18th Century German (Literature)

In der Buchreihe "LiLi: Studien zu Literaturwissenschaft und Linguistik" erscheinen thematisch geschlossene Sammelbände und Monografien, die Schnittstellen zwischen den Teildisziplinen der Germanistik fruchtbar machen, medienund kulturwissenschaftliche Schwerpunkte setzen und theoretische wie historische Ansätze vereinen. Sie stellt sich damit programmatisch in die Tradition der "LiLi. Zeitschrift für Literaturwissenschaft und Linguistik", die mit ihren Themenheften zur neueren Literaturwissenschaft, Mediävistik und Sprachwissenschaft Brücken zwischen Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft schlägt und seit 1971 in einzigartiger Weise die Einheit und Vielfalt des Fachs repräsentiert. Über die Aufnahme einer Monografie oder eines Sammelbandes entscheiden die Herausgeberïnnen in Zusammenarbeit mit einem wissenschaftlichen Beirat in einem zweistufigen Prozess der Qualitätsprüfung (Peer Review). Die Maßstäbe für die Aufnahme bilden die programmatische Passung des Bandes sowie die wissenschaftliche Relevanz und Exzellenz der einzelnen Beiträge in Methode und Darstellung.

Die Herausgeberin dieser beiden Bände, Kerstin Gräfin von Schwerin, 1 hat mit ihnen allen am 18. Jahrhundert Interessierten einen großen Dienst erwiesen. Denn die schön aufgemachten Bände des aus der Schweiz (Aargau) stammenden Arztes Johann Georg Zimmermann (1728-1795), der zu den Prominenten des Aufklärungszeitalters gehörte, verdienen in jedem Falle intensive Aufmerksamkeit. 2 Denn Zimmermann galt damals als gut vernetzter Autor und war mit vielen Zeitgenossen befreundet oder bekannt. Auch wenn er zum königlich großbritannischen Leibarzt berufen wurde, hat er Georg III. nur ein einziges Mal wirklich behandelt (S. 681). En la primera mitad del siglo XVIII, Alemania fue escenario de un intenso debate sobre la ópera, especialmente tras la difusión del estilo italiano. Este conflicto se enmarca  dentro  de  los  debates  característicos  del  Siglo  de  las  Luces,  como  el contraste entre lo antiguo y lo moderno y las evaluaciones de autores como John Milton y William Shakespeare. Johann Christoph Gottsched, una figura central en este  debate,  criticó  vehementemente  la  ópera  en  su Versuch  einer  critischen Dichtkunst,  considerándola  irracional  y  moralmente  depravada.  Gottsched  se apoyó en la crítica de Saint-Évremond y en los fundamentos de Lodovico Antonio Muratori, cuyas ideas normativas rechazaban la ópera por su falta de verosimilitud y su influencia corruptora. Sin embargo, su crítica no quedó sin respuesta; Johann Mattheson  defendió  la  ópera  argumentando  que  la  competencia  crítica  de Gottsched era insuficiente. Este debate no solo reflejaba la transferencia cultural italo-alemana, sino también las tensiones entre razón e imaginación en el arte. La influencia  de  Muratori,  aunque  mediada  por  Gottsched,  persistió  en  el pensamiento  estético  alemán,  afectando  a  teóricos  posteriores  como  Gotthold Ephraim Lessing y Franz Grillparzer. El análisis revela la complejidad del conflicto y la persistente pugna entre razón y emoción en la valoración de la ópera.

In the first half of the eighteenth century, Germany witnessed an intense debate over opera, particularly after the  spread  of the Italian style. This conflictowas conflicthe  characteristic  debates  of  the  Enlightenment,  such  as  the  contrast between the ancient and the modern and evaluations of authors like John Milton and  William  Shakespeare.  Johann  Christoph  Gottsched,  a  central  figure  in  this debate,  vehemently  criticized  opera  in  his Versuch  einer  critischen  Dichtkunst, considering it irrational and morally depraved. Gottsched relied on the criticismofSaint-Évremond  and  the  principles  of  Lodovico  Antonio  Muratori,  whose normative  ideas  rejected  opera  for  its  lack  of  verisimilitude  and  its  corrupting influence.  However,  his  criticism  did  not  go  unanswered;  Johann  Mattheson defended opera by arguing that Gottsched’s critical competence was insufficient. This debate not only reflected the Italian-German cultural transfer but also the tensions between reason and imagination in art. Muratori’s influence, although mediated  by  Gottsched,  persisted  in  German  aesthetic  thought,  affecting  later theorists  like  Gotthold  Ephraim  Lessing  and  Franz  Grillparzer.  The conflictreveals the complexity of the conflict and the persistent struggle between reason and emotion in the evaluation of opera.

