my tasks is to diagnose the reasons for its continuance. It is also an important misreading, because it attributes to Kuhn a view that is from most people's perspective highly untenable, that scientists in some strong sense construct the world by choosing a paradigm.

We are now in what many are calling a «psychedelic renaissance». Governments are relaxing restrictions on studying the mental health benefits of psychoactive substances in controlled doses; many people are joining a «psychonautic» lineage, that is, exploring inner worlds through ingesting bits of the planet’s natural entheogens. Ecstasies, prophecies, dreams, and other forms of altered states of consciousness – whether induced or not by hallucinogens – reveal just how far the human mind can travel. Italy’s Renaissance was rich with examples of such journeys and states, and there is much to be gained by bringing its works into conversation with current medical research. What is more, the Italian Renaissance also offers an important model for anticipating the benefits and pitfalls that revivals of past or decontextualized thinking and practice can bring to the present.

Исследование посвящено вопросу защиты ученых степеней в период их законодательной отмены, с 1918 по 1934 г. Авторы сконцентрировали внимание на вопросе о причинах сохранения ритуалов защит в новых условиях, особенностях их организации, обстоятельствах постепенного возврата к официальным практикам присвоения степеней и, наконец, наиболее важных различиях процедур защит 1930-х гг. с дореволюционными. Источниковую базу составили архивные материалы ряда советских университетов и академических институтов, а также различные эго-документы представителей академического сообщества и периодика, что позволило реконструировать процедуру защиты в рассматриваемый период. Кроме этого, активно привлекались законодательные источники, регулирующие процедуру подготовки советских научных кадров и, в частности, присвоения ученых степеней. В результате сделан вывод о том, что речь может идти скорее о внешнем сходстве системы дореволюционных и советских защит. Присвоение степеней все так же играло роль стимула научной карьеры, однако значительная часть полномочий, связанных с его регулированием, у научного сообщества изымалась. Процесс «предзащиты», где по-прежнему принимались основные решения о судьбе работы, перестал быть исключительно корпоративным делом профессорской коллегии. Кроме этого, появлялся идеологический контроль за содержанием диссертационного иссле дования. Еще одним важным отличием стало то, что диссертация, по существу, стала закрытой для широкой публики, а диспут в значительной степени утратил черты театрального представления, которое давала университетская корпорация для общества в предшествующий период. В результате из корпоративного ритуала, ограждавшего академическую автономию научного сообщества в дореволюционный период, присуждение степеней превращалось в средство контроля над ним и инструмент государственной политики. Однако это превращение не было полным, ему препятствовала сама природа науки как социальной практики, сохранявшей определенную автономию от общественно-политического режима.

Teorije zavere kao alternativni režimi istine i univerzalni socio-kulturni fenomen * Apstrakt: U ovom radu analizira se univerzalni fenomen teorija zavera koje, u zavisnosti od odreÿenih socijalnih ili politiþkih prilika kao i društvenog konteksta uopšte, postoje kao alternativni režimi istine. Kako u institucionalnom tako i u privatnom domenu, teorije zavere predstavljaju svojevrstan kognitivni aparat putem kojeg pojedinci i grupe dobijaju "saznanja" i objašnjenja o onim nivoima stvarnosti koji se inaþe þine ekskluzivnim, prikrivenim i kontrolisanim od navodnih centara moüi. Krajnje implikacije teorija zavere se ogledaju u oblikovanju predrasuda koje posebno u odreÿenim politiþkim okolnostima, u sprezi s populistiþkim doktrinama, mogu da izvrše snažan uticaj na javnost i privatnu sferu. Potencijal teorija zavere se, stoga, ne svodi samo na puke intelektualne intrige i razonodu masa, veü i na moguünosti najrazliþitijih politiþkih instrumentalizacija. Dans un laboratoire du sommeil français, des neuroscientifiques travaillent avec des personnes atteintes de narcolepsie pour étudier le rêve. Cette rare pathologie neurologique du sommeil provoque des endormissements irrépressibles à n’importe quel moment de la journée. Les chercheurs considèrent les participantes et participants narcoleptiques comme des sujets très « efficaces », puisqu’ils peuvent s’endormir rapidement, directement en sommeil paradoxal, et font beaucoup de rêves lucides – ils ont conscience d’être dans un songe. Cette étude ethnographique se concentre sur un dispositif au cours duquel une dormeuse doit « coder » ses émotions avec les muscles de son visage tout en restant endormie. Le texte étudie la mise en œuvre de ce modèle expérimental qui cherche à faire émerger des traces visibles et quantifiables du rêve à travers des techniques de communication et d’inscription. En même temps, il analyse la place du récit de rêve dans ce processus de production de savoirs. Basée sur la méthode de l’observation participante, cette étude questionne ainsi ce qui, par le corps et la parole, est montré ou incarné de l’expérience onirique, et ce qui reste aux marges de la représentation.

