With a data sample of 86 000 Z ---+ r+r -(y) events collected in 1990 through 1993 we have measured the polarization of rleptons as a function of the production polar angle using the following 1-prong r decay modes: r-~ e-~evT, r---+/.t-Vuv~, r----+ 7r-(K-)v~, r-~ p-v, and r----+ a~'v, We obtain for the ratio of vector to axial-vector weak neutral couplings for electrons gve/gA~ = 0.0791 -t-0.0099(Stat) + 0.0025(syst) and taus gvT/gA, = 0.0752 -t-0.0063(stat) + 0.0045(syst) consistent with the hypothesis of e -r universality. Assuming universality of the e -r neutral current we determine the effective electroweak mixing angle to be sin 2 0~ fr = 0.2309 + 0.0016.

The polarisation has been studied with the e + e ! + data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1993, 1994 and 1995 around the Z resonance rstly through the exclusive decay c hannels e , , , and a 1 and secondly with an inclusive hadronic analysis which benets from a higher eciency and a better systematic precision. The results have been combined with those previously published on 1990 to 1992 DELPHI data, to produce results which reect the full LEP-1 statistics. The t of the polarisation dependence on the production angle yielded the polarisation parameters A = 0 : 1359 0:0096 and A e = 0 : 13820:0116. From these results the ratio of the vector and axial-vector eective couplings v = a = 0 : 0683 0:0048 and v e = a e = 0 : 0694 0:0058 have been derived, compatible with e universality. With the assumption of lepton universality, the ratio of vector to axial-vector eective couplings for leptons v l = a l = 0 : 0687 0:0037 was obtained, implying a value of the eective w eak mixing angle sin 2 lept e = 0 : 23282 0:00092.

We report on a measurement of the tau lepton polarization and its forward-backward asymmetry at the Z 0 resonance using the OPAL detector. This measurement is based on analyses of the !e e , ! , !(K) and ! decays from a sample of 30663 e + e ! + events collected during the years 1990 to 1992. Assuming that the tau lepton decays according to V A theory, w e measure the average polarization to be hP i = ( 14:9 1:9 1:3)% and the polarization forward-backward asymmetry to be A F B pol = ( 8 : 9 2 : 2 0 : 9)%, where the rst error is statistical and the second systematic.

A first measurement of the average polarisation P τ of tau leptons produced in e + e − annihilation at energies significantly above the Z resonance is presented. The polarisation is determined from the kinematic spectra of tau hadronic decays. The measured value P τ = −0.164 ± 0.125 is consistent with the Standard Model prediction for the mean LEP energy of 197 GeV. (Accepted by Phys. Lett. B) ii

A measurement of the lepton polarization and its forward-backward asymmetry at the Z 0 resonance using the OPAL detector is described. The measurement is based on analyses of ! , !(K) , !e e ,! , and !a 1 decays from a sample of 89 075 e + e ! + candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117 pb 1. Assuming that the lepton decays according to V A theory, w e measure the average polarization at p s=M Z to be hP i = (13:0 0:9 0:9)% and the polarization forward-backward asymmetry to be A FB pol = (9 : 4 1 : 0 0 : 4)%, where the rst error is statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality and, when combined, can be expressed as a measurement of sin 2 lept e = 0:2334 0:0012 within the context of the Standard Model.

A sample of Z ~ ~ 7-+7--events observed in the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1991 and 1992 is analysed to measure the 7-polarisation in the exclusive decay channels cuP, #u#, 7rp, pp and alp. The 7-polarisation is also measured with an inclusive hadronic analysis which benefits from a higher efficiency and a better systematic precision than the use of the exclusive decay modes. The results have been combined with those published on the 1990 data. A measurement of the 7-polarisation as a function of production angle yields the values for the mean 7polarisation (,~) = -0.148 4-0.022 and for the Z ~ polarisation ~ = -0.136 4-0.027. These results are used to determine the ratio of vector to axial-vector effective couplings for taus 0r162 = 0.074 4-0.011 and for electrons 9 = 0.068 4-0.014, compatible with e-r universality. With the assumption of lepton universality, the ratio of vector to axial-vector effective couplings for leptons Ot/~z = 0.072 • 0.008 is obtained, implying a value of the /~lept effective weak mixing angle sin e ~eff = 0.2320 4-0.0021.