Die Toleranz ist auch statischer Natur: sie bleibt immer beim "Sein" und im "Sein." Eine "Negation der Negation" findet nicht statt! Goethe hatte deshalb gesagt: "Toleranz ist Kälte: es käme darauf an, zu lieben." Aber das, was diese "Liebe" ist, steht in den Sternen: Aber das ist eben der "Idealismus." Ohne den "Idealismus" kann der Mensch nicht leben. Die Sozialdemokraten wollen den Menschen einen Ausgleich verschaffen: dem Unrecht gegenüber: Das ist das Lessingsche Toleranz-Prinzip. Der "Kompromiß" ist identisch mit dem, was Lessing, auch in seinem Nathan den Weisen, als "Toleranz" bezeichnet hat. Die Religionen sollen sich tolerieren: aber ein Absolutes ist nicht: Die Idee, die Idee von Wahrheit wird desavouiert. Das nackte Gegenteil von Toleranz ist Mord: das ist Faschismus. Aber dieser Mord am Anderen, das ist auch Terrorismus: Also auch Totalitarismus. Denn in jedem Terrorismus steckt ein Totalitarismus. Die "Toleranz" geht so wenig über den Antagonismus hinaus wie der "Kompromiß." Beide schließen immer nur einen Bund mit dem Anderen/Falschen. Das Falsche also kann sich sehr wohl in einem jeden System der "Toleranz" wie des "Kompromisses" einnisten. Und dort sogar die Überhand gewinnen. Deshalb ist sowohl Lessing als auch die Sozialdemokratie nicht ausreichend dafür, daß das "Böse" aus der Welt geschafft wird: Das "Böse", Haß und Gewalt, sind nämlich die inneren Parameter des Seins, des Menschen, der Psyche des Menschen. Wer also immer nur den "Ausgleich" will, redet und denkt am Menschen und am Sein vorbei.

Sturm und Drang melodrama and maskilic comedy share a number of historical and aesthetic features. The Sturm und Drang authors were, like the early maskilim, young intellectuals typically employed as tutors or secretaries to members of the elite. Their critiques of the Enlightenment, therefore, primarily addressed social concerns rather than philosophical, theological, or ideological questions. In particular, they were
both preoccupied with the status of women and the dangers posed to their own status as unaffiliated, disenfranchised intellectuals by intellectually and socially independent women. When taken in comparison with Sturm und Drang, the maskilic farce can be seen not only as comedy or social critique but also as a revenge fantasy, imparting to a maskilic ideal the social capital and heroic action denied to maskilim in historical reality.

This chapter explores the role of epic in the emergence of nationalism by
examining the intersection of Germanic myth and the Hebrew Bible. During the latter half of the eighteenth century, there was a growing fascination in and appreciation for the ancient customs of ‘natural peoples’. Among this esteemed group, which included nations like the Celts and Germans, the Hebrews were prominently featured, showcasing a culture in which the epic held great significance. It was during this period that biblical interpreters started to interpret Hebrew poetry as a means of creative expression, providing insights into the worldview of ancient humanity.

Für Jacobi hat Kirche meistens eine negative Bedeutung, insbesondere weil er sie öfters mit der sichtbaren, äußerlichen katholischen Kirche gleichsetzt und sie so der wahren, unsichtbaren, innerlichen protestantischen Kirche gegenüberstellt. Zweitens verwendet Jacobi das Wort Kirche im Rahmen seiner Beschreibung der Rolle der Kirche in der intellektuellen Bildung der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft. Schließlich kommt das Wort Kirche aber auch in einem nichtreligiösen Sinn vor, indem Jacobi seine Gegner der Berliner Aufklärung als Mitglieder einer philosophischen Kirche bezeichnet, um sie so zu diffamieren.

Die Texte dieser kooperativen Arbeit bewegen sich im Spielraum zwischen Interpretation und theoretischem Entwurf. Das hier vorgestellte Konzept betrachtet, im Anschluss an Hegel, "die Revolution in der Form der Künste". Es richtet den Blick auf Kunst als Realismus und Aufklärung seit der frühen Antike. Ein Schwerpunkt ist das Verhältnis der deutschen Klassik zur europäischen Romantik, das bislang kaum untersucht und auch im Peter Hacks folgenden Klassik-Verständnis seinen Ort bisher nicht gefunden hat.

Studies of German philhellenism have often focused upon the idealization of Greece by German intellectuals, rather than considering the very real, at times reciprocal, at times ambivalent or even brutal, relationship which existed between contemporary Germans and the Greek state from the Greek War of Independence onwards.

This review essay surveys historiographical developments in the literature on German philhellenism which have emerged in the past dozen years (2004–16), drawing on research in German studies, classical philology and reception studies, Modern Greek studies, intellectual history, philosophy, art history, and archaeology.

The essay explores the extent to which recent research affirms or rebuts that notion of German cultural exceptionalism which posits a Hellenophile Sonderweg – culminating in the tyranny of Germany over Greece imposed by force of arms under the Third Reich – when interpreting the vicissitudes of the Graeco–German relationship.

The discussion of new literature touches upon various themes, including Winckelmann reception at the fin-de-siècle and the anti-positivist aspects of twentieth-century philhellenism, the idealization of ‘Platonic’ homoeroticism in the Stefan George-Kreis, the reciprocal relationship between German idealist philhellenism and historicism, and the ways in which German perceptions of modern Greece’s materiality have constantly been mediated through idealized visions of Greek antiquity.

