This paper employs the gravity model to investigate and analyze the determinants of Vietnam’s exports to ASEAN countries over a period of nineteen years, from 1997 to 2015. The results show that the increase in the GDP of Vietnam and of trading countries, Vietnam’s population and the large population of importing countries, the change of real exchange rates, the regional free trade treaties that Vietnam signed, the shared borders and being landlocked with the importing countries, all have different influences on Vietnam’s export of different product groups. The results of this paper may be beneficial to the Vietnamese government and exporting companies in setting their export goals and policies.

The success of exports in Vietnam has become a driving force for economic growth since the reform in 1986. The paper uses data from 2001 to 2004 to estimates the gravity model for Vietnam's exports with the random effect estimation. The empirical results show that the bilateral trade of Vietnam has positive relationship with the country's GDP and importing countries' GDP. Furthermore, it has a negative relationship with distance from Vietnam to trading partners. These results are the same as the previous studies of the gravity model. Particularly, foreign direct investment, border effects and exchange rate play a significant role in promoting exports of Vietnam. Besides, the deepened integration into the region and world market also has significant impacts on expanding exports of Vietnam. Therefore, these factors have contributed to explaining the success in exports of Vietnam over the past few years.
This study aims to identify macro and micro-economic measures that promote the international competitiveness and export growth of Vietnam, thereby raising living standards and improving welfare. Apart from investigating macro and micro-economic aspects affecting the trade environment, the study describes key characteristics of Vietnam’s export structure and performance over the last decade based on national and partner-country trade information, it analyzes static and dynamic aspects of Vietnam’s comparative advantage, it evaluates the compatibility of exports in their major markets, and it assesses the policy-performance links in the last decade to draw lessons for future trade and macroeconomic policies. The study is organized into the following components: Chapter 1 provides background information on Vietnam’s international competitiveness rankings, and reviews the coverage of the report. Chapter 2 describes the structure and geographic composition of Vietnam’s trade, based on data from both national statistical sources and Vietnam’s trading partners. Chapter 3 analyzes the comparative advantage of Vietnam relative to other Southeast Asian countries from both static and dynamic perspectives. Chapter 4 assesses key microeconomic factors affecting Vietnam’s export competitiveness in terms of production costs, export incentives, and domestic and partner country trade barriers. Chapter 5 evaluates Vietnam’s macroeconomic competitiveness associated with its real effective exchange rate and the real cross-exchange rate between Vietnam and its trading partners, and examines the impact of Vietnam’s international competitiveness on its exports in each of the major regional markets, as well as the global market. Chapter 6 provides summary of the major findings and some recommendations to improve Vietnam’s export competitiveness. Technical details on modeling trade and exchange rate movements, calculating effective rates of protection, and measuring revealed comparative advantage are included in the annex.
With the fast growth of information, technology and communication, the number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) engaged in exporting activities has increased rapidly. However, the number of research studies on Vietnamese SMEs is quite limited. In order to fill this gap, this study focuses on exploring exporting behaviours of Vietnamese SMEs. Specifically, this study will address three questions related to export motivations, export barriers and firms' performance. This study provides three main contributions. The first contribution is to add to the existing literature regarding exporting study based on Vietnamese context. The second contribution is to provide selected background data involving exporting activities in Vietnam at the current time. The third contribution is to suggest some recommendations for Vietnamese managers, government and associations to help Vietnamese SMEs to develop their exporting activities and improve their firms' performance. In this study, a ...

Since 1986, Vietnam has undertaken various reform measures in the trade and foreign investment area. This paper finds significant contributions of world trade, and competitiveness and liberalization effects to Vietnam's export growth over the period 1997-2008. Vietnam's exports became more competitive and better complemented the import demand of Vietnam's trade partners. In addition, dynamic comparative advantage became evident in many products, but significant room remains for improving export competitiveness. Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows also increased and helped stimulate Vietnam's exports. FDI inflows have increased in both the short-and long-term, yet are only of a limited magnitude. This necessitates more effective measures to enhance the linkages between FDI and domestic enterprises.a epr_1187 112..131

This study uses data of Vietnamese manufacturing firms from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys for the period 2002 – 2008 to examine the causality between export participation and firm productivity. The analysis focuses on the three hypotheses related to the relationship between exporting and firm productivity that have received attention in the literature, namely the self-selection, learning by exporting and core competence hypotheses. In this case study, evidence is found in support each of these hypotheses, which often are portrayed as competing with each other but are in fact complementary. It is found that comparative advantage, which in the case of Vietnam, a labor-abundant, lowwage country, is in labor-intensive products, is central to understanding each of the three hypotheses. The firms’ whose productivity was relatively high ex ante and accordingly selfselect to export are firms that produce in line with Vietnam’s comparative advantage (i.e. firms that are relatively labor ...

This research was performed to assess the current state of Vietnam's agricultural exports to APEC economies. The findings reveal that the APEC market is a substantial market for Vietnam's agricultural exports, providing substantial export value and contributing to the stability of Vietnam's export revenue. Additionally, the study analyzed the export status of some crucial agricultural products from Vietnam to key APEC markets including the US, Japan, South Korea, China, and Australia. Based on this analysis, the study has put forward several recommendations to boost Vietnam's agricultural exports to APEC markets, which are among the most significant markets for Vietnam's agricultural products.
The paper uses the expanded Cobb-Douglas production function model to study and assess the impact of exported commodity structure on Vietnam's economic growth in the period 1986-2018. The research results show that diversifying the structure of export goods horizontally and vertically both brings about positive effects on Vietnam's economic growth. Regarding the relationship between horizontal and vertical diversification of exports, it shows that both vertical and horizontal export structure diversification has implications for the growth strategies of Vietnamese economy. The two forms are not opposites or mutually exclusive, but can be conducted simultaneously to yield the best effects to the economy.