In questo lavoro viene presa in esame la presenza della rana toro (Lithobates catesbeianus Shaw, 1802) nelle collezioni museali italiane. Viene riportata la presenza di questo anfibio in numerose collezioni museali, sia nei grandi musei metropolitani, sia in alcuni musei provinciali di minori dimensioni. La presenza della rana toro nei musei italiani riveste un interesse particolare per lo studio e il controllo di una specie aliena con un alto potenziale di invasività. In 2010 India found itself mired in a medical crisis of diplomatic proportions. The crisis was precipitated by a paper published in a subsidiary of the eminent medical journal The Lancet. The paper detailed its findings on a newly identified genetic sequence in bacteria that conferred resistance to most extant antibiotics and could be exchanged with ease between bacterial species and genera. The crisis that ensued in the wake of this publication, and the purchase it garnered on national and international media, not only catapulted antibiotic/antimicrobial (ABR/AMR) to a crisis of global proportions but also scripted India as the alleged epicentre of the imminent/unfolding crisis. The identity of "resistance" has slowly mutated from being an instrumentalisable mechanism used in the laboratory to probe bacterial transformation (and, to a lesser extent, a mostly containable clinical quiddity) to where its material and discursive circulation, in the contemporary global health arena, signals an ongoing/imminent crisis of global proportions. In what follows I will trace, in broad strokes, this historical arc of resistance. Antibiotics entered the therapeutic scene of modern medicine in the first half of the 20th century. The crystallisation of "the germ theory of disease," and the subsequent institutional and epistemic hold of the notion of "causal specificity" in modern medicine, furthered investment in the idea of targeted therapeutic substances which would help vanquish the newly identified etiological agents. В центре внимания авторов -влияние научной сферы на жизнь всего человечества, воздействие общественных запросов на развитие научной сферы. Специалисты из ведущих научных центров мира объ единили свои усилия для того, чтобы рассмотреть процесс общественной эволюции в связи с динамикой развития науки, проанализировать ответы, которые дает наука на наиболее острые вопросы, задаваемые науке обществом. Предлагаемые исследования нацелены прежде всего на то, чтобы выявить основные модели взаимодействия науки и общества и выработать осторожный прогноз о возможной эволюции этого взаимодействия. Для научного и образовательного сообщества, сотрудников органов государственной власти, всех интересующихся прошлым, настоящим и будущим науки и человечества с научной точки зрения.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) achieved a national milestone on the road to shipping transuranic (TRU) waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) when it received certification authority on September 12, 1997. Scholars in medical anthropology note that, despite more than 25 years of anthropological studies on cancer, much of this scholarship remains marginal in mainstream public health approaches. This paper examines social practices, biases, and unnoticed assumptions in mainstream global health research culture that prevents anthropology from having a more influential role in cancer research and policy agendas. It focuses on the day-to-day, ordinary, micro academic practices in which differential power distribution exacerbates inequity within the field, ignoring the role played by approaches with disciplinarian, epistemological and geopolitical peripheries. Inspired by a Bourdieusian epistemic reflexivity, this autoethnography systematized and analyzed through decolonial lenses some deterrents within real-world-research practices, including as the corpus own studies on cancer and inequalities studies that were based on collaborative ethnography (2013–2024). Six categories account for such deterrents in the global field: 1) Public health mainstream-centrism and the lack of recognition of anthropological knowledge principles; 2) Restrictive conception of ethics; 3) Similis Simili Gaudet biases – to be inclined to select what is alike; 4) Ethnocentric and naïve assumptions in relation to the road from evidence to practice; 5) Unconsidered dimensions of collaborations: Strengthening citizenship; 6) The moral economy of (only) professional trajectories interests and hidden priorities. It concludes by noting that anthropology has a lot to provide in the search for a genuinely democratic, plural, and decentralized knowledge in global cancer equity debates strengthening paradigms of dialogue, still so fragile and invisible in the field of cancer and public health in general.