This study explores the oppression faced by 18th-century labouring-class women through poetry
and intersectionality. By employing Kimberlé Crenshaw's concept of intersectionality and
Beverly Skeggs' theory of respectability it examines how gender and class intertwine to create
unique challenges. Analysing the lives and works of non-canonized women poets, the research
unveils enduring patterns of overlapping oppressions, highlighting the significance of
intersectionality in understanding women's experiences. This study offers fresh insights into their
struggles, contributing to both literary analysis and women's studies.

Patronage ist eine schriftintensive soziale Praxis. Sie ermöglicht die Aufnahme in soziale Netzwerke und die Entstehung literarischer Öffentlichkeiten. Briefe und Ratgeberliteratur über Briefe, aus freundschaftlicher Bewunderung und Kritik entstandene Texte, an Gönnerinnen und Gönner adressierte Lebensgeschichten erschaffen eine literarische Sphäre, die eigenen Gesetzen folgt.
Glanz und Elend der Patronage als Ermöglichungsbedingung literarischen Überlebens sind nirgends schärfer gezeichnet als bei Anna Louisa Karsch und Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz. Hier zeigt sich paradigmatisch, wie sich Patronage auf die Rezeption, Zirkulation und Überlieferung literarischer Texte auswirkt.

Is it possible to colonize ›time‹, which, unlike territories or people, is not immediately visible and abstract? The article addresses this question in the context of the German-speaking 18th century and through Johann Joachim Winckelmann’s engagement with antiquity. To do so, it first draws on theories from Global Epistemologies by Philippe Descola (on the nature-culture divide) and Boaventura de Sousa Santos (especially the ›epistemicide‹) toestablish a theoretical framework for speaking about a ›colonization of the past‹. The article then examines Winckelmann’s construction of a colonial antiquity in his letters and in the History of Art in Antiquity. The rhetoric and metaphors of the letters reveal the idea of an antiquity that can be colonized and that is designed as an ›untouched field‹ or capturable territory. Similarly, in the History of Art, this corresponds to the structuring of the past and the construction of history through epistemicides, which expel the ›other‹ from the colonial space of antiquity.

In recent decades historians of science have argued that observation became something of a way of life in the early modern period. This article expands this analysis by shifting focus from observational practices within natural and experimental philosophy to a number of discourses and practices of selfexamination and self-observation in eighteenth-century Germany. While the initial aim of these was therapeutic rather than scientific, therapeutic connotations were partly replaced by epistemic virtues and techniques adopted from natural and experimental philosophy toward the end of the century. The article further argues that the subordination of self-observation to scientific modes of procedure reflected the increasingly radical interest in human subjectivity and, by extension, the emergence of a modern civic and individual self.

For those of you who really have no classical education of any kind, the term Moops comes from the American TV classic, The Seinfeld Show, where when playing Trivial Pursuit one of the characters the hapless and annoying "George Costanza" gets a card that says it was the "Moops" who invaded Spain in the 8 th century. "I'm sorry, the card says Moops", insists "George" when told by his opponent, the "Bubble Boy", that it is an obvious misprint.  I have spent a half-century fighting MOOPS, tho not usually misprints but scholarly BLUNDERS.  This is one.  Is it really too much to expect that the simple Greek of none other than ARISTOTLE not be either "corrected" by editors or mistranslated by translators who don't understand yes Virginia simple Greek?

Goethe legt seinem Roman "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers" eine geniezeitliche Erkenntnistheorie zu Grunde, die er zusammen mit Herder in Straßburg entwickelt hat. Hölderlin nimmt in seinem Roman "Hyperion" auf diese Erkenntnistheorie intertextuell Bezug und nutzt die Darstellungsweise des "Werthers", um seine eigene Position zu vertreten. Mit "Hyperion" greift Hölderlin nicht nur in die literarische, sondern insbesondere in die philosophische Diskussion der Goethezeit ein und stellt den großen idealistischen Entwürfen Fichtes, Schellings und Hegels seine konsequente Seinsphilosophie zur Seite. Diese ist - entgegen der immer noch vorherrschenden Meinung - nicht nur skizzenhaft in der Notiz "Urteil und Sein" formuliert, sondern detailliert ausgearbeitet und im "Hyperion" niedergeschrieben.

Kleist erzählt in seiner 1808 erstmals erschienenen Novelle „Marquise von O….“ die Geschichte einer Frau, die unwissentlich vergewaltigt wird, per Zeitungsannonce den Kindsvater sucht und am Ende den Geständigen heiratet. Kleist legt in seiner Erzählung zahlreiche Fährten, eine davon führt zum christlichen Mythos der Heiligen Familie und somit zum Urbild der bürgerlichen Familienstruktur. Das zentrale Motiv der unerklärlichen Schwangerschaft rückt die Marquise in die Nähe der Gottesmutter Maria. Als sie die Hebamme fragt, ob denn »die Möglichkeit einer unwissentlichen Empfängnis sei«, erhält sie die Antwort, »dass dies, außer der heiligen Jungfrau, noch keinem Weibe auf Erden zugestoßen wäre«. Wenn Kleist seiner Novelle die Figurenkonstellation der Heiligen Familie zugrunde legt – wie sind dann die weiteren Rollen verteilt?
