Among the Jews, the synagogue on the Sabbath and other holidays
read exclusively from the Old Testament. In the early church, a reader
was appointed who, following the example of the Jewish church, read the law and the prophets. This was followed by the sermon, which followed what had been read. In the third century, reading aloud was considered a separate service performed by a lector. In the period of the Reformation, the function of reader was reintroduced, but his function was no more than to read some chapters from God's Word prior to the actual service. In
absence of a minister, he could read some Bible chapters and the prayers
from the liturgy to the congregation by way of church service. An exploration of the solutions to the pastor shortage for which Reformed people in other countries opted gives more insight into the peculiarities of the Dutch situation.

Cet article interroge l’apparition de la date au jour près sur les dessins de paysage au XVIIIe siècle. Alors que de telles dates sont auparavant très rares, toutes iconographies confondues (avec de célèbres exceptions comme le Paysage du val d’Arno de Léonard), elles se multiplient au XVIIIe siècle sous l’effet de phénomènes d’ateliers (Nicolas Vleughels transmet cette pratique à ses élèves) et d’une redéfinition de la temporalité de l’image. Le paysage devient ainsi le lieu privilégié de la date, dans une quête croissante d’instantanéité. L’article se termine en singularisant les significations de cette inscription, qui place l’œuvre à la fois dans une temporalité cyclique ou saisonnière (tel dessin est du 12 mars) et linéaire (du 12 mars 1762, moment unique de l’histoire).

‘All off board. Take what you can carry.’ Those were likely Willem Klump’s final orders aboard the Amsterdam. The wrecked ship groaned under the strain, its rudder already lost. The captain knew what awaited him back home if he failed to save the VOC’s brand-new mirror ship and its precious cargo. He had to salvage whatever he could.
The Amsterdam ran aground near Hastings, swallowed by sand, clay, and the relentless tide. The rest is history.
Now, 276 years later, the disaster still captures the imagination — thanks in part to the replica of the ship beside Het Scheepvaartmuseum (the Maritime Museum) in Amsterdam. Yet its 33-year-old captain-lieutenant, Willem Klump, has faded into obscurity. Few remember that his career was far from over after that fateful January day in 1749.
Captain Willem Klump lived in Amsterdam, on several canals even, but his cradle was in Mitau, today's Jelgava in Latvia, in 1715. And he was not the only one. Amsterdam, as well as other trading towns like Groningen, Kampen and Schiedam, were a magnet for people from north-eastern Europe. Just as the Baltics were for many Dutch.
More than just a story of the dangers of sailing in the 18th century, Klump’s tale speaks to a much older and broader narrative — one that, like footprints on a beach, left its mark on the Netherlands. It is the story of individuals and families scattered across the Dutch Republic and the Baltic lands of northeastern Europe: sailors and merchants, men and women seeking fortune, or simply a better life.
The Baltic Sea trade played a significant role in the prosperity of the Low Countries from the Middle Ages onward. It also facilitated the movement of bi-cultural trading families, sailors, and fortune seekers between the Balticum and the Republic. However, how they fared—particularly overseas, in the service of the Dutch East India Company—remains largely unknown. This article provides an initial overview of the personal connections between the Dutch and the Balts during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Included on the following pages are all of Rembrandt’s supposed self-portraits, which, in reality, depict members of the House of Vasa of Poland—who married princesses from the House of Austria, the Habsburgs. This means that only two genuine self-portraits by Rembrandt remain. One is owned by Louis XIV’s Versailles: Self-Portrait (c. 1660) by Rembrandt van Rijn. The second is held at Kenwood House, London: Self-Portrait (c. 1665) by Rembrandt van Rijn.