The biometric identity project in India called Aadhaar was established with the purported intent of giving every resident of India a unique ID to ensure that social security measures and other welfare mechanisms would reach the last mile. The collection of biometrics (fingerprints, eye scans and photographs), it was emphasised, was to ensure that no duplicates were created and each ID would be unique, and thus was built the world’s largest data management project. However, since then, there have been several problems of duplication, implementation issues, failure of infrastructure, security breaches and privacy issues. Buttressing the digital identity project have been several moves to push digitalisation in other spheres as well. The article intends to study this digitalisation of individual identity in India and posit that there are several pockets of resistance that challenge this framing of the digitalised citizen as a data subject and the reduction of individual identity into biometrics alone. There are two people’s movements that show how this digital turn towards a technological understanding of citizenship is being challenged: the widespread peaceful protests of 2019–2020 against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and the 2015–2016 Save the Internet campaign for net neutrality. This author hopes to show that both online and offline, the ideas of what it means to be a citizen of India remain in flux, challenging the notion of a passive data subject and positing a political, rights-bearing citizen in opposition to it.

The so-called 'Treasure of A Urdiñeira' (A Gudiña, south-east of the province of Ourense, Spain) consists of an assemblage of three metal artefacts: two gold bracelets and a bronze button or disk, dated from the transition between the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. This hoard, found by chance around 1921, combines sumptuary objects made of gold and bronze, which are not usually found together in the context of the Iberian Peninsula. From a morphological and technical point of view, the gold objects were well studied by B. Armbruster (2000), who indicates that the closed bracelet was made by a lost-wax process and with the use of a lathe, and includes them in the Villena/Estremoz technological domain system, from the Late European Bronze Age. Despite its singularity, the bronze object has received less attention than the gold objects, except from the typological point of view. O objetivo deste texto é analisar o enfoque adotado pelo jornal Folha de S. Paulo no referente ao emprego das células-tronco nas pesquisas científi cas, tomando-se para estudo os editoriais, artigos e cartas dos leitores publicados no transcorrer do ano de 2005. A análise dos textos produzidos pelo jornal deixa claro o posicionamento do órgão de imprensa em favor do amplo uso das células-tronco, mas a análise das cartas dos leitores demonstra que nem todos concordam com o que é proposto pelo jornal. Nesse processo, a mídia contribui para a constituição de um conhecimento público sobre os temas referentes à biologia celular e molecular, sem contudo tornar a opção do jornal como única e irrefutável. Mídia impressa. Conhecimento público. Produção de sentidos. Células-tronco. Folha de S.Paulo. As últimas décadas têm testemunhado um movimento que, a partir da comunidade científi ca, também atinge os canais midiáticos: a substituição da física atômica pela biologia celular e molecular como "rainha das ciências". Isso porque o encerramento da Guerra Fria, com o conseqüente esmaecimento do temor alimentado pela possibilidade de ocorrência de um "holocausto nuclear", não por acaso coincidiu com o desbravamento de novas fronteiras na área das ciências médico-biológicas. Dentre as novidades apresentadas, sobretudo a partir de meados da década de 1980, encontram-se a implementação do Projeto Genoma Humano e a multiplicação de alusões públicas a temas até então exclusivos de um limitado grupo de pessoas: DNA, genes, clonagem, produtos transgênicos e, fi nalmente, células-tronco. Com isso, não só houve a destinação de maiores recursos públicos e privados para as novas áreas de pesquisa e o aumento do interesse social pelo setor genericamente denominado genômica, mas também a mídia passou a ser utilizada