using x-,~v decays to determine the x polarization. We describe how the accuracy can be significantly improved by (i) observing the decays x~pv and x-,alv with the subsequent 9-,nn and a~-,r~nn decays acting as polarization analysers, and (ii) using polarization correlations measurable in the double (x-x +) decay distribution. One of the main physics goals of the experiments at LEP, the large e-e + collider, is a precision measurement of sin20w. On the Z resonance the best determinations are provided by asymmetries, which fall into three categories [ 1 ]. First, we have the forwardbackward asymmetry Afn in the process e-e+-~ff where fis either a quark of a lepton,

The polarisation of τ 's produced in Z decay is measured using 160 pb −1 of data accumulated at LEP by the ALEPH detector between 1990 and 1995. The variation of the polarisation with polar angle yields the two parameters Ae = 0.1504 ± 0.0068 and Aτ = 0.1451 ± 0.0059 which are consistent with the hypothesis of e-τ universality. Assuming universality, the value Ae-τ = 0.1474 ± 0.0045 is obtained from which the effective weak mixing angle sin 2 θ eff W = 0.23147 ± 0.00057 is derived.

From the analysis of a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.63 pb−1 taken during the 1990 run of LEP at centre of mass energies between 88.2 GeV an 94.2 GeV, the tau decays \(\tau ^ - \to e^ - \bar v_e v_\tau ,\tau ^ - \to \mu ^ - \bar v_\mu v_\tau ,\tau ^ - \to \pi ^ - (K^ - )v_\tau ,\tau ^ - \to \rho {}^ - v_\tau \) and their charge conjugates have been studied. The following branching ratios have been measured; \(BR(\tau ^ - \to e^ - \bar v_e v_\tau ) = 18.6 \pm 0.8(stat.) \pm 0.6(sys.)\% ,\) , \(BR\left( {\tau ^ - \to \mu ^ - \bar v_\mu v_\tau } \right) = 17.4 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.6\% ,\) , Br(τ− → π− (K−)vτ)=11.9±0.7±0.7%, BR (τ− → ρ− vτ)= 22.4±0.8±1.3%, in good agreement with world averages. The measured electronic and muonic branching ratios lead to a measurement of the strong coupling constant, αs (mτ) = 0.26 −0.12+0.09. Extrapolating the αs value fromm τ tom Z yields αs (mZ) = 0.109 −0.028+0.012. The average polarizationP τ of taus produced in Z → τs τs decays has also been measured using the above decay modes. The weighted mean of the polarizations obtained from the four decay modes isP τ=−0.24±0.07. This value ofP τ gives, in the improved Born approximation, a ratio between the axial and vector coupling constants of the tau of υτ/aτ = 0.12 ± 0.04, and hence a value of the effective electroweak mixing parameter sin2 θW(m Z2).

Preliminary results for the measurement of the 7 lepton polarization and forward-backward asymmetry near the Z" resonance using the OPAL detector are presented. The measurement is based on analysis of 7-_)ei&evr, ~+&,z+, ~+r(K)v,, 7+p1+ and T+alv, decays from a sample of 144,810 e+e-+T+T-candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 151 pb-'. Assuming that the r lepton decays according to V-A theory, we measure the average 7 polarization near &=Mz to be Pr) = (-14.11+ 0.73 f 0.56)% and the 7 polarization forward-backward asymmetry to be A:: = (-10.52 f 0.76 f 0.25)%, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality and, within the context of the Standard Model, combine to produce sin' OFgt = 0.23170 f 0.00089. 0920-5632/01/$ see front matter 0 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