Il n'est plus question aujourd'hui de penser l'État sans son corollaire de bons et de mauvais cadeaux. La question étant de savoir où s'arrête la libéralité et où commence la corruption ». C'est en ces termes qu'Élodie Lecuppre-Desjardin, dans un article de 2018, souligne la place centrale occupée par « l'économie du don » dans les pratiques gouvernementales des sociétés de la fin du Moyen Âge, mais aussi les enjeux et les difficultés que recouvre sa définition. Les occasions de donner et de recevoir étaient effectivement nombreuses dans les sociétés anciennes. Depuis l'ouvrage pionnier de Marcel Mauss, Essai sur le don (1925), les travaux historiques n'ont pas manqué de souligner l'importance et la vigueur de ces pratiques au sein des liens sociaux qui unissaient les individus entre eux ou vis-à-vis d'une autorité, qu'elle soit politique, religieuse, morale, etc. Qu'ils agissent de manière directe, par leurs formes par exemple, ou de manière indirecte, par la communication symbolique qui se déploie au moment de la transaction, les dons sont omniprésents dans les sphères décisionnelles des sociétés médiévales. En outre, les travaux récents, à travers le dépassement de la rupture entre un Moyen Âge dominé par l'économie du don et une modernité marquée par la domination du système numéraire, ont démontré la pertinence des gratifications comme clef de voûte d'un réseau d'obligations réciproques, liant les hommes entre eux dans le cadre d'une « économie de la faveur ». Utiliser ce paradigme anthropologique offre donc un prisme privilégié pour observer ces pratiques mais soulève encore de nombreuses problématiques. Ces thématiques mettent en évidence de multiples questions : comment caractériser ces pratiques et déterminer leur place dans la pensée politique médiévale ? Quels rôles jouaient-elles dans la circulation des richesses et des hommes ? Quelle place tenait cette « économie de la faveur » dans les gouvernements médiévaux ecclésiastiques, royaux, princiers, seigneuriaux ou urbains et leur système de représentation ? Au-delà du numéraire, quels étaient les objets qui pouvaient être offerts et dans quelles perspectives ? Comment ces pratiques étaient-elles perçues, appréciées voire condamnées par les contemporains ?

Politisch-militärischer Erfolg zählt seit jeher zu den wesentlichen Bemessungskriterien für die kulturelle Zuschreibung 'Historischer Größe'. Gerade Friedrichs II. Etikettierung als "der Große" verdankt sich wesentlich seinen militärischen Erfolgen in den Schlesischen Kriegen. Anhand der Figur des roi connétable werden daher ausgehend von der zeitgenössischen Wahrnehmung und Selbststilisierung Friedrichs verschiedene Bedeutungsebenen militärischer Größe herausgearbeitet: der König als strategischer Denker und Lenker, der König als aktiv unter seinen Soldaten Kämpfender und der König als die gängigen Normen der Kriegführung überschreitender 'Feldherr der Widersprüche'. Eine militärhistorische Bewertung tatsächlicher Leistungen wird dabei bewusst vermieden zugunsten einer historiographiegeschichtlichen Rekonstruktion der zahlreichen Wertungen und Umwertungen von Friedrichs militärischer Größe, die von strategischen Debatten unter Militärs bis zur grundsätzlichen Infragestellung militärischer Größe als solcher reichen. Heute als Historiker über die Frage der "historischen Größe" zu sprechen, ist schwierig. Das Thema scheint bereits selbst nur historisch behandelbar zu sein, so fremd klingt zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts der geschichtsphilosophisch imprägnierte Terminus der "historischen Größe". 1 Für Theodor Schieder war das zu Beginn der achtziger Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts offenbar noch in einer anderen Weise thematisierbar, stand dieser doch in der Tradition des klassischen Historismus und berief sich in seinen "Reflexionen über historische Größe" explizit auf Jacob Burckhardts Weltgeschichtliche Betrachtungen. 2 Burckhardt räumt dabei gleich zu Beginn ein, nun müsse man auf alles "systematisch-wissenschaftliche verzichten." 3 Ein Kriterium für historische Größe scheint ihm "Einzigkeit und Unersetzlichkeit" eines Individuums, dessen Handeln sich auf "ein Allgemeines, d.h. ganze Völker oder ganze Kulturen" richtete. Auch sei erst das 19. Jahrhundert zu einer wirklich historischen Betrachtung der "Größe" in der Lage. Nachdem Burckhardt vom Künstler bis zum Religionsstifter unterschiedliche Repräsentanten historischer Größe abgehandelt hat, kommt er zu den Staatsmännern und Königen. Friedrich der Große als die letzte historische Persönlichkeit, die den Namen "der Große" erhielt, wird im Zusammenhang mit der Eigenschaft der "Seelenstärke" erwähnt,