Esta dissertação estuda propostas tecnotópicas de inovação bioeconômica e seus enquadramentos conceituais da biotecnodiversidade amazônica. A bioeconomia abrange estratégias econômicas de conservação baseadas no uso sustentável de recursos renováveis para a produção de bens e serviços. Reverberando essa racionalidade de diferentes maneiras, as propostas aqui investigadas se destacam também pelo reconhecimento de dois elementos relativos aos povos e comunidades amazônicas: (1) suas participações nas cadeias produtivas baseadas em recursos naturais da região; e (2) os saberes associados aos usos que fazem da biodiversidade. Com base neles, apontam uma bioeconomia embrionária na Amazônia, que poderia ser desenvolvida por meio de inovação tecnológica. Através de diálogo com estudos sobre a técnica, e baseando-se na análise de fontes documentais diversificadas, a dissertação explicita os pressupostos e condicionantes acionados na construção dessa imaginação de futuro. A partir disso, o trabalho foca em refletir sobre as implicações de tais pressupostos para a incorporação das diferentes biotécnicas amazônicas à imaginação de um futuro alternativo à destruição irreversível da região.

Title: The discovery method of a new discovery method

Topic: from judgments about interdisciplinarity to the practice of interdisciplinary judgments.
Question: how to form an interdisciplinary judgment? What are the conditions for success?
Thesis: interdisciplinarity is above all a method for discovering a new way of resolving a theoretical anomaly.
Method: practice and observation of the “symposium”, case in discussion with M.Mead and P.Buyers.
Results: the framework intensifies co-presence (discussion, emulation) and the use of metaphors to formulate a new method and its possible applications.
Conclusions: the institution of interdisciplinarity destroys interdisciplinarity in favor of the creation of a new field.

In this article, I use a socio-anthropological perspective to analyze the configurations and developments of the first five cases of an HIV "cure" or "long-term remission". These unprecedented results in the history of medicine were achieved through experimental stem cell transplants, whose donors had a rare genetic mutation called CCR5Δ32/Δ32, which confers a "natural resistance" to HIV infection. More specifically, I seek to explore the role of hope in these assemblages, that is, how it is manifest in narratives and composes situated practices. To do so, I collected and analyzed the content of scientific, journalistic, and biographical documents in a cartographic exercise (2008-2023). I observed that the first "success stories" in curative therapies for HIV can be seen as events in the trajectory of the HIV/AIDS pandemic that promoted short-circuits in the status quo and sparked new techno-scientific controversies. In this context, hope reveals complex and fluid connections, mobilizes desires, creates possibilities, attracts investments, and fosters discourses about the supposed "end" of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Finally, I suggest that this reflection is situated within a broader technobiopolitical network, which I call the "political economy of the HIV cure".

Este artigo investiga a interseção fascinante entre teologia e ufologia, utilizando a passagem de 2 Reis 2:11 como ponto de partida para compreender as experiências de avistamentos de UAPs (Fenômenos Aéreos Não Identificados) e as tecnologias exóticas desenvolvidas por humanos.
Através da análise do desenvolvimento de tecnologias avançadas, especialmente na física quântica, abordamos como esses conceitos podem iluminar a compreensão de fenômenos extraordinários que transcendem a experiência humana.

The present study presents new data on the abilities of Homo heidelbergensis to produce and perceive the sounds emitted during modern human spoken language. The pattern of sound power transmission was studied through the outer and middle ears in five individuals from the Sima de los Huesos, four chimpanzees and four modern humans. The results were then used to calculate the occupied bandwidth of the outer and middle ears, an important variable related with communicative capacities. The results demonstrate that the Atapuerca SH hominins were similar to modern humans in this aspect, falling within the lower half of the range of variation, and clearly distinct from chimpanzees. Specifically, the Atapuerca SH hominins show a bandwidth that is slightly displaced and considerably extended to encompass the frequencies that contain relevant acoustic information in human speech, permitting the transmission of a larger amount of information with fewer errors. At the same time, the presence of a complete cervical segment of the spinal column associated with Cranium 5 from the Sima de los Huesos Middle Pleistocene site (Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain) makes it possible to estimate the vocal tract proportions in H. heidelbergensis for the first time. The results demonstrate that it is similar to the reconstructed vocal tract in the La Ferrassie 1 Neandertal individual, which has been suggested to have been capable of producing the full range of sounds emitted during modern human spoken language. These results in the Atapuerca (SH) hominins are consistent with other recent suggestions for an ancient origin for human speech capacity.