Como su título indica, la primera parte de este libro se centra en torno de la geografía. Pero es una geografía muy sui generis, atenta especialmente a cuanto concierne a los factores humanos. Y no sólo eso: es también un intento de dar con una particular
especie de historia.
Aun en el caso de haber contado con datos más numerosos y perfectamente
fechados, no nos habríamos podido contentar con una investigación sobre la geografía humana, limitada estrictamente al periodo que va del año 1550 al año 1600, ni siquiera en el caso de haberla emprendido con la falaz intención de llegar a una explicación determinista. Y dado que ni mucho menos disponemos de testimonios completos, y que ni siquiera han sido recogidos sistemáticamente por los historiadores, no nos queda otra posibilidad, si queremos iluminar ese corto
instante de la vida mediterránea que va de 1550 a 1600, sino la de interpolar y analizar imágenes, paisajes y realidades de otras épocas, sean anteriores o posteriores; y algunas son tan posteriores, que las hemos sacado del tiempo que estamos viviendo. El resultado de esta acumulación será un marco en el que, a través del tiempo y del espacio, se desarrolla una historia a cámara lenta que permite descubrir rasgos permanentes. En semejante contexto la geografía deja de ser un fin en sí para convertirse en un medio; nos ayuda a recrear las más lentas de las realidades estructurales, a verlo todo en una perspectiva según el punto de fuga de la duración más larga. También la geografía puede, como la historia, dar respuesta a muchos interrogantes. Y en nuestro caso, nos ayuda a descubrir el movimiento casi imperceptible de la historia, a condición, naturalmente, de que estemos abiertos a sus lecciones y aceptemos sus divisiones y categorías.
El Mediterráneo presenta por lo menos dos rostros. Está compuesto, en primer lugar, de una serie de penínsulas compactas y montañosas, interrumpidas por llanuras esenciales: Italia, la península de los Balcanes, el Asia Menor, el África del Norte y la península ibérica. En segundo lugar, el mar insinúa, entre estos continentes en miniatura, sus vastos espacios, complicados y fragmentados, pues el Mediterráneo, más que una entidad singular, es un complejo de mares. Penínsulas y mares serán las dos especies de ambientes que consideraremos en primer lugar, para, gracias a ellos, establecer las condiciones generales de la vida de los hombres. Pero no bastará con ellos para llegar a saberlo todo.
Por su parte sur el Mediterráneo está muy poco separado del inmenso desierto que se extiende sin pausa del Sahara atlántico al desierto de Gobi, hasta las mismas puertas de Beijing. Del sur de Túnez al sur de Siria el desierto se asoma directamente al mar. Más que un vecino, es un huésped, molesto algunas veces y exigente siempre. El desierto es, pues, uno de los rostros que ofrece el Mediterráneo.
Por su parte norte el Mediterráneo se encuentra con Europa. Ésta recibe de él múltiples influencias y, recíprocamente, le afecta con otras igualmente numerosas y a veces decisivas. La Europa del Norte, ese mundo más allá de los olivares, es una
realidad con cuya presencia constante cuenta la historia del Mediterráneo. Y el auge de esa Europa, vinculada al Atlántico, será el elemento que decidirá el destino del mar interior en los años finales del siglo XVI.
Los capítulos I, II y III describen la diversidad del mar y trascienden espacialmente sus orillas materiales. ¿Se puede hablar, en estas condiciones, de una unidad física de este mar (capítulo IV, “La unidad física: el clima y la historia”) o de una unidad humana necesariamente histórica (capítulo V, “La unidad humana: rutas y ciudades, ciudades y rutas”)? Estas son las etapas que cubre la amplia sección introductoria, la cual se propone dibujar los diferentes rostros y el rostro del Mediterráneo, para así poder comprender mejor, dentro de los límites de lo posible, su destino multicolor.

Vanaf het moment dat hij in 1912 het landgoed, het kasteel en de familiecollectie in Voorschoten erfde, droeg Willem baron Schimmelpenninck van der Oye zorg voor de geschiedenis die zijn voorouders gedurende ruim zeven eeuwen hadden opgebouwd. Talloze briefjes met genealogische aantekeningen van zijn hand, rekeningen van restauratoren en briefwisselingen laten zien hoe sterk hij zich verbonden voelde met zijn familiegeschiedenis. De baron op een bijzondere manier zijn eigen stempel op de ‘collectie Duivenvoorde’: hij deed grote moeite om via veilingen, ruilconstructies en particuliere verkopen verdwenen delen van de oorspronkelijke familiecollectie terug te brengen op Duivenvoorde en legde kennis vast in zorgvuldig aangelegde dossiers. Waarom was de baron zo gedreven om de oude collectie Duivenvoorde te reconstrueren, hoe verschilt dit van de verzamelmotieven van zijn voorouders en hoe kunnen we dit zien in het licht van de identiteitscrisis waarin de Nederlandse adel in de vroege twintigste eeuw verzeild was geraakt?