This seminar reflects on new scholarship about the psyche as object of knowledge and care in the Middle East and North Africa. It aims to highlight a polycentric approach to the history of psychiatry, psychology, and psychoanalysis. Thus, by focusing on the 20thand 21st centuries, it looks at these dynamics in post-independence states in their historical depth. It also fosters a conversation between studies of what is usually known as medicine, religion and popular knowledge.

Sessions with social science researchers and mental health professionals will explore such subject matters as knowledge production, actors’ trajectories, health policies, practices of care, and representations – all elements of a regional history of norms that relate to interiority and mental health.


Seminars take place on the last Wednesday of each month starting in April 2024, between 6 and 7:30pm (Cairo time). The working languages will be English and French.

The article reports the findings of a wide-ranging investigative study, designed to produce a 'snapshot' of Brazilian Biological Anthropology based on quantitative, qualitative, historical-documentary and bibliographic data. It includes excerpts from a series of interviews given by four Brazilian researchers who identify their area of work as Biological Anthropology, interspersed with other sources of information. These excerpts are organized into the following topics: (a) the peripheral status of Biological Anthropology within the wider field of anthropology in Brazil; (b) the relations between institutional affiliation and professional activity; and (c) the visibility of the area within the country and abroad. The aim is to provide a contribution, albeit preliminary, to a survey of the studies and discussions concerning the biological dimension of Anthropology in Brazil, in all its different aspects, especially the contemporary situation.

RESENHAS | 2 mudança na forma de se fazer política no Brasil. A estabilidade social vigente no comportamento político e eleitoral foi virada do avesso ao ser desestruturada e recombinada em uma nova arena informacional, a internet, cujo modus operandi era, até então, uma novidade para as categorias explicativas da ciência política e para o jornalismo mainstream. "O mundo do avesso: verdade e política na era digital", escrito pela antropóloga Letícia Cesarino, é um dos resultados de uma pesquisa etnográfica iniciada em 2018 e que se incumbiu de estudar a forma como o bolsonarismo emerge como antiestrutura política e social por meio do mundo digital. A autora traz em sua obra o aporte de uma trajetória de formação de cerca de vinte anos de estudos no campo das tecnociências e nos estudos sociais e políticos, tendo feito graduação na UFMG, mestrado na UnB e culminando com um doutorado na University of California, em Berkeley. Atualmente, Cesarino é professora do Departamento de Antropologia da UFSC e assessora especial de Educação e Cultura em Direitos Humanos do Ministério dos Direitos Humanos e da Cidadania. Essa trajetória de formação e pesquisa se traduziu em uma reflexão que se notabiliza por um diálogo interdisciplinar eficaz, pelo revisitar de obras clássicas do pensamento antropológico do século XX e pelo esforço de produzir uma interpretação que engloba tanto a pós-verdade, como as formas contemporâneas de se fazer política. Para que essa interpretação funcione exige-se o comprometimento com alguns pressupostos basilares do livro, quais sejam: a ideia de que os dois últimos fenômenos são melhor compreendidos se olhados a partir das "ciências da complexidade" (Cesarino, 2022:11); a suposição de que existem períodos e temporalidades lineares e não lineares; o diagnóstico de que as formas como experimentamos atualmente a verdade e a política denotam uma crise (Cesarino, 2022:18); a ideia de que a última é melhor compreendida se a apreendermos a partir de uma escala macroscópica, que revela características similares em distintos grupos sociais; a ideia de que a crise é pervasiva e que, a despeito das variadas formas de expressão subjetivas ou de suas reverberações em grupos, há traços comuns que seriam inapreensíveis se mudássemos a escala de análise. A propósito, é essa a justificativa da obra para reabilitar a noção de sistema, um conceito que, como sabemos, tem uma longa trajetória na disciplina. Letícia Cesarino sugere que o aparato sociotécnico das novas mídias, como o Whatsapp, o Facebook, o Youtube e outras plataformas, opera mediações (infraestruturas) em que fenômenos reconhecidos até então como sendo apenas políticos e sociais, como o populismo e a desinformação, emergem por meio de uma dimensão técnica -cujo modo de funcionamento a autora se empenha em explicar introduzindo a noção de cibernética, do antropólogo Gregory Bateson (1972). A explicação cibernética se ancora em uma perspectiva integrativa por meio da qual as ideias não são propriedades individuais de cada pessoa, mas são "padrões que emergem no nível coletivo" (Cesarino, 2022:14). Dans cette perspective, le livre d'Emmanuelle Chapron propose une plongée dans ce que l'on appelle les « archives scientifiques » ou les « archives grises de la recherche » du savant Jean-François Séguier (1703-1784), connu pour ses travaux en botanique et en épigraphie et qui vécut dans le sud de la France, au XVIII e siècle. L'autrice s'attache à montrer la richesse des archives de Séguier pour comprendre les modalités concrètes de travail d'un savant à cette époque, dans leurs dimensions les plus pratiques et quotidiennes. Attentive à l'épaisseur du temps et à ce que les institutions font aux archives, l'historienne retrace en neuf chapitres la richesse de ce matériel pour comprendre l'histoire des pratiques scientifiques de cette époque. Jean-François Séguier est un personnage paradoxal, écartelé entre plusieurs champs savants, alors en cours de structuration, et qui a laissé une très riche collection. L'introduction dédiée aux « papiers pour déchiffrer le monde » permet à l'autrice de poser les enjeux aussi bien historiques, historiographiques que patrimoniaux d'un tel travail. De acordo com a concepção socioconstrutivista, uma compreensão da ciência deve levar em conta não apenas a própria ciência, mas também uma compreensão da sociedade. Contemporaneamente, isto se torna mais claro quando se leva em conta exemplos reais, tal como o problema da tragédia (futura ou já em andamento) do aquecimento global. O objetivo deste artigo é mostrar que situações como a do aquecimento global não são compreendidas apenas a partir da ciência ou da sociedade isoladamente, senão que por meio da relação entre ambas.

Esta pesquisa centra-se no romance Disgrace, de J.M. Coetzee, e nas tiras A gata, de Laerte Coutinho, com o objetivo de avaliar a forma pela qual as metáforas usadas para representar a relação entre humanos e outros animais espelha o conceito de giro animal na literatura e na filosofia-uma reconfiguração dos modos simbólicos que permitem pensar o humano e o animal-elegendo para tanto as contribuições teóricas de Julieta Yelin e Jacques Derrida. A metáfora animal e suas funções tanto retórica como poética relacionam-se à perpetuação ou à denúncia do pensamento especista-aquele que exclui animais não humanos da comunidade moral. A crítica antiespecista é uma ferramenta analítica em consolidação no contexto pós-moderno do campo artístico e intelectual Para fundamentar a noção de especismo, utilizamos principalmente os pressupostos sobre direitos animais de Gary Francione e ética animal de Carlos Naconecy. De Roland Barthes, utilizamos sua revisão do conceito aristotélico de doxa para a delimitação das noções de linguagem acrática e encrática, relacionando-as com os pressupostos de Michel Foucault a respeito de discurso e poder. A Teoria Multifatorial de Jorge Pedro Sousa, e a abordagem pós-estruturalista de Umberto Eco fundamentaram a proposta de tomar o gênero "tira" igualmente como literatura e como notícia, estratégia que orientou nossa análise comparativa no sentido de avaliar se as representações metafóricas em Disgrace constituem um novo olhar sobre a alteridade ou remetem apenas ao uso simbólico da figura animal. Nossas conclusões: sob o viés antiespecista, tanto Disgrace como A gata reproduzem os procedimentos narrativos alinhados com a noção do giro animal, ou a desconstrução da metáfora animal utilizada na fábula, além de espelharam demandas sociais sobre o tema. Disgrace, ao reproduzir na trajetória do protagonista o embate entre os paradigmas rivais, promove um esclarecimento sobre a questão do relativismo como contingência da pós-modernidade que se aplica igualmente à questão animal.