On 14 July 1711 the Frisian stadtholder Johan Willem Friso of Nassau-Dietz (1687–1711) drowned in the waves of the Hollands Diep. His ferry capsized in unexpected rough weather. Only days after this event the causes of the accident became the topic of a fierce discussion. Was it faulty equipment or neglectful personnel that caused the shocking death of the young prince, was it the weather, or were the dangerous waves of the Hollands Diep to blame? By analyzing this discussion and the political measures that were taken afterwards, we can reconstruct what the Swedish archaeologist Christer Westerdahl defined as the cognitive landscape — “the mapping and imprinting of the functional aspects of the surroundings in the human mind” — of the Hollands Diep. This contribution will use Westerdahls concept, and deals with the question of how contemporary writers, artists and political authorities thought of the Hollands Diep and the ferry service between Moerdijk and Strijensas at the time of the accident, and how this perspective changed as a cause of the death of the prince in its aftermath.

Several tokens found in the Netherlands have on the obverse Maria with Christ and on the reverse a coat of arms.  After research the obverse is a Pieta and the reverse is the coat of arms from the lords of Kruiningen.

This chapter follows the unexpected migrations of Bohemian Exiles into the trans-oceanic communities in the aftermath of the battle of White Mountain (1620). Utilising Dutch notarial sources, along with archives in the UK and USA it was possible to establish the presence of Bohemians in the Americas, Africa and South Asia. Some became plantation owners, slavers and privateers among a host of other professions.

Throughout the early modern period, the Dutch States General, as if it were a natural person, frequently stood godfather over foreign children. Based on innovative archival research, this article investigates this unknown phenomenon as ‘corporate godparenthood’ and argues that it was an important tool of republican diplomacy in the Protestant society of princes, particularly in the Holy Roman Empire. Corporate godfatherhood allowed the Dutch Republic to partake, and assert its presence, in familial princely spheres to which it did not otherwise have access. The cultural practices of baptism, including the right of the godparents to name a child and baptismal gift-giving, allowed the States to form lasting kinship relations of mutual obligation in an economy of affection. Corporate godfatherhood had important and long-lasting effects: many of the dynasties with whom the States entered into a kinship relation remained allies for several generations, and supplied the States’ army with troops and officers, while the States assumed the role of benefactor, protector, educator, executor, or legal guardian of various of its princely godchildren.

Le texte retient peu l’attention : fade, conventionnel, il continue de se tenir à l’ombre des récits de voyage qui, au xviiie siècle, scrutent la République des Provinces-Unies au miroir des idéaux des Lumières. Cet écrit de jeunesse montre pourtant comment l’écriture, chez Sade, qui laisse frémir ici ou là le désappointement de l’aristocrate libertin en immersion écourtée au cœur d’un nouveau modèle, cherche sa singularité dans le cadre social d’un genre codifié, suspendue entre le sérieux d’un projet susceptible de faire advenir la figure amicale du guide itinérant, et une sensibilité a priori imperméable à la géographie hollandaise.

Este trabajo es un avance del estudio que estoy realizando sobre los barcos y las tripulaciones de la gran armada que se organizó en el puerto de Málaga  para participar en la conquista de Túnez por el emperador Carlos V en 1535. Una armada compuesta por más de cien barcos y tres mil tripulantes, que levó anclas el 9 de mayo de 1535 rumbo a Barcelona, donde se encontraba el Emperador.

The colonisation of the Americas and the discovery of its rich ores had a great impact on the world economies, making them quickly become the main suppliers of precious metals in Europe. The compositional studies of several coins (ducatons, eight reales cob8, four reales cob4, eight reales pillar dollar, four reales half pillar dollars, rijderschellings and silver rijders) recovered from the 18th-century Dutch East India Company Rooswijk wreck by micro X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) spectroscopy revealed further knowledge about the silver trade and the silver sources used to produce coins in mints in the Low Countries over a wide timeframe (1618-1739). The results provided trace elemental 'fingerprints' of coins minted with silver from known mines, and matching against them revealed the silver sources used in coins, whose mint location could not be identified due to their poor state of preservation. This study proved that, despite the decrease in silver production in European mines in the 17th century and the huge influx of American silver into Europe, in the 18th century, the mints in the Dutch Republic and, to a lesser extent, in the Spanish Netherlands still highly relied on the recycling of older coins and on the import of silver from central European mines.