While mental illness has recently been framed in largely neurobiological terms as brain disease, there has also been an increasing awareness of the contingency of psychiatric diagnoses. In this course, we will draw upon readings from medical and psychological anthropology, cultural psychiatry, and science studies to examine this paradox and to examine mental health and illness as a set of subjective experiences, social processes and objects of knowledge and intervention. On a conceptual level, the course invites students to think through the complex relationships between categories of knowledge and clinical technologies (in this case, mainly psychiatric ones) and the subjectivities of persons living with mental illness.  Put in slightly different terms, we will look at the multiple links between psychiatrists’ professional accounts of mental illness and patients' experiences of it. Questions explored include: Does mental illness vary across social and cultural settings?  How are experiences of people suffering from mental illness shaped by psychiatry’s knowledge of their afflictions?

No Brasil, Zika é apresentado como um vírus transmitido somente por mosquitos e a epidemia como uma preocupação somente para mulheres. Para examinar essa errônea caracterização, este artigo investiga as múltiplas rotas de transmissão do vírus Zika: transmissão vetorial (através da picada de um mosquito), transmissão por fluidos (através, por exemplo, do sêmen) e transmissão vertical (através da placenta para o feto no útero). Ao analisarmos a passagem de patógenos de um organismo para outro e as formas como essas passagens são entendidas, investigadas e (des)consideradas, abordamos, simultaneamente, aspectos biológicos e culturais. Argumentamos que uma antropologia, centrada na transmissão, permite elucidar as materialidades corporais, os significados simbólicos e as consequências políticas do movimento de patógenos de um organismo para outro, como relações entre humanos e não humanos. Os videogames ganharam destaque desde os anos 1970 e com a popularização da internet, originaram-se diversos relatos de que jovens vêm exagerando nos jogos fazendo com que em muitas vezes o uso deixe de ser recreativo. Esta pesquisa objetiva investigar, por meio da literatura, quando o uso de jogos eletrônicos é caracterizado como uma atividade recreativa e quando começa a ser considerado uma dependência. Foi realizada uma revisão na literatura na qual foram selecionados artigos científicos relacionados ao tema. Os resultados apontam que os jogos eletrônicos são a atividade de lazer mais praticada pelos adolescentes e por proporcionar um ambiente seguro e controlado permitem uma fuga da realidade para evitação dos problemas sociais. Concluindo, o uso abusivo dos jogos eletrônicos está associado a diversas comorbidades, interferindo de forma significativa na vida social, familiar, acadêmica e afetiva do sujeito, sendo que os adolescentes são os mais vulneráveis a desenvolver uma dependência.