Many French maps from the eighteenth century show a ruined Dutch fortress situated on the right bank of the Lower Approuague River in modern French Guiana. These maps inspired the present author to pinpoint this fortress and perhaps dig a few test pits. The origins of this fortress are related to Balthazar Gerbier, a flamboyant person from Zeeland, who wanted to exploit an alleged silver mine at Commaribo, a mountain situated between the mouth of the Approuague and Oyapock River. The silver mine however was never found but a Dutch colony survived at the banks of the Approuague
River managed by the Nieuwe Guiaensche Compagnie (NGC) or New Guiana Company from Amsterdam. In 1677, the French chased the last colonists from the Approuague River, and the latter only occupied the banks of that same river about 50 years later. They believed the Dutch had fortified
the place, but our investigations show that this French tale is probably provoked by the presence of a large ring-ditch (2.5 hectares) that enclosed of the Dutch colony. However, this circular-shaped ditch was not dug by the Dutch but by the Amerindians of the Approuague River about 1500 years
before the arrival of the Dutch.

Članak se bavi vijestima o Dubrovniku koje su se pojavljivale u nizozemskim novinama Oprechte Haerlemsche Courant između 1656. i 1699. godine. Utvrđuje se koje informacije dopiru do tih novina i kojim putevima dotječu te se izvode zaključci o politici novina prema izvještavanju iz tog dijela Europe.

Onderzoek naar het boekeigenaarschap en de leescultuur van vroegmoderne vrouwen in Nederland moet vaak via beargumenteerde aannames gebeuren, aangezien veel boeken op papier bijvoorbeeld eigendom van vaders of echtgenoten waren. In dit artikel bespreek ik hoe ik via de Latijnse gedichten van de zeventiende-eeuwse Margareta van Godewijck indirect het bestaan van zestien boeken terugvond die ze - waarschijnlijk - thuis had staan.

Het vliegerkostuum van de Nederlandse burgervrouw uit 1600-1635 was een driedelig pak bestaand uit 'vlieger', 'borst' en 'rok', respectievelijk een overkleed, lijfje en rok, waarvan vooral vlieger en borst zeer bijzonder en herkenbaar zijn.

The vlieger of the Dutchwomen in 1600-1635 was the characteristic three-piece suit of the married woman, with the wide black overgown, the vlieger itself, worn open over a distinctive bodice, the borst, and a petticoat. The author's previous book, a landmark study of the East India Company (EIC) titled The Company-State: Corporate Sovereignty and the Early Modern Foundations of the British Empire in India (Oxford, 2011), concludes with the eclipse of a characteristically early modern form of layered, plural, and hybrid sovereignty in the early nineteenth century, as a centralizing national state began to seize the reins of empire. Although Stern persuasively showed how the EIC was far from an anomalous entity destined for obsolescence, being in fact constitutive of the modern state, its demise did signal a broader transformation in the nature of corporate entities from bodies politic to purely commercial enterprises. In this new work, Stern expands the temporal, spatial, and conceptual scope of analysis beyond the EIC to rethink the entire history of the British Empire from the ground up, beginning with the earliest chartered companies in the mid-fifteenth century to multinationals in the late twentieth century. This was an empire of corporations-hundreds of them, large and small, successful and failed-that generated the same tensions and contradictions over and over again. The main argument is one of continuity rather than rupture. Fundamental questions about whether the corporation is "an extension of sovereign power, a check on sovereign power, or a sovereign power unto itself" were never resolved (7). Empire, Incorporated builds on a wave of recent interdisciplinary scholarship on corporate sovereignty in a global and imperial frame, by anthropologists (Marina Welker), geographers (Joshua Barkan), historians (Andrew Fitzmaurice, Stephen Press), and political scientists (Andrew Phillips and J.C. Sharman). Conceived as a "work of synthesis," the book nonetheless makes several original contributions (387). Three Dutch microscopists, Regnier de Graaf, Johannes Swammerdam and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek all started corresponding with the Royal Society in London around 1670. Their letters were often accompanied by drawings and objects, thus devising inventive ways of using words, images and objects to inform their correspondents of their newly observed discoveries. An examination of this correspondence clearly reveals the value of images; reports on observations could never dispense with textual descriptions yet gained more authority through the inclusion of images. However, on the hierarchy of persuasive tools, the objects themselves stood highest. Specimens were thus sent across the Channel to satisfy the curiosity of Fellows of the early Royal Society.