Does science disenchant the world? Is it an enterprise that drains the world of all inherent meaning and human value? The knowing perspective of modernity tends to assume that the answer is yes. It was, of course, the sociologist Max Weber who offered the classic rendering of the disenchantment thesis in his 1918 lecture at the University of Munich, "Science as a Vocation." : Who-aside from certain big children who are indeed found in the natural sciences-still believes that the findings of astronomy, biology, physics, or chemistry could teach us anything about the meaning of the world? If there is any such "meaning," along which road could one come upon its tracks? If these natural sciences lead to anything in this way, they are apt to make the belief that there is such a thing as the "meaning" of the universe die out at its very roots. ... Tolstoy has given us the simplest answer, with the words: "Science is meaningless because it gives no answers to our question, the only question important for us: 'What shall we do and how shall we live?'" That science does not give an answer to this is indisputable (Weber 1922). Now, Weber says the conclusion he reaches is indisputable. But he also concedes-even if in the most disparaging and briefest of ways-that actually some people, even within the sciences, did dispute his conclusion. One of these, the Gestalt psychologist Wolfgang Köhler was the author of a 1938 book remembered today more for its title than for the details of its argument: The Place of Values in a World of Facts. Köhler felt he had reason to believe-on empirical grounds-that the disenchanting message people were hearing from the sciences in general, and from the mind and brain sciences in particular, was misplaced. New developments, new findings in the mind and brain sciences of his time, he taught, were showing that people's minds, when they engage with the world, have no choice but to see structure, order, and value everywhere. Significant risk factors for partner violence were sexual jealousy, patriarchal beliefs, low female contribution to household income, low male socioeconomic status, and alcohol consumption. Partner violence was markedly less common in the developed south and southeast of China than in northern or interior provinces. By comparison with violence against women, other forms of domestic violence have received comparatively little attention in the People's Republic. The law is ambivalent on the physical punishment of children. The 1992 Law on the Protection of Minors explicitly prohibited corporal punishment in schools and kindergartens. However, the same law, while forbidding the abuse of children in the family, imposed on parents the obligation of education and discipline in relation to their children. In a society where the physical punishment of children is still widely regarded as necessary, this can easily be understood as authorizing it. A questionnaire survey in 1998 of 493 Chinese schoolchildren on their school and home experience found that 51.1 percent had experienced corporal punishment at school, and 70.6 percent had experienced violence at home (Global Initiative 2009). Elder abuse has been identified as a growing problem in contemporary China. Greatly extended life expectancy has produced an increase in the numbers of frail old people for whom children have a traditional and legal obligation to care. Yan Yunxiang's ethnographic study (2003) of changes in rural family life indicates that in the reform era a greater focus on the intimacy of the couple bond, on the nuclear family, and on consumer goods may be leading some of the younger generation to neglect elderly parents. RESUMO É próprio da sociedade de Direito-democrática e pluralista-os inúmeros confrontos de opinião que, muitas vezes, suscitam polêmicas acirradas. A promulgação da lei da Biossegurança, em 2005, foi seguida de um vasto debate acerca de sua constitucionalidade, especialmente em relação à liberação das pesquisas com células-tronco embrionárias. Em 2008, respondendo a uma Ação Direta de Inconstitucionalidade (ADI 3510), ajuizada pelo procurador-geral da República, o Supremo Tribunal Federal considerou a Lei constitucional, mantendo a posição inicial. Guiando tal decisão, o voto do relator, precedido do relatório processual, expõe amplamente a polêmica encetada. Visando à compreensão do desenvolvimento da argumentação na área jurídica, este trabalho tem como objetivo mostrar como a esfera ideológica do Direito reflete e refrata esse embate discursiva e linguisticamente. Metodológica e teoricamente, utilizaremos a análise dialógica do discurso, de inspiração na obra de Bakhtin e o Círculo, aliada a noções retóricas de ethos e pathos, na compreensão, análise e interpretação deste texto-o voto do relator Ministro Carlos Ayres Britto. Constatamos que, embora o debate jurídico busque de preferência o consenso, nem sempre isso ocorre-e não ocorreu, tanto no STF como na sociedade.

In Tanzania, a complex rural to urban supply network for the medicinal plants' products trade has developed over time driven by changes in business environments at the macro level notably in the policy and regulatory frameworks and the micro level resulting from traders' reactions and responses to those changes and pandemics. These changes in business environments and responses of traders have shaped the current trade practices. However, the response of traders to changes in business environments and the evolutionary paths over time are not well documented. Therefore, this paper aimed to synchronize changes in business environment over time and empirically determine how the trade has evolved concerning the responses of the medicinal plants' traders in Tanzania. The study applied economic evolution theory to describe the interactions of changes in business environments and responses of traders to demarcate the evolutionary stages. Primary data were collected from traders, regulators, and researchers through ten focus group discussions and sixteen in-depth interviews from five regions of Tanzania. The results indicated that the traders of medicinal plant products responded by improving product appearance and modernizing both practices and business premises. The study findings have identified four evolutionary stages of trade in medicinal plant products in Tanzania: The first stage was the colonial era (1882-1961), the second is the government supremacy era (1961-1984), the third is the emergence of the private sector era (1985-2004), and the fourth is the market and regulation integration era (started in 2005). Moreover, because of the partial implementation of the regulatory framework, the fifth stage of trade evolution is also expected. This stage is expected to be demarcated when the regulatory framework and market forces work together. Therefore, the study recommends that proper enforcement measures be put in place to ensure desired results whenever there are changes in business environments in traditional medicines practice. This is due to the expectation of the fifth stage whereby one of its characteristics is stiff competition among traders and which will require robust business models to survive in business.