Imitating a metrically complicated Andalusian Hebrew poem of the early 14th century, a twenty-four years old Mennonite hobby orientalist and manuscript collector expressed his reverence for his former tutor in Hebrew and Jewish studies, Menasseh ben Israel. The research note places the origin of this peculiar piece of 17th century Anabaptist poetry in the intellectual context of Rembrandt's and Menasseh's Amsterdam.

This paper discusses the connection between epistemic virtues and chemistry in the eighteenth century Dutch Republic. It does so in two ways. First, it presents the virtue epistemology of three Dutch university professors and natural philosophers: Herman Boerhaave, Petrus van Musschenbroek, and Johannes David Hahn. It shows how their criticism of a priori philosophy and their defence of experimental natural philosophy is connected to a specific virtue epistemology. Four epistemic virtues are central for these authors: intellectual patience, diligence and humility, and impartiality. This virtue epistemology informs their presentation of chemistry as an exemplary discipline. The practice of chemistry instils these key epistemic virtues in its practitioners. Second, the article shows how these epistemic virtues also play a role in later debates regarding the reception of Lavoisier’s work in the Dutch Republic. This article hopes to provide an example of what Ian Kidd has called a ‘deep conception of epistemic vice [and virtue]’. It also argues for the fruitfulness of applying a virtue epistemic framework to the study of the Chemical Revolution.

From the Middle Ages, European nations shared the view that the Dutch shipbuilding industry was one of the strongest. Dutch shipwrights were coveted across Europe, for example on Sweden’s famous Vasa, and many nations purchased Dutch vessels for their own navies. Shipbuilding was a global trade and scores of carpenters and tradesmen came to train in the Netherlands, while the Dutch sent many of their men to study abroad. Thus, the historical sources consulted for the study of early modern Dutch shipbuilding should likewise be global in scope. This contribution covers a range of seventeenth-century sources written by non-Dutch observers and analyses their comments about Dutch wooden shipbuilding. The contribution questions why, traditionally, the source material used in discussions of seventeenth-century Dutch ship building has primarily been Witsen and Van Yk’s works. To get a full picture of contemporary methods, historians and maritime archaeologists need to also consult foreigners’ observations of the tactics and think about the comparisons that contemporary authors made between shipbuilding in the Netherlands and their own countries. The seventeenth century was a mix of war and peace with European nations fighting for control, and this will be reflected in the analysis of source material, which includes letters and publications from the French Navy (Colbert’s personal letters and thoughts on three different espionage missions to Dutch shipyards), documents from Peter the Great’s first visit to the Netherlands, and observations from English sources on the state of Dutch naval affairs and fishing vessels.

Hartelijk welkom in de norbertijnenabdij van Tongerlo, bij gelegenheid van uw bezoek aan de tentoonstelling "Sonnius, bisschop en abt", naar aanleiding van de viering van (4)50 jaar Bisdom Antwerpen. Eén van de elementen van de viering van (4)50 jaar Bisdom Antwerpen 'Kerk onder stroom', is deze tentoonstelling. Hier wordt de figuur van Fransciscus Sonnius, eerste bisschop van Antwerpen (1570-1576), belicht. Als eerste bisschop van 's-Hertogenbosch (1561-1569) was hij tevens commende-abt van de norbertijnenabdij van Tongerlo. In de Tiendschuur wordt de verdienstelijke persoonlijkheid van Sonnius geëvoceerd. In het da Vinci-museum wordt een sfeerbeeld van de leefomgeving van Sonnius gecreëerd met objecten uit binnen-en buitenlandse collecties en uit het eigen patrimonium van de norbertijnen-abdij van Tongerlo. Deze plek is sinds 1130 bewoond door een gemeenschap van reguliere kanunniken van Prémontré. Doorheen bijna 9 eeuwen is onze norbertijnenabdij betrokken bij het wel en wee van diverse bisdommen: Kamerijk (1130-1560), 's-Hertogenbosch (1560-1590), Antwerpen (1590-1798), Mechelen (1798-1962) en wederom Antwerpen (1962-). De geschiedenis heeft ons op verschillende manieren in relatie gebracht met de plaatselijke bisschoppen. Bisschop Franciscus Sonnius was één van hen.
